Yutsano will be in Seattle Saturday and Sunday, until 2:00 pm – and Yutsano and Dan B are trying to put together a meetup. Looks like Dan B. is trying to coordinate that.
From Dan B
Yutsao sent me an email about his schedule a couple weeks ago which never arrived, so here we are last minute… Fubar!
Last night I noticed a comment; “Dan B Did you get my email?” I went into last minute panic mode and got his email from Watergirl, phew!
Some thoughts / options we discussed this morning (at last). Since it’s last minute I don’t have time to scout venues outsude what im familiar with but these I know are likely to be quiet enough for a meet-up. They’re near our house on Beacon Hill. They’re reasonably priced. Dim Sum House may be crowded but noise levels are usually not bad.
Casey L is busy Saturday. Yutsano would prefer Dim Sum but would be fine with Thai.
Some options:
Option A
A. Meet-up Sunday 11:00 AM, Dim Sum House on Beacon Hill. Afterward visit Mike’s garden (designed by me), for anyone interested.
Poll: Would you prefer Thai? Chandala Thai is three blocks away. (Need to check hours they operate and if theyve restarted indoor dining.) Dim Sum House operates 9 – 9.
Option B
B. Saturday evening meet-up: Mike’s garden at 5:00 PM followed by Dim Sum House at approx. 6PM. The garden and restaurant are ten short blocks apart.
Option C
C. Meet-up Saturday 5:00 PM and something mid-day on Sunday.
Sunday do Dim Sum + Mike’s with Casey L and anyone else who would prefer Sunday.
I’ll let Dan B. explain the details not hat one in the comments.
Option D (fallback for Sunday at 11:00 AM if Dim Sum is too crowded)
D. There’s also a brewery with great sandwiches on North Beacon Hill, Perihelion Brewery that has one indoor spot for a group and outdoor with fire pits- might not matter at 85° on Sunday. It’s pricier than the other options.
Thoughts?
Speak up in the comments to let the Seattle peeps know if you can make it and what your day/time preferences are!
Oh, and in case you are wondering why you might want to see Mike’s Garden:
Open thread.
Dan B
Just FYI Saturday night garden and meet-up is for folks who are busy Mothers Day but would like to meet. We’d like to gauge interest. Casey L can’t do Saturday.
RSA
@Dan B: Nice stone work!
Virginia
Mike! What a lovely space you have.
John S.
My apologies Seattle jackals, but I leave for Puerto Rico on Saturday morning.
Dan B. is an excellent host, and I would definitely be there if I were in town.
Mel
The garden is breathtaking!
I especially love the stone steps surrounded by the richly colored shade plants, and backed by the lush, gorgeous shrubs and trees.
It’s like a fantasy garden from a fairy tale. It makes me want to follow the path and see all the beauty and wonder.
chrisanthemama
That garden ROCKS.
twbrandt
You have a wonderful place, Dan. I wish I lived anywhere near Seattle! But I live in Dearborn, MI and can’t make it.
Dan B
@twbrandt: To paraphrase a certain movie, “Nobody’s perfect!”
Jackie
BEAUTIFUL garden!!!
Anonymous At Work
Seattle has two seasons and teh current one is “Pleasant”. Highs in the 70s, balmy breeze, 16 hours of daylight. I miss Seattle weather during the “Pleasant” season. I do not miss the other season.
WaterGirl
Once the Seattle peeps have some idea of who can make it and what the plan is, I’ll add the info in the the meetup area in the sidebar.
Dan B
@Anonymous At Work: Two seasons, early Spring and late Spring. Also known as:
A. Mole people, and
B. Running naked through your gardens.
twbrandt
@Dan B: and no one exemplifies “Nobody’s perfect” more than I.
Dan B
@RSA: Mike installed the stone. He’ll appreciate the compliment. These pictures show maybe 1/6th of it. There are lots of stone retaining walls.
Anonymous At Work
@Dan B: More the “unpleasant” season where the highs are 50, it’s overcast with some form of moisture, and the sun is only over the horizon for 6 hours or so. Not that you can tell unless you get a “sun break”.
Spanky
Well, I’m 3000 miles away, but the dim sum and the garden are mighty tempting!
Omnes Omnibus
@Spanky: Start driving now.
Dan B
@Omnes Omnibus: That’s the spirit!
Yutsano
@Omnes Omnibus: *stares*
General Mitchell Airport ain’t that far bub…
Omnes Omnibus
@Dan B: I will be doing Mother’s Day with my family, but that’s no reason not encourage someone to attempt a diet pill and energy drink fueled* solo Cannonball Run. I am nothing if not helpful.
