I’m not up to shit, like most evenings. (Well, it’s afternoon here.) But I wanted to search “why do cats have vertical pupils” and when I’d only typed “why” into the bar, the three suggested searches the Safari app gave me were:
Kinda feels like the basis for a true crime podcast.
It had always been a quiet town, with little crime to speak of. But weeks stretched into months with the only eggs to be found costing over ten bucks a dozen. There’s only so far a woman trying to bake birthday cupcakes can be pushed. Rebecca, Michelle, and Veronica were from different walks of life, but they had two things in common: They weren’t interested in going vegan, and they all owned chainsaws.
I’d tune in.

Son #2 is attending a conference on the other side of the Bay Bridge this weekend so we’re going to Oakland to have dinner with him tonight.
What Have The Romans Ever Done for Us?
I’m having a Guinness and some pizza (Detroit style) so the beverage will be Irish but not the food. Watching college basketball all night. May have a Jameson’s Caskmates IPA edition later.

Celebrating with some Buccas cause after all, Patty worked for the Romans.

As I forgot to pick up some Guinness, I will have a Blood and Sand. I picked up some cherry liqueur for another purpose, and realized I now have all the ingredients for one, so why not?

It’s St. Patrick’s Day? I didn’t even notice. I did wear green today without even thinking, but only because I look ok in green. I was thinking maybe a Dark and Stormy. I can drink one of those without getting a migraine. Anyhoo, happy St. Patrick’s day.
WaterGirl
@TheOtherHank: Must not be a live-at-home son. How nice to see him, I’m sure
@Alison Rose: Good one! Also, I have found that a lot of people google how old people are and who they are married too.

@twbrandt: What is a Blood and Sand?

Happy St. Pat’s, y’all!
I don’t drink much anymore, but will raise a glass of fizzy water in celebration.

Going to get 20% off beer. I’m not a beer fan but my partner is. Where the market is there’s quite Thiel restaurant and bar scene so I’ll get to see celebrations. Exciting huh!?
WaterGirl
@Juju: I’m not sure I own anything green. But my kitty litter come-on a St. Patrick’s Day green bag, so there’s that.

Just finished weeding, which is both the cherishing of and removal of green things so I hope that activity will be judged neutral. No shamrocks were harmed, although any nation with the patron of St Shotweed can legitimately contact the UN over my conduct.
Wine to follow because that’s what’s available.

We’re getting ready to haul a corned beef, potatoes and a 1/2 bottle of Bailey’s to a small party up the street. Just not feeling it at the moment so it might be a very early evening.

Taking care of young grandkids age 5, 2 1/2, and 2months, the latter of whim just spit up 2 oz of milk on my wife aka grandma. The older two will conspire to drive grandpa crazy until bath and story time around 7-8 and bed (fir kids) and then grandma & I get to hang out watching netflix until we doze off. Not exactly the kind of St Paddy day we had 3 or 4 decades back.

Another phony reason to drink.

Woke up to kiddo’s excited squeals about the treasure that the leprechaun “dropped” last night when escaping kiddo’s carefully crafted “trap.” This leprechaun trap stuff is apparently quite the thing in the kindergarten set, so I had to scramble to find some chocolate coins in time to play along (bought some Hanukkah gelt off Amazon). We did our corned beef and cabbage thing earlier this week so maybe just a Guinness this evening in honor of the date.
Dan B
@Juju: Equal parts Scotch, Cherry Liquer, Sweet Vermouth, and Orang Juice shaken with ice and strained. Sounds good
I see I’m late.

@johnnybuck: It sounds right to me!

@WaterGirl: He’s attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. So not too far away, but a 40 minute drive is much easier than a 2 and a half hour drive
WaterGirl
@TheOtherHank: 2.5 hours away is still living in another place. A 30-minute drive and dinner will be a treat.

Corned beef and cabbage is on offer at our backyard neighbours, where 10 of us are gathering tonight. We have the best neighbours we’ve ever had and count several couples as friends. Then practicing with my new music partner tomorrow so we can get out harmonies nailed down.

What Have The Romans Ever Done for Us?
@Alison Rose: speaking of cat’s eyes I saw this cat in my neighborhood with mid-grey coat and white accents that has the most startling green eyes.. They’re like two backlit emeralds. Never seen eyes like that on any creature before.

Half-Irish guy from the ancient realm of Bridgeport (on Chicago’s South Side), the onetime home of Irish mayors, precinct captains, city workers and other sons and daughters of Erin. The irony is that Bridgeport ain’t so Irish anymore and is — in fact — represented by an Asian-American on the Chicago City Council. I moved away from the city decades ago, don’t drink and really don’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. I remain, however, a steadfast Chicago White Sox fan, loyal Democrat and (non-practicing) Catholic, among the main tenets of South Side Irish life!

