Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

“woke” is the new caravan.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Second rate reporter says what?

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you do not.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

All hail the time of the bunny!

Usually wrong but never in doubt

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

They have pieces of shit.  Dangerous excuses for human beings.

It’s awful enough that someone would say all of this. But who listens to that and think “ooh, I want to see those people in power again?”

These people would have literally voted for Hitler.

Well, the FNYT’s editorial this morning outlines all the ways that Trump is our Hitler. Lots of words about the danger we face, but not a word about how to defeat the danger. I think one step would be for the “paper of record” to print one article a day under a blaring headline, recounting the many misdeeds and lies of his administration. Interview his former cabinet members, his former chiefs of staff. Interview John effing Bolton. Focus on his use of a personal cell phone, his theft of government secrets, his wooing of autocrats. I could go on, but my blood pressure is rising with each memory of his maladministration.

And in more evidence for the theme of this thread (the worst people):

Law Student Accused of Beheading Girlfriend Was Touted as ‘Victim’ of #MeToo by Trump Admin

In 2013, Joseph Roberts was accused of verbal and online sexual harassment and suspended from Savannah State University. He claimed he was suspended from school and “denied due process.”

Five years later, he’d go on to share his story with Betsy DeVos, then former President Donald Trump’s Secretary of Education, as an advocate for men who were wrongfully accused of sexual misconduct on college campuses.

In 2020, Roberts appeared on YouTube’s The Exceptional Conservative Show, where he recalled the day he was expelled from campus after three unidentified female students reported him.

    . . .

More than a decade later, Roberts, 42, was arrested on Sept. 7 in a separate incident for the gruesome death of his girlfriend, Rachel Imani Buckner, a recent law school grad whose dismembered body was discovered wrapped in plastic with duct tape along the shore in California’s Alameda County.

“Joseph’s DNA was on the tape that wrapped her body, which meant he was aware she was dead, he was aware she was dismembered,” Robert Hansen, a detective on the case, alleged. “He took an active role in wrapping her body, concealing it in plastic garbage bags.”

I still think we will find, when all the digging goes on after his death, that Trump is a Nazi in a literal ‘Heil Hitler’ sense.  He sees himself as Hitler’s natural heir, and his only differences in philosophy seem minor to Trump:  Trump hates blacks the most, and sees Jews as his model minority.  He believes all the anti-Semitic tropes, he just thinks greedy manipulators are a good thing.

Meanwhile, Trump talks at California Republicans.

Besides the four indictments Trump has to deal with — a first for a presidential candidate and former president — he confronts a $250 million civil fraud case that begins Monday in New York. But he showed no worries at the convention. He joked about setting a world record for indictments.

And he returned to vintage Trump on targeting California for criticism:
    ▪ California is a Marxist state run by communist Democrats.
    ▪ Illegal aliens are ruining the state.
    ▪ Wacky environmentalists have left the state suffering from droughts when there is more than enough water for cities and farms alike.

None of those things are true, but no matter to Trump. Nationally, Trump said “crazy” liberal policies are allowing men to transition into women’s sports. And law enforcement is wrongly being told to stand down by liberal leaders when crimes happen right before their eyes. If he wins the election, “We will immediately stop all the pillaging. If you rob a store, you can fully expect to be shot as you leave that day.”

The crowd gave that remark a standing ovation — never mind the idea contradicts professional policing and America’s legal process.

High gas prices are the result of leftist politicians. “When I am president, we will drill, baby, drill,” he said. Another ovation. Climate change is not mentioned. The cheering was again loud when he promised “not to give one penny” to any school with a mask or vaccine mandate.

Echoing claims he has repeatedly made, Trump said the election system in America is broken. Mail voting must end, he said, or else elections will remain corrupt. Never mind facts that show there has been no fraud found in the 60 cases he brought after the 2020 election.

They’re still having a good time over in the House Chamber. Punchbowl News editor Jake Sherman has been live tweeting the wrangling over another Continuing Resolution that would temporarily fund the federal government.

Sherman also reposted an item John Bresenan put up a few minutes ago:

[Democratic Caucus Chairman] Pete Aguilar says Dems need to read the GOP CR.

“Kevin McCarthy is not the most trustworthy person in this building, so I think it behooves us all to make sure what they say is in the bill is in the bill.”

“The former speaker, we’re told, has warned her colleagues — including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and some in his new leadership team — against rushing to bail out a man whom she argues can’t be trusted. Instead, she’s counseled, Democrats should let Republicans deal with the drama themselves.”

