As promised, I finally put together some video of Nick and Trixie: A Love Story (well, at least his love story, still not sure about her). Toward the end you’ll understand why it’s been so difficult to get any video at all of them. The other day, as Trixie came in the house, Nick jumped on the landing, like he was going to follow her inside, then thought better of it. I await the day I have to shoo him back outside.
Regale us with the tales of your furry/feathered/scales family members.
I have a house full of company and am off to see my niece in a band competition. What’s on your calendar today?

Trixie: “Yes, I’m ignoring Nick! He’s a duck, you woke sicko.”
Actually, it’s nice to see animals be fond of one another.
On my calendar today is a local author fair at the Waukonda Public Library, where I will be selling (hopefully!) and signing books along with 11 other local writers.

They need a love song. “Duck lover, where are you with a love oh so true?”

Very cute.

It’s good to see Jasper out there running and playing too. You did good by that one.
Nick & Trixie are adorable together. <3

Trixie appears to touch Nick’s head a couple times.
I can imagine him running back to Nora, shouting “She touched me! She touched me! I’ll never wash my head again!”
And Nora, bless her, sighing and wondering when the crush will end.

Scully was very quiet on the car ride home from the shelter. (My sister drove me.) But it turns out that she can be quite talkative when she wants something. Right now she’s sleeping on the floor by my red Les Paul. She’s a real sweetie.
NotMax
Nada. Playing it by ear.
With luck and if can work up the gumption, contemplating preparing some Instant Pot some mushroom barley soup (with meat).
zhena gogolia
@Amir Khalid: So glad for both of you!
MomSense
@Amir Khalid:
Great name! Glad to hear she is settling in to life with you.
Speaking of names, what did you name the red Les Paul?
CaseyL
@Amir Khalid: I hope you’ll give us some photos 😺
On my agenda today: The whole complex is getting the decks powerwashed. Each townhouse has four decks, including the front porch(es). All have to be cleared of plants, furniture, storage chests, grills, and whatever else is on them. We’re having a Clean Up Party, to help one another do that.
I have one of those fabric folding wagons to unbox and deploy, as the big deck off the living room is my garden. So many plants! And a sofa and table and garden storage chest.
Gonna be fun, for certain dubious values of “fun.”

Reprising this from last night for the morning crew:
The Little Hill Sanctuary (for animals) in California could use some help. They have been buffeted by the recent (and ongoing) bad weather and flooding. Please give a little if you can.

@Amir Khalid: Congratulations on Scully. Cat does not know that she won the lottery. Yet.
Photo, please. With a guitar, perhaps.

@Amir Khalid: She was contemplating her wonderful future. I hope you have many good years together!

Waiting for delivery of a bookcase to replace one that arrived damaged, so probably going to miss my knitting group/brunch gang today. But have errands to run, pictures to hang in the new house, some ukulele practice and some French to review. A busy day for me. I’m still, after 6 years, getting used to life in retirement – almost everything is actually optional, but I’m surprisingly busy.
bookdragon
I’m amazed they can all be in the yard together. My two greyhounds play like Scout and Trixie, though much faster, but put any small chase-able in the yard and they instantly become a hunting pack. (Of course, since I’m allergic to cats, we adopt the ex-racers who are ‘high-prey drive’ and can’t be homed with cats).
It is adorable to see cross-species love. Humans and canines are both good at adopting other species into their ‘packs’. I’m told it’s one of the reasons they began co-operating in hunting and guarding home, when most hunting species would have competed.

@grandmaBear
Standard retort when people ask how what occupies my time since retirement.
“I don’t know but it takes me all day to do it.”

Okay, here’s an anecdote or whatever about my cat, Briery: She absolutely refuses to use a cat bed. I’ve had her a little over two years now, and in that time, I’ve bought I think five different cat beds, all different shapes and styles. With each one, I would try for weeks to put it in different spots in the apartment (on the sofa, on the ottoman, different spots on the floor, etc), and she would ignore it. I’ve tried rubbing her blanket on them to put her scent on it — nada. I’ve tried rubbing catnip on it, since she does love catnip toys — no interest. I tried putting her small toys in the beds so she has to crawl into it to get them, and she either just ignores those toys or manages to yank them out without stepping onto the bed. We’ve had the flat kind with just the little low rim, the deep cushy kind, a heated one, a covered one, something else…always a no go. She just wants to lay on a flat blanket on the sofa or else on some other flat surface — the chair, the ottoman, the floor.
It is so bizarre. She was never a stray, so it’s not like she got used to sleeping on the ground or something. It’s not like it’s a big deal or anything, but it’s just weird.

@Alison Rose:
Have you tried putting her blanket on the bed? I use towels on Pablo’s bed, just to keep the bed a bit cat-hair free.
Sure Lurkalot
@Amir Khalid: Ah…you did get a feline companion! Hope we get to see a picture of the lucky Scully.

@Steeplejack: Done.

