Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

White supremacy is terrorism.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Consistently wrong since 2002

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

We still have time to mess this up!

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Everybody saw this coming.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

This fight is for everything.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Republicans don’t trust women.

On The Road – BigJimSlade – Hiking in the Alps, Chamonix and Grindelwald 2022

BigJimSlade

Last summer my wife and I flew in/out of Geneva to go hiking in the alps :-)  From the airport we caught a bus to Chamonix. On my trip to Europe in 1989, I made a side trip the Chamonix for a couple days and remember very little of it. It snowed big, fat, wet snowflakes. It was gray the whole time. Couldn’t see the mountains. I know I did a couple hour day hike, but I have no idea where exactly at this point. So it was going to be fun to go back!

Then we headed off to Switzerland for a few days in Grindelwald, hiking around, plus a side trip to Lauterbrunnen, before spending a night in Geneva before the flight back.

OK, let’s check out Chamonix, home of the fantastical, gondola-serviced Aiguille du Midi, and Mt. Blanc.

When we returned home, I checked my photos to see what I had of Chamonix and it turns out I had a picture of the hotel we stayed at on this trip – Le Croix Blanche! (tr: The White Cross) I made these 2 pictures into one with the picture from 1989 on the left, and from last summer on the right. Entertainment Open Thread: Happy Birthday, Mr. Hackman!

Happy 93rd to Gene Hackman, who was told by everybody he didn't have what it takes to be an actor, was given the lowest score ever by the Pasadena actors studio, worked as a doorman, didn't get his first film role until his mid-30s and didn't become a leading man until his 40s. pic.twitter.com/RGp8Imbw09

— Christopher Lloyd (@ChristopheLloyd) January 30, 2023

An inspiration to all of us late bloomers, and a damned good actor!

GENE HACKMAN may have retired from acting 20yrs ago but this pic from May of last year shows he’s very much alive & well aged 92 down in New Mexico.

He goes bike riding every day, is active and engaged with hobbies & friends and is thoroughly enjoying his golden years. pic.twitter.com/UT1ptESFG5

— Michael Warburton (@MichaelWarbur17) January 30, 2023

There’s something for every taste in Hackman’s vast filmography — he always gave the word ‘workmanlike’ a good reading, no matter whether the current project was a high-end star project or a quickie throwaway. His ‘best’ film, in my opinion, would be The Conversation, though there’s probably half a dozen other contenders.

My favorite Hackman movies, however, are Enemy of the State and a mostly-forgotten midranger thriller from 1985, Target. Both of which allow Hackman, as a second-in-the-trailer supporting role, to expand his gifts as a quiet, unpretentious ‘normie’ who just happens to be much more than that. Target, in particular, has a memorable scene where Genial Fish-Out-of-Water Midwestern Tourist suddenly morphs into Killer Alphabet-Agency Rottweiler… while his disbelieving ‘ugh, my boring dad’ son (Matt Dillon, at his most posterboy-ish) looks on agape…

Which Hackman films would get your vote(s)?

War for Ukraine Day 340: Just a Brief Update Tonight

by Adam L Silverman|  January 30, 20236:18 pm| 101 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

It’s been a very, very, very, very long day. I’m fried. So this will be a brief update.

I do want to start with one correction from last night. One of the news reports I excerpted and referenced in regards to Erdogan’s position regarding Sweden’s ascension to NATO referenced F-16s. One of you all in comments pointed out that should be F-35s. My understanding is that we took the F-35s off the table when Erdogan decided to buy the S-400 surface to air missile system from Russia. Regardless, he wants US fighter jets, so if its F-35s, then I apologize for the error last night.

Also, my shirt from St. Javelin arrived. I’ll have to take some pics of it and the hockey jersey and post them. Anyhow, and again, if any of you all are Fellas and would be willing to reach out to the forgers for me, shoot me an email. I’ve made several purchases from St. Javelin and since I don’t have a Twitter account and therefore don’t tweet, I have no way of reaching out myself. Thanks in advance!

