Election returns should be coming in over the next hour or so, and Voces thinks we can expect to know the results of the Supreme Court primary by 10 pm Eastern Time!
Mousebumples sent me this link: Wisconsin Spring Primary Live Blog
Wisconsin Supreme Court General Election
Polls in Wisconsin close at 8pm tonight for the Spring Election Primary. Results could be 2 liberal judges on the ballot, 2 conservative judges on the ballot, or one of each on the ballot. The two conservative judges have been attacking one another. The Democrats have not. (Dems in Array. Again!)
In coordination with Voces, Balloon Juice and an Indivisible group wrote more than 1,500 postcards asking voters to get out and vote and to support a liberal candidate in the primary. 400 of those were written by an Indivisible group in Ohio! So if you have an Indivisible group that writes, or you are part of some other postcard-writing group, we would love to get them involved in this effort for Voces.
Why the Upcoming State Senate Race (SD-8) Matters in Wisconsin
The other big race is for the newly open seat in the State Senate’s 8th District (SD-8).
There are 100 Latino and 1,000 African-American households in that district, and we would like to send a postcard to each of them.
Republican Alberta Darling retired after the fall elections last year. She represented the 8th Senate District for nearly 30 years, and was first elected to serve in the Wisconsin State Legislature in a special election for Assembly in 1990.
This race also became especially important after the midterms, which saw Republicans come up just short of gaining a full two-thirds supermajority in both houses of the legislature, which could potentially open the door to some pretty egregious nonsense from Republicans.
Flipping this seat will be an uphill battle for Democrats. But there is reason to believe this is a winnable race.
Jodi Habush Sinykin is the lone Democrat running in this race and she seems to be a very strong candidate. She’s an attorney who has specialized in environmental law, particularly on water issues (she was part of the group that sued over Foxconn’s planned diversion of Great Lakes water). She and her husband own a textile manufacturing company based in Janesville.
She’s already gained endorsements from Sen. Tammy Baldwin, Attorney General Josh Kaul, and a host of organizations, including unions, environmental organizations, and abortion rights groups. She’s also the daughter of Bob Habush of Habush, Habush & Rottier fame. Which means nothing to me, but I’ll bet it means a lot in Wisconsin!
Although Republicans gave themselves an easier path to hold this seat through gerrymandering the district, the ingredients are there for the Democrat to pull off an upset and deliver a real blow to the state GOP as their wall of red continues to crumble.
Writing Postcards
We plan to write more postcards for both of these races in the April 4 election, and if anyone wants to start writing postcards tonight, we have suggested messaging.
First date to mail postcards is 3/10, but even while we’re waiting for results tonight, anyone can start writing the postcards now for the 1,100 households in SD-8.
Who is up for writing?
Request postcard addresses by email from WaterGirl (my nym at balloon-juice.com) and include 1) your nym, 2) # of addresses, and 3) which race the addresses are for (SD-8 or WI Supreme Court)
Some of the addresses in this district can look crazy – they are based on a grid system and can get long and complex. Please include all of the letters and numbers (e.g. N1234 W5678 Main St.) to make sure the postcard reaches its destination.
Key points for SD-8 postcards.
Must include:
Support Democrat Jodi Habush Sinykin for Wisconsin State Senate.
Election day is April 4, and early voting starts March 21.Include one or both of these:
She is a coalition builder and community advocate.
Privacy matters, and Jodi stands against political interference in personal decisions.Optional:
Visit MYVOTE.WI.GOV to find where and when to vote.
Open thread.

Good to know.

Anecdata, but light turnout local to me. I’m usually in the mid-700s when I hit my precinct after work. I was number 271 tonight. Not sure what that implies, but hopefully it’s discouraged Republicans and we can advance both Dems to April’s ballot.

Fingers and paws crossed here!

Thanks for this, WaterGirl! I’ve had a long day (up extra early due to needing to drive across the state for a meeting at 8am), but I’ll be around for at least a little bit if there are questions at all.
Due to said meeting, I voted by mail, so I don’t know what turnout was like at my precinct.

Elizabelle
@Mousebumples: I think you are expecting a major snowstorm or two in the next day or so, too?
WaterGirl
@Gravenstone: I read one story that said the youngs were turning out, at least at one location.
WaterGirl
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Great news!
She was expected to win, but of course until anyone votes, it’s pure speculation.
That is a lovely margin!
Mousebumples
@Elizabelle: The snow has started and will fall through Thursday am. Some parts of the state may get over a foot!
I am just glad my work meeting wrapped by 230,so I could get home before that started. I was not looking forward to a 2 hour drive ballooning to 3-6 hours…
StringOnAStick
I’ll be interested in writing postcards, but life will preclude my starting on that until Friday afternoon. The rest of this week is going to be exhausting. Happy to hear the D victory in VA and I hope the results from today’s judge primary are exactly what we want. WI should not have so many R’s in office, and breaking the reactionary stranglehold on the state supreme court will help.
Gravenstone
@Elizabelle: Incoming now, with the heaviest hitting tomorrow. Fun times abound!
WaterGirl
As long as we are talking about (hopefully) flipping the WI Supreme Court seat, this is interesting.

