Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

The willow is too close to the house.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

“I never thought they’d lock HIM up,” sobbed a distraught member of the Lock Her Up Party.

Come on, man.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

T R E 4 5 O N

You can’t love your country only when you win.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Tick tock motherfuckers!

The words do not have to be perfect.

I was promised a recession.

Tuesday Evening Wisconsin Postcard Writing & Music

Is anybody writing postcards tonight?

If anyone wants to get started, we have addresses from Voces for the Wisconsin State Senate seat in SD-8 and for the Wisconsin Supreme Court.   In keeping with our usual focus, we are writing to Latino and African American households for Voces.

If you want addresses, just send email to WaterGirl: my nym at balloon-juice.com – and we’ll get you started!

We also need people who are willing to write postcards in Spanish for the Latino addresses from Voces.  We worked with Voces on the message, which they translated for us.  So you don’t have to know Spanish to write the postcards, you just have to be able (and willing!) to copy the Spanish text.

Other groups are writing postcards, as well, and everyone is welcome to the postcard writing parties!

Mousebumples wondered if maybe folks might like a daytime postcard writing thread on Saturdays, rather than Saturday evenings, so please weigh in on that if you are a postcard writer.

MUSIC

I find this song haunting, in a good way.  It’s been my ear worm all week.

Who else has music to share?

Just got news that our nanny tested positive for Covid tonight. I’m testing now, so I’m torn between hoping my 4 vaccines allowed me to escape covid again, and figuring if we all have Covid already, we don’t need to figure out childcare if she feels up for watching the kids the rest of the week. 😭

I’ll be doing postcards – but might be a bit distracted tonight, so less efficient than usual…

Not entirely music per se but I found the sheepish expression (and the subsequent tentatively triumphant one) on the young guy playing the harness of cowbells in the percussion section most charming.

Link should be cued up to the brief section. If not, it runs from about 45:09 to about 47:05.

Betty Cracker – someone in the Florida Senate filed a bill to cancel the Democratic Party – lol.

    https://www.wesh.com/article/ultimate-cancel-act-florida-democratic-party/43125234#

They called it the “ultimate cancel act” and  “immediately cancel the filings of a political party, to include its registration and approved status as a political party, if the party’s platform has previously advocated for, or been in support of, slavery or involuntary servitude.”

The entire florida GOP party has gone completely off the rocker – I think deSantis also was talking about he will get to control Disney’s content. I suppose when you control all parts of govt and they all obey whatever you say. He’s going to over-step, the entire party is going to over-step.

The free, printable PostCards from the  WI Primary have been upgraded for the General.

This is a page of free designs you can download and print. The ones at the top are, obviously, for Wisconsin.

Apparently, Judge Janet is doing just fine in the money department. This article says she  has reserved 7 million in ads. Not sure how she spends that much in such a short time. But may she triumph. (knock wood)

I’m on my way offline for the evening, but here is a song for you all. By happenstance, I was at this very concert. This song’s “The Freedom Come-All-Ye” by Hamish Henderson, and is in Lowland Scots dialect, sung by Dick Gaughan.

    The 3rd verse begins:

“Sae come aa ye at hame wi freedom
Never heed whit the houdies croak for Doom”

(“Houdies” is probably “hoodie crows”: carrion birds.)

Loosely translated, it’s very à propos for all who drop in here tonight!

“So come all ye at home with freedom
Pay no heed to the birds of doom”

    MUSIC!

I am fizzing with excitement about the new Depeche Mode album coming out in a month. The first single, Ghosts Again, is terrific. (The graveyard scenes in the video are bittersweet, after the death of Andy Fletcher last year.) God damn, do I ever wish I was not homebound and could go see them when they’re on tour. I saw them once many years ago and it was fan-fucking-tastic. My fave band.

    A few more current faves:

Florence + the Machine’s cover of Addicted to Love is delicious.

Chills by Ladyhawke is a freaking bop

If you’re amenable to Kpop, Cherry from ITZY is a fun one

A bit silly, but I’d like to ask fellow Jackals to refer to this coming weekend’s CPAC conference as “Schlapp n Tickle” if they’re on social media and care to comment on the authoritarian-fluffiing horror of that ‘conference’.
