It’s hard to understand this as something other than incitement to kill or attack LGBTQ people https://t.co/MINyfvoJHu

Raichik just wants to be on the teevee...
Every time I hear or read about Raichik, I think of Steinbeck’s section on the pro-segregation “Cheerleaders” of New Orleans – especially that last paragraph. https://t.co/O1elGx070D pic.twitter.com/PRhZd7oL2x

eh, i'll cut america a little slack here, this consistently makes news on twitter and nowhere else. the bomb threats as covered in virtually all national media are always couched in language that obfuscates what's actually going on here. https://t.co/pi4XFp9lry

MMFA folks spend all day staring into the void, but most people just are not online 16 hours a day, and that's the only place you're going to catch these stories
— GOLIKEHELLMACHINE (@golikehellmachi) December 27, 2022
There's a lot of research that shows high profile coverage of these kinds of threats and attacks induces more of it, by making it famous. I don't think for a second media chuds are intentionally doing us a solid, but it's a real "be careful what you wish for" scenario.

Thank you for calling attention to this. Unfortunately, Golikehellmachine is all too correct
I’ll go further and say the FTFNYT has a track record of actively encouraging the current trans panic.

@Sister Golden Bear: And I’m sure would clutch their pearls at the very notion that they were doing any such thing…….even though they clearly are, just with less, say, rabidness and open-faced glee than Fucker and his ilk.
These people truly do not care if queer people die, and especially trans people. It’s incredibly disturbing, because even if Raichik and Carlson would (probably?) not actually do it with their own hands, to me they are just as frightening as those who would.
Lyrebird
Thank you Anne Laurie for keeping the truth right in front of us even when the Vichy Times keeps doing its Vichy thing. And the Steinbeck quote is so sadly on target.
there’s a sickening photo somewhere of women, spouses maybe, thrilled that the terrorists who killed young Emmett Till had gotten away with murder. Just like what Steinbeck describes. ANd MTG and Boebert and so many more.

Serious trigger warning: a pretty gruesome description, so maybe not actually worth clicking on. The gist is in the text above, and the details aren’t really so necessary. But basically, he couldn’t have done these horrible acts himself, but he sure could organize them, that’s for damn sure.

@Chetan Murthy: Yeah, considering it’s possible some of my ancestors were there…not gonna get out of the boat for that, but I trust your assessment. And I’m pretty certain Carlson wouldn’t sully his dainty hands with such acts. He just wants to incite others to do it for him.

It’s always projection with these people. You want intrinsic evil, Raichik? Look in the mirror.
kindness
I can’t believe she hasn’t been attacked on the streets. Goes to show you our side is civilized, unlike her side.
Chetan Murthy
@kindness: Our side are the ones who depend on civilization: if we rip that down, then we’ve got nothing. If *they* rip it down, they’ll find out we can play just as dirty as they can. But we must hope that it never comes to that: that instead, we can simply out-populate them (and out-convert their young to our beliefs).
Dan B
@Sister Golden Bear: I wonder if law enforcement and prosecutors will ever understand that indirect incitement to violence needs to be curbed if we want law and order. It is the problem of lack of representation. If prosecutors and police don’t know any LGBTQ people or work alongside any they don’t notice the threats and have little regard for the crimes they hear about.
Dan B
And many thanks to Anne Laurie for posting this. Many LGBTQ people are feeling that this deranged hatred is building to a crescendo. The rhetoric is deceptive and overflowing with hatred. The MSM seems to pay little heed.
Chetan Murthy
@Dan B: Back in 2016, I thought the MAGAts would target Latinos, or Muslims, b/c those were the groups TFG was attacking in his speeches. And of course Black people. But since 2021, it’s been clear that they zeroed in on LGBTQ folks, starting with T and spreading out to the rest. The one ray of light, is that it would seem that their rabble-rousing isn’t really working with the general public: at least, from what I saw in the election crosstabs, that’s what I gathered.
OTOH, it’s certainly clear that they’ve managed to enrage their base, and 100% agree that they’re building to some sort of Radio Milles Collines-style climax, and that’s really scary. And yeah, the po-po don’t seem to really get it or care.
geg6
Gawd, I hate that disgusting little piece of subhuman garbage. He’s going to get people killed and he so hopes it happens on a large scale. He is an evil, evil little man-like simulation. I wish him nothing but the worst of everything in life.
Alison Rose
@Dan B: Part of the problem is, who gets to determine what qualifies as “indirect incitement”? Most cops are conservative, probably a majority of prosecutors are, too. Things that to us seem like obvious incitement, they might brush off and squeak about free speech. And then they could also turn around and use it against Democrats. I mean, I’m not saying this is correct, but think of how they would see Anne Laurie’s post title here. I’m sure Carlson would have no problem claiming this was indirect incitement to get someone to hurt him. There’s too much subjectivity involved in something like that, and thus even when it’s pretty fucking blatant, so long as he’s not literally saying GO KILL THESE PEOPLE, he’s gonna get away with it.
VOR
@Chetan Murthy: I think the reasoning is pretty straightforward. There are very few trans people so the majority of GOP voters don’t personally know any trans people. This makes it easier to turn trans people into the scary other. And the motivation of trans people probably seems mysterious to a group (MAGAts) who are not good at empathy or self awareness. Much easier to believe trans people want to corrupt the youth or our precious bodily fluids.

