Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This blog will pay for itself.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

The willow is too close to the house.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

“woke” is the new caravan.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Spilling the end game before they can coat it in frankl luntz-approved dogwhistles.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Republicans don’t trust women.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

DeSantis transforms Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

So Sad (Not Really!) Open Thread

So sad for Kari Lake that she lost the race for governor yet again, which I believe is the final one.

So sad for Trump that his recent remarks about E. Jean Carroll are going to bit him in the ass as part of the existing lawsuit she already had gong.

Seems like there’s a lot to be (not) sad about lately.

What are you (not) sad about?

Definitely not sad that Marco’s feelings got hurt by the Dodgers deciding not to be scared little rabbits after all. If there’s a chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence near his hometown, I hope they put on a show just for him.

Still amused by an email I got last night. A Canadian colleague of mine is trying to organize a meeting that would take place on a weekend, and he originally suggested first weekend of July. And then followed up, in surprise and some disgust, saying that he had no idea that so many Americans plan to take long weekends off in the vicinity of July 4th. Uh, yeah, it’s a thing. Don’t try to schedule something for the 4th Thursday of November either. People might already have plans.

So not sad about BJP getting its ass handed to it, in its southern bastion, Karnataka home to the IT and outsourcing hub of Benguluru (previous Bangalore)

Also not sad about, multibillionaire Sudha Murthy (Sunak’s MIL and the wife Infosys founder Narayana Murthy) becoming a meme for her poverty cosplay. She is like a female Uriah Heep who goes on and on about how ‘umble she is.

(Not) Sad that Ron DeSantis’ latest anti-drag law is getting a challenge by the restaurant Hamburger Mary’s, a drag themed restaurant that has lost business since the law went into effect.

There used to be a Hamburger Mary’s in Portland, OR.  The food wasn’t bad, they made a good burger and good portion size.  A friend of mine and I would go after work for happy hour on occasion, while gay bingo was going on.  I didn’t know there were any left.  Their schtick was to bring your bill to you in a high heeled shoe.

My friend is very Republican, but not so much on the social issues, and he likes a good burger.  He would often suggest going there.

Had a disasterous non profit job interview today.  SO had taken my webcam over the weekend and then the macbook pro up and died over it and is in for repairs.   So, no video!   Then about 10 mins in Comcast died so I had to call into Zoom.  What a mess, and it’s for an IT job so I look the fool.   The rest went pretty well but I have a feeling I’m not going to get it.  The one hope was at the end the director said he’d never hired someone he hadn’t seen before so please send a picture.  So I ran a few blocks to a friends to steal his webcam, fixed Comcast, and then sent a picture.  Fingers crossed!

it was brought up across the border by large Corporations. The Big Box Stores and cross border brands. Funny thing is, it hasn’t been a big deal in my neck of the woods for about 5 years. The deals arn’t deals and are switch and bait. Playstation XXX for $57.99, and then in fine print, (2 per store, regular price $257.99).

A&B used to have a “Midnight Madness Sale” back in the ’80’s in early December. Blaupunkt car stereo’s for $99.99 until they are gone, 75 per store, any CD, $2.99, etc. Doors would open at midnight, close at 5am. By 5am the stores would look like they had been looted in a zombie apocolypse.

Yeah there are fireworks and Citizenship ceremonies, but it’s mostly chill, and in Quebec and Ontario, if you can, you go to the cottage, otherwise, you go camping, except in Vancouver, where you go to Chinatown and eat dim sum, because it takes 6 hours to get out of town at 30kmh on the Friday, (as far as Hope, Squamish or Twassen/Deep Cove if you have ferry reservations)

It’s faster to head south to Bellingham and go to the mall.

“I left a prescription at a pharmacy once. I went to get birth control,” Boebert said. “And I was there at the counter and went to pay for it, and the price was very, very high. I said, ‘Wow, is this a three-, six-month prescription?’ ‘No ma’am, this is one month.’ And I said, ‘It’s cheaper to have a kid,’ and I left it there.”

She added that as a result of not purchasing the contraception, she now has “my third son, Kaydon Boebert.”

      Good on them.

Ford is reversing course on AM radio.

In a tweet today, CEO Jim Farley announced the company was backing off its decision to release new vehicles without AM radio broadcast capabilities. Instead, all 2024 Ford and Lincoln models will be able to tune in to AM radio. And for the two electric vehicles released without AM radio capabilities, a software update would be pushed to restore it. Source

Building in more robust wiring insulation/isolation for radios in EVs might run what – less than a buck per vehicle?