In this day and age, when SFB is trying to actually overthrow the government and install himself as lard master (not a mistake) and I’d bet that he would try then to actually overthrow the government that he “runs” and create a monarchy with him as the head. (I use head here as it is used in the military – a place to read and relieve one’s self) He is one completely warped, deranged, asshole and he delights in proving it 24 hrs a day. IOW he is one very deranged, narcissistic asshole. His entire picture of himself is one that no one of sound mind would think is in any way normal. We likely have all met someone, over our lifetimes that is/was a narcissistic asshole, but we were smart enough to run away as fast as possible. He is in it so deep that nothing would ever convince him that he is one sick bastard. His view of the world has him as the center of everything. Our view has him sitting in an asylum ward or a jail cell because at this stage in his life he is never going to change for the better. Elevating him to president told him that he is king of the world and after that nothing is ever going to change his narcissistic personality.  Except when he naturally stops breathing. His fans will hold him in the light because they can’t see that he is actually extremely bad for the human race, what with his greed, ignorance, and extremely screwed up (narcissistic) concept of himself.

@Shalimar: Milley is not being political.  He’s expressing precisely what the oath of office means.  That our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines do not swear allegiance to any person, but to the Constitution itself.  It just so happens he was serving under a 3-year old in a 77 year old body who took a shit on the oath he took upon assuming office.

@gene108: Those judges have some really strange sense of right and wrong. Makes me wonder how they treat the women in their lives.

Not to give the judge a pass.  But I really wonder about the prosecutor.

The guy not only destroyed evidence (while under an explicit court order to preserve it), but went to some fairly elaborate lengths to make sure he got it all.  IANAL, especially not a lawyer in Kansas.  But charging that as merely “interfering with law enforcement” seems pretty mild.  At minimum, where are contempt of court and obstruction of justice?  Arguably multiple counts, one for each action

Good Lord – he beat her until she lost consciousness, how much punishment does it take to do that?! Can’t believe he got probation. There’s no way this was a one-off. He’s beaten women before, and he will again. That fucker ought to be locked up for decades, to keep that from happening.

And if some quirk in the law somehow allowed probation, there was the matter of his destroying the evidence after being specifically told not to when he was released on bail. (Isn’t that obstruction of justice?) When crime is piled on top of crime, you can’t just let someone go.

Indigenous climate activist, artist, musician, and father Jacob Johns was shot in the chest this morning, Sept 28.2023, during a No Juan de Oñate statue peaceful protest in Tewa territory (more commonly known as Española, New Mexico). Jacob put his body between women and children when the shooter charged towards the altar. He was air-lifted to a hospital in Albuquerque, and had surgery. The shooter, who was wearing a red MAGA hat, is in custody of tribal police. We ask everyone to please pray with us that he survives this surgery and doctors have’ the strength and wisdom to help him. “

    More deranged rhetoric from Trump:

But in places where there is a true breakdown in the rule of law such as Oakland. Oh, Oakland is so bad, I will use every power at my disposal. But it’s not Oakland. It’s in Los Angeles. It’s all over. I mean, it’s terrible. It’s in places that you wouldn’t even believe.

But I will use every– everything I can, every single power at my disposal, including sending as many federal law enforcement assets as required to restore safe safety and peace.

You’ll have 300 young people who are not looking for a good future, walk into a store, a big department store, and just pillage it. And if you happen to be there when they’re there, they’ll knock the hell out of you and kill you in some cases.

And we will immediately stop all of the pillaging and theft. Very simply, if you rob a store, you can fully expect to be shot as you are leaving that store!

So where are we in the process? As best as I can tell, Rep. Katherine Clark asked for a 90-minute adjournment so that the Dems could read Qevin’s ‘clean’ 45-day CR (because for some odd reason, they don’t find him trustworthy), that request was denied, and the CR was defeated. And there’s no bill on the floor right now. Do I have that right?

@trollhattan: Oh, no *wonder* Doug Lamborn (GrOPer, CO CD-5) sent out an email this morning meeping about “Biden’s Broken Border Policies Endanger Americans”, which basically turned into a rant about drugs coming through California.

Here’s what I wrote in response:

Dear Mr Lamborn – with all due respect, you are an idiot. I would say, “how dare you come out on the last day before a government shutdown looms – a government shutdown that you and your fellow House Republican feces-flingers are ENTIRELY responsible for – and try to smear President Biden with some tired, ginned-up, anti-immigrant hysteria rather than taking care of your proper business – have you no shame?”

But as you and I both know, in order to BE a modern Republican, you have had to self-amputate any sense of shame or duty to actual governance long ago.

Still, I am going to say it: shame on you. If you’re really concerned about border security, get back to work and pass a budget, you tiresome hack.

I didn’t add: “PS, I’m not even a constituent of yours anymore, dude”, but I thought about it.
