Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Bark louder, little dog.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

This blog will pay for itself.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

This fight is for everything.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

The willow is too close to the house.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

I really should read my own blog.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

This should be a ‘Jewish issue’ too
Yet this latest bill strikes at the very core of Judaism’s commandment to learn from history. It’s not just about the Holocaust. Every year during Passover, we contemplate what it means to have been slaves and are literally commanded to experience the holiday as if we are in Egypt ourselves— and then learn from it how to treat others.

This isn’t just about sympathizing with another group. Within the Jewish community, we have members who are Black and multiracial. Teaching about African American history and culture involves teaching about the history of African American Jews, and for that reason alone, we should see it as a Jewish issue.

DeSantis’ strategy isn’t new. Throughout history, those bent on inflaming racial and ethnic tensions, or those who simply wanted to use an easy scapegoat, have tried to limit how we talk about the past.

    …

I agree.  He doesn’t like women in power.  He finds them emasculating.  Notice the body language when he was around Pelosi.

My guess is that he will pick some MAGA Black man because his poisoned brain will think that he only needs to peel off some of the Black vote to win back GA, MI, PA, and WI.  That is why he pushed so hard for Hershel Walker in GA.

Sorry, not interested in postcards.  Now if they can print a calendar that begins in February, I would buy it.  I seem to remember that a different vendor means that they can’t give so much money to the pets (can’t think of the name) but if they can’t sell any calendars at all…..  even less money.

I think if he can be persuaded to put a woman in that position, Nikki Haley is better fit for his notions about “central casting”, and she’s pretty successfully sucked up over the years, as opposed to Stefanik, who I’ve read he doesn’t trust. @pat: If we want to a company other than Cafe Press, we wouldn’t be able to have the funds raised go directly to the pet charity.

On the other hand, Cafe Press using another vendor for paper has no impact on that at all.

We still plan to do the calendar through Cafe Press – whenever they get the paper!  Maybe they will offer different starting dates but either way, we will offer the calendar that we already put together and designed.

Our hope is that BJ peeps will want to buy one anyway to see everybody’s wonderful pets and to support the pet charity.

But in the interim, some folks were interested in postcards, and we got quite a few high resolution photos for the “Favorite Dogs & Cats” posts, so I think we have some good options for photos to put on postcards.

I have seen people claim that this reveals exactly where the leaks are coming from — the Johnson camp, tearing down the new government and getting some revenge against those who turned on him.

Though extreme, this is at least plausible. More so anyway than the claim that the damage being caused by Sunak, Braverman, Zahawi, Kwarteng, and others is part of some long-planned revenge on Britain by the former colonies.

    @Ken:

I have seen people claim that this reveals exactly where the leaks are coming from — the Johnson camp, tearing down the new government and getting some revenge against those who turned on him.

There is a Tory Civil War happening. There are definitely Johnson supporters trying to bring him back, claiming that he could easily win a general election. Problem is, this ain’t true. In addition, Johnson still has some looming investigations that might see him ousted as an MP. And the scandals torching Sunak keep coming back to former Johnson people.

Sunak is a weak political leader. He keeps doing silly things that make him an easy target. He recently got fined for not wearing a seatbelt. Jeez!

Tory extremists believe that Sunak is not sufficiently committed to BREXIT. But moderate Conservatives know that right now, there is no plausible replacement for Sunak.

    @CaseyL:

Wait, what? Last I heard, it was Raab in the crosshairs.

Raab is sitting pretty compared to Braverman and some others.

Sunak is getting some heat for not paying taxes, but that’s hardly the sort of thing the Tories will do a No Confidence vote over (since hardly any of them pay taxes either).

Looking ahead to a general election, Sunak is a loser to people who believe that a rich person cannot, by definition, understand the problems of a common man. Of course, this comes from a people long ruled by elites and aristocrats.

A former chancellor is getting heat for not reporting income and not paying capital gains taxes. I think this guy previously took some heat for claiming expenses on his horse stables.

Most of these people were appointed to government by Johnson. The press previously covered for many of them. But now that Sunak is in office, the media is suddenly finding all these scandals they never noticed before.

