Mr. Pierce, with the backstory:
… Ladies? You’re on. From USA Today:
Asked by Charlie Kirk, founder of right-wing youth group Turning Point USA, about Greene’s support of McCarthy for speaker, Boebert distanced herself from the Georgia lawmaker, mentioning a conspiracy theory Greene posted online in 2018. “I’ve been aligned with Marjorie and accused of believing a lot of the things that she believes in,” Boebert said. “I don’t believe in this, just like I don’t believe in Russian space lasers – Jewish space lasers – and all of this.” Greene on Monday hit back in a tweet, accusing Boebert of engaging in “high school drama.” …
“(Boebert) gladly takes our $$$ but when she’s been asked: Lauren refuses to endorse President Trump, she refuses to support Kevin McCarthy, and she childishly threw me under the bus for a cheap sound bite,” Greene wrote on Twitter. Politico reported in April that the duo got into a heated argument over Greene’s February appearance at an event organized by white nationalist Nick Fuentes. The argument became so heated that a House Freedom Caucus board member stepped in to de-escalate, according to Politico. The tensions appear to have increased since Greene announced she would support House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s bid for speaker, breaking with several of her House Freedom Caucus colleagues.… I’m telling you this: There’s going to be hell to pay at the cafeteria one day very soon. Mac and cheese will fly and a lot of people will be sent to detention.

This whole episode is almost reminding me of politicians in Japan imploring young people to get married and have children to reverse the country’s aging demographics. In fairness, this is going to be a problem increasingly going forward over the rest of this century in much of the world, which will likely cause the global economy to grow even slower than it has over the last decade. Banning porn is not going to fix that, though. Improving people’s standards of living to make raising a family more affordable would. Gee, Hawley, why don’t we talk about low income tax rates for the wealthy, increasing income inequality, and the housing crisis as possible culprits, here?

@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): the common theme from all of these yahoos is to go out and git yourself a woman….
at no point, does anyone of the Male gender of that political persuasion ever sit back and think…. what kind of man would a woman find desirable and perhaps bother to inform said young man that….
maybe treat them as a person
find out what interests them
perhaps practice some basic hygiene
none of that would seem to imply a bridge too far kind of effort, yet for some reason none of that ever appears to pass the lips of those folks….

As all Margaret Atwood readers know, Christofascists don’t want to end pornography; they only want to control who can enjoy it and who can profit from it.
Since this is BJ After Dark, may I speak freely about Boebert vs Greene? If they go to the mattresses I’m not sure who’ll win. MTG finished college and appears less palpably stupid, so she probably has an intellectual edge.
Boebert, on the other hand, is more conventionally attractive and in my humble experience as a woman I have observed that the more fuckable woman always has an edge in popularity contests. Male sympathy and support are drawn to fuckability; that which they hope to fuck they seek to protect.
An ugly truth but a truth nonetheless, IMHO.

@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka):
Declining birth rates correspond to women attaining higher levels of education and marrying later, plus a lot of work in family planning that started 50-70 years ago, depending on where a person lives. Declining birth rates have been happening for decades, because otherwise we’d have a lot more than 8 billion people on the planet.
The global economy needs to realize that human population will start to decrease in the next 50-100 years, and the model of success being selling more units year-over-year isn’t going to work, when there’s fewer people to sell.
Population decline will probably be the one thing that helps humanity save the environment. Fewer people consume fewer resources, so less pollution, less deforestation, etc.

In a country that insists every citizen has a right to be armed at all times, I fail to see the relevance behind whether Dean knew she was armed or not. She was in her own home, with her young nephew, while strange men were skulking about her back yard. Of course she grabbed a gun. And seeing as she had that constitutional right, Dean as an agent of the govt was sworn to protect her rights, not to deny them to her.
Either way, this story is nothing but sad. This conviction is not good news, just less awful news than an acquittal would have been.
Nobody should have to carry so much.

Denise Oliver-Velez, former Black Panther and current Anthropology professor, had this to say about Hakeem Jeffries:
Ms. Oliver-Velez originally stated this last month, right after Speaker Pelosi said she was stepping back from leadership. A few people have had it in for Jeffries ever since he won the election for Democratic Caucus Chairman four years ago. He beat Barbara Lee, an excellent lawmaker who was a particular hero to self-styled Progressives. Some have tried to smear Jeffries as an “establishment shill” ever since.
So when people understood that Jeffries had the inside track as Pelosi’s successor, the was a brief but noisy campaign against him. Oliver-Velez was speaking about those sore heads.
She could just as well have been talking about Republicans, though. They will find out what a formidable politician Jeffries is, and see how capable Katherine Rice and Pete Aguilar, his lieutenants are.
Times and Republicans being what they are, we can expect the conservative propaganda machine to attack Hakeem Jeffries with lies and smears. And then Denise Oliver-Velez will once again shout the battle cry ending the statement above:

