Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

A Senator Walker would be an insult to the state and the nation.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Consistently wrong since 2002

All your base are belong to Tunch.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

This blog will pay for itself.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Being the leader of the world means to be the leader of peace.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

We still have time to mess this up!

This fight is for everything.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Honestly, I’ve seen much worse from small children, but here are some embarrassing bloopers from the Crufts dog agility trials a few years back:

Quick update on my canine conundrum: we’ve instituted a behavioral modification program combined with meds for our battling doggos, and while it’s early days, I feel hopeful. Our DVM board-certified behaviorist offers no guarantees, but she shared some amazing success stories for situations that seem more challenging than ours.

In other news, I finally managed to establish a Mastodon account after decamping from Phony Stark’s increasingly stinky litter box over the weekend. So, if you’re on the extinct proboscidean site too and are so inclined, follow me at @[email protected] I’m also on Instagram at @BettyCrackerFL. Not sure either relocation will stick, but I’m giving it a try.

Today Judge Cannon officially dismissed Trump’s suit against the DOJ in the Mar-A-Lago documents case after the 11th circuit told her cut that shit out.

A, for once, glorious map of the Western snowpack. Drought is not over, not even a little because we need three more months of this to get a “normal” winter, but it’s better by far than the last few Decembers, so take it we will, happily.

Interesting thing: POTS may be caused by Covid.

Now, the IOM think Chronic Fatigue Syndrome should be based on exertion-induced fatigue (they use the term “post-exertion malaise” or PEM), *and* by either orthostatic intolerance, or, cognitive impairment.

(The IOM is the Institute of Medicine, part of the National Academies. Go to the CDC’s Chronic Fatigue Syndrome page to find ’em.)

You know what POTS is? Orthostatic intolerance.

The cognitive impairment might be akin to that suffered from folks with ADHD – and, remember, a lot of folks with ADHD don’t need medication to manage their symptoms. It can also be a lot worse.

Finished The Bear on Hulu last night.  I feel much the same as I do about Ted Lasso.  The Bear has two settings: 1.) loud, obnoxious, anxiety-inducing and 2.) thoughtful, moving and complex.  Like Ted Lasso*, when The Bear goes serious, it is really superb but the challenge is that you still have to make it through 10-15 minutes of just open assault on your ears/mind with every episode.  I get that it is replicating the chef/restaurant chaos and cacophony, bit still, it’s a lot and you definitely need to be in the mood for it and I can easily see why some people would simply tap out (as we did on our first try).  Also, I don’t get why one of the main characters uses the homophobic f-word slur sarcastically and nobody ever pushes back or tells him to cut that shit out.  That just seems extremely unrealistic in a major city and a very diverse kitchen in 2022.  I get that it’s all about making him the asshole who you then later start to like because like every character, it’s complicated, but I just don’t understand that choice when there are other ways the show could have done that.  All that said, it’s still a very good show with a fantastic soundtrack and great performances all around.  And the episodes are mostly 20-30 minutes so you can easily binge it over a weekend or even one day.

    * For Ted Lasso make 1.) funny/cute/quirky, which I also find so annoying that I almost have to turn it off, but I really love when it gets serious/dark.

Oh, Betty, so glad there is hope for the Badger-Pete scenario!

Just because we are talkin’ dogs…anyone had a chronically carsick dog? We are being hindered in our search for a new dog friend through adoption because we *cannot* get Watson to go on car trips. There’s a reason we call him the Vomit Volcano…

We’ve tried drugs (Proquiet), treats, other inducements…to no avail. I kept hoping he would grow out of it but I think the problem may be psychological rather than physical. Been seeing suggestions for putting something “home-scented” in the car, so may try a short trip with Proquiet plus a blanket off his dog bed. But any suggestions from the jackaltariat would be welcome!

    @Kelly: Good for you!

Once spent Thanksgiving week with friends at the family cabin in Pollack Pines, CA (up CA 50 halfway to Tahoe) were we received 2-3 feet. It was glorious, because the road shut down and we could ski and sled the thing to our heart’s content, grilled the turkey on the Weber (after digging it out) and worked on those cases of wine. Best Thanksgiving ever, and a rare one to be sure. Getting out of there to go home proved interesting.

