Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Let there be snark.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Reality always gets a vote in the end.

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

Let me file that under fuck it.

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

The willow is too close to the house.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

Guess who came in third in the Kentucky Republican gubernatorial primary, with a smidgen over 17% of the vote (WaPo link.

…Kelly Craft, a wealthy ex-ambassador whose multi-million dollar campaign has attacked “transgenderism” and “wokeness” through a consulting firm that’s about to work on Ron DeSantis’s presidential campaign.

In the race’s final hours, DeSantis himself cut a robocall for Craft, and Ted Cruz, Axiom’s most successful client, joined her on the trail. “You will not see the Washington establishment in my office,” Craft told a country club crowd outside of Lexington on Saturday. “You will see God in my office.” Source

Anne, lots of people I follow on the bird site have been sounding the alarm about “Nature is Amazing” account.  According to them, this account and others are Musk and Musk adjacent created sites that supposed lure people in with cute nature vids but ultimately push RW prop.  The tell?  Number of followers vs number followed.  So they say.  Just passing this along.

    Also recalling an ancient joke.

Jesus on the golf course, tees off. (Make up your own version of who else constitutes the foursome.)

Slices the shot. Ball disappears into the greenery, then thunk, bounces off a tree, propelled clear across the fairway.

Another thunk and it sails onto the green, rolls to the edge of the cup, teeters, and drops in.

Jesus raises his face to the sky, exclaiming “Father, please, I’d rather do it myself!”

Good night for progressives in the Dem primaries here.  In Allegheny County, Sarah Innamorato has won the nomination for county executive, a young (35 yo) state rep endorsed by Mayor Gainey and US Rep Summer Lee.  If she wins the general, she’ll be the first female and youngest County Executive ever.  Also, Matt Dugan beat Steve Zappala, who has been DA for something like 26 years.  Dugan is the former head public defender for the county.  And in my own county, Beaver County, a former student of mine, won a nomination for our county commission.  If he wins the general, he’ll be the first Black county commissioner here.  He also is young (mid-30s) and progressive.

Well, I don’t live in the city, so I can’t really say much other than my own impressions. He has mostly kept the base happy. They are cautiously optimistic about the new police chief. He shows up at all the big events and seems to have the politicking thing down. The biggest sport in Pittsburgh, after Steelers football, is complaining about snow removal and, after a disaster for the city’s snow removal during and after a major snowfall right after he was inaugurated, he seems to be getting some grudging respect for his efforts in that area ever since. I like him myself. He seems genial and so much a part of the African American community here. You can especially sense his joy at those events. He’s been good on LGBTQ issues and has said he will welcome any asylum seekers who may get shipped here by the horrible assholes in FL and TX and has made preparations in conjunction with Pittsburgh’s Latino community. He gets himself to most gun violence scenes and memorials for victims and is properly outraged by gun culture.
From thirty-some miles away, he seems pretty good and fairly popular with the base.

I loved the cat watching the cats walking. From the replies on the actual post, I learned that the walking cats are in a Studio Ghibli movie The Cat Returns, which I promptly bought on Amazon. Thanks for that addition to the Relaxing and Beautiful section of my video library.

You might want to reconsider following NatureIsAmazing on Twitter.  Before yesterday it had one follower – Elon Musk.  Today it has 3 and one is the new CEO.  I read somewhere that that account is Elon’s.  I unfollowed.

@Bruce K in ATH-GR: Now I remember a variant in which Jesus is playing with St Peter, who hits a major tee shot, then JC hits his seventy-‘leven carom into the cup,and Pete sez disgustedly,

Hey! Are you gonna fuck around or are you gonna play golf?!?!?!
