Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Books are my comfort food!

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Celebrate the fucking wins.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

“But what about the lurkers?”

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

How stupid are these people?

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

    From WaPo,

Former president Donald Trump said Thursday night that he’s been charged by the Justice Department in connection with the discovery that hundreds of classified documents were taken to his Mar-a-Lago home after he left the White House — a widely anticipated but also seismic event in the nation’s political and legal history.

Several Trump advisers confirmed the charges. Trump said he has been summoned to appear in federal court in Miami on Tuesday at 3 p.m. A seven-count indictment has been filed in federal court naming the former president as a criminal defendant, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe a case that has yet to be unsealed.

Here’s a taste of Trump’s defense strategy.  Straight from TruthSocial: HaHaHa!

Page 1: The corrupt Biden Administration has informed my attorneys that I have been Indicted, seemingly over the Boxes Hoax, even though Joe Biden has 1850 Boxes at the University of Delaware, additional Boxes in Chinatown, D.C., with even more Boxes at the University of Pennsylvania, and documents strewn all over his garage floor where he parks his Corvette, and which is “secured” by only a garage door that is paper thin, and open much of the time.

Page 2: I have been summoned to appear at the Federal Courthouse in Miami on Tuesday, at 3 PM. I never thought it possible that such a thing could happen to a former President of the United States, who received far more votes than any sitting President in the History of our Country, and is currently leading, by far, all Candidates, both Democrat and Republican, in Polls of the 2024 Presidential Election. I AM AN INNOCENT MAN!

Page 3: This is indeed a DARK DAY for the United States of America. We are a Country in serious and rapid Decline, but together we will Make America Great Again!

I AM AN INNOCENT MAN. THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION IS TOTALLY CORRUPT. THIS IS ELECTION INTERFERENCE & A CONTINUATION OF THE GREATEST WITCH HUNT OF ALL TIME. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!

    The Post again

“I have been indicted, seemingly over the Boxes Hoax,” Trump posted on social media site Truth Social. He claimed he was being treated unfairly. “I never thought it possible that such a thing could happen to a former President of the United States,” he said in a screed that ended: “I AM AN INNOCENT MAN!”

“Screed” is in the original story. Heh.

The full screed, seen in screenshot at TPM’s live blog, is quite something, even by TFG’s standards. Did you know that Joe Biden keeps his Corvette in a garage with a paper-thin door that is open most of the time? I didn’t.

But with all the parallel criminal and civil cases, and all the associated hearings and motions and squid ink and delays he’ll try to throw at the process, he’s going to spend every day for the rest of his life feeling despair, incoherent rage, and deep existential fear. However and whenever it all ends.

    And I find that comforting.

btw Emptywheel wanted to remind everyone that it is a sober event.

reminds me of Nixon’s resignation. I was home from my first year of college and a bunch of friends and I got some beer and pizza and headed for Lafayette Square. It was party time. A huge cheer went up when a moving van came by. Someone had a radio and had a station where a news reporter was reporting from the scene. He was saying something like “I wish I could say it is a somber scene here”. Somber hell. We wanted that dick gone. Now we want the orange fart cloud gone and will celebrate bigly each step of the way.

More stunning NYT brilliance, from Shear:

One might think that Trump’s chief political rival, President Biden, would make political hay of the charges. But Biden has always vowed to stay far away from the Justice Department, so it would be very complicated for him to do that. Trump could use anything he said to fuel accusations of a political prosecution.

No, one might not think that, if one knows anything about President Biden, a man who actually has an adult level of maturity, unlike Trump.

Now, this is a good day.

Good to hear about Trump. And I think I have reason to expect a slam dunk of a charging statement — “the defendant did THIS . . . and THIS . . . and we will show THIS . . . and THAT . . . etc.   Trump may put out tissue-thin, incoherent argle bargle. Jack Smith is not going to be embarassed in Federal Court.

On the other hand, this is only my second-favorite story of the day.

Last night, my wife and I pulled into the outer banks of NC, where youngest daughter was expecting her second son / our 9th g’child. And sure enough, we were awakened at 6AM (5AM Central Time); daughter and husband went to hospital at 7AM; and 11:06 AM the child arrived. June 8 — a day to remember. We were in charge of the two-year-old, who got to see his “cute,” “tiny” little brother at 6PM.

In addition, the new grandson has my name as his (middle) name. There was some discussion about how the name might be a surprise to some, which had brought up the legend of the name of our third child, some 39 years ago. It wasn’t my mother’s favorite name. Not that she said anything against it. What she said was (and I quote):

“I’m sure we’ll grow to love the name, dear.”

@TS:   The statement is actually true, just totally irrelevant, and in no way an achievement of TFG .  He confined the comparison to “sitting presidents” by which he clearly means “presidents running for re-election as an incumbent”.  And he’s comparing absolute numbers of votes, not percentages.  Purely due to population growth, TFG got more votes ( 74.2 million) even than major landslides such as Reagan in 1984 (54.5 million),  Nixon in 1972 (47.2 million) , LBJ in 1964 (43.1 million) and FDR in 1936 (27.7 million).  Of course, Reagan, Nixon, LBJ and FDR got much higher percentages of the votes, but TFG did get the most votes in simple numbers.