I’ve been seeing this article going around and I think the headline is pretty misleading.  But I’m also coming to the realization that aside from really generalized ones like “Voters Pushed Back Against Trumpism” in 2018, it’s almost impossible to come up with simple narratives for elections.  There’s too many variables and factors.  Every State and District is different.  From Voter Demographics to Salient Issues to Voter Access (Suppression) to What Props Are On the State Ballot to Quality of Candidate all the way down to the weather on Election Day.  I don’t think there’s any Narrative that easily explains how things went in Michigan AND Georgia AND California AND New York AND Texas etc.  And I think it’s a bit of a fool’s errand to do so.  As I believe it was one of the PSAmerica guys put it: It’s not an election, it’s hundreds of elections with numerous different conditions.  It’s totally possible that Young Voters saved our asses in some places, but failed us entirely in others for a whole host of reasons.

Young voters’ enthusiasm for Democrats waned during midterms

I had to Google to see what you were talking about. Why is a restaurant show named ‘the Bear’?! When I see the title I think of the movie from 1988, you know, the one about a BEAR?

I saw the movie when I was stationed in Hawaii, and about to transfer to Virginia. My household goods were already gone, so I was staying in the BOQ in Pearl Harbor, right next to the submarine docks. I had a night watch for an exercise we were running, so went back to the Q during the day, but couldn’t sleep because of construction of some sort on the submarine. So I went to the mall. Saw they were showing The Bear, and I’d read good reviews so I got a ticket. As I sat down with my popcorn, it occurred to me, “Joyce, you’ve been up all night, and now you’re going to watch a movie with almost no dialog?” I assumed I’d nod off, but I was on the edge of my seat. Great movie, for those who haven’t seen it.

My experience is that it works more or less like Twitter, though there are a few significant differences to look out for:

    1. There are a bunch of different servers, so you need to refer to everyone by both username and server (@[email protected]).
    2. Related, if someone isn’t on your server, you don’t have direct access to their full profile.  Instead, you have to go to their server to check.
    3. There isn’t the same global “trending” topics the way there is on Twitter. Everything like that is done local to your server.  This can be advantageous if you get on a server that’s specific to your interests, because the trending topics are far more likely to be interesting.

Not at all.  She’s actually disclaiming any involvement, since the root of her claim is that things would have worked out differently if she had been involved.  Of course she’s admitting to being sympathetic to Rhodes, but there’s a huge legal difference between being sympathetic to a cause and taking active steps to further that cause.

@Betty Cracker:  Worked at this end.

Also, regarding videos on Mastodon:  “Video clips can be MP4, M4V, MOV or WebM files. The maximum file size is usually 40mb, but there is no limit on running time.”

As for quote tweets, I think not being able to do that’s a design feature.

Another feature that has been requested almost since the start, and which I keep rejecting is quoting messages. Coming back to my disclaimer, of course it’s impossible to prevent people from sharing screenshots or linking to public resources, but quoting messages is immediately actionable. It makes it a lot easier for people to immediately engage with the quoted content… and it usually doesn’t lead to anything good. When people use quotes to reply to other people, conversations become performative power plays. “Heed, my followers, how I dunk on this fool!” When you use the reply function, your message is broadcast only to people who happen to follow you both. It means one person’s follower count doesn’t play a massive role in the conversation. A quote, on the other hand, very often invites the followers to join in on the conversation, and whoever has got more of them ends up having the upper hand and massively stressing out the other person.

If you’re looking for people you followed on the bad place, you can use debirdify (https://debirdify.pruvisto.org/)  to help find them.

1)put in your twitter user name.

2)allow debirdify to read your twitter account (don’t remember if this is needed)

    3) Click search following

    4) at the bottom of the resulting page, click “Download CSV Export”. Save it to your local computer

    5)Go to preferences on Mastodon.

    6) click import and export, then import

    7) Make sure “merge” is selected, then choose the file you just downloaded to upload here

Make sure you put your mastodon account @[email protected] in your twitter bio to make it easier for people using debirdify to find you.

@Mike J: Nice.  I hope it works that well for everyone, and that it gets lots of visibility.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

    @Miss Bianca:

There may be a balance issue. I have a condition that affects balance and if I close my eyes I can have a problem standing. If I close my eyes sitting down the world sometimes seems to be moving. If I turn too fast while looking in a different direction, I can start to fall. I’m fine as long as I can use my eyes to help what innate balance remains. Moving in a car could be rather upsetting to a dog with balance issues. A dog’s balance system is similar to ours so maybe it’s possible.
