Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

with the Kraken taking a plea, the Cheese stands alone.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

So cool that a Black prosecutor nailed his ass.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Never forget that he train is barreling down on Trump, even as he dances on the tracks.

“Cheese and Kraken paired together for the appetizer trial.”

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

“And when the Committee says to “report your income,” that could mean anything!

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Don’t expect peaches from an apple tree.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Mr. Modi Comes to Washington

by schrodingers_cat

Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi is in DC for a state visit complete with a state dinner. This is definitely a public relations coup for the PM and India’s foreign policy apparatus. PM’s party the BJP suffered a humiliating defeat in an important state level election and is defensive about the ongoing violence in the state of Manipur. There was also a railway accident which took the lives of several hundred so this international visit comes at politically opportune time for the PM and his party. However as an Indian American this does not make me happy. In fact it is one of the rare decisions by the Biden administration that I disagree with.

Ultimately dealing with the PM of India is up to Indian voters and not US President. But this visit does confer legitimacy to the oft repeated claim by the PM’s fanatical followers or bhakts(devotees) that their PM is a respected global leader. The PM and his party will face the voters in less than a year’s time in 2024. Hosting the PM of India at this juncture is like hosting Bolsanaro for a state dinner just before the Brazilian elections.

I am a staunch Biden supporter I voted for him both in the primaries and in the general election. I also recognize that Biden is an old foreign policy hand.  During his senate career he served as the chair of foreign relations committee so he gets the benefit of doubt from me. I will wait before I pass judgment about whether this helps or hurts US interests.

If the BJP can repeat its performance in the last two elections and go on to form a government on its own strength we can say without a doubt that India as we know it would be in great danger. It would be a win for an extremely ugly authoritarian ideology which derives inspiration from some of the most disastrous ideologies of the 20th century, Nazism and fascism. In its 9 years in power the current ruling dispensation has been ripping and poking the delicate seams that hold India together trying to remake it into something that it has never been in its long history, a cultural monolith.  I have written about some of those attempts after Modi’s re-election here,  and here. They are unlikely to succeed at the task that has been attempted without success many a time in the subcontinent’s history but they can and will continue to inflict a lot of harm putting their ideology into action.

The damage will not just be to the minorities and the weakest sections of the society riven by differences of caste, class and language but also to the dominant castes that make up the base of the BJP.  By damage I mean death and destruction on a scale that will eclipse the partition of India. It may seem like hyperbole to you, it does to me even as I read back what I have just written. But we have seen this movie before and not that long ago. The party’s core ideology is that of fascism wearing a saffron garb.

India is not covered well in the US media when it is covered at all. Its politics is complex given the diversity of the nation. I have a unique perspective that many in the US media lack, I can read and am fluent in two Indian languages and follow many sources in those languages and not just the English language media. Also, I grew up in an India that was not dominated by the BJP.

Let me show you what I see. These stories are from the recent past.

Indian wrestlers being  manhandled by the police for protesting against a BJP elected Loksabha member and minister in the Union cabinet for sexual assault, Brij Bhushan Singh

The ongoing ethnic violence in the northeastern state of Manipur

And then you can tell me whether my sense of alarm is unnecessary. I remain hopeful that the opposition will be able to unite and good sense will prevail upon enough numbers of people by the time the 2024 general elections roll by. I want to bear witness to what the BJP-RSS is doing in my name. And I say this because they claim to speak for all Indians, including those in the diaspora especially if they are Hindu.

Follow along on my blog and on Twitter as I take you behind the scenes and give you a perspective about India its politics, history, past.   India faces one of its most important elections next year. This story is so much bigger than a mere state dinner or Modi or even the BJP.  It is the battle for the soul of India and what kind of India will we see in the next 75 years.

I am compiling a list of sources and the incidents in the last 9 years that has raised my sense of alarm regarding India under BJP rule.

Sunday Afternoon Open Thread

Maybe it’s the heat, but I haven’t felt much like working this week, mostly just not in the mood. Yesterday afternoon I said fuck it, if I’m not going to get anything done I’m really gonna take the day off, got into my PJs, turned on the TV for the first time in 4 or 5 weeks, and snuggled with my guys on the daybed.

Unfortunately,  “sorry, I just didn’t feel like working this week” would probably not go over well with my clients, so I need to get myself in gear and spend most of today working.

But I can share a couple of photos on an open thread, at least!   You guys have mostly seen Tucker and Henry, so I’ll share these here before I get hit with some equal time lawsuit brought for the kitties by some low-life attorney whose standards won’t allow him to represent the former guy.  Hey, even attorneys gotta eat, am I right?

For kitty siblings, the two of them look nothing alike!

This is Miss Willow in her serious pose.  Maybe she was doing her best imitation of the bunny behind her on the table?

Here’s Mr. Bear on the porch.

The glass is supposed to be in the middle of the top of the cabinet.  But on the last day before the heat wave started, I had a friend over for some porch time with sour cherry mojitos, so I added the place mat so it wouldn’t be a big deal if we spilled while mixing and pouring.  Anyway, Mr. Bear has claimed that spot as his own, so of course the placemat stays.  In this house, we know what’s important.

Mr. Bear looks kind of raggedy in this photo, but who wants to brush the cat you’re hot and sticky?  I think we have one good day coming up this week, so I will brush him and then you can see how beautiful Mr. Bear really is.

