NEW: When I asked @POTUS Biden in the Oval Office why he wants four more years in office, first he said, "So I can get to answer your questions.
When I asked again, "Why should America give you four more years?" all he said was, "Stay tuned."

(How I hate horse-race op-eds. They are useless.) Will Biden Face a Democratic Challenger? https://t.co/bgtSDQWqyD

Surprise! It’s not a news story, it’s an op-ed — from Ross Doubthat.
Also, on the list of pundits who know fuckall about the Democratic Party Douthat is near the top https://t.co/kUV16ogv3L

It’s amazing to make a comparison favorable to Douthat, but she’s worse.

I don't really know what to tell you, other than you, also, saw the man ride a train ten hours to stand with Zelensky in 🇺🇦 & do literally every aspect of his job better than any of his predecessors in decades these last 2 years. Yes, he's old, but this is lazy ageist nonsense. https://t.co/NCdsz4qpWT pic.twitter.com/e1JJzAUm2e
— Mark Copelovitch (@mcopelov) April 24, 2023
Anyway, I still remain convinced there's a very high probability that all of this ageist obsession is rendered moot in early 2026, because

Dredged up from the bowels of the am thread because I’m a salty yet, thrifty gal: The President’s decision to seek a second term benefits ME personally. This Administration has been more responsive to real people’s actual needs and kitchen table issues. I am thrilled to support the Biden Harris reelection campaign and I SEE RIGHT THROUGH YOUR MISOGYNOIR hiding in plain site, but do go on about the upside of a wide-open primary instead of continuing with a winning administration.
I’m keeping tabs on the “anybody but Kamala Harris” crowd because she’s worth it to me to aid and defender her.

Kind of like Trump having no rivals in 2020 or, evidently, in 2024? Like that, pretend Mr. Concerned Ross?
Chunky Reese for you on line never.

The political media is just bored with Joe Biden. Competence is boring. Bring on the clowns!

Open thread? OK. It’s now possible to pre-order the paperback of my new book, Glass Girl, from the publisher, Inspired Quill. They send it as soon as it’s printed, so you’ll be able to read it before its May 6 release date. They do the pre-order on their site early because they make a little more money if they don’t go through Amazon. They’re good people and I’d like to see them do well.
Eventually there will be ebooks and listings on all the other online sites. Right now, it’s also possible to read the first chapter at that link.
Suzanne
@trollhattan: Ross Douthat, like most right-wing social conservatives, just seems like an endless knot of personality disorders. It’s exhausting.
I hope Chunky Reese Witherspoon is enjoying her life. She dodged a bullet, man.

@Dorothy A. Winsor: I keep saying this, but we can do an Author post any time you like.

@WaterGirl: I have something all ready to send you because I know BJ has been very generous to me. I’m waiting to send it until I have link to places like Amazon to include. Don’t think I don’t appreciate your offer

Don’t know if this was highlighted over the weekend, but since this is an open thread, the WaPo had a lengthy look at what happens when right wing loons take over a county government. It happened in Ottawa County, Michigan, a lovely area on the Lake Michigan shoreline.

It seems pretty clear that Republicans would love for anybody to run except Biden because they know he will destroy Trump.

You’re not just electing Biden. You are electing Biden’s team, who have proven to be talented, hard-working, and wise. This is the true source of the good results we’ve seen.
It is a huge government, and he has put the right people in place
Jeffro
Hell, the Republicans didn’t even bother having a PLATFORM in 2020 – where was the snooze media’s blessed concern THEN?
Geminid
@jackmac: That’s Ottawa County, Michigan story was a good article. It shows the strength of organized Republican radicalism, and also inherent limitations. I hope the Post does a followup a couple years from now.

RFK Jr took major offense to Tucker Carlson’s firing today, if that’s any indication about why we won’t be giving him a platform to slam President Biden in 2024.
RaflW
From what I gleaned the other day, RFK jr managed to mostly avoid saying directly anti-vax things in his announcement event.
But today’s firing of the Swanson’s Scion pushed the Kennedy spawn into ranting conspiracy crap about Covid. So, another win for today.
Dan B
In other news, RT has offered a job to Tucker.
Ha, ha! On payroll instead if under the table.

Russian media is besides itself: where will they get all their best anti-Biden/pro-Russia material NOW?

Hopefully off topic. I am 69 and have let myself get a bit overweight in my 20 years of marriage.
I used to spring up stairs three at a time. Even ten years ago.Now when I kneel down I have to grab something to get up, trying not to groan out loud because knees. And I am technically just a tad overweight by the BMI charts. And mostly otherwise very healthy.
Have you seen Biden at White House events? Kneels down to talk to small children and old ladies in wheelchairs. Then he leaps to his feet. I could not do that.
I am fine with Biden running for President again. I am too old, but he isn’t . He has great genetics and kept in shape. My husband has bad aging genetics. I have good aging genetics but I didn’t keep in shape. My choice, bad choice. But not going to put that on Biden. Also too Jill Biden isn’t Mrs. Woodrow Wilson.

I think someone posted this before, but it’s still the most spot-on, omnidirectional commentary I’ve seen over Tucker getting fired:

RaflW
@Jeffro: Russia Today more or less offered Mr. Fishsticks a job by tweet this morning.
RaflW
To the thread topic: Joe Biden has turned out to be a very, very good administrator, a smart politician with pretty solid insights into what makes both Dem legislators and Repubs tick, and I think is doing a good job of guiding the party overall.
Yeah, he’s old. If his brain is ok, and I think it is, and no one serious is even vaguely making a move at a primary, then by g*d he’s our 2024 incumbent candidate! I’d trust VP Harris to handle the role assigned all Veeps should the very unfortunate occur. That’s why we have a two-person ticket. Misogynoir of a faction of the press and voting public noted, there’s zero chance Ol’ Joe is going to change the ticket.

Has there ever been a President for whom the media DIDN’T speculate that, if reelected, they might just resign in their second term to give their VP a head start as President? It seems to be one of political reporters’ favorite imaginary scenarios, and it has never happened unless you count Nixon resigning in shame under threat of imminent impeachment and conviction, an entirely different context
(see also: “Co-Presidents”, the “Unity Ticket” –to be fair, Abraham Lincoln actually did that last one and the entire nation was completely fucked as a consequence)

Not the odds, but the stakes. That’s my shorthand for the organizing principle we most need in coverage of the 2024 campaign. Not who has what chances of winning, but the consequences for our democracy. Not the odds, but the stakes. This is a report from the odds discourse.
Aussie Sheila
Late to the thread, but anyone suggesting Biden shouldn’t run because of his age is either a Republican or a fool. Probably both. Best US President in my lifetime. If, heaven forfend, something untoward happens during his second term, he has a very competent and hard working VP.
Everything possible should be done to boost the ticket. It’s a great ticket.

@BruceFromOhio: yis loathsome. I refuse to even click on a link.

@Aussie Sheila: and Douthat is a Republican *and* a tool.
