Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

No one could have predicted…

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

This blog will pay for itself.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

Tuesday Morning Open Thread: Joe Biden Is A Good Man

And a pretty good President, too!

President Obama and I put in place tough requirements on banks to make sure the 2008 crisis wouldn’t happen again.

The last Administration rolled many of them back.

Americans should have confidence that our banking system is safe, and we're taking action to make it stronger. pic.twitter.com/F3hnWl6L8K

— President Biden (@POTUS) March 13, 2023

Summary of Biden remarks on SVB:
– US 'can have confidence' in banks safety
– SVB deposits 'will be there'
– Taxpayers will not cover the 'losses'
– Asking Congress 'to strengthen' regulations
– Rescued bank management fired
– 'We must get the full accounting of what happened'

— Sebastian Smith (@SebastianAFP) March 13, 2023

Wall Street lobbyists and Republicans in Congress are pushing Fed Chair Powell for weak capital requirements at exactly the wrong time. Silicon Valley Bank's collapse underscores the need for strong rules to protect the financial system. Regulators must not buckle to pressure.

— Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) March 10, 2023

Elsewhere:

A McConnell aide says timing at rehab facility could be 1-2 weeks

“That decision will be made by the Leader’s physicians and the therapists. It is very common to undergo physical therapy to regain strength after a hospital stay and this ranges anywhere from a week to two weeks.”

in other news, if anyone dislikes McConnell in here (say it isn’t so) I can promise you he is in all kinds of pain right now. My husband had a “minor rib fracture “ that was so minor it didn’t even show up as a fracture at the time and he was in intense pain for weeks. And no, not everyone has two weeks of rehab after hospitalization. He must be a complete mess. But it’s good to keep the senate GOP headless and uncertain for as long as possible.

President Biden said Monday that former President Carter, who is in hospice care, has asked him to deliver his eulogy when he dies.
“I spent time with Jimmy Carter, and it’s finally caught up with him, but they found a way to keep him going for a lot longer than they anticipated because they found a breakthrough,” Biden said at a Democratic National Committee fundraiser.

It would be easier to sympathize with him if his staff referred to him by his title just once, and after that referred to him in the manner one refers to a human being.

It’s natural to feel sympathy for the plight of a fellow human being, even one that one dislikes.  But ‘the Leader’ comes across as more like a thing than a person.

I see that Rep. Jennifer McClellan, Virginis’s new 4th CD Congresswoman, is assigned to the Armed Services and Science, Space and Technology Committees. The state is heavily involved in national defense matters, and Democrats lost an Armed Services Committee member when Republican Jen Kiggans beat 2nd District Congresswoman Elaine Luria last November.

Ms. Luria has had a low profile since the election, but I am hoping she will seek a rematch with Kiggans next year. Both Luria and Kiggans are retired Navy Lt. Commanders.

It’s raining hard here and predicted to change over to snow sometime in midmorning–this could be our biggest snowstorm of the season, even though it’s going to be above freezing at ground level all day. At least it’ll likely melt quickly when it’s done. My daughter’s school announced they were opening for a half day but gave everyone the option of an excused absence–we took it; no point in messing with this storm when it sounds like it’ll be coming down hard at noon.

I had my checkup scheduled for this morning but the doctor already rescheduled.

      Good for him!

I was amused by his “close to sinful” description of what Florida is doing.  ‘Close’?  As we math geeks would say, it’s within Ɛ of sinful for every Ɛ > 0.

IOW there’s no daylight between ‘sinful’ and what they’re doing.

As the late, great Terry Pratchett said, sin is when you treat people as things, and that’s exactly what’s going on down there.

Good news: being “anti-woke” looks like an unpopular position!  Keep at it, Ron!  Between that and being anti-Ukraine/pro-Putin, you’re helping us lay the groundwork for Dem success in 2024.

MSNBC: DeSantis may believe that most Americans share the right-wing doctrine that America’s white Christian heritage is threatened by learning about history, racial injustice, and systemic racism—or that at least that his own charms will convince them of it. But in fact, he’s out of touch with Americans and American families, and that is the most important thing to know about his presidential aspirations. All that remains is for voters to tell him at the ballot box.

NYT: The venue Mr. DeSantis chose for his statement on a major foreign policy question revealed almost as much as the substance of the statement itself. The statement was broadcast on “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” on Fox News. It was in response to a questionnaire that the host, Mr. Carlson, sent last week to all major prospective Republican presidential candidates, and is tantamount to an acknowledgment by Mr. DeSantis that a candidacy is in the offing.

