Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

The new republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Let me file that under fuck it.

Pelosi: “He either is stupid, or he thinks the rest of us are.” Why not both?

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Innocent people don’t delay justice.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” is supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

Can we lighten up on the doomsday scenarios?

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

Trump’s legal defense is going to be a dumpster fire inside a clown car on a derailing train.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

The revolution will be supervised.

Spilling the end game before they can coat it in frankl luntz-approved dogwhistles.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

Absent Friends: Last Thoughts on David Crosby

From a much longer thread:

1. My 1st thought abt David Crosby is to exploit the moment & tell you to check out his last 5 solo albums, starting with "Croz" in 2014; then "Lighthouse" in '16, "Sky Trails" in '17, "Here If You Listen" in '18 and "For Free" in '21.

I think he'd want those hyped. pic.twitter.com/iwCbVRPB2f

— John Fugelsang (@JohnFugelsang) January 20, 2023

2. Also, everybody needs to see @ajeaton's excellent documentary “Remember My Name” produced by @CameronCrowe.

It’s all of the beauty & chaos of David with blunt honesty & bravura filmmaking. It's be worth watching for the animated sequence where he’s fired from The Byrds. pic.twitter.com/jWZGdju72q

— John Fugelsang (@JohnFugelsang) January 20, 2023

8. He didn’t sing, but he was so brilliant and hilarious the crowd was enthralled. I begged him to do a spoken word tour.

He was wonderful and went home w/my wife’s vape pen, which she considered a tremendous honor. pic.twitter.com/adIU9RySBA

That Cavett Show is awesome. The Airplane closed it and Dick had to jump in front of the camera and sign off!

Grew up with his music. The first really big concert I went to was the CSN comeback tour stop in Philadelphia. Their new stuff wasn’t… all that. But they mostly did their classic stuff, and it still was.

I don’t share DC’s disdain for The Doors.

But David Crosby had  decent measure of humility and empathy often lacking with the super successful.  He lived a big life with that gifted voice.

@raven: Cavett has great segments and entire shows on his YouTube channel.  Like this rare one with Jimi taking about the 101st (link)

    @karen marie:

I don’t know, should I be?  It’s a tribute thread and I hate when people gather to specifically share positive thoughts only to have someone show up to poop in the punch bowl.

    “I loved Hamilton!”

    “OMG, Hamilton was so boring!”

DC would not appear on my list of the 100 greatest performers. I never met him and so cannot truly comment on his character.  Was he a wholly shitty person sans talent?

Joni Mitchell looks so young.  Geez, did she start performing at 12 years old?  Or is everyone looking younger because I am getting older?

@David ⛄ 🎅The Establishment🎄 🦌 🕎 Koch: I remember watching that at the time.  I was in high school and Cavett came on in the afternoon about when school was out.  I  told people for years after about Hendrix being a paratrooper and a veteran and nobody would believe me.

@West of the Rockies: You made a claim about him that’s just wildly untrue.

I’ll know going forward — now that you’ve explained it — to check your and Raven’s comments so I don’t make the mistake of disagreeing with something either of you say.

I’m starting to understand the conversation here the other day that people are deciding there are other places where their time is better spent.

    @David ⛄ 🎅The Establishment🎄 🦌 🕎 Koch:

House next door to us is where Cavett grew up into his early teens. My now deceased friend & Neighbor Glenn bought it from his parents in the 1950s. Big tree in front yard (now falling apart) planted by Dick as a child.

Like Adam Lang my first large concert was on that 70s tour in Chicago. My tastes changed to other things over the years. But I sort of like his old man persona. And about Jim Morrison I kind of see the axe Crosby was grinding, even if Patti Smith’s judgement warns me not to be so harsh.

Songs this man wrote and sang permeate memories from my late teens and early twenties. I am grateful for those words and notes and the rest is dross.
