Congratulations to Taylor Swift (Agent
9913)and the CIA on rigging the Super BowlRedshift
@David 🌈 ☘The Establishment☘🌈 Koch: And making it look so convincing! Excellent tradecraft!
Frankensteinbeck
Honestly, I was worried the MAGA would be insufferably obnoxious and energized if the KC lost. Taylor and Kelce seem nice, so I’m glad they’re happy.
gwangung
@Redshift: Well, they had to set it up by having them win two previous Super Bowls…chefs kiss
@Frankensteinbeck: Seriously. I want them to be HAPPY.
Almost Retired
We’ve been live texting the game with my 90 year old Mom and her friends. She lives in Kansas and was hosting a Super Bowl party for a bunch of women who were born at about the same time as the New Deal. When the game went into overtime and the fifth bottle of cheap Chardonnay was unscrewed the ladies’ texts became less about the game and more about what they would do with Mahomes and Kelce if they were younger.
Yarrow
@Frankensteinbeck: They seem like nice people who are happy together. Good for them. It’s bizarre how threatened MAGAts are by them.
Leto
That video, loooooooool!
@gwangung: playing the real long game here, with the two previous SB wins. *charliemurphyheadtapgif

Please indulge the timezone-crippled with a recap: how much camera time did Ms. Swift get?
HumboldtBlue
That game ended up as a classic.
The ads? Not so much.
Budweiser should have gone with more field goal kicking Clydesdales, Pfizer was a nice little slap to the face of maga and the willfully ignorant, but nothing stood out.
Leto
@Almost Retired: mom… Mom… MOM!!! Lol
Frankensteinbeck
@Joey Maloney:
I hear RFK Jr had an absolutely loony-tunes political ad, but I didn’t see it because my interest is summed up entirely by #3 above.
dmsilev
@David 🌈 ☘The Establishment☘🌈 Koch: Truly one of the great spycraft feats of the modern era.
Leto
@Joey Maloney: total? Idk, maybe 2 mins tops? Maybe? They’d flash over to her for like 5 sec, and you’d see her, Blake Lively, one time Lana Del Rey (singer), or Cinammon Ice (another singer)… but they also showed some of the other stars who were at the game so…
2liberal
Check joe bidens nitter feed. He admitted it!
Leto
@Frankensteinbeck: that’s one of the better ways to describe it.
Leto
@2liberal: Just like we drew it up.– Dark Brandon cannot be stopped!
gwangung
@Leto: I mean, the Super Bowl ALWAYS attracts superstars from other entertainment fields. If one of them is dating a player, it’s just gonna be natural to switch to her multiple times.
Jackie
@Leto: Go Dark Brandon!!!
Barbara
@Frankensteinbeck: It was a pastiche of JFK ads from 1960. It didn’t even say RFK’s first name so more than a few people might wonder what that was all about.
Ohio Mom
@Frankensteinbeck: It’s easy enough to find on YouTube.
I was four years old when the first version, for JFK, ran. Not surprisingly, I had no memory of it and seeing it again jogged nothing.
I did enjoy seeing it now as a historical artifact. It’s surprising how primitive and dumb early TV commercials were.
moonbat
@Almost Retired: Sounds like your mom would be fun to hang with! lol
Leto
@gwangung: One of the, if not THE, most popular singers currently on the planet, who’s also dating a premier player on one of the teams. Nope, can’t ever turn the camera that way…
“I just wanna watch my football, with the big sweaty men rolling around on the ground with each other, giving each other ‘Good game’ pats on the rear… WHY CAN’T YOU LET ME JUST SEE THAT?!?!?” -MAGA Chuds

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
that is all, off to bed!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Chetan Murthy
It’s all too hilarious. The MAGAts “worked themselves into a shoot”. Now they’re gonna spend a few days bein’ butthurt. It’ll be glorious.
Leto
@Ohio Mom: shows how TV was still an emerging format, but also there were a lot more regulations (eeewwwwww) with early television. Ofc, Reagan helped end that. There’s a really good book detailing the end of regulation and the advancement of product placement TV that happened in the 80s. Specifically in regard to children’s toys/cartoons.
But eternal, fuck Reagan.

Hoisting from the dead thread below, the best commercial was the bad ass stylish abuelas, Dina and Mita! https://youtu.be/qQJyZseER6I?
Yutsano
With any luck this will knock off the “Biden is senile” smear from the news cycle.
Frankensteinbeck
@Leto:
I don’t know the details, but I’ve heard that the stock regulations that created the vulture capitalism Hell we’re in are Reagan creations.
EDIT – @laura:
Ha! I love badass grannies. Badass grannies and little girls with oversized weapons, the two top action aesthetics.
Leto
@Frankensteinbeck: honestly, would not doubt it. So much of our dysfunction is rooted in that era of “government is the problem” style governance. We’re seeing it on steroids here.
@laura: I commented on your comment downstairs, but while Jenna Ortega was the teaser, the abuela’s stole the show! :)
brendancalling
I’d have more to say but thanks to Taytay and Mr. Pfizer, I just became transgender and now I have to marry a box turtle. THANKS A LOT, CHIEFS.
Q told me not to watch, but did I listen? Now who’s sorry? Me, That’s who. Now I gotta eat meal worms and figure out how to consummate marriage with a turtle.

