Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

In short, I come down firmly on all sides of the issue.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Let me file that under fuck it.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

I conferred with the team and they all agree – still not tired of winning!

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Even though I know this is a bad idea, I’m off to do it anyway!

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Russia bombs Ukraine’s maternity hospitals; Republicans in the House can’t sort out supporting Ukraine.

Nikki Haley, who can’t acknowledge ‘slavery’, is a pathetic shill.

‘Find Out’ Level Unlocked

This post is in: 2024 Elections, Immigration, Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity

Last month, Ron DeSantis signed an anti-immigrant law that goes into effect July 1. It contains many shitty provisions designed to make life harder for the state’s approximately 800K undocumented immigrants.

There’s a labor shortage in Florida, and many industries, including landscaping, agriculture and construction, rely heavily on undocumented immigrant labor. In the runup to the bill’s passage and since the signing, I’ve heard rumors of boycotts and seen photos of idled construction sites and farm operations, etc., but I hadn’t personally seen any hard evidence of the backlash until Adam sent me this yesterday:

Got footage from inside this event. They admit the bill is “100% meant to scare” immigrants and beg the crowd to “urgently” convince “your people” to not leave Florida since folks in the agriculture industry are mad workers are leaving. The hypocrisy is so brazen and disgusting. https://t.co/LzsV2qgG0F pic.twitter.com/BnWnWCWqcI

— Thomas Kennedy (@tomaskenn) June 5, 2023

Sorry about the tweets, but there it is — three South Florida GOP lawmakers addressing pastors who serve immigrant communities. The Repub hypocrites, all of whom voted for the bill, are basically begging the preachers to tell their congregants to stay in Florida so the crops won’t rot, noting that “farmers are mad” that immigrants are leaving. So yeah, it’s real, and they are in a panic.

This was totally predictable because other red states have done similar anti-immigrant stunts and wound up with no one to tend their landscaping, construct their buildings or pick their crops. But Ron DeSantis has a presidential campaign to run, and he doesn’t give a shit what happens to the suckers who reelected him (let alone the folks who tried to vote his sorry ass out).

The bill that is causing this panic also funnels more money into the undocumented immigrant “relocation” program. DeSantis uses that slush fund to pay a private jet company that’s affiliated with his administration to fly immigrants from Texas to other states, most recently California. Last night, Governor Newsom called DeSantis a “small, pathetic man” and threated to charge him with kidnapping for luring immigrants onto planes under false pretenses and dumping them in California. (LAT)

In Texas, the Bexar County sheriff also recommended criminal charges against the DeSantis administration for its Martha’s Vineyard campaign stunt. (Miami Herald) So maybe Trump won’t be the only indicted GOP presidential candidate from Florida.

Open thread.

On The Road – Dextrous – Dijon, France

Dextrous

Of the places we have visited in the last five years when we began travelling, France keeps pulling us back.  In August 2022, we journeyed around France by train using Eurail passes. Our stops were restricted to places we could get to by train, and we focused on the east central region. Our first base was Dijon, from which we took day trips to Beaune, Vienne and Alesia.

On The Road - Dextrous - Dijon, France 7
Triumphal Arch, Dijon

The entrance to the old part of Dijon is through a triumphal arch. This is an 18th century arch and while not historically meaningful to me, gave the perfect entry into one of the most charming well-preserved old quarters I have seen. Although the paved plaza is continuous before and after the arch, the mental transition is remarkable. The view is a vision of the old quarter as seen from the outside.

RFKlown Jr’s Twitter-Space Open Thread: Musk Now Boosting Jack Dorsey’s Endorsed Candidate

by Anne Laurie|  June 5, 20239:28 pm| 86 Comments

This post is in: 2024 Primaries, Open Threads, Republican Venality, social media

Where are the (DeSaster) snow-jobs of yesteryear last week? Well, Musk gets bored easily, everyone laughed at Ronnie’s Big Reveal, and maybe Elon needs some kind of favor from Jack…

On his Twitter Spaces, Robert F. Kennedy is talking about spending three months in East Africa in a tent with former Fox News president Roger Ailes when he was 19. This guy is running for the Democratic Party nomination.

— Ben Collins (@oneunderscore__) June 5, 2023

Listening to this RFK Jr. and Elon on this Spaces and it’s like none of these people were alive 3 years ago.