My 2 y.o grandaughter won’t stop demanding to “watch movee with ducks and doggies” we’re on like the 10th repeat this morning.
This sentence instantly made me anxious. I’ve been so anti-social this winter, I think I’d throw up if I knew someone was going to stay with me for two days lolol.
Alison Rose
@pat: Yep, and she sniffed at it and then ignored it :P
pat
@Alison Rose: Face it, she doesn’t like cat beds!
Sure Lurkalot
@Alison Rose: Have you tried box tops? One of my dear departed cats loved the box tops I would get at Costco, filled with (her favorite) tissue paper. She had the same disdain for beds as your kitty.
Steeplejack
@Geo Wilcox:
Thanks!
(I have no personal stake, just want to see them get some help.)
Alison Rose
@Sure Lurkalot: Hm, that would be interesting. She has a couple of times gone into empty boxes on their sides.
WaterGirl
@Amir Khalid: Pictures! We need pictures! Can you send some to me?
edit: I think Scully deserves a post of her own.
Chacal Charles Calthrop
@Amir Khalid: congratulations on your new feline overlord
Sister Golden Bear
@Amir Khalid: Congratulations!
Chacal Charles Calthrop
@Alison Rose: sometimes that’s the way they are. I had two cats who wouldn’t use a cat bed; one wouldn’t go near it and the other rubbed her nose all over it, once, just to make sure it smelt like her, slept in it for a day and then ignored it.
Then I got another cat and it’s her favorite place in the apartment.
Alison Rose
@Amir Khalid: YAY KITTY!
Alison Rose
@Chacal Charles Calthrop: Yeah, my previous cat LOVED a big fluffy bed. I remember one time getting a new one because the current one had gotten too scuzzy and gross, and when I put the new bed out, she crawled right in and didn’t leave it for about three hours.

@Amir Khalid: Get used to taking orders from Scully!

In an hour I’m off to shove my head and tools into the very hearts of bushes and start thinning. The universe has arranged a precisely calculated amount of non-rain to linger there to drench me with — any more and I could cry off, any less and I’d be comfortable.

My partner’s 15# orange kitty Wobbles (hind legs) loathed my grey 7# rocket kitty BaBoo when my partner brought him over from the feral cat colony at his rental house. After a year, or has it been two?, they are doing extended zoomies. There’s no yowling or screeching from Wobbles just high speed chasing. Noisy but cool. Cat psychology or psycho kitties?
Going to the bank today. May pay bills. Whee!
Congrats to Amir and Scully, queen to be of the realm!!!

My pup is now getting a little older and has some arthritis in her back so she likes to sit with me by the fire when it’s cold. She keeps my feet warm and I periodically stop knitting to give her some pets. It works for us. She’s crazy about my youngest son’s girlfriend who stays at our house most of the week. It’s so funny how animals, like people, just click with some. She is really talkative with H and it’s very sweet.
I’m really enjoying my grand pets. My middle son and his wife have a sweet doodle who is very knitworthy. He has several sweaters and actually likes wearing them. I’m making a felted wool cat cave for my grand kitty. His name is Trouble, but he’s one of the sweetest kitties ever. He did knock over a house plant that was on the top of a very tall bookcase, but sometimes things break in parkour. It took a little time but my son’s roommate’s cat has finally accepted him and they play and live together peacefully. He takes the tallest perch on the cat tree and she gets the hammock that is lower down.
I do miss having a cat, or being had by a cat, but my dog’s prey drive is too strong. Fortunately I can visit my grand kitty enough to get my feline fix.

Jasper looks great! And loving life!
Nick’s crush on Trixie is adorable🥰 It’s a very entertaining relationship to watch lol

Thank you so much for putting together that video! Not much happening here, raining and 50. Lucy the dog is curled up next to me and snoring, I think she has the right idea.

@MomSense: Kitty parkour…what a perfect description!

All righty!
Got the back deck cleared off, with everything now on the front porch or the lawn, along with everyone else’s stuff. It is amazing how much I have managed to cram onto an 8 x 12 deck – and I get to do it all again, in reverse, in two days when they clean the west-facing decks. (Happily, I don’t have nearly as much on those.)
Got my workout for the day, too :)
Oscar, speaking of kitties, spent the entire time I cleared everything out on his giant doggie bed, watching his Kitty TV. He is truly turning into a couch potato.
Gvg
@Alison Rose: I have never had a cat that used a cat bed, and I have had quite a few. When I was younger, people didn’t buy as many things for pets. I never thought of it, my cats slept on my bed, or the couch or whatever, which if you look them over and feel them, are better built and cushier than most cat beds. Most for sale are meant to be appealing to human eyes and aren’t actually that comfy. Often a cat has a favorite view or perch. I have had a few that liked dog beds which can be better made. The current 4 took over the guest dog bed I stored under my bed. It was a large one, an oval with sides and a low spot for entry and just fit under my bed when the dog wasn’t there. Evidently the littermates thought it made a dandy den and they didn’t like being disturbed. I had to buy another for guest dog.

Hehe, that’s great! And frolicking Great Danes too.

@Amir Khalid: I’m glad she’s finally home with you – she’s been waiting! Here’s to a long and happy companionship.
Cheers,
Scott.

@Amir Khalid: Photographic evidence of your new feline overlord must be furnished post haste good sir! The maths demand it! Or something along those lines.

I just love watching your crew play together. It brings to mind how, when people would ask me why on earth I had two (2!!) Newfies?!, I would tell them just, “they make me laugh every day.” What could be better?
I am happy to share that Gunter the big gray goof, who has been fostering with me since November, is doing really well. In the next couple days he will be done with the last of his meds. The external signs of heartworm are gone. He’ll have another blood test in November, but meantime, he’s pretty much all clear. And boy does he ever have a bad case of canine teenager-hood! I think he never had a chance to act out when he lived in a cage for five years… he’s making up for lost time. But it just makes me laugh, and admire how clever the handsome boy is. Very happiness and smile.

@bookdragon:
We have two big black farm dogs, the smaller girl (65 lbs) has white bib and speckles on her front legs, Big Brother (80+ lbs) is all black with a small blaze down his front.
Big bro is really fond of our elderly mostly black tortie cat, Punkin, who he grooms, licks and nibbles when they are on my bed together. She puts up with it while purring. So cute. She might weigh 10 or 12 pounds, compared to his giant 80 lbs… Cross species affection indeed ~!!~ And we love both of them.