@gene108:
You’re close to it but yes this is all about the Jesus.
Hawley does not have an original thought in his head. The way it works is all this crackpottery is cooked up by the Christian Intelligista types. Adrian Vermule the Harvard Law Professor was the one who cooked up “actually what we really need is Catholic Intgeralism or all is lost in this nation”. From there Sorhab Ahmari sort of ran with it on the New York Post and The American Conservative along with team fragging David French for having the audacity to say “you know if you can ban drag queens in libraries you can ban prayer in libraries” for which the dog pile started that religious liberty is the liberty and requires state power and if state power is not being used for Jesus you are doing government wrong. You’ve also got your dime store types like Rod Dreher who sort of dances around the whole issue before going whole hog with “and that’s why we need a Franco. I didn’t want to do it. But someone was having sex in a way, at time, or with someone that doesn’t line up to the rules of Jesus so they forced me to go with a Franco and it’s really all their fault” or your Ross Douthat’s blinding bad take of “if we can redistribute wealth from the wealth, what about redistributing sex from the people having sex” which all morph into “National Conservatism” which is pretty much “Like Hitler and Franco, but with more Jesus and getting mad about sex”.
Hawley is not coming up with this. Neither is Tucker Carlson. Keep in mind it was Dreher who first made the pilgramige to Hungary and dragged Carlson out there to hype Orban. Something he did entirely because Orban said the most important thing for Europe was Christianity. That Christianity is the key to everything. Hungary must be Christian. Without Christianity there is no future, and then prayed with him. Vlad Putin pulled the same stunt. So if you want to find what’s causiing the cancer, find crosses and bibles there’s the issue that’s ruining everythinig. Don’t want to give it up then fine, but then don’t you dare complain about the shit it causes like Trump, Reagan, and all our problems. Either give it up or stop complaining about the cancers it caused.
The same pools of dark money that fund all these goof ball trips to Hungary to talk about National Conservatism, sorry, Christendom and why it has to be Christianity always, pay the bills at The American Conservative, also fund shits like Hawley. Even Peter Theil flat out has said he’s not Christian, but Christianity is the key to his brutal libertarianism because Christians want all the help and stuff to flow through the Church to force people into Christianity which means great no taxes!
Hawley knows the path to power runs through the Cross and the Bible and he’s going to ride it. Leonard Leo did not found the Federalist Society for low taxes he did it to Jesus up the nation but the low taxes were a cost to get there so he made his bid. That billion he got? Sure, the guy was rich but he was also really Christian and did it for Christianity.
Look at any problem, any issue, any evil here and scratch it a bit and out pops a cross and the most toxic book ever written. And anyone who is against tackling that issue and putting that evil ideology on the ash heap of history is enabling that might as well have voted to end Roe and is personally responable for all the shit we are in.

@hervevillechaizelounge:
Having grown up surrounded by these people, I promise you that it is not this. They sincerely and specifically want to stamp out all pornography. Are they hypocrites who consume lots of pornography? Sure. But the reasoning is ‘sex is bad’ with a side of ‘keep young people ignorant and they won’t have sex’. They 100% want to make illegal the pornography they themselves consume, with none available for anyone.

Republicans want an asshole who will wage total war against evil liberals, and be petty and spiteful about it. This has a lot of side effects, but hey, priorities.

You’re right, but the conviction rate for murderous cops used to be zero. Not rare, zero. That it’s started happening at all is a big thing, big enough that cops are throwing a shit fit that they might theoretically be accountable, maybe, possibly.

You said it, conservative Christians. Most of them don’t care passionately about it, but it’s standard dogma for heavily religious Abrahamic groups. Hawley only cares about evangelical Christians, of course.

@eversor: Really interesting comment, eversor. I’d like to gently suggest one slight amendment. I’ve been reading your posts for a while, and find that you tend to confuse proximate causes (i.e., immediate/downstream) and distal causes (contextual/background/upstream).
You often mention ‘Christianity’ as the cause for most of the repression in the world. There are many examples out there that support your claim. Christianity, however, is the proximate cause of the repression…people are using it to impose their authoritarian beliefs on others.
Ah…authoritarianism. Now that’s the distal or ultimate cause. Authoritarians use Christianity as their tool to implement their worldview. If one reads your post substituting “Authoritarianism” for “Christianity”, you’d probably have just about everybody reading this blog nodding in agreement, instead of dismissing your points as they (and I) often do.
Christianity, as a proximate cause, can be responsible for the atrocities that you illustrate. Christianity, as a proximate cause, can also be responsible for moral action, civil rights, and social responsibility (e.g., Jesus sacrificed for others…be like Jesus!). In those cases, the distal/ultimate cause is interdependence/communitarianism, which uses Christianity as the tool to implement what we would likely consider to be a positive effect on the world.
I think that if you’d take a step back and frame your commentary by focusing on more distal causes (authoritarianism) as opposed to proximate causes (Christianity, which in and of itself can produce very different outcomes under different distal causes/contexts), you might be on to something with much of your criticism!
Peace out, from a Jewnitarian Jewnaversalist (a Jewish atheist/agnostic).

Soprano2
@schrodingers_cat: I agree, I think a lot of it is fear of crime. Women have it drilled into us from an early age to be afraid, afraid, afraid of crime and criminals. Republicans use that to their advantage with white women, saying “you might not like everything we do, but we’ll keep you and your family safe from the criminals that Democrats want to release in your town”, and a lot of them buy it. I have a co-worker who told me that she wants everyone to be able to have a gun so that if something happens, there is a chance that a trained person will have a gun too and can defend everyone else. Now, when you think about this logically for even 30 seconds it completely falls apart (there was a trained police officer at the Buffalo massacre, he was murdered!, most of the time there won’t be anyone trained nearby), but she fervently believes this is a good idea, and I cannot dissuade her from it. I think that’s because she’s bought into the “crime is everywhere, you need to be protected” idea. She thinks Democrats want to take away her only defense against criminals, and Republicans want to keep her safe from crime, so she’ll vote for them. There might be other reasons too, but this is a real-life example of something I’ve heard. It’s hard to fight against this kind of ingrained fear.
