While in Lamu, we of course booked a sunset sail on a dhow and sailed within a cluster of similar dhows from Lamu toward Manda Island, heading up a large channel lined with mangrove toward the sunset. Folks in neighboring dhow were partying, jumping into the water, and singing. We were the mellow dhow…

Mangroves lining a large tidal channel on Manda Island. (I read on the Lamu Marine Conservation Trust website that there’s an active program to replant mangrove where they’ve been over-harvested.)

A passing dhow.

Heading back to Shella quay.

Along with the other dhows.

Our crew (except the skipper) checking out the other dhows.

Ah, Kenya!

Beautiful and serene. I visited the neighboring Tanzania and Zanzibar. Kenya is on my bucket list.

I am relaxed just looking at the photos!

Good to see people finally appreciating the importance of the mangrove.

[I’m headed to Truckee in half an hour—wish me luck in beating the storm.] I encourage anyone interested in a more complete view of Lamu to watch this vimeo. (Carol, owner of the Peloni, was key to getting the conservation trust started.) Gives you a flavor of the archipelago and the islanders’ unique traditions. Magical. Take a look »

Calming and relaxing pictures, thank you. I did a little sailing when I was young and even decades later, there is something compelling about a sail taut in the wind.
Thanks again.
