President Biden Marks the Two-Year Anniversary of the January 6th Insurrection with a ceremony to honor some great people that the entire US (except the traitors) owes a great debt of thanks:
Some we know by name: Video embed below the fold.
Jocelyn Benson
Rusty Bowers
Harry Dunn
Caroline Edwards
Michael Fanone
Ruby Freeman
Eugene Goodman
Shaye Moss
Brian Sicknick
And others we don’t know by name. Short descriptions for all 12:
James E Powell
Will the cable shows be covering it?

Thank you for front-paging this. We are fortunate as a country that they acted as they did.
WaterGirl
I keep thinking it must have been a year ago because my brain mostly insists that it’s still 2022.
Baud
@WaterGirl:
Time keeps on
ticking, ticking, ticking, slipping, slipping, slipping into the future.WaterGirl
@Baud: I can’t recall the name of that song or I would listen to it right now on YouTube. Only until Joe starts talking, of course!
Baud
@WaterGirl:
Ugh, I got the lyrics wrong. It’s slipping, slipping, slipping…
ETA fixed it.

@WaterGirl:
Fly Like an Eagle – Steve Miller Band
WaterGirl
@Baud: with 2 minutes to spare on the edit clock! :-)
WaterGirl
@James E Powell: I started to play that from your link, then realized that 3 different videos running at the same time was probably not a good idea, battery-life-wise!
Timill
@WaterGirl: And then one day you find Ten years have got behind you…
JPL
Both ABC and NBC in Atlanta are carrying President Biden.
Ruckus
@WaterGirl:
I used to do that, seemingly be unable to remember that time goes on. As I’ve gotten a tad older time going on becomes more apparent and I’ve had no problem remembering that time marches on regardless if we pay attention or not. It may also just being thankful that I’ve made it another 365 days and a lot of people I’ve known haven’t.

Americans. Patriots. Quiet and overt heroes.
I am proud for them.
zhena gogolia
This is great. I’ll have to watch later. Thank you!
MattF
@WaterGirl: One year per year.
JPL
Such brave individuals and the medals are well deserved. In some ways, today seems worse because the insurrectionists have gained ground. You watch what is happening in the house and realize that we have a long way to go to preserve democracy.
CaseyL
Tuned in in time for the actual awards.
A good ceremony, appropriately somber, and very moving.

@JPL:
This.
So many people do not want freedom for anyone but themselves. It makes no sense but then again we are human and so many things are as far away from logic as is possible.
Please do not forget that the people honored here are not the only people that did their duty 2 yrs ago today. And never forget that this nation is still working on always making life and government better, even as we face those that try to subvert democracy for their own hate and dishonor.
lowtechcyclist
@H.E.Wolf:
Seconded.
WaterGirl
@MattF: It’s kind of funny. For work stuff, I very much know it’s 2023, without even thinking.
But for politics, it’s still 2022.
WaterGirl
@JPL: Truth.
WaterGirl
@CaseyL: Tears were running down my face as they were actually giving the awards to people and their families.

All the medal recipients are heroes. But I am particularly touched to see Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss on that list. Whenever I think about what they endured, it makes me cry and it fills me with rage at the same time.
Matt McIrvin
@JPL: They’re going to try again and again, in different ways.
WaterGirl
@Matt McIrvin: Truth.
Uncle Cosmo
So many people want unlimited mercy for their own transgressions and drastic unforgiving justice for everyone else’s.
Matt McIrvin
@Ruckus:
I admit I have a hard time believing that it’s enough. They’ve got so many Weird Tricks that keep mutating, and with sufficient bad faith they are infinite in number. I feel like this country is going to go down very soon in some profoundly stupid way, in roughly the spirit of “there’s no rule that says a dog can’t play basketball.” And the people who believe in rule of law will be forced to either play along or become revolutionaries. And we’re no good at being revolutionaries.
Rusty
Another failed vote for speaker. They are back again tonight to try again. My guess is Kevin gets his speaker position tonight or tomorrow. The last holdouts will get a few more concessions (they already got backing to hold the country hostage to the debt limit, thanks Kevin!), and will either vote present or not at all, giving him the majority of the votes cast. This will go down as one of the most dysfunctional house sessions ever, with much worse to come the next two year. Ugh.

@James E Powell:
Nice reggae cover.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
David Jolly, who’s been saying all week on MSNBC that McCarthy isn’t gonna make it, just said he’s probably gonna make it.
Baud
@Jim, Foolish Literalist:
Pundits suck.
JPL
@Baud: Fortunately I’m not a pundit.
Sure Lurkalot
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Why the hell are David Jolly, Michael Steele, Rick Wilson and fucking Charlie Sykes on MSNBC? For some segments there is not a single Democrat on air. These people have been wrong, for years, about their party, their vision of America and themselves.
Seems to me that MSNBC could have on the likes of Charlie Pierce and Heather Cox Richardson, early and often, for the sake of example, but no, they seem to go with the fake apopletic Republicans.