When we were in Hawaii in September, I got on the elevator early in the morning, 6-6:30 am. The elevator stopped a couple of floors down, and a guy in a MAGA hat got on, pissed off look on his face. The TV on the elevator played a short spot for a ukulele school, then it switched to Japanese for a rerun of the same spot. The MAGAT turned to me, “See, that’s the fucking problem with this county”. I said, “You believe in free enterprise, you know one of the bedrock principles of the USA, right?” He said, “Sure I do.” I said, “Then settle the hell down, they are pitching the 2nd largest group of tourists that come here and spend lots of money.” I hope that asshole had the worst week of his life, in the most diverse place I’ve ever been. I’m sure he is a big fan of Tucker.

@Sister Golden Bear: Tucker and Raichek are monsters, whipping up hysteria in the hopes of seeing something terrible and exciting that they can point to and report on.
The hospital in Portland, OR where my granddaughter was born 9 weeks ago had bomb threats by the usual idiots claiming the hospital was doing gender reassignment surgery on children, so the delivery rooms were moved to a different building on the hospital grounds.
It was more than a little chilling to find this out. We didn’t see the protesters at all, but I’d seen photos of them in the local press being kept out by a line of cops. Maybe they were gone by the time the baby decided to arrive.

If we substitute the word Republicans for LGBTQ in her little diatribe, we actually get some truth. They are grooming children (and parents) to be monstrous bigots. All of the efforts to turn schools into hateful bigotry factories by indoctrinating kids into their “cult” fit her model perfectly. Distort history. Ban books that teach inclusion and tolerance. Make wild claims without any evidence. And never criticize the “greatest country” ever.
She hears non-MAGAts refer to the Trump “cult” and turns it around to accuse the LGBTQ community of being a cult. The left calls Trump and his minions evil, based on voluminous evidence, and she describes “those people” as being evil, based on fantasies.
The biggest problem we have in this country is just how stupid and ignorant so many people are today. They can be easily manipulated and told their whole world is crumbling because there are people who are different from them and different must be evil. However, just being different isn’t enough, they have to doing unimaginable things and once some people are scared enough, they will resort to violence.

I was looking at stories in the Times of Israel and ran into an article on the recent power grid attacks in the US. It was actually a reprint of an Agence France-Presse article also reprinted by the Voice of America under the title, “Fear of Extremist Campaign after Attack on US Power Station,” Dec. 27 2022.
There was no fresh news about the most recent attacks but there were a couple of background stories:
There was no mention of the sentences given in the Ohio case or the progress of the one in North Carolina.

