Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Everyone is in a bubble, but some bubbles model reality far better than others!

It’s not hopeless, and we’re not helpless.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Another missed opportunity for Jamie Dimon to just shut the fuck up.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

“Let’s not pretend [Trump] wants to engage in high-minded discourse.”

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

The lights are all blinking red.

Glad to see john eastman going through some things.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

I really should read my own blog.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

The revolution will be supervised.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

The jury literally has a bell they can ring to force Trump to show up on command. Greatest thing ever!

An unpunished coup is a training exercise.

Excellent Read: Moms for ‘Liberty’, And Also…

The country's most unpleasant moms will not be cowed by people pointing out the big Hitler quote on their newsletter: https://t.co/JljZddTRIn

— Defector (@DefectorMedia) June 23, 2023

Thank you, Dave Roth, and Defector:

You know how it is. You are one of the 20 or so most unpleasant and aggrieved individuals in Hamilton County, Ind. As such, you have found yourself laying out the newsletter for your local chapter of Moms For Liberty, the fast-growing reactionary astroturf organization that grew to prominence by harnessing the power of screaming the word “groomer” at school board meetings and to which you, as an elite 0.01 percent unpleasant/aggrieved person, were naturally and perhaps inevitably drawn. Moms For Liberty claims 300 chapters in 45 states, and all around the country those chapters are doing something like the same mom-coded political actions, all of which proceed from the belief that, as a Moms For Liberty presentation once put it, “globalists, utopians, socialists, totalitarians and the UN are using public schools to undermine freedom and Christianity.”

That work takes various forms, none of which will be surprising to someone who follows the news or has met an upper-tier unpleasant suburban person. It has been, at different times, agitating against COVID-19 mask and vaccine mandates in schools, demanding that moms’ voices be heard on The Bathroom Issue, organizing against both overcrowded bookshelves in school libraries and the teachers’ unions dead-set on filling them, making sure that academic curricula do not contain a harmful quantum of uncomfortable stuff pertaining to the realities of American life or history, and challenging both the existence of trans kids and the woke depravities of The Walt Disney Co. This work plays out in school board meetings and local elections and Facebook threads in which activists talk about how prepared they are to “do a 1776 to” their chosen political enemies. Moms For Liberty is outwardly a grassroots organization of moms dedicated to ensuring that their children grow up to have precisely the same opinions that they do, but is associated with precisely the sort of impossibly rich, impenetrably secretive conservative political enterprises that these organizations are always associated with, and also the Florida Republican Party, and also in some instances the Proud Boys. Earlier this month, the Southern Poverty Law Center designated Moms For Liberty an extremist group.

Anyway, the newsletter that you will post on the Facebook page for the Hamilton County, Ind. chapter of Moms For Liberty is a part of that important work. But it isn’t finished yet. It is visually busy, but then your chapter has been busy as well; the issue contains news about “A class in Biblical Citizenship” and “Carmel Pride Festival funding” and a rundown of “Parent WINS,” and a message from the organization’s founders headlined “Moms For Liberty will not be intimidated by hate groups!” But there is some blank space above that, right next to the In This Issue bit. It doesn’t look right, and so you plug it with what is either a motivational quote or a cautionary one—”He alone, who OWNS the youth, GAINS the future”—and then you attribute it to its author, and then you publish it to Facebook, on Wednesday afternoon. Which might have been it, had the bloodthirsty click-chasing media types at The Indianapolis Star not noticed that the quote, which is commonly attributed to Adolf Hitler, was also in this instance attributed to Adolf Hitler, right there at the top of your Moms For Liberty newsletter. And then, of course, they make a big deal out of it…

Saturday Evening Open Thread: Nikki Haley Is Feeling Ignored

Suspect this is leading to a campaign-suspension announcement Real Soon Now. Because, if TFG *did* pick a female running mate, at this point it’s gonna be either Mad Majorie Taylor Greene or Elise ‘I Am Never Going Back to Upstate New York’ Stefanik…

🧵 Indian American perspective on Nikki Haley — why we don’t need to be desperate for her awful version of representation.

— Kaivan Shroff (@KaivanShroff) June 17, 2023

“I’m a woman, I’m a minority, and I’m the daughter of immigrants,” 2024 presidential contender Nikki Haley exclaimed at a less than successful CPAC appearance after launching her campaign. Despite decrying identity politics,

Haley has very clearly centered her ethnicity and gender on the campaign trail. In her launch video, she claims to fight bullies, noting “when you kick back it hurts them more if you’re wearing heels.” The announcement opens, “I was the proud daughter of Indian immigrants.