Not generally a fan of Matthew Dowd, but credit where credit is due.

In the last 24 hours, we have Lance Armstrong lecturing people about sports fairness, Meghan McCain lecturing people about nepotism, GOP lecturing people about law and order, white evangelical leaders praising/worshiping Trump…we live in a world where many lack mirrors.

— Matthew Dowd (@matthewjdowd) June 25, 2023

I’d say we lack a hell of a lot more than mirrors – on the Republican / Crazy side.

Pretty sure we could spend all day adding more examples.  Lawless justices on the Supreme Court, anyone?

Sunday Morning Open Thread: Good Reads

This post is in: Activist Judges!, Excellent Links, LGBTQ Rights Are Human Rights

Sometimes these days I am very angry & sometimes I am very sad, but what keeps me going is my utter faith in the stupidity of my enemies. Thank you @slate and @jbryanlowder for letting me vent my rigorous, historically-based queer indifference & contempt https://t.co/hHbHbt94Vk

— Hugh Ryan (@Hugh_Ryan) June 23, 2023

It’s easy for those of us who can at least pass for ‘normal’ to say, but I do think Mr. Ryan has a point:

Perhaps you have noticed, of late, that society is “collapsing.” That the incoherent babbling of the vicious and insane now dominates prime-time news and every corner of the internet. That both queer acceptance and anti-queer backlash seem to be proliferating in ways that should be impossible, or at the very least should cancel each other out, but are instead turning America into a patchwork quilt of homophobic hellholes and sanctuary jurisdictions, like a thin rainbow sheen floating on a dirty puddle. And that rainbow? It has colors you’ve never noticed before, representing identities you’ve never heard of. Look closely; you might even see yourself reflected in it—at least until some jackbooted mouth-breather stomps through it on his way to protest Disney, or drag queens, or his own children, who have long since disowned him.

I sound flip, I know—a touch indifferent to all that unpleasantness. Forgive me: I came of age on a steady diet of bar queens quoting Joan Crawford while they took their triple-drug cocktails. They showed me that indifference has long been a kind of queer armor. The only defense when you can’t stop them from hitting you is to never let them see it hurt (then kick ’em in the balls when they get winded). These days, however, my indifference is of a different kind: less aesthetic, more practical. Don’t misunderstand: I’m not at all indifferent to the terrible suffering the right is causing for queer people, especially trans people and young people and queer people of color, and those who are all of the above. Quite the contrary. It’s just that I know, in my heart of hearts, that our enemies are stupid, and they will fail.

Let me explain. It’s my position as a queer historian that’s shaped my indifference, and drawing on that background, I’m here to tell you two things. First, you’re not crazy. The war for our future is all around us, and it will get worse. We are living in Weimar America (think Cabaret, but without Liza). There is no off-ramp coming. Many people want to exterminate queer communities, or drive us far enough underground that it’s functionally the same; vastly more people don’t really care but are willing to go along if promised some small measure of security or a return to an imagined time when things were better, whiter, more heterosexual. Radical centrists seem to have taken Martin Luther King’s words on the white moderate—the “ally” who is “more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice,” “who constantly says ‘I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can’t agree with your methods of direct action’ ”—as an instructional guide rather than a warning. And reading the news is like looking into the maw of Pandora’s box: I’m surprised daily by the innovative cruelties that fascists, the fascist-adjacent, and Republicans in general come up with.

Second thing you should know? Despite all of that, they are going to lose—they have, actually, lost already, irrevocably and permanently. Just as they did last time. This is what I mean by indifference…

Terrible things are happening, and will continue to happen, to particular individuals — and it is very much our task to fight as many of these terrible things as we can. But just as people didn’t accept the Dobbs decision and immediately go back to a pre-Roe understanding of how abortion and contraception ‘should’ work, most people aren’t going to blindly accept the right wing’s frantic efforts to shove every human into one of two boxes, with a corresponding set of strictly-enforced boundaries. There is only so much toothpaste one can force back into the tube.

Sunday Morning Garden Chat: 19

Thank you, commentor Glidwrith:

I started taking photos of flowers I see on my one mile walk at lunchtime at work. I send the more interesting ones to my mom. These aren’t in my garden and I don’t know what most of them are, but I find it fascinating at the sheer variety of plants, if you just take the time to look.

The first [top] one is honeysuckle, and I know this is Texas privet.

Late Night Open Thread: We Are What We Pretend to Be…

… So we must be very careful what we pretend to be.”

Or at least (says someone who shares Vonnegut’s — and Abigal Adam’s, and Dostoyevsky’s — birthday) we should take a considered approach to how we choose to present ourselves. Between the Titan submersible and the Russian coup-or-whatever, I have done a certain amount of self-censorship this week, although perhaps not enough…

The thing about social media is that it has incomprehensibly quickly accelerated the number of social interactions people are having, and the speed with which these grooves get carved.

— The Fig Economy (@figgityfigs) June 21, 2023

And anyway this whole thing misses the point entirely. He casts it as “the fascists won’t listen to us if we’re mean” when it’s really “you won’t get a critical mass of people on your side if you’re a dick all the time to everybody.”

— The Fig Economy (@figgityfigs) June 21, 2023

insofar as “eat the rich” is an effective slogan for socialism it is because the emphasis is on “you get to eat!” rather than “we killed the rich!” https://t.co/RccPlOVWCo
