That game was a matter of some interest to Pro football teams: Denver (aka “The Hapless Broncos”) have been looking to recruit Harbaugh as head coach.
The thinking was: If he wins this game, and then the College Championship, that would be a culmination of one ambition, and maybe he’ll want to come back to the NFL to try again for a Super Bowl.
But apparently that’s not going to happen, so I’m not sure how their calculus will work now. Maybe “he’s lost the Championship Game every year, so maybe he’ll give up in frustration”?

Happy New Year’s Eve to everyone.
We are having a bit of a rough time here in NorCal for the past 24 hours with the first of two atmospheric rivers bringing rain, rain, rain and wind, wind, wind causing flooding, road closures and evacuations. It’s been a long day.
By all accounts, he’s been happy at Michigan and sees no reason to leave – and Michigan has been equally happy with him.
But those sunny assessments were predicated on the assumption that he’d fulfill at least one of his overarching goals, football-wise: Beating Ohio State and/or winning the Championship.
Which, as Shalimar points out, he has failed to do every year. Including this one.
So: does he keep trying? Will the school let him keep trying?
I mean – it’s not like he’s guaranteed a Super Bowl appearance, much less a victory, wherever he goes in the NFL. Some teams would need a long rebuild of players and culture.
So: does he keep trying? Will the school let him keep trying?
I mean – it’s not like he’s guaranteed a Super Bowl appearance, much less a victory, wherever he goes in the NFL. Some teams would need a long rebuild of players and culture.
Oh, Michigan will keep him on as long as he keeps winning, beating OSU and making the playoffs. And he’ll keep trying, he’s a very competitive man, and he’s proven to be a very successful football coach. He’s won everywhere he’s been and is known as a program builder. Re-building in the NFL isn’t that onerous of a task, Harbaugh proved that with the Niners, and he took them to a Super Bowl, that team was destroyed from within by Trent Baalke IIRC.
@James E Powell: Huh. I don’t follow him (or Michigan, or CFB generally) very closely, so I missed that. I’m sure his arrogance (expecting the job to be handed to him) endeared him to the hiring managers!
The only reason I’m following the story now is because I’m in Seattle, therefore a Seahawks fan, and therefore have been OD’ing on schadenfreude since the Hawks traded Russell Wilson to Denver, where he has…. performed poorly, shall we say. The trade picks we got for trading him look better every time Denver loses.
Since Denver is bandying Harbaugh’s name about as someone they’d be very interested in interviewing for the HC position, it’s something I pay attention to.

Technically speaking, the Penn State seal also specifies “The Pennsylvania State University.” I don’t have a dog in this fight, despite working for PSU, since I went to Pitt and still only cheer for Panthers. So as a disinterested observer, I have to say that yes, how Buckeyes refer to their university is obnoxiously pretentious. However, I hope it never changes because we Pennsylvanians like to make fun of Ohio State and, well, the entire state of Ohio. 😉

@CaseyL: Who’da thought we Seahawks fans would be saying we got the better deal a season later?! Wilson broke my daughter’s heart when he proved to be an ARod. I got her a Geno teeshirt for Xmas ;D
The difference between The Ohio State University and The Colorado College is that OSU is the largest and best of the state universities in Ohio. In Colorado, that title would fall to the University of Colorado, not CC, which is neither large, nor a state institution.
Funny, but when the word “university” (or college) comes first in the title, the word “The” automatically appears. People are far more likely to say “I went to “The” University of Georgia than I went to University of Georgia. And whether “the is pronounced “Thee” or “Thuh” depends on first letter of the next word. It is normal to say “Thuh” Colorado School of Mines.”
The whole argument about OSU calling itself The Ohio State University seems silly and a waste of time. I have no idea who started it, but given their football rivalry, it wouldn’t surprise me if it started at THE University of Michigan. (THEE OHIO… vs. THUH University, simply depends on the first letter of next word. It isn’t special emphasis — unless you insist it is.)
74.
Geminid
@Jackie: Seattle seems have traded Russell Wilson at the right time. He’s lost some of his mobility and that’s part of what made him so good. Wilson still has his competitive spirit but he may not ever be the quarterback he was at Seattle.
As for Denver, between the draft pick they gave up and Wilson’s guaranteed salary, the Broncos could be looking forward to some very lean years. Harbaugh may decide to pass on them. There will be better opportunities for him if he wants to be an NFL head coach again.