@Elizabelle: A veritable buffet of winter weathers in WI (and MN), with multiple watches and warnings. My BF was going to fly to Madison tomorrow from CO, but changed to Thurs evening, and that seems like a good choice!
Elizabelle
@Gravenstone: Wishing you and all our midwest peeps safety in this storm.
@Mousebumples: Hope you and the kiddos get some quality playtime in the snow.
We’re expecting 80 degrees in central VA on Thursday! Then back to freezing Friday night.
WaterGirl
@StringOnAStick: Friday is fine!
Just send me email when you are ready for addresses. Include your nym, the # of addresses, and whether you want to write for Wisconsin Senate District 8 or the Supreme Court seat.
Elizabelle
@RaflW: Yeah. I think people looked at Southwest’s meltdown and thought “not gonna chance it.” None of the airlines have redundant capacity.
For this storm, weather is weather.
StringOnAStick
@WaterGirl: Water is about to become an existential crisis in AZ because of the Colorado river and drought; she’s smart to get out front on that issue before the R’s set the framing.
WaterGirl
@StringOnAStick: I don’t think it’s at all likely, but I am hoping against hope that with the two conservative judges attacking one another, maybe there’s a slim chance that the good guys could come in first and second.
I think Janet P. is going to run away with it (in the primary).
But really, I’ll be very relieved to KNOW that we have a liberal judge on the ballot.
WaterGirl
@StringOnAStick: I’d like us to set the framing everywhere, please. :-)
You might want to change AS to AZ?You beat me to it! How come the typos only become apparently after we post the comments?WaterGirl
Wow!
StringOnAStick
@WaterGirl: I’m hoping the two liberals come in first and second too, and I really hope that the two R candidates fatally wounded each other.
I’ll get in touch Friday for addresses.
RaflW
@Mousebumples: A friend posted that he was #821 at 230pm at his polling place in the City of Whitewater, WI. It’s a UW college town, and while the counties that it is bisected by red, the city is decently Dem.
WaterGirl
@WaterGirl: I would love to see the breakdown in spending by candidate.
WaterGirl
@StringOnAStick: I don’t think both Dems will make it to the General, but I will be thrilled if they do!
The live blogger isn’t blogging yet, but I think the polls don’t close for another 5 minutes.

@RaflW: Wondered if you were getting snow. In Seattle we’re expecting 22° Wednesday. Looks like we’ll be losing the Dahlias, Cannas, and Angel’s Trumpets. Some years we have no freezing or frost. Time to order replacements.
WaterGirl
Mousebumples, or anyone from Wisconsin, if you’re here… can you further explain why we think there’s a decent chance of winning the SD-8 seat even though that typically has gone to Republicans?
Mousebumples
@Elizabelle: Thanks! The baby is less a fan of cold, but the 3 year old may enjoy some sledding, if the snow isn’t too deep. ❄️🤩
Jackie
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Expected, as it’s a solid Blue district, but WONDERFUL NEWS! Does this win chip away from McCarthy’s thin majority?
WaterGirl
@Jackie: It does. But lots of people have already been counting that as one of ours when they talk about the slim margin in the House.
But it’s great to have it FOR REAL, because that’s all that counts.
Mousebumples
@WaterGirl: I can try. It’s late, so I’ll probably do a bullet point list, haha.
The GOP candidate also matters. But there are some real nutters in their primary field, and the looniest one might win the primary since independents probably won’t vote.
Right now, I’d say we’re the underdog, but I would have said that about some races that were won in November too. Gotta put the work in, and try to get a Democrat running as an incumbent next time!
Princess
Big turnout in Dane county I hear (Madison).
WaterGirl
222 – 213 (as of tonight)
221 – 214
220 – 215
219 – 216
218 – 217
217 – 218
We would need to flip 5 more to change the balance of power.
WaterGirl
@Princess: That’s one of the counties we wrote postcards for.
Mousebumples
Polls have closed, except –
That’s in Dane County, I believe
ETA – Apparently there was a disturbance and they had to close and reopen elsewhere.