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump:

Monday Evening Open Thread: Enough With the F*cking Secret Memos Already

Enough with the fucking secret memos already: https://t.co/j59zJtzGHA

— Defector (@DefectorMedia) January 27, 2023

The media’s already bored with the existing revelations, but I have a feeling there will be more surprises as the (sigh) 2024 primaries heat up. Justin Ellis, at Defector:

We are a petty and venal and lazy species on balance, and there is no distance the human mind can’t quickly traverse to convince itself that something you want won’t be missed. In this calculus, the most important factor is opportunity, and what better window is there than when you leave your job?

There is, of course, some difference between letting a pair of Skechers fall in your lap on the way out the door from Foot Locker, and, say, snagging that memo listing Kim Jong-un’s favorite episodes of Rick and Morty after you’ve run out the clock on your time in the Oval Office.

With the revelation that Joe Biden, as well as Donald Trump, had classified documents stuffed away in their homes, the keepers of the nation’s collective memory are growing worried that former presidents are hoarding stacks of sensitive files in their mud rooms or junk drawers…

The whole mess was made worse this week when Mike Pence signaled that he, too, had “inadvertently boxed and transported” classified papers back to his suburban manse in Indiana. Now everybody that held office as far back as the Reagan administration is on notice. (Jimmy Carter is exempt from tearing up his attic; the Presidential Records Act went into effect after he left office.)…

Context matters here. Trump used the Secret Service to rack up tabs at his namesake hotels. He is also the man whose protracted tantrum after losing the election gave way to an insurrection on the U.S. Capitol. Whether Trump was looking to use the files to cut deals with dictators or create a shadow box, he filled his suitcase with state secrets, however important or banal they might be, while displaying the same level of forethought generally associated with stealing a commemorative mug from Hooters. This is typically dumb, and potentially dangerous, but it is also another signal that the many veils of security clearance placed around aspects of doing the public’s business have gotten way out of hand…

Typically it takes an Edward Snowden or Chelsea Manning to remind the public of the sinister campaigns that the government conducts behind the classified lines of a memo. But beyond special favors to allies, the usual greed mongering, and ill-conceived foreign combat fantasies, the government puts entirely too much shit in the Top Secret bucket. As Elizabeth Goitein, who studied national security at the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University, told NBC News: “You have 50 million classification decisions each year—90 percent of which are probably unnecessary. That’s a lot of rules that have to be complied with every hour of every day. And some of that is going to slip.”

Enough with the fucking memos already.

Fun Facts

He’s hired more lawyers because they’re getting disbarred every week, thanks to him.

He is also trailing in the polls by 12 points to a player to be named later.

— Jack E. Smith ⚖️ (@7Veritas4) January 30, 2023

He processes the world like a petulant child.

His understanding of historical figures is from TV shows and movies.

If we were only indicting his intellect, he’s end up in a juvenile detention center.

— Jack E. Smith ⚖️ (@7Veritas4) January 30, 2023

I was thinking about all the interesting things I learned on the podcast Jack yesterday, and I thought it might be fun to have a thread where we could all share interesting stuff we have learned in the past few days from reading, or videos, conversations, or podcasts.

I thought I might call it Fun Facts to Know and Tell, and then I wondered about the origin of that particular phrase, so I googled.

This is the first thing that Google told me:

  • It is impossible for most people to lick their own elbow.
  • A crocodile cannot stick its tongue out.
  • A shrimp’s heart is in its head
  • It is physically impossible for pigs to look up into the sky.

Not exactly what I had in mind!

I was very pleased to hear Andrew McCabe speak so candidly about Durham and Billy Barr, using the phrase “ginned up” multiple times, with the word “corrupt” peppered in that conversation, too.  He also mentioned that he doesn’t believe that the Trump financial crime, as reported by the Italians, fits under Jack Smith’s remit as Special Counsel.  They also wondered on the podcast, and I wonder, too, why the DOJ, who has likely known about that for quite some time has not fired Durham fore cause.
