On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.

And we’re off – if you look closely, Mürren is across the valley (we walked around there the day before – it’s lovely! But I didn’t take many pictures there.) Embiggen

The national bird of Switzerland appears again. Embiggen

Looking back up the trail at the Eiger Glacier and the Mönch. Embiggen

You don’t always get to choose the angle of your subject – they keep moving and they may not stay very long. Embiggen

Little waterfalls and cascades abounded. Sorry, I didn’t get any cows in this set, but we saw a few. Oh, here, have a cow, man. Embiggen

So, we rushed back to Wengen because we really wanted to take the gondolas back (as opposed to the cog train and/or regular trains) because our pass was expiring, and it’s fun. So even though Wengen was very scenic, we didn’t stop for pictures. We saw a gondola going up a few minutes before we reached town and thought that might be the last one. But, there was one more in 30 minutes or so, so we were in luck. When we got to the top back at Männlichen, we were greeted with a moonrise over the Eiger! Embiggen

Same, but pulling back a bit further. Embiggen

I love this series. The views are stunning, and it’s a part of the world that I have never been to and given my experience at 8k feet in UT, never will.
How long was your trip?
JPL
Your pictures are amazing and thank you for sharing them with us.
RandeB
That part of the hike on the first picture felt more treacherous than it looks in the picture.
Mürren is the place I dream of everytime I chip into the work lotto pool, been there in one winter and another summer and would love seeing if you’d ever get sick of the views.

What a great set of pictures.

It seems there isn’t much snow at the tops of the mountains. Is that normal?
pieceofpeace
I worked in a village in the Alps back in the late 60s, during the winter ski season. But never visited when they weren’t covered in snow and ice. Your pictures are outstanding, thank you.

Love the moonrise – wonderful photos.

I’ll start the rhapsodies about that moon-over-the-Eiger shot! Wonderful!
WaterGirl
These are amazing. Unless I’m mistaken, tomorrow is the last post from this series. Sorry to see it end!
BigJimSlade
@eclare: Glad you like the series! The trip was about 10 days. All of it in the mountains (Chamonix and Grindelwald) except for a last day in Geneva (we flew in and out from there).
BigJimSlade
@RandeB: “would love seeing if you’d ever get sick of the views” sounds like a worthy task!
BigJimSlade
@Tdjr: I’m not really sure what’s normal there now. I’m sure it’s less than it used to be – the glaciers are all retreating.
BigJimSlade
@WaterGirl: Yep, tomorrow’s is the last :-/.
Thanks to everybody for the nice comments!
RandeB
@Tdjr: Was there last summer, many of the waterfalls had already stopped flowing cause all the snow feeding them was already gone. And the higher snowpacks were smaller than usual and melting like crazy.
It was unusually warm/hot to the natives, not as bad as a NYC area summer day but not what the Alps are supposed to be like and all the clothing I had packed for the possible cooler temps went unused

The lavender flower, with bug and without, is Scabiosa. The off white flower is Astrantia. They are readily available in the US and perennial. There are several flowers I can’t identify.
BigJimSlade
@Dan B: Thanks for the flower IDs!

During our 2019 hike I got a shot of all three peaks. Hope I’ve ID’d them correctly.
BigJimSlade
@Mike Mundy: Hey, that’s really nice! Yes, you got them right. I guess if I start a blog, I won’t call it mikereport! (My real name is Mike. Oh, I know! I could add “the” in front, lol.) That is a seriously old-school blog! :-)