On Mr. Carlson’s show, Mr. DeSantis separated himself from Republicans who say the problem with Mr. Biden’s Ukraine policy is that he’s not doing enough. Mr. DeSantis made clear he thinks Mr. Biden is doing too much, without a clearly defined objective, and taking actions that risk provoking war between the U.S. and Russia.

I had to go get that rubber stamp and schedule it again for months later.

I guess that also cleared me for my knee surgery which was just a couple of weeks after the colonoscopy.

stumbled across this story yesterday, which includes FL teacher  bullying trans kid
TAMPA — Until her teacher brought up her race, it had been an otherwise unremarkable American government class at Wharton High. One of Melanie Copeland’s parents was Black, the other white. Her teacher, Todd Harvey, wanted to know what she put as her race on government forms. What she should put, he told her, was “mutt.” Melanie struggled to process what was happening. Did her teacher really just call her a dog? She remembers Harvey grinning, while she and other students sat stunned….

With DeSantis jumping on the “Go Woke, Go Broke” bandwagon nonsense maybe the media should workout how much he’s cost the state pension fund over refusing to divest from Russia.

About 9 months ago the investments had reportedly dropped in value from $300 million to $100 million.

@brendancalling: Some improvements have been made to the colonoscopy prep procedure, it has gotten marginally more palatable since my first 18 years ago — they switched prep solutions, at least at my health system.

As several upthread suggested, getting a very early appointment is key. Waiting around for hours, dehydrated and hungry, is awful. But you are a teacher, you are used to waking up very early so this will be doable for you.

Afterwards, you and the person who drive you get to have a lovely brunch while you contemplate that you have just saved your own life.

I know that they are mostly following the logic of “trump loves Putin; therefore, we must (at a minimum) not oppose Putin’s aims” but it still boggles my mind that the Cleek’s Law mentality is THIS strong in the GOP.  I mean, oppose Biden on literally everything else, but supporting Ukraine as it bleeds Russia/Putin dry is a no-brainer.

I have to admit, it was kind of funny to see this piece – where are all of trump’s 2016 opponents, anyway? – in the NYT of all places.

It has a ‘victory lap’/rub-their-noses in it tone that I found HIGHLY appealing.  =)

The relatively small size of the prospective 2024 field of Trump challengers, with several potential candidates dragging their feet on entering the race, may have something to do with the debasing experience of the Republicans who battled him in 2016 and came away with nothing to show for it but insulting sobriquets like Low-Energy Jeb, Lyin’ Ted and Liddle Marco.“I was just wise enough to see it before everybody else, so I didn’t get a nickname,” Mr. Walker said in an interview of his 2016 campaign, which he ended after 71 days with a warning to consolidate behind one candidate or risk nominating Mr. Trump. “I could see the phenomenon that was Donald Trump going into the 2016 election. And it just took others longer to figure that out.”

The Harrisonburg radio station has a lot of agricultural reporting, and today a woman farmer was talking about the importance of diversity- in soil microorganisms. By rotating crops, she hopes their different “exudates” will contribute to strong and diverse soil life.

This lady farmer also raises South Poll cattle on her Rockbridge County farm, says they are a compact breed suited to warm southern pastures. The bass player from the country group Alabama helped develop the breed. South Poll cattle are known for their fertility, longevity and calm disposition.

@Gin & Tonic: Last month, when five House Republicans visited Kyiv right after President Biden did, I noticed that one was freshman Max Miller. He represents a district near Cleveland. I wondered if this was because there are a lot of Ukrainian-Americans in Miller’s district, as well as many others of Eastern European descent.

House Foreign Relations Charman Michael McCaul (TX) led the delegation. They met with President Zelenskyy and reaffirmed their support for his country.

I think a lot of their Republican colleagues are on the fence, though. They won’t have to vote on more aid for a few months, and they may be waiting to see which way the wind blows in that conflict.

@frosty: I’ll drop some hints here that helped me. (My first one was a nightmare, last fall I had my second one and it was as easy as a colonoscopy could be ever be called easy).

      1. For three days before the prep day, follow a strict pre-colonoscopy diet. It’s very bland and extremely low in fiber.  Many clinics post their diets online so you can find one that fits with you.  I found that most doctor’s offices don’t explain this very well.  I found that it is crucial for making the clean-out day easy.  I used the one posted online from Kaiser They have a chart and a nice .pdf you can download, with pictures. The recommendations differ from 2 days to 5 days of this ore-colonoscopy diet. I chose three days.  YMMV.

