I had set this aside to use sometime this month when I felt like we needed a break. I didn’t realize it would be needed so soon. Here is just a little kindness to brighten a tough day.

This was too good not to share.
The letter:
The response:
And taking it to the next level:
Wait for it…

Unicorn license! Hooray!
Poe Larity
What if she’s actually a Venture Capitalist looking to house a unicorn tech startup in her back yard?
dmsilev
Would she settle for a peacock? Very pretty, you can make nice things from the molted feathers. Several flocks of them running wild in various parts of LA County and I’m sure relocating one to her backyard could be arranged.
Fair warning: They don’t make good pets.
Suzanne
@dmsilev: Yeah, peacocks are assholes. I mean, I don’t know what unicorns are like as pets, but they also don’t strike me as exceptionally chill.
eclare
Awwww, how cute!
Alison Rose
I want a unicorn, too!!

The Dodo and Furry Tails and such often have stories about people finding stray animals, usually dogs, that are in horrid condition and bringing them to a groomer and vet and fixing them up and it always gets me. Poor pups all covered in mats and dirt and stuff and then they look happy and pretty! The latest example.
Tehanu
Love the letters, and the license is priceless!
Sister Machine Gun of Quiet Harmony
That unicorn story is the absolute best 🦄!!

Oh! I was just stopping by to post about the Rocky Mountain Chamber Singers. Shoulda known it would already be here. :)
Suzanne
@Alison Rose: I want a passenger pigeon.

What’s up with the close ups of the choir director’s hands in that news piece? Lately I’ve seen a lot of weird camera angles in interviews, especially side head shots while the subject is talking. Do they think we get too bored looking at someone’s face while they’re speaking?
I can see one person in the license department saying “we should print up a unicorn license for this kid” and the whole thing snowballing from there – what fun they must have had doing that!

TaMara
Thank you for this!
It is always good when people some might not expect to act human, really step up and prove in a good way that they are.
This week has been a bit of a ride so far. In the last 2 days I’ve had to call 911 twice. Both times for neighbors. Two points of the modern world.
1.Cell phones are a damn good invention.
2.Getting old would suck if you didn’t compare it to the alternative.
Alison Rose
@Suzanne: I want a bunny-sized elephant. But not an elephant-sized bunny. Flashbacks to Night of the Lepus.
BruceFromOhio
This is most welcome, TaMara.
May we all be worthy of unicorn licenses.

I love this post. Thank you kindly <3
Layer8Problem
That is the sweetest thing. I’ve got a grandtot with about eighteen unicorn-related items in her room, unicorn poster, unicorn lamp, second unicorn poster, a variety of stuffed unicorns in different sizes, who is totally on Madeline’s wavelength.

This is why California is a failed state.
Kristine
I love this. 🦄
Kristine
@Alison Rose: What a transformation. I’m glad the pupster has a new home.

That is a lovely, wonderful, and inspiring response by Director Mayeda. Every so often, the faceless bureaucrats step up and reveal themselves to be terrific people.
AJ of the Mustard Search and Rescue Team
I’m not crying, you’re crying!
Thanks for this TaMara. I needed it tonight.
(the midterm results are my unicorn. except the unforced NY House losses ofc)

I hope my 7 year old grand-daughter doesn’t see this. She has an unlicensed stuffed unicorn we got her for Christmas a couple of years ago
ETA At least she doesn’t want a pony, since those are actually available although unaffordable.
Bruce K in ATH-GR
Oh, God. Hate to be a downer in an Acts of Kindness thread, but when I woke up and saw this thread about unicorns, my mind went immediately to Charlie Stross’s Hugo Award-winning novella Equoid (which draws heavily from H.P. Lovecraft in many ways, and is not to be read when in a fragile mental state)…
sab
@Bruce K in ATH-GR: Yikes! HP Lovecraft’s unicorns were not suitable for little girls.
sab
@sab: My grand-daughter was actually asking for permission to have a unicorn stable in her rented yard. Arguments that there are not actual unicorns carried no weight with her. I can see a desperate mother saying to herself “let local government solve this” and giving the kid pencil, paper and an address.
ETA That was very cunning of them to send the license and the stuffed unicorn. At least they are trying.

@Bruce K in ATH-GR:
@sab:
yeah, much enjoy stross, but not for a kid young enough to want a unicorn license, even a kid in his or her 50s…
the response is great though…
Chris Johnson
@Suzanne: A lot you know! Any My Little Pony fan could set you straight. Why, you could just refer to Twilight Sparkle, er Starlight Glimmer, um… Rarity…
okay, conceded, they’re not any good at chill. Try some of the pegasi :)

@AJ of the Mustard Search and Rescue Team: Oh, thank goodness! I’m not the only one with tears of happiness welling up.
Betty
@Alison Rose: Aw, what a sweet girl.
