Let’s have a music thread!
And an announcement:
Think about joining one of the Balloon Juice postcard writing parties & music threads – starting this Tuesday. Posts will go up at 7:45!! All times Eastern. Only if there is interest, we can do this every Tuesday night, since there always seems to be a special election somewhere!
Postcard info from Lizzy (Mousebumples) from Wisconsin
Postcards are a great way to encourage and get our Voters to the polls.
From the Postcards to Voters website FAQ:
Q – Is there any evidence to indicate mail-based campaigns make a real difference at the ballot box?
A – Yes! Political scientists have conducted dozens of experiments on the effect of direct mail and find that, on average, mailers increase turnout when they use “messages that emphasize civic duty or the importance of making one’s voice heard” (Gerber and Green 2015, pg. 58). Additional evidence also shows that making the interaction feel personalized, rather than just a blanket message from an organization, is key to increasing the effectiveness of voter outreach.

When Dems turn out, we win!
If you’re already an approved Postcards to Voters writer or you are writing with Postcard Patriots, you’re all set to get addresses to write. If not, please go to http://postcardpatriots.com/ to request addresses.
You’ll need postcards (which may include cardstock that you’ve cut down), postcard stamps (or first-class in a pinch), pens and/or markers, and postcard snacks. Don’t forget snacks, drinks, and whatever gets you in the postcarding groove.

I’m not sure if this has been posted already, but in music news, John Fogerty has won back the rights to his CCR catalog.
After 50 years.

How about John Fogerty, who has only been fighting for rights to his own music half a century.
Kids, never give up.
Was once able to visit The Factory studio in Berkeley, where “Cosmos Factory” was recorded and it still looked just like the album cover.
Jinx!

We have tickets to Bonnie Raitt in March, in the remodeled Community Center Theater. Can’t wait.
Last time we saw her, Mavis Staples opened. Does a night out get better? It does not.
WaterGirl
@Scout211: How the hell can you lose the rights to your own catalog?

Cole’s upcoming road trip (last night’s post) got me thinking about this song that makes me want to drive really fast from Omaha to the Mountains, and always has me depress the acceleratrix a little too hard. I was too young to live that 70s life, but I feel a certain nostalgia for it
WaterGirl
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: For me, the Running on Empty album by Jackson Browne is the quintessential music for a road trip.

Music, eh? What have I even been listening to lately? I made a Pandora station based on that Irish band Solas and use it for background music. Gosh, looks like they disbanded years ago. I’m old.

@WaterGirl:
Another good road trip song:
Born to be Wild
Bonus Easy Rider scene.
WaterGirl
@Scout211: Yes!
Dangerman
@WaterGirl: Jackson Browne? Another Central Coaster! CA, I mean (where I presently am NOT, which is kinda heartbreaking given some of the flooding shit going on up there).
This is a postcard thread? This JB should fit well:
The river opens for the righteous … someday

Cool! Music Thread!
Elan Trotman, “Cape Cod, Ma“
WaterGirl
@Dangerman: This isn’t a postcard thread, it’s just giving people a heads up about the postcard thread on Tuesday night so they can get signed up and get addresses ahead of time, if they are interested.
danielx
In obligation, since it’s a musical thread.
Jeff Beck – Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers
Dangerman
@WaterGirl: Oh, it’s a music thread about a postcard thread. Well, that JB still works.
I gotta go find the JB where he (actually, his backup singers) added some great lyrics to Lives in the Balance. The search begins! Well, after dessert (I have priorities, dammit).
WaterGirl
@Dangerman: I had never heard that song before.
WaterGirl
@Dangerman: When you find it , post it. :-)

My monitor went day-udd suddenly last night, so I’m on this little phone. Hope to be back at a keyboard by Tuesday.
@trollhattan: Oooo, looking forward to Ms. Staples at Orchestra Hall in a few weeks.
WaterGirl
@FelonyGovt: Your link didn’t work so I tried to add another one in, but I don’t know if it’s the version of the song you intended.
WaterGirl
@prostratedragon: How frustrating!
Dangerman
@danielx: Jeff Beck (RIP).
That clip reminded me of another Central Coast set of musicians, with the incomparable Jennifer Young on the bass (Victor Wooten, one of the best around, did it for their record, but I’m in love with Jenn (sorry Victor); please don’t tell her, I find, sadly, that the nickname Dangerman scares off most dates).

These songs just seem relevant somehow. Shout out to fellow Californians.

Eurythmics, Here comes the rain again

@WaterGirl: Yep, just all of a sudden. But I can’t complain, as it was close to 7 years old. Got a fair price on a Samsung 32 that’s on the way.
WaterGirl
@Scout211: Can’t go wrong with Who’ll stop the rain!

