Looks like we could use an open thread!

I’ve been feeling kind of blue for a couple of days, so I don’t have much to say, but I can put up an open thread!

So… am I the only person who mistakenly ordered not one but two gifts from Amazon, and inadvertently had the gifts shipped to my house?

Don’t feel bad about that — one year, I was ordering something for myself near the holidays, but forgot to change the shipping address which had defaulted a friend’s since the last time I’d ordered on the site was for her birthday. I didn’t even notice it until I got the shipment confirmation email. So then I had to text her and be like, “Uhhhh…….can you mail this to me when it gets to you??” Thankfully it was something small.

It’s been very rainy here for the past few days and I am really hoping it continues through NYE, to hopefully cut down on the assholes setting off fireworks until 2 in the damn morning.

Also too, fuck Bibi and his posse of putzes:

Netanyahu’s New Ministers Have Very Strict Ideas About Who Is a Jew (NYT gift link)

These parties are imposing on Israel a definition of Judaism that refuses to recognize the validity of the non-Orthodox streams, with which the majority of American Jews identify. They are even demanding a change in the most fundamental link between Israel and the Jewish diaspora: the Law of Return, which grants Israeli citizenship to Jews and their descendants. They have promised to make those with at least one Jewish grandparent and who are not recognized as Jewish by the Orthodox rabbinical establishment ineligible for automatic Israeli citizenship.

In some ways, of course, these divisions are not new. The debate over who is a Jew has been part of Israeli discourse since the creation of the state. The rabbinate has long held control over family law. (Civil marriages are not conducted in Israel.) But this is the first time that one side has sought to assert itself so completely over Israel’s governance. It has the potential to estrange many non-Israeli Jews.

A religious schism within the Jewish people — fewer than 20 million worldwide — would mean that they would no longer have the sense of joint purpose that has sustained this persecuted people through millenniums. Jews are told that each Jew holds responsibility for Jews everywhere, that we must act for our brethren in peril. But with these new laws redefining who belongs, that religionwide sense of comity would cease to exist.

They’ve blathered about this shit before, that Reform Jews aren’t real Jews and all that shit. But this still makes me angry. Also, it’s fucking stupid. Nazis don’t give a shit what synagogue we go to, they hate all of us. And I don’t understand the point of wanting to shrink the community down as much as possible. Fuckers.

It has been a pretty rotten week here too. On Xmas I had a “date”-or at least somebody to spend the day with. Got her a present she wanted, brought her family food because she didn’t want to cook. She stood me up and didn’t even call me back. Fed her dinner to the dog.

Tuesday I drove to the cemetery and showed the dog the plot where “Mommy” was. Tried my best to get through the services. I’ve been crying my eyes out so much that they hurt. I kissed the coffin before they lowered it. I told my partner I’d see her again someday but I don’t really believe it. It is just something you say to keep yourself from going crazy.

I’ll spend NYE with my ex because I don’t want to stay home. At least the dogs will have fun.

Next year has to be better. Even boring would be an improvement. TKU WaterGirl for letting me vent. Hoping for Cole to feel better.

@Alison Rose: I think the two Haredi (Ultra-Orthodox) parties won about 19 of the coalition’s 64 Knesset seats. They drove some very hard bargains with Netanyahu when forming this government. I read that at one point they were demanding that the electrical grid be shut down on the Sabbath.

This demand was apparently a bargaining chip. Israelis will still have electricity on the Sabbath, but as you say longstanding rules regarding the Law of Return will be thrown out.

An ex spouse can be good company especially in tough times because they know you very well, and if you are still speaking the split probably managed to get rid of some of the sand in your drawers that caused it. Lots of people here to talk to at almost all hours, so you can have a type of company. Doesn’t entertain the dog though so seeing the ex is probably good.

Well, last week I had a dinner at a restaurant with friends planned for my birthday.  Reservation was for 9, maybe 10 people.  Ended up just being me, my wife and one other friend.  I knew some people were only tentative and would likely miss it but it still really pissed me off to have so many people bail.  It’s one of the never-ending frustration of having my birthday two days before Christmas.  Unless you have family nearby (and like them) which I don’t, it makes it damn near impossible to have any significant party/outing for your birthday.

Then yesterday I went to try and use a Visa gift card that one of my students’ parents had given me and it was expired.  It was probably just an honest mistake of something they re-gifted (fine by me) and didn’t realize it had expired.  Still disappointing though since I was gonna treat us to dinner.

Feeling warm fuzzies tonight toward our mail carrier, who kindly knocked on my neighbor’s apartment door to let her know Amazon via LaserShip (boooooooo) had left a massive pile of packages in the lobby of the building…. three doors down from ours and they’d been sitting there for days (the carrier recognized my neighbor’s name, which is somewhat unusual).  The letter carrier walked my neighbor to the building and let her in so she could recover all of our stuff.

Not the first time the letter carriers who deliver to our block have fixed an Amazon delivery screw up for us.  The actual Amazon delivery folks are pretty good, but when something is being delivered via LaserShip… ugh.  I cross my fingers and hope for the best.

@Yutsano: And then about 8 years later, after he had broken with the Likud party on the issue of a two state solution, super-hawk Ariel Sharon was laid low by a stroke. Sharon might have had a chance to put the Camp David accords into being, but after him no one in the Israeli Right was willing and no one in the Center had the clout to carry out the accords.