      2. On the prep day, the prep goes down much easier if  you drink it through through a straw to avoid most of your tastebuds. Plus, get some approved popsicles (no pieces of fruit in them) in the approved color and pop one in your mouth right after drinking each dose of prep. (The popsicle masks the taste). I used Outshine lemon.

      3. Drink plenty of original Gatorade (not the zero sugar kind) in the correct color on the prep day up until you have to stop all liquids. That really seemed to help with dehydration for me.

      Good luck.

ETA:  Sorry about your insurance. There are different brands now. My Doctor was going to prescribe one but my Medicare/part D didn’t pay for it. He prescribed the one that was paid 100%. Your doctor’s office should have checked your insurance first. At least the pharmacy found a way to reduce the cost.

I don’t think it’s so much a matter of Russians being particularly more “religious” than anybody else (probably the opposite) but an issue of Putin having deliberately returned the Orthodox Church to something like the position it had under the Tsars: I.e., providing *official* supernatural sanction to the regime, and reinforcing the notion of “Holy Russia” as a justification for Putin’s war -and/or any other abuses by official agencies.

@Sister Golden Bear: In fairness, the Federal government under both Obama and Biden have tried to take action to protect the rights of LGBT people, in both civil rights and access to health care.  They have been stymied by judicial reversals and then, withdrawal of regulations by Trump.

It’s also worth noting that all women are being actively denied the right to health care of all kinds, especially reproductive health care, but also any non-reproductive health care that might even potentially harm an embryo that hypothetically might exist or might be able to come into existence at any given moment.  We’re like that infamous cover of the New Yorker, but instead of a mass of high rises stretching out over the entire continent, we’re just a giant uterus stretching out to consume our entire person, with tiny limbs and head. All based in the name of a religion that is fast turning into a fertility cult.  LGBT people lose because you don’t have or aren’t willing to give full expression to a uterus.  It’s fucking insane.

In other words, the fight for gender related rights is vast for  just about anyone who isn’t a biologically born cisgender male.

@Matt McIrvin: My provider has switched to using a “split prep”, where one drinks half the night before and half four hours before the procedure.  So, a procedure scheduled before 9am can be very annoying.  I have had the dubious pleasure of getting a colonoscopy every year for the past 25 years, as the first one ended with being scheduled for surgery the next day.  Since then, they haven’t found much of interest in my colon aside from the odd polyp.

However, 10 years ago I did find out what they do if you have what appears to be intestinal bleeding and your colon is clean.  I’ll just say, there’s more than one way into your intestine, and while the pill camera was kind of cool, what they did next was not.

Rib fractures hurt most when one laughs. McConnell is safe from this hazard.

McConnell seems to use his words a lot in place of emotions, so I imagine him saying, “Your sardonic wit would cause me some tension in my Adam and Eve region. Thankfully I remain calm as a butterball turkey forgotten in the freezer after the holidays.”

      @BlueGuitarist:

Had a PE teacher in 7th grade who sounds a lot like that prick. He’d pick up random boys by a hand around their neck so he didn’t have to bend over to yell in their faces. I was waiting for him to do that to me so I could kick him in the junk if he did. I am sure the after effect of that would be worse for me if I did it but also so likely worth it. I’d say that was my worst teacher/human being I’ve ever met. Or at least in the race for worst.

      @jame:

We will need oil for some time to come. Actually we will need petroleum for oil and gasoline and diesel for some time to come. We can use it better than a full sized American pickemuptruck with big wheels and tires that is used as a transportation vehicle rather than a work truck I mean they now get around 15 mpg vs 11-12 a couple decades back. But even without that we will need it. That’s how our transportation network – works. Now I ride the electric transit train across LA on a semi regular basis and it works great. But the only other option is drive my car. Which costs more because gas costs so much here in CA. Costs a lot more to drive actually.

Would it be better if we didn’t burn stuff, after spending a lot of energy to refine it so that we can? Absolutely it would. But that’s where we are and it will take time to replace that with better. The scale of what we are is immense, and changing that takes time. And money. And desire. And not everyone has all of that.

Campos is now deeply concerned that, since the same-sex kiss story obviously cannot be true, it is a confabulation of Biden’s deteriorating mind. Didn’t we go through this with Corn Pop?