Realizing this thread has already gone on a while…Philip Bump of the WaPo is pointing out more than he thinks when he notes that Reality Is an Endlessly Useful Political Opponent.

Kari Lake is wondering why, if she really lost, why everyone is so INSISTENT that she lost!  And in her mind, that’s proof that she won!

      WACK. O

For Lake, that second element is easy to establish. Lake’s entry into politics was predicated on the idea that the system couldn’t be trusted. Yes, she’d have liked to have won the gubernatorial election, but it was hardly an obstacle that she didn’t. She held the same position on the legitimacy of elections the month before she lost and the month after. The election on Nov. 8 was not determinative, it was a data point.

In so doing, she’s done something other losing candidates haven’t: She has retained the spotlight. On Nov. 8, 2022, Lake had about 550,000 followers on Twitter. Now she has 1.2 million. Some of that is likely a function of Elon Musk inviting conspiracy theorists back to the platform. But some of it is that Lake’s campaign against the establishment — and, more broadly, against reality — has continued unabated.

This means she has fulfilled the first of our two conditions: She’s weeding out countervailing evidence.

What’s even weirder?  In that same article?  Apparently there’s an R even crazier than Lake!

WHAT’S WITH ALL THESE GLOBES, IF THE EARTH IS SUPPOSEDLY “ROUND”, ANYWAY??!

Kandiss Taylor also ran for governor last year, coming in third in Georgia’s Republican primary. On Monday, a snippet of an interview she conducted with a flat-Earther — that is, someone who claims our planet isn’t round — circulated online.

In it, Taylor endorses the idea that the Earth is flat, not by citing evidence but by pointing out the pervasiveness of representations of a non-flat Earth.

“Everywhere, there’s globes. You see them all the time,” Taylor said. “ … They’re everywhere. And that’s what they do to brainwash.”

“For me, if it is not a conspiracy, if it is real, why are you pushing so hard?” she added.

You will not be surprised to learn that, despite losing the Republican gubernatorial primary by 70 points last year, Taylor also claimed the election was tainted by fraud.

A LOT more.  Most consumers don’t get this but speaking as an IT person when something is rated for industrial use the cost skyrockets.  Hence why if I’m running an HDMI cable through building walls that sucker is going to cost 10x per foot to make code than what is just your Playstation to TV cable.  If there are temperature issues at play you have to factor in get ready cause it will be worse.  Anything electrical is going to get pricy and quick.  Then there are inspection and certification costs.  The reality is that EVs are going to make vehicles in general cost a ton more.   There’s also the issue that used EVs are non starters as replacing the battery costs so much you might as well junk the car and get a new one.  So get ready for massive toxic waste on a scale you haven’t seen before.

EVs are not the solution.  Better public transit is.  But as long as EVs are the goal get ready for more waste than you have ever seen that’s insanely toxic, cost increases, and a general shit show.

Good news update on Jimmy Carter!😊

NORCROSS, Ga. — “Three months after entering end-of-life care at home, former President Jimmy Carter remains in good spirits as he visits with family, follows public discussion of his legacy and receives updates on The Carter Center’s humanitarian work around the world, his grandson says. He’s even enjoying regular servings of ice cream.”

“They’re just meeting with family right now, but they’re doing it in the best possible way: the two of them together at home,” Jason Carter said of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, now 98 and 95 years old.”

@NotMax: Wow, the AM circuitry was in the EV models, and just not enabled in software? That seems weird in cost/weight and energy savings. Of course the default hardware would probably have AM support, so it may have been cheaper to disable it.

OTOH The software update is hardly likely to do anything for RFI if that was really an issue. But if it stops legislated changes who cares if it really works?

I would be fine with radios, AM, FM, and/or Satellite being an option. They didn’t used to be standard equipment.

I’m not sad that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and The Great are streaming right now. I’m also not sad my daughter and son-in-law got us a subscription to Wondrium for Christmas.

@Rebel’s Dad: The “Internet of Things” is one of the stupidest concepts in our stupid culture.  Any device connected to the internet can be, and probably will be, infected with viruses and other malware.  I’m not saying that it should never be done, but it should be done sparingly and carefully, with careful assessment of both the advantages and the dangers.  They marketing push to connect everything to the internet is just idiotic and dangerous.