Last year, he interviewed with the Minnesota Vikings. Reports were that he went there expecting the job to be handed to him.
James E Powell
@artem1s:
Sorry. I knew that, but wires crossed in my head. Cincinnati Bearcats, OU Bobcats.
HumboldtBlue
@CaseyL:
CaseyL

I really have no interest in football, after working 200+ NFL or CFB games .
However, the internet is out, here in the East Bay, so no prime video or Netflix for me tonight. So this puppy/house sitter is going old school!
Therefore it is DVDs! First up is a “A Fish Called Wanda”.
After that, I’m thinking of watching Ken Burns’ “Baseball” or “Jazz”.
Have a great NYE, my dear jackels.

@Missouri Buckeye:

It just dawned on me, I know OSU’s JT Tuimoloau’s mother, Alofa. I met her and covered her when she played basketball at Moorpark College in Ventura County. She actually ended up living in Humboldt County for a while.
Jackie
@CaseyL: Who’da thought we Seahawks fans would be saying we got the better deal a season later?! Wilson broke my daughter’s heart when he proved to be an ARod. I got her a Geno teeshirt for Xmas ;D
mrmoshpotato
@James E Powell: Go Bearcats!
James E Powell
@mrmoshpotato:
They just lost their head coach. Sorry to see it. The program was on the way up.

@persistentillusion:

@James E Powell: Pomposity definition: I don’t see anyone saying THE Pennsylvania State University even though that’s it’s official name. Just sayin’.
I don’t know anything about the fans of any college teams. Except for the occasional “GO DAWGS!” in the comments here LOL.
HumboldtBlue
What an entertaining game, this is fun to watch, particularly on the back of the first playoff game.
columbusqueen
@frosty: Go Bucks. O-H-I-O!
mrmoshpotato
SACKED!
🐾BillinGlendaleCA
@HumboldtBlue: Or as we called Moorpark in TO, Kraproom spelled backwards.
HumboldtBlue
What a fucking game!
@🐾BillinGlendaleCA:
As is your wont.

@TriassicSands:
The first people I heard say it were NFL players in those little introduction videos they were doing for a while, and they were definitely leaning into it. The “the” was louder and prolonged, often with a beat between “the” and “Ohio”.
My first reaction was to think they were teasing a teammate from OU, but then noticed that every OSU alum was doing it. Definitely left a bad impression.
Jackie
Raven’s going nuts!
eta: Now he’s cussing a blue streak.
mrmoshpotato
CONGRATULATIONS, GEORGIA BULLDOGS!
Jackie
And the Dawgs win!!!
SiubhanDuinne
WOW! DAWGS WIN!!
And on very nearly the stroke of midnight 🥂
HumboldtBlue
What a game, and all respect to OSU, they were there, they were right there, and I don’t like OSU in the least, but that was a helluva fight.
Georgia v TCU, nobody expects the Horned Frogs!
And 2022 took some all-time greats from us.
raven
HOW BOUT THEM DAWGS!!!!!
Jerzy Russian
@raven: Drop your linen and start your grinnin’! That was one hell of a finish.
raven
@Jerzy Russian: I thought we was cooked.
HumboldtBlue
@raven:
So did CJ Stroud. He was player of the game.
Jerzy Russian
@raven: Yeah, the ESPN gamecast app had OSU’s winning percentage around 90% for a while.
raven
@HumboldtBlue: No, Stenson Bennett, the walk on was the MVP!!!!
HumboldtBlue
@raven:
Ol’ Stetson did his thing and the play-calling finally caught up to that OSU defense and to the winners go the spoils, but CJ worked over Georgia in a way we haven’t seen since 2017 or so.
Georgia came through, and Bennett is one of the great college football stories, so enjoy, bask, revel, it’s New Year’s Eve, well here it still is.
raven
@HumboldtBlue: You mean since we beat Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl! Was at dat one and I’ll be in LA the 9th!
raven
@raven: And we were down 17 in that one!
Soprano2
That was quite an ending, I was watching it at the bar and I thought Georgia was done for. Congrats to Georgia. I was thinking about you going nuts, Raven, as I watched the end.
Joe Falco
I was at one of the bars in downtown Athens, and it seemed like both the countdown to 2023 and the Dawgs’ win nearly matched up with each other. The roar that was let out at the end was deafening. Just a nail-biter of a game that will go down in history books.

Why can’t the J-E-T-S Jets get a QB like