@Geminid: I was looking for Israeli political news in the Times of Israel. None of it is very good. Benjamin Netanyahu’s 4-party coalition won a 64-56 majority in the Knesset election held November 1 and after protracted negotiations with his coalition partners, Netanyahu’s government is finally ready and should take office Friday. Some typical stories in yesterday’s TOI:
Israeli Defence Force Chief of Staff Kohavi’s call to Netanyahu incensed coalition partner Belazel Smotrich, who called for the period retired IDF generals must wait to run for the Knesset to be increased from two years to ten. It is common for former generals to run for the Knesset, and two ex-chiefs of staff, Benny Gantz and Gadi Eisenkot, serve as members of the opposition in this Knesset.

Just because someone is gay, doesn’t mean they aren’t transphobic, misogynist, and/or racist. There also are LGBT+ people (usually men) who are opposed to gay marriage. Most of the time its because they don’t want to be judged for just wanting anonymous sex.

One of the arguments posted here is that there are not that many trans people. I have heard this one in my own family. But a young person in my own family seems to be very much in the process of transitioning. If the trans issue affects someone you know, you do think much more about the consequences- will the person be able to have children; will they find someone to spend their life with. Will they find acceptance socially? Of course the easy answer is just to love them, but they also must find their way in the world. Being Black in a culture of White power(sorry I hate to word this this way) is difficult enough; being a person whose sex is not apparent is very threatening to many people. So yes I am having a hard time dealing with this issue.

@Jager: Sadly, I have MAGAt family members who moved from Hawaii because “it got too liberal” for them — too many “furriners.” They of course moved to Texas, where they are dismayed to discover that there are too many furriners.
I’m beginning to suspect that that word does not mean what they think it means…

More frightenting. They use other people to commit the violent acts that they desire.
Manipulatipon of others into believing evil falsehoods and committing evil acts is a higher order of evil.
The USA legal system needs to work out how to cope with such incitement by stochastic terrorists, without suppressing political opposition in general.

@Bill Arnold: This election was closer than Netanyahu’s 64-56 Knesset majority indicates. Netanyahu’s four parties got roughly the same amount of votes as the anti-Netanyahu parties. The dynamics of Israel’s system of proportional representation created the disparity in the Knesset.
Two parties, liberal Meretz and Arab Balad, came in under the 3.25% threshold and therefore won no Knesset seats. Had Labor agreed to run a joint slate with Meretz, and Balad not split from the Arab Joint List, there would likely have been a 60-60 result. Then the two Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) would probably have defected and helped current Defense Minister Benny Gantz form a broad based government like the current one but more durable..
Obviously, this did not happen and Netanyahu has engineered what will probably be Israel’s worst government ever. A senior MK of his Likud Party predicts that this government will not last out its allotted 4 1/2 years. And a former IDF chief of staff warned that if this government implements the policies of its 15- member National Religious bloc there will be civil war.

This would all be terribly shocking and upsetting if it were anyone but Tucker. He’s already killed thousands with his vaccine, mask and public health lies.
It’s not that he wants to get people killed – he’s way beyond that now. He’s already happily killed people, and is still on his killing-spree, completely un-hindered and un-tethered.

I’m an elderly big white-bearded country guy, who uses our own shopping bags at the stores. Some time back I saw some brightly colored heavy-duty plastic shopping bags on a sale rack at Kroger’s, and bought a handful for $0.99 each. Used them immediately that day.
When I got home I found that the bright colors were pride rainbows, even had the word pride. No wonder so many well dressed people at the store smiled at me since then… !!!

@Bill Arnold: I am not sure why Balad fell out with the other two parties in the Arab Joint List. Another Arab party, Mansour Abbas’s Ra’am, actually grew its Knesset representation from 4 to 5 MKs this election, apparently validating its decision to help form the current government.
. The Meretz leader asked Labor to form a joint slate but was rebuffed. Labor chief Merev(?) Michaeli was much criticized for this after the election.
So was Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid, who tried to build up his party’s vote at the expense of the two more liberal parties and may have caused Meretz to fall short of the threshold. Meretz is now out of the Knesset for the first time since it was founded as a “peace” party in the 1990s. It entered this century with 12 MKs. Then the suicide bombing campaign during the Second Intfitada knocked the props out from under Meretz’s support and it struggled to remain viable until now.