Not black. Not white. I was different.” Haley proceeds to spend the next three minutes bashing minority cultures around the world and denying America’s racist history. While some may celebrate Haley’s candidacy as a sign of progress,

as the grandson of Indian immigrants to the United States — Haley’s story is a cautionary tale. This is not the type of representation the Indian American community should be proud of.

Late Night Open Thread: Pedestrian Murder by Automobile

by Anne Laurie|  June 24, 20231:21 am| 95 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Technology, Riveted By The Sociological Significance Of It All

Pedestrian deaths have increased an astonishing 77% since 2010, compared to 25% for all other traffic fatalities.

GHSA’s new report explores this and other national and state data about drivers killing people on foot: https://t.co/E3RzCzkTO5 pic.twitter.com/l0iOP0AKfY

— GHSA (@GHSAHQ) June 22, 2023

GHSA's @russ_martin81 spoke with @7NewsDC's @John7News about our new projection that pedestrian deaths increased yet again in 2022, and how dangerous driving, inadequate infrastructure, and larger and heavier vehicles have contributed to this awful trend. https://t.co/kMjxEY8YHx

— GHSA (@GHSAHQ) June 23, 2023

As a Gen X / late Boomer in a state notorious for its lousy drivers, my personal observation: There are a lot of old people who shouldn’t be driving any longer, way too many of them are in ‘safer’ (for them, theoretically) SUVs where they can’t see what’s immediately in front of them, and they have no idea how much farther their mini-tank will skid if they slam on the brakes in a panic.

(And this is one of the factors which is least liable to public adjustment, because old people vote; they don’t like taxes and they love FREEDUMB. Truthfully, a lot of them *don’t* have any good alternatives to driving themselves — or they believe they don’t, because they grew up when cars were considered the best and most all-American form of transportation — and they’re the demographic for whom ‘eh, just call an Uber on your cell’ is least attractive. I’d love to see better governmental regulation of rideshare services, not to mention targeted mini-van and jitney patrols, but of course any such suggestions would require public spending… )

‘Rooting for Injuries’ Open Thread: Bill ‘Ever Lower’ Barr’s Ongoing Self-Exoneration Tour

by Anne Laurie|  June 23, 20239:15 pm| 41 Comments

This post is in: 2024 Primaries, Republican Venality, Republicans in Disarray!, Trump Crime Cartel

Bill Barr - STOCKPILE

(John Deering via GoComics.com)

Per The Hill, “Trump, Barr feud reaches fever pitch”:

… Barr has been among the most prominent conservatives or former Trump administration officials to publicly criticize their former boss’s behavior and vouch for the strength of the federal indictment against him, undercutting defenses offered up by Trump and his allies.

Barr has called special counsel Jack Smith’s indictment “damning,” dismissed Trump’s defenses as “absurd,” and compared Trump to a “defiant 9-year-old kid.”

In response, Trump has called Barr a “gutless pig,” a “RINO,” meaning Republican in Name Only, and a “coward,” reserving some of his harshest language for the man he once praised as “one of the most respected jurists in the country.”

“So nice to see that Sloppy, Low Energy RINO Bill Barr, gets loudly booed and shouted at everywhere he goes! He is sooo bad for America,” Trump wrote Tuesday on his Truth Social platform.

Barr served as Trump’s attorney general for two years before resigning in December 2020, when he first broke with Trump as the former president pushed claims that the 2020 election was rigged and fraudulent. Barr had declared that the Justice Department he oversaw at the time found no basis to claims of widespread voter fraud that led to Trump’s election loss.

In the past year in particular, Barr has emerged as an outspoken critic of his former boss, testifying before the House panel investigating the Jan. 6 riots at the Capitol and becoming one of the most outspoken Republicans regarding the seriousness of the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago last August to retrieve classified documents from Trump’s time in the White House…

“I think Barr is trying to cleanse himself of his Trump association, which is not likely to work with anyone who paid attention to what he did for Trump as AG,” said Alan Morrison, a law professor at George Washington University. “I also think that he is trying to get Republicans to move away from Trump as the best means of taking the White House in 2024.”…

Pretty much!

Bill Barr says classified documents case against Trump “entirely of his own making” https://t.co/5ZRQqJOEUN

— Axios (@axios) June 19, 2023

… What he’s saying: “He had no right to those documents,” the former Trump administration official told CBS. “The government tried for over a year, quietly and with respect, to get them back, which was essential that they do, and he jerked them around. And he had no legal basis for keeping them.”

– “But beyond that, when he faced his subpoena, he didn’t raise any legal arguments. He engaged in a course of deceitful conduct, according to the indictment. That was a clear crime if those allegations are true, and was outrageous,” added Barr on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”…

Yes, but: “I don’t like the idea of a former president serving time in prison,” he said.…
