Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Peak wingnut was a lie.

All your base are belong to Tunch.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

After roe, women are no longer free.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Come on, man.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

I am reposting because it was so late last night when I posted it originally and I really wanted more people to see this wonderful studio and this artist’s mission. We are planning a trip to New Orleans in the next year or so and this studio is now on my list to visit.

Late Night Open Thread: Art Has Power

I was setting up the DVR to record the town hall and caught this interview (embedded below). I was so taken by the art, and then Brandan Odums and his mission, I thought they deserved to be highlighted.

This piece (lots of fun stuff at this link) is now on my wishlist:

i watched the msnbc special tonight, from which you posted the clip.   i found it satisfying —  i wasn’t expecting a veteran of the little rock 9 in 1957.

It seems Mr Santos, among his many other accomplishments, was also a drag performer.

His new friend marge is not going to like that

NEW: Alabama is one of the few states that elected an election-denying secretary of state in 2022. And the first effect was swift: the new SoS announced within his first day that Alabama would be quitting a national consortium to help update voter rolls.https://t.co/484URhFOBr— Taniel (@Taniel) January 18, 2023

@Origuy: What a example of PJ O’Rouke’s maxim, “The Republicans are the party that says government doesn’t work and then they get elected and prove it.”

@sanjeevs: I knew nothing about New Zealand politics before Covid and Jardern’s leadership in steering NZ through the pandemic. It will be interesting to see what she does next.

Another NC power station was hit by gunfire. Fortunately no outages.

Also, a good short video explaining what happened in the prior NC power stations attack. The resulting outages in  Moore County were because of the design of the power network, which lacked redundancy.

@sanjeevs: Wow, that’s surprising. Though I suspect NZ won’t go down the crazy train track with their next PM, so there’s that.

I really like her whenever I watch her in an interview.

@lgerard: His defrauding of a Vet and the resulting death of a service dog because if it, made the national news tonight. I can only hope the consequences of that reveal matches the crime.

      @TaMara: Hope not.

But the main opposition party – National, seems to have been pretty heavily penetrated by the Chinese in the past.

Yang Jiang was a very important fundraiser for them.