Sipping a Boxing Bear Chocolate Milk Stout, excellent at room temperature. Anticipating the thick, hearty beef barley stew that’s been simmering for the last six hours. Later, because we’re wild, we’ll finish an interesting and challenging jigsaw puzzle.

Watching basketball and eating salmon (I get cravings for the brain food) this evening. Will probably drink Vernor’s. Had been mulling over corned beef and cabbage for weeks, and coincidentally bought some for this weekend. Distantly Irish, hardly obvious; might have a word or two with that dude one day.

This past week, and about three years ago, there were reports of prominent politicos eating iwth improvised utensils or none at all.
Now, anyone who’s been non-affluent enuf to depend on SNAP or ‘food stamps’ knows that you can’t ‘spend’ them on ‘ready-to-eat’ food. Therefore, you’ll find us with a couple of plastic utensils and maybe a paring knife in briefcase or handbag or pocket, ready to consume a container of potato salad or pudding, or convert roll and sixth-pound of bologna into sandwich, with a modicum of dignity.
And I’d consider it a point in a candidate’s favor if they have a staffer who’s been poor, remembers the utility of utensils, and (of course) is willing to share them with their boss and make them look good in time of ‘crisis’.
Should you wish to pass this along to candidate or staffer or consultant, feel free.

This is Scottish rather than Irish, but I’ve been assured that folks in Ireland also like this song and sing it at appropriate occasions. One of the best renditions of “The Parting Glass” that I’ve ever heard, with some amazing a cappella talent from the Face Vocal Band.
When the vocal drums and vocal bagpipes enter halfway through, the song really soars. It’s amazing what the voice can do.

@Dan B:
I dunno, a “Thiel restaurant and bar scene” doesn’t sound that exciting to me.

Cats have vertical pupils because they are nocturnal predators that ambush their prey. Vertical slits enhance depth perception.

Got to finally play some tennis again with my buddy after he was out of commission for several weeks (months?) He suffered a crazy stroke-like even that blinded him in one eye. After lots of consultations, some meds and an injection into his eyeball!! (he said it actually didn’t hurt, due to the topical anesthetic) he’s mostly back to normal with just a small patch of blurriness like after you look into the sun. Really glad since he’s a really great guy and my favorite hitting partner.
Now I’m watching tennis on tv as the corned beef is simmering and smelling good
Also loving the fact that “TrumpIndictment” and “The DOJ” are both trending :)

Took a long lunch at an Irish pub in downtown San Jose. A friend is in a group than plays Irish music there on Tuesday nights; they were playing at lunchtime today. The street in front was closed off and they had food and Irish dancers. I had shepard’s pie and a couple of Smithwick’s. Not a big fan of corned beef.

I’m stuffed full of corned beef, cabbage, and potatoes. And a few Guinness stouts. In a moment of near insanity some time ago, I made a dental appointment for tomorrow at 0745. So instead of staying up until midnight watching basketball and having a few more beverages, I am going to do the FTFNYT crossword puzzle and do some reading.

I forget the movie in which John Mahoney plays the patriarch of a Long Island Irish clan who’s scolding his adult sons for breaking their mother’s heart by not going to Mass.
Son: “Pop, you don’t even believe in god!”
Mahoney: “That’s got nothin to do with being a good Catholic!”
That’s the only thing I remember about the movie.
Getting dinner delivered and going to an Irish pub for dinner tomorrow night. Not being contrarian, that’s just the restaurant we all agreed on, so.
Second generation Irish-American, I’m not too sentimental about it, a lot of my cousins are what I call professional micks, but today one of the Sirius channels was playing all Irish music and it’s got me jonesing to visit the Auld Sod.

I’m Scotch/Irish Italian (to what degree either the Scotch or Irish are I have zero knowledge), the Italian is 50%. Sicilian actually, not sure if that matters.
So drinking is in my background and yet I quit alcohol 20 yrs ago. Mom told me once that they had a party once when I was 3 and I got caught drinking the remains out of all the glasses people set down. She said it was remarkable that I never picked up one with a cig in it. Smart at a young age……. I may have something to sell to anyone that believes that…..

Luncheon was that Irish bacon and cabbage at the pub I mentioned earlier today, with mashed potatoes and parsnip gravy, followed by a slice of rhubarb pie. Two pints of Captain Lawrence Pale Ale (I just never developed a taste for Guinness; I’m told it’s better in Ireland), followed with a shot of Paddy’s Old Irish whiskey to send off two young women to the parade in Manhattan. I need to start running again.
Dinner was Chinese food, followed by Perry Mason.