Traveling for work but will watch later.
Thankful for all these people and their courage.
topclimber
Hey, I know the GQP has made enemies of us all, but an earlier thread alluded to US Reps having to choose between family and country.
I recall a practice in regular Congress that allows partisan opponents to cancel each other out. FFS what does it matter if a few Dems sit out a ballot so people can live their lives when crucial events intrude?
How many Dems would have to no show to cancel these 2? or 3? Reps?
BenCisco 🇺🇸🎖️🖥️♦️
@Sure Lurkalot:
Ownership’s mission is to slight Democrats, at all times and in all ways.
mrmoshpotato
Can we correct the spelling of “Michael” up top?
Baud
@topclimber: It may be a hard number to calculate because McCarthy still has to win over 2 of the holdouts, I believe. Dems don’t want to actually make it easier for him, even if they would want to be nice if his victory were locked in.
topclimber
@Baud: As long as he doesn’t collect it on Insurrection Day. Eight hours to go.
Baud
@topclimber: I don’t really care. I’m actually kind of glad it may happen in the dead of night on a weekend, where they won’t have a chance to celebrate their “accomplishment” in the media.
eclare
@Eljai: Same here. Just doing their jobs, targeted by fascists, threatened, and lives totally disrupted. And no one can convince me that being Black women had nothing to do with it.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
Remind me again, why did Manchin and Sinema refuse to raise the debt ceiling last year to avoid having the country be held hostage to insane Republicans? They may have large egos, but they’re not stupid
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@eclare: no doubt. IF they’ve done a gofundme for their lawsuit against (among others?) Giuliani, I’ve missed it, but if they do, I’m in. I hope they hit him harder than his ex-wives.
Baud
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka):
I can’t speak for them but I think they oppose taking an action that is premised on the idea that Republicans will act irresponsibly.
Maybe they are stupid.
BenCisco 🇺🇸🎖️🖥️♦️
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): On the contrary, they have SUPEREGOS and they ARE stupid.
Old School
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka):
Manchin’s stated reason is that it should be bipartisan.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Baud: on this anniversary, I remember that just before the R’s filibustered the would-be joint committee (I think is the term) on the insurrection, Manchin was using is to defend the filibuster. I have to believe there are ten good patriots on the other side, or something like that. There weren’t, he didn’t waver.
that said, I think the House Committee we got was much better than anything we would have got otherwise. I do not remember the Keane-Hamilton committee with admiration.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: IANAL but I bet they have attorneys on a contingent fee basis. Should be, I hope, a slam dunk.
James E Powell
@Sure Lurkalot:
Because “The News” is whatever Republicans say it is. Been this way since the 90s.
James E Powell
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka):
Because they each support Republican positions for their own reasons. With Sinema, I think it’s because she dislikes Democrats and/or wants to please her newest & best-est donor friends. With Manchin, I think it’s because he agrees with Republicans on many economic issues.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@James E Powell:
How does defaulting on the national debt and causing the global financial system to possibly collapse please their donors?
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)

If he really believes that, he is an idiot. And he hasn’t been paying attention that the situation on the ground has changed. This isn’t the 1990s or even the 2000s anymore

@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): Possibilities:
WaterGirl
@mrmoshpotato: Thank you!
JPL
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): Depends on who are their donors.
Msb
Thanks for posting this. Somber but inspiring good fuel for us during the next stages of the fight.
dww44
@Sure Lurkalot: I strongly disagree with your take. Just as the 1/06 committee relied almost wholly on Republican witnesses, when it comes to punditing on Republican situations, who better to weigh in and offer insight than former Republicans. Besides, all those you name are quality people who’ve always put the country ahead of their party. Their presence on a mostly liberal news network is a good thing.
MSNBC is not, nor should it be, a wholly owned subsidiary of the progressive movement. We don’t need any more wholly partisan news outlets. We need more media committed to be fair and truthful, objective and impartial.
The Thin Black Duke
@dww44: And this is why young people don’t watch the news anymore.
James E Powell
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka):
Because they are not going to default or cause the global financial system to collapse. They are going to extract concessions from the Biden administration that will outrage all of us, but be pleasing to Sinema’s donors & Manchin’s sensibilities.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@James E Powell:
I thought the Biden administration was going to stand firm and not make concessions and the Republicans will blink?
WaterGirl
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): Oh my god, it’s the night of endless questions.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
WaterGirl
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): Of course not. But sometimes your schtick is exasperating, and it can be tiresome. Today is one of those days.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@WaterGirl:
For what’s it worth, sorry. Sometimes I get overexcited and get carried away
WaterGirl
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): Sometimes I think there are two different people who comment with your nym. The question-asker / “I’m sorry don’t be mad at me” Goku, and the other one.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@WaterGirl:
Well, I’m not. I’m the same person, warts and all, honestly. I occasionally let my anxieties get the better of me. I’ve been trying to make some progress over the past few months to correct it and be more optimistic. I guess I have more work to do