*No meth, I am not a monster.
@Yutsano: My 81 y/o mother would not appreciate that.
John Cole
That yard is fucking beautiful and GOALS.
WaterGirl
@John Cole: What does GOALS mean in this context?
(I clearly need to get out more.)
CaseyL
Thank you, DanB, for putting this together so fast!
That is an amazing yard and garden: I very much want to see it.
Haven’t seen Yutsano in ages, and very much want to see him.
But Sunday morning is no good for me, either. I Skype with my Mom (who lives in Florida) every Sunday at 10:00, and I cannot miss doing so on Mother’s Day.
Sunday afternoon or evening is fine, though!
BeautifulPlumage
I’ll try to make this one! I’m concerned that Mother’s day will be busy everywhere. My first choice is meet up in Mike’s garden & walk to evening Dim Sum. Sunday anytime also works for me if that’s the prevailing choice.
Dan B
@CaseyL: Yutsano has to leave at 2:00 PM on Sunday to get home. ;<(
Dan B
@CaseyL: Yutsano has to leave at 2:00 PM on Sunday to get home. ;<(
@CaseyL: Would noon or 1 PM work for you? Dim Sum house might be crowded by then.
WaterGirl
Maybe a midnight meetup at Mike’s place? :-)
Dan B
@BeautifulPlumage: Yutsano is open to Saturday evening. The walk to Dim Sum is on Columbian Way – busy, or local streets plus Chief Sealth Trail – nicer.
WaterGirl
@BeautifulPlumage: Since it will be mother’s day and likely very busy, could you guys get takeout and eat somewhere else?
Dan B
@WaterGirl: You so funny!!
kalakal
That is a gorgeous garden!
Dan B
@WaterGirl: It’s an idea. There are tables and chairs in the garden so if we ordered Dim Sum at 10 AM we could be in the garden at 11:30 AM. 85° Sunday.
WaterGirl
@Dan B: If you did the midnight thing, it truly would be the famed BJ After Dark.
Okay, heading for bed now before all the groaning starts.
Omnes Omnibus
@WaterGirl: There is a reason it is customary to spell out Balloon Juice in that construct.
The Up and Up
Regrettably I did not take many photos of the last impromptu, Yutsano comes over the Mountains to Seattle Balloon Juice meet up, I attended. That was at the Pike Place Market, 12 February 2022. Someone … CaseyL I think … brought green balloons so we’d all be able to know where to go. I crafted a rudimentary flier featuring a likeness of the blog-father John Cole, some of the chyron quotes atop the website banner, and “Seattle Rendezvous This Saturday!” That was the random thing I tried to show Cole on the recent video call. CaseyL said to save it for the next time. I want to say four people were present. We had a bite to eat at The Crumpet Shop.
Yutsano
To be fair: I don’t HAVE to leave at 2pm. I don’t want to leave too horribly late but I do have to leave on Sunday. So dim sum at noon on Sunday or Thai food Saturday evening is fine too. I’m flexible.
Dan B
@Yutsano: We might end up with Dim Sum Saturday evening and Thai takeout to eat in Mike’s garden on Sunday. Dim Sum house could be a zoo on Mothers Day. At least they’re just a few blocks apart so we can improvise.
Now to see who else is interested.
CaseyL
@The Up and Up: Hi! So good to see you unlurk for a bit! I remember that impromptu: it was delightful.
I think I send a report to WaterGirl at the time, but it never got posted. (It was, IIRC, a very busy time on Balloon Juice.)
I might be able to make Saturday evening, if I leave right after kalakal’s Zoom. Or noon-ish on Sunday.
I don’t imagine Mike is within walking distance of the lightrail station, is he?
BeautifulPlumage
@Dan B: this sounds like a good plan, too! Eating outside in this lovely weather would be great
thalarctosMaritimus
@CaseyL: A bit over a mile from the lightrail station. It’s downhill a lot of the way to his house; I walk it from time to time–not Mike’s place, but I live nearby. Even though I have blood clots in my legs and am slow, it’s not difficult. The other way is a bit more effort because more uphill, but still not bad. And if we’re there at the same time, I could give you a ride to the station.
Dan B
@CaseyL: We can pick you up from the station. Mike loves to drive. Loves. Really enjoys! It’s very close.
Dan B
@BeautifulPlumage: I agree. Outside is wonderful. We’ve got great options. Outside or inside great food and stories with camaraderie. Likely.
MazeDancer
That garden is stunning!
Have fun whatever you do. But wowza on the garden!