They’re talking about the “media” doing the bidding of whatever politician is in power. I was an Enemy of the People for not accepting President Trump’s lies. Pick one.

Elon in the RFK Jr. Spaces finally admitting financial problems at Twitter: “Half of our advertising disappeared overnight because we’re insisting on free speech… they’re literally trying to drive Twitter bankrupt.”…

This RFK Jr. Twitter Space has, once again, turned into his guest just giving Elon Musk compliments and asking him variations of “what made you so brave to purchase Twitter, sir?”

“That’s very, very moving and very, very admirable and I want to thank you for your service.” — RFK Jr. just now to Elon Musk, who is now comparing Elon Musk to a Revolutionary War soldier.

I’m not kidding.

Here we go, RFK Jr. now going after Elon Musk about Neuralink.

RFK Jr. agreed with with Musk’s assessment that “First, AI is going to take all of our jobs, and then it’s going to murder us.” RFK has dabbled in transhumanism panic for years, so he’s pretty upset about Neuralink.

RFK Jr. now asking “what are we going to do with — and I’m using a bad characterization, but — surplus humans” — if full self-driving becomes real.

Elon reassures him that “full self-driving is not going to be an existential risk to civilization.”

Brainworms all the way down.

About 40 minutes into RFK Jr.’s presidential town hall on Twitter Spaces, Elon finally says “I think the American public would like to hear about your presidential run.”

It’s been almost entirely Elon flattery, weird lies about the Twitter Files, and the AI apocalypse so far.

RFK Jr. pushing an interesting conspiracy theory that Twitter wouldn’t allow him to get more than 900,000 followers, and that he would be “cut back” to 800,000 followers when he got close.

Couldn’t possible be bots or that people stopped following him because of his views.

RFK Jr.’s Elon Musk Twitter Spaces is devolving as one of the last Twitter Files writer guys fights with either the mute button or a tough wifi situation. Honestly, the most relatable part of this chat so far.

Follow the money(tization):

Huh. Wonder why he decided to run for President. https://t.co/zgoZrvBC8b

War for Ukraine Day 467: The Cost Part I’ve Lost Count

The cost:

When 21 year old Ostap Onistrat joined the Ukrainian army to defend his country, his father Andriy, a well-known Ukrainian banker, had no second thoughts: he had to be there on the battlefield with his son. He wanted to protect him, to shield his heroic boy from the brutalities… pic.twitter.com/aHncGx94UJ

Here’s the full text of the MOD’s tweet:

When 21 year old Ostap Onistrat joined the Ukrainian army to defend his country, his father Andriy, a well-known Ukrainian banker, had no second thoughts: he had to be there on the battlefield with his son. He wanted to protect him, to shield his heroic boy from the brutalities of the war… Two days ago Ostap’s life was cut short by enemy shrapnel. Another Ukrainian father has lost his son. Ukraine has lost her son. The loss is irreparable. Victory is inevitable. We all owe it to Ostap.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump. Just a heads up, they’ve overdubbed the video in English.

Some people are very hard to satisfy…

Not to be too churlish, and good for Governor Sununu on this, but criticizing Trump on his policy failures, while not noting that he is also a sociopath who incited an insurrection seems a little too gentle https://t.co/VfdhefInIT

JUST IN: RNC announces criteria for first GOP debate this summer

— Candidates must sign pledge to support eventual nominee
— Candidates must have a minimum of 40,000 unique donors with 200 per state/territory in at least 20 states
— Poll at least 1% in three recognized polls pic.twitter.com/LsZzeRTJQT

— Allan Smith (@akarl_smith) June 2, 2023

… The criteria for the debate, scheduled for Aug. 23 in Milwaukee, come as the Republican presidential primary field grows more crowded, with several contenders expected to join the race in the coming days and weeks. A second debate could be held on Aug. 24 if enough candidates qualify, the R.N.C. said in a statement.

To qualify for the stage, candidates must garner support of at least 1 percent in multiple national polls recognized by the committee, and some polling from the early-voting states will count as well. The candidates must also have a minimum of 40,000 unique donors to their campaign, with at least 200 unique donors per state or territory, in 20 states and territories, according to the committee.

The 40,000-donor debate threshold is likely to prove a consequential and costly barrier to some underfunded candidates. Republican campaigns had already been told informally about the criteria, and some were racing to ensure they had enough donors. Some super PACs are spending money for online ads to drive small donations to the campaigns…