I got a link to this article in my daily e-mail from WEF, an industry group I belong to. It looks like a back door attempt by the Mississippi state government to take over the water system in Jackson.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Jackson’s troubled water system could get a new set of owners under legislation advanced Tuesday by Republican lawmakers in Mississippi.
The bill would transfer ownership to a new public entity overseen by a nine-member board, the majority of which would be appointed by state leaders. Republicans control both houses of the Mississippi Legislature, as well as the governor’s mansion. Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, a Democrat, has said he wants the city to maintain control of its water.

Most of the board members would be appointed by the (white) governor and (white)lt. governor, and all would be subject to approval by the (mostly white) MS state legislature. If they get this done I look for them to sell the system to a private company within months of taking it over, because that’s what they’ve been pressuring the city government to do for a long time.

@karen marie: Israel has a parliamentary system, and proportional representation. Parties run nationwide, and if a party wins 10% of the vote it the top 12 people on the party slate are elected to the 120 member Knesset.

The kicker this time was that a party must clear a 3.25% threshold. If it doesn’t, instead of getting 4 MKs it wins none. That was a critical factor in November’s election. Two parties in the anti-Netanyahu bloc failed to clear the threshold, one by a tenth of a percent and one by 4 tenths.

So even though the pro-Netanyahu and anti-Netanyahu blocs were virtually tied in the popular vote, 6% of the votes were were wasted and Netanyahu’s 4-party coalition ended up with a 64-56 majority.

Rick Scott sure fits the “lean and hungry” type. He’s got this extreme diet where he lives off of scrambled egg whites and grilled fish. Scott looks like he has something like 1% body fat.

He actually looks a little scary.

@Geminid: @Cameron: I’d say between that becoming filthy rich by running a company that was convicted of felony medicare fraud (of which he somehow was not guilty, which I will never understand) he was doomed, but he won statewide in Florida three times, and pretty handily I believe, so who the fuck knows? Though I would still bet that, barring a trump resurgence, they’re gonna go with a smiley face to front for trumpism

Speaking of Florida politics, you know who else got rich on, or at least very near, Medicare scams? Papa Gaetz

Shortly after receiving his Master’s degree, Gaetz worked in Jacksonville as a hospital administrator, and lobbied the legislature to create hospice care programs for the dying. In 1983, Gaetz founded VITAS Healthcare Corporation with a group of investors, which he later sold for nearly half a billion dollars in 2004.[2]

n 2013, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against VITAS for allegedly committing Medicare fraud since 2002, when Gaetz still worked at the company. Gaetz denied any role in any wrongdoing that occurred.[17] The case was settled in January 2018 with a confidential settlement.[18]

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Well, some asshole’s going to win that nomination, so I’m not counting Scott out. If he does win, Democrats are going to spend a lot of money telling the Medicare story.

Just because it did not get traction in statewide races doesn’t mean it won’t in a national race, with $100 million in ads propagating it. Scott may think his electoral success in Florida immunized him on this issue, but I don’t think so.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Scott won his Governor elections by 60,000 and 66,000 out of 5.5 million votes cast. His Senate election was much closer.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: It certainly was a big shift. One factor may be that Trump was not on the ballot. When I look at the change in Virginia from Biden winning by 10 points in 2020 to Youngkin winning by 2 in 2021, I see several factors at play and one was the absence of Trump from the 2021 ballot. Democrats and candid Republicans agreed that he had been a potent GOTV force for Virginia Democrats.

But there are apparently also demographic changes that have turned Florida redder. Plus, DeSantis had a lot of money, I believe $200 million. That has to make a difference in such a spread out state with expensive media markets.

I think Boebert has a chance to be picked VP. You have to be “in” with the QAnon crowd to get anywhere in the GOP, and she locks up the gun-nut vote, which is a major constituency in the Party. And she doesn’t have to pretend to be crazy; she really is. These are all positives to the GOP base.

Boebart for VP? She gives off the same vibes as Sarah Palin. Palin turned off many Republican voters. But these are different times.