Just corresponded with college friends who are academics in Madison. Both said turnout looked good. I am cautiously optimistic that Janet Kvzwtrprtzywz will win big (I may have misspelled her name), and that Republican turnout is a bit depressed because of the infighting and general charisma-free candidates on the right.

Speaking of snow, one of my cocker spaniels loved snow SO MUCH.
He would wake me up at 3 am and I would wonder why, because he almost never did that. Sure enough, we would get to the door and it would be snowing. And my bedroom has windows that are very high up, so he couldn’t have seen that it was snowing.
He just knew. My happy boy.
RaflW
@WaterGirl: Just read that R.I.’s Rep. Cicilline is stepping down in late spring or early summer.
R.I. law apparently doesn’t let the governor set a new election date till the resignation has actually taken effect. And that the law is murky about how long after the resignation the election be held (beyond ‘first Tuesday after the first Monday of a new month” verbiage). At least R.I.s governor is a Dem so hopefully he’ll game out what is likely best for a good Dem result?
WaterGirl

The key to me is the total of the two liberals versus the total of the two reactionaries. I know longer use the word “conservative” to describe and Republican and considering the current judges on the WI SC, reactionary is a more appropriate word.
And I see Janet P has over 50%.
Mousebumples
@RaflW: I think they’re already there. They were not supposed to have to fight to replace the retiring conservative justice. Its not fair! /whiny Republican voice 😉

@eclare: The vote count is going up every time I look at the site.
Dane County has 62% reported; and Waukesha (a GOP stronghold) as 64% reported as of now. Most of the other counties are 80-95% done.

WaterGirl
@BlueGuitarist: @Omnes Omnibus: @Mousebumples:
Is this the candidate that would be harder to beat, or easier?
Jackie
@WaterGirl: LOVE IT! And the replies are perfect!😂🤣😂
Mousebumples
@CaseyL: Hard to say. Might be a lot of absentees that they need to account for. Could be people still in line at 8pm meant they didn’t “close” on time. Some counties might also wait for all precincts to report and then give just the one number. If I remember, I can ask my dad later as he’s a poll worker. (he used to be the only Dem poll worker at his Washington Co precinct, though I’m not sure if that’s still true)
@BlueGuitarist: haha, not a surprise, and agreed. Actual loons are great. Just not the political loons.
@Jojo: Yup. I think WisDems did some pseudo “campaigning” for her – talk about why she’s radical so primary voters support her.
RaflW
@japa21: That would be a very nice enthusiasm gap. Hope it holds!
And of course I hope the two kinda-even GOP candidates just can’t find a way to kiss and make up. My hope is that the non-Uihlein one squeaks it out, and that those bloated corrupt fookers sit the general election out.

Up for writing postcards!
Hoping to write at same time for both state Senate district and WI Supreme Court.
state senate district is gerrymandered, but as Mousebumples said, it will be about turnout.
NH state House of Representatives runoff, Strafford 8:
in Nov 970-970
today D (Grassie) 568-R 451

But turnout is still key!

Mousebumples
@BlueGuitarist: I’ll defer to WaterGirl, but I think the concern about combo postcards is that one (SC) is officially non partisan and could confuse messaging. 🤷♀️
And thanks for sharing that runoff news! 🙌🙌
japa21
Kelly has almost caught up with Dorrow. Will she support him if he wins?
CaseyL
Kelly has just overtaken Dorow.
mvr
@Mousebumples:
If the postcards go to D voters just emphasize the right nonpartisan candidate and they will be able to use party affiliation to pick whom to vote for in the other race. The big thing is to get them to vote and to help them remember which “nonpartisan” is OK.

In election related news, this is great. Felon re-enfranchisement has a measurable impact on people’s ability to reintegrate into society. There’s no reason other than lingering punitiveness to withold the vote once a person is out of jail/prison (and I am open to the idea of just not taking away the vote at all. But of course prison isn’t ‘corrections’ it’s just punishment).
WaterGirl
@BlueGuitarist: Yay for writing postcards!
Not much space on postcards to write for two different races, and yes, one partisan and one not partisan.
We have 1,100 Latino and African-American addresses in SD-8.
If you got postcards that let you write on the front and back, you could add “Vote Janet P for state supreme court” on the front, and use the other side for the SD-8 race. For those 1,100, it seems most important to focus on SD-8, with Janet P. as a PS.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: I don’t know how to answer that. To people in Ontario, I’m an American. To some people in Quebec they think I’m Jewish because..not sure why but I think some of it is due to me speaking english…in a town where only tourists speak it, or vacationers. But to older Quebecers they are confused because I attempt to speak French and sometimes apologize for my bad French. I think Canadians who are native English speakers (Anglophone), maybe tend not to do that? There’s a lot going on in Canada!