He’s not really being stupid himself (this time) he’s counting on his MAGA followers being stupid.

this is true, not just for next week in FL but going forward

his crazies here, there, and everywhere are already just waiting for his instructions to go violently berserk (or as I put it a few days ago, for him to just say ‘kill them all’)

if trump does it, I can see him being taken into custody almost immediately and charged for that, too.  It would be yet another clarifying moment for the country and while the hardest of the hard core would stay proudly defiant, I have to believe that a former president telling his supporters to flat-out kill his enemies would leave the vast majority ready to throw trump in jail and throw away the key.

OT but bringing you all this amazing snippet from Brooksie as the cherry on the sundae after the Robertson, Watt, and now trumpov-indictment news:

Personally, I have a lot of sympathy for the No Labels effort. I’ve longed for a party that would revive the moderate strain in American politics exemplified by Alexander Hamilton, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, John McCain and contemporaries like Michael Bloomberg*.

If the 2024 election was Bernie Sanders versus Ron DeSantis, I’d support the No Labels effort 1,000 percent. An independent candidate would bring this moderate tradition into the 21st century, and if Sanders or DeSantis ended up winning, his agenda might not be my cup of tea, but I could live with him.

Donald Trump changes the equation. A second Trump presidency represents an unprecedented threat to our democracy. In my view, our sole focus should be to defeat Trump. This is not the time to be running risky experiments, the outcomes of which none of us can foresee.

Furthermore, I’m persuaded that a third candidate would indeed hurt Biden more. Trump voters are solidly behind him, while Biden voters are wobbly. Then there’s the group of voters called the “double-haters.” They dislike both candidates. The Wall Street Journal recently quoted Tony Fabrizio, a Republican pollster, who said Biden was up by 39 points with such voters.

Finally, if America wants a relative moderate who is eager to do bipartisan deal making, it already has one. In fact, he’s already sitting in the Oval Office. Joe Biden doesn’t get sufficient credit, but he has negotiated a bunch of deals on infrastructure, the CHIPS Act, guns, the debt limit. As long as Biden is running, we don’t need a third option.

    I know, right?  Wow.

June 8th is now a quad-fecta of a banner day in American history!!

*but we must remember to properly mock the lumping-together of Hamilton, Lincoln, and Roosevelt with…McCain and Bloomberg…at SOME point!

It will be interesting to see which lawyer(s) step up as Trump’s defense team. Will it be actual legal talent or the usual motley crew of marginally-qualified mob lawyer hacks whose main tactic is to scream and threaten and pound the table? He no doubt recognizes that shit just got real and he needs real legal representation now, but anyone competent he could retain will surely only take the case if he agrees to remain in a Hannibal Lecter-style restraint system with a ball gag throughout the entire process so he can’t run his mouth in court or post on social media about the “stupid, fat lady judge” or threaten jury members or whatever.

    @Burnspbesq:

Thanks. I can effortlessly handle a never ending amount of news like what we’ve heard today.

In truth, I care the most about the case in Georgia. If they indict him and manage to put together a jury without a single MAGAt on it, then Trump won’t be able to pardon himself, if re-elected.

I don’t think any of these cases are guaranteed to cost Trump the nomination. But if they can get 12 honest jurors in Georgia (a very tall order), then Trump could actually do time.

Best case scenario? All these cases cause Trump so much stress that is head explodes and we’re done with him forever. (Except, of course, for his elevation to martyr and saint.)

We will have to see how it plays out. Florida is Trump friendly, but jury selection will be tight. The Right Wing Circuit and District courts in Florida may try to throw a wrench in the process. For now, I’m happy.

@Percysowner: The big take away was the law moves SLOWLY. Also, too Merrick Garland knows that “if you come for the king, you best not miss” and made sure he had all his ducks in a row before he moved.

Agreed. Mostly aimed at those that said it would never happen. And props to those who are admitting their shock and surprise.

Not a lawyer, but I’ve been cautiously optimistic, based on all the super obvious criming that’s been happening.

    Just… Slow… Moving… Process.

@Manyakitty: It has occurred to me that the MAGAts have gone so far around the bend that the Dems can honestly reclaim patriotism while they denounce it to own the libs.

Just a wafer-thin bit of more schadenfreude: there was a hearing today for the lawyers who used Chat GPT for research and submitted non-existent cases for their legal doc.

@Baud: Maybe Trump can have Robert Hanssen’s cell in Supermax. It just became available.

In the unlikely event he is convicted, I think we can expect house arrest at Mar-a-Lago with full golfing privileges. Anything more would clearly be “cruel and unusual punishment.”

    Poor baby.

@jonas:  Props to Messi for not following craven sell-out Ronaldo to the fucking Saudi league. Like David Beckham when he joined the LA Galaxy, he’s a senior player now and probably won’t be a huge factor on the field, but could still bring some excitement to the US MLS and Miami in particular. He is going to jack attendance through the roof.  Not just Miami. But every away game as well.

Been without electricity for the last five hours due to local storms. I couldn’t wait to get here to join the celebration. Hooray for Jack Smith and Merrick Garland and all their hardworking DoJ cohorts. This is just the beginning.

    @Jim, Foolish Literalist:

Somebody do wellness checks on Cacti and Will Stincel. I’m sure they’re feeling terribly betrayed because Merrick Garland didn’t betray them

Along the lines of “X can’t fail, it can only be failed”, isn’t this a case of “Garland can’t fail-to-betray, he can only be failed to fail-to-betray”?

So, the big news yesterday was that James Watt died? I had no idea that fucker was still alive – he’d been dead to me for years.

Oh, and I guess a couple other things happened too.