The suicide bombing campaign during the second Intfitada pushed peace further out of reach. It achieved none of its goals by killing over 600 Israelis, but it knocked the props from under the Israeli Left. The pro-peace Meretz party entered this century with 12 MKs but struggled to stay in the Knesset afterwards. This last election saw them miss the 3.25% threshold by one tenth of a percentage point and they are now out of the Knesset.

The anti-Netanyahu parties actually were about even with his in the vote November 1st. But Meretz and the Arab party Balad gathered 6% of that vote between them and were blanked. What might have been a 60-60 result was instead a 64-56 win by Netanyahu’s 4-party coalition.

And I set what is probably a world record for nerdiest possible gifts by giving my niece and nephew and cousin’s kid some electronics kits: a microcontroller, a breadboard, a bunch of parts, and a project book. My end-of-year is about as low key as you can get: I have no plans to go out, and the weather is sucky anyway.

I’m glad to see the end of 2022, though in truth it’s getting a bad rap.  Most of the really awful things (like a Covid resurgence) were baked in, because humanity has handled the pandemic about as badly as it possibly could.  The other ongoing awfulness, in the economy and the climate, are also baked in because humanity is just no good at saying No to itself, and even less good at saying No to rich people.

And a lot of good stuff happened, like President Biden’s bullet list of legislative successes and the GOP failing to catch its predicted Red Wave, neither of which were “baked in,” but required a lot of hard work by a lot of people.

I’m not at all happy that two close friends, and Mom, have had extended hospital stays in the last month (Mom is having hers right now). But its hard to separate that from the fact that they’re in their 70s and 80s.  It’s a blessing they’ve been able to enjoy good long lives, and joyful retirements.  But no one gets out alive, and the best one can hope for along those lines is a peaceful departure while sleeping.  An accelerating decline is the price of admission for most of us.

The hardest thing for me is realizing that their latest health setbacks are less likely to be ones they bounce back from; that anything which was a bump in the road previously could be the end of them this time.  I don’t know how to deal with that.

Which kind of circles back to that whole “saying No to itself” and what is or isn’t baked in.  We’re bound to see more stories about society paying the price for allowing oligarchy to exist, and the whole ecosphere paying the price for humanity’s inability to live within its environmental means.  It’s the same accelerating decline, but writ on a much larger scale.

….Well, this turned out to be a cheerful comment.

    Sorry.

    Happy New Years, anyway!

LaserShip.  Let’s play who wrote these blurbs that came up on Google.

    blurb #1

Why do companies ship with LaserShip?

Companies choose to ship with LaserShip because LaserShip provides innovative, best-in-class delivery solutions to help retailers and businesses meeting their customers’ expectations of fast, reliable last mile delivery while reducing costs, ensuring capacity, and building flexibility within their supply chains.

    blurb #2

    Is LaserShip a good carrier?

This is a unethical-company that is both incompetent and outright deceptive. They will claim a package has been delivered and actually give you a time and location of the delivery. Unfortunately for them we have security cameras that verify they never entered the premises at all, much less in delivering a package.

@Ken: i have thought of one myth that ought to be true.

The British vulgar gesture is two fingers, the fore- and index fingers facing towards the antagonist.

During the Hundred Years War, the English military superpower was their longbow archers.

The myth is that if the French captured a longbowman, they would cut off those two fingers so they could no longer draw a bow, and before a battle, the English archers would make the two-fingered salute at the French lines.

    @SpaceUnit:

If you don’t like answering, it’s fine, but how close are you to retirement? The reason I ask is because with time your investments should recover. I assume you’re invested in total stock and bond index funds in a retirement account such as a 401k, correct?

It’s important to keep in mind that the US stock market has been in a bull market for the last 10-12 years, the longest in history, so of course a 20% drop is the worst performance it’s had since 2008 (can’t remember how bad the COVID crash was, but the recovery was super quick). It certainly didn’t help that bonds took a crap, though less so, thanks to interest rate hikes.

If you’re still contributing, you could look at it this way: lower prices mean likely higher future returns and stocks are on sale. Yields on bonds are also going up.

Sorry, my guy. I’m a saver too, and it’s not fun watching your balances go down

Soggy California is soggy. We are receiving lots of rain and the ground is saturated like it has not been in years; thus, runoff!

Case in point: the Sacramento River at downtown Sacramento has been loafing along at about 5 feet msl for months and months and, well, pretty much all of 2022, today included. It is predicted to jump to 24 feet New Years Day. Monitor stage is in effect anytime it reaches 27, but that’s not in the cards. Which is fine because too much of a good thing is too much.

Yeah, it might just be an NYC thing; I don’t know.  But they quite frequently drop off packages here that have an address nowhere close to what’s printed on the label, and often drop our packages off somewhere else (with no photo, unlike the actual Amazon delivery guys).  I checked the buildings on either side of us, which is usually where they end up, but LaserShip outdid themselves this time.

I still had to ask a friend to come up and shovel me out, though, because I’m still too wiped out too do more than move slowly through the house. It’s nice to have friends that will drive up and shovel out a snowdrift that’s blown up in front of your front door and garage so you can get out again…and so things like packages can be delivered.