Saw something about unusual cover versions and was reminded of Rachel Barton Pine’s serious hobby: Metallica’s “One.”

@WaterGirl:
FelonyGovt’s link eventually resolves to this version, although it technically goes to the Google search page.

@Scout21
Well, for California you’ve got to have the Sir Douglas Quintet: “The Rains Came.”
WaterGirl
@Steeplejack: Thanks! I updated the link.
WaterGirl
@Dangerman: Wow, that’s haunting. I love that. I wish I could find the lyrics for the 4th verse.
I’m leaving the tabs open so I can listen again tomorrow.
Dangerman
@prostratedragon: Excellent!
Staying with different Metallica covers, let me share the wonderful Viktoriya Yermolyeva:
Master of Puppets
I just looked her up and she’s from Kyiv. Damn.

I’m eating 떡볶이 (Korean rice cakes) and 양념통닭 (spicy fried chicken) while waiting to go watch a friend perform some music here soon. I don’t have much more to say than that.
EDIT: still in Canada.
Mousebumples
I’m off to bed, but I’ll try to check back in the morning in case there are any postcard questions. 😊

@Dangerman: She’s amazing

When I was a teenager, Steppenwolf was my travel music – “Born to be Wild,” of course, but everything else on the album. If I wasn’t actually traveling, I’d imagine doing so, listening to the music.
As an early-20-something, I went on a package tour of Europe geared specifically to young people. We started every morning listening to “Take the Long Way Home” by Supertramp – with the rest of the album playing throughout the bus ride. To this day, that album evokes my European trip.
More recently, for a few years the CDs I played during road trips tended towards metal goth (Within Temptation), Celtic metal (Ockham’s Razor), and, because I’m fond of show tunes sung by strong female vocalists, Sarah Brightman.
I don’t have a “music to write postcards to,” though I enjoy checking out the stuff posted here!
ETA: Didn’t link to all the music I mentioned, since IIRC too many links are a no-no on WP!
Leslie
Thanks to a comment from H.E. Wolf in a previous thread, I ordered some postcards and stamps, so now I just need addresses and I’ll be able to get in on the postcard action. I’ll be late, though, because at 4:30 pm Pacific time I’m still at work.
Music … have some Ellen Jewel.

The car I bought a couple years ago has XM satellite radio. I mostly listen to the Bluesville channel which as well as the musicians I’ve enjoyed forever opens my ears to new stuff. Most recently I discovered Thorbjørn Risager from Denmark. Denmark has Blues Musicians? Singing in English? Who Knew? Apparently he’s done well in Europe for while.

Since all the British Invasion bands are approaching 80 it’s time to start listening to some kids. These guys are all under 20.

Well, if we’re going for the youngsters, how about the Linda Lindas?
Pretty cool for a bunch of kids just turning 16.

@CaseyL: In 1979 we went to Norway and Sweden. The former was a so-called business trip my dad arranged. So-called because it was really a lovely 36 hour jaunt on a corporate yacht and a few evenings in Sandefjord (90 mins drive outside Oslo, HQ then for a shipping co. my dad was in talks with).
While the adults went out to dinner, the teen kids of the buisness folks hosted us for two parties. Hey, man, Americans in the small town of Sandefjord! (pop. about 34K back then).
Anyway, the point being: Practically nonstop playing of Breakfast in America for those two evenings. For years after, any time I heard it (and my brother bought a copy post haste on our return to the US), I’d have keen memories of these nice kids, their charming but not very good attempts to make American food, and, uhhh, endless very competitive leg wrestling matches.
CaseyL
@RaflW: It certainly brings back memories. And that warms my heart, that Breakfast in America is evocative “travel music” for you, too!
What’s funny is, the songs are mostly sad ones – even angry ones – but the tunes aren’t, and the tunes were what we responded to.
prostratedragon
@Dangerman: Check, that’s also really good! I hope she’s still playing somewhere

@Yutsano: We just discovered a tiny Korean restaurant within walking distance of our new place. I don’t know any Korean, but there was excellent bibim bap and a delicious (albeit bland) noodles-with-black-beans dish…

@Leslie: Sounds like a plan! Postcards to Voters can provide some addresses.
You can either text JOIN to 484-275-2229 or email [email protected] to get started with postcards for that group.
If last year’s posts were any indication, I’d expect the postcarding to run 2 or more hours. But feel free to join in whenever your schedule allows. I’m guessing WaterGirl would be willing to post up some pictures of completed postcards too. 😊
WaterGirl
@James E Powell: Thanks for the back story.