@Ohio Mom
Tune the WABAC machine to 1952….
Leto
Breaking news! We found out what was said at half time to motivate the Chiefs! Greatest motivational speech in history!
randy khan
@Joey Maloney:
By my rough count, they showed her 8 times during the game, plus once in the brief wrap up before the postgame show and 5 more times during and after the trophy ceremony, including a longish bit when she and Kelce met on the field and smooched. If I heard right, one of the things she said to him was “Oh. My. God.” (Also, one of the postgame show talking heads, during that clip, talked about how sweet it was, something I never expected to hear during a Super Bowl broadcast.)
Jay
“So MAGgAt, show me on the doll where the Superbowl touched you.”,,,,,,,,,
Jackie
@Leto: 😂🤣😂
And it worked! I’m so going to enjoy watching the political news in the morning!

The JFK ad. It’s like his advisors told him to do the obvious and really lean in to the Kennedy Family thing and he leaned in so hard he fell over.

@laura:
That’s fantastic.

I guess I was should have been rooting for 49ers seeing as I am literally here now and movin here in oh about a week’s time (Found an apartment BTW!!), but really I was only there for the Usher concert.
Once that was over I was done watching, tbh.
So congrats to winners I guess.
I did see the RFK Jr ad, and it was SMH…I hope his uncle and daddy haunts him for the rest of his days, cause what da hell was that? I understand it was a PAC suportting him…
ETA: Apparently he’s saying “he” had no idea about the ad in response to his cousin Bobby Shriver and “apologized” for any upset…ugh

The RFK Jr commercial scanned as a Simpsons parody bit of Mad Men era political advertising.

@randy khan: Chris Kluwe on Blue Sky was keeping track, and it was 12, but C’mon….this is such an obvious thing to do that even first quarter HIGH SCHOOL journalism students know what to do (and sports journalists, by and large, know their stuff, unlike their national politics brethren…..)

That, and more proof that Dark. Brandon. Is. King.

@HumboldtBlue: Those ads were mostly all terrible. Like there used to be some really clever ads and…these were mostly all misfires. It’s like they hired PR people from…nevermind. ;-)
Shalimar
@lamh36: Yeah, sure. He had no idea they were going to make that ad. Also, it was the pinned tweet on his twitter account before the game was even over. Asshole.
wjca
Not to worry. I’ve been here since Y.A. Tittle was the 49ers QB, and even I leaned towards KC this time.
Rusty
@2liberal: Watching the right melt down over Biden’s post is epic. Elon responded, libsofticktok responded, and more, they are all blowing a fuse. This may be one of the greatest acts of trolling. It’s art!!

@lamh36: CONGRATS on finding an apartment!!! And good luck with Moving Hell. Doesn’t matter if it’s across the street or across the country, it’s always horrible. Best wishes to you.
This afternoon, Mr S and I went to the place (in San Diego) we knew didn’t have any TVs. And, well they close at 8, technically, and by 6 tonight everybody else was gone, so the 2 guys in the back were streaming the SB. And they were both mildly cheering for the Niners. But when I pointed out to M that if KC won, it would drive the Magats insane, he just smiled, and told J, so I think they were both ok with the outcome.
dirge
Yes, and changes in corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions. But don’t underestimate the impact of the capital gains tax cut (pushed by republicans, signed by Clinton), which pulled a lot of money into the stock market contemporaneously with the dot-com bubble and the advent of amateur day trading. That got a lot of people identifying with the interests of their (tax advantaged, successful until suddenly they weren’t) stockholding selves more than with their (powerless, abused) wage earning selves, which interests are generally opposed.
Hoppie
@wjca: Subtext is important, indeed. But what if Joe resigned and Kamala nominated Taylor S as VP successor…. Inquiring minds and all that.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@dirge:
Is this a ding against 401ks/IRAs and passive index investing?
Gretchen
Daughter wasn’t sure she wanted the Chiefs to win because now the schools are closed for the big Wednesday parade and there have been so many days off already. We’re all wondering if Taylor will be in the parade. Surely on Valentines Day?
laura
Holy Toledo! After Beyonce’s super bowl commercial she dropped 2 country songs and they are amazing. Head’s will explode! I’m in awe. Jaw on floor. Stars in my eyes.
Hoppie
@Hoppie: ETA Ghod couldn’t decide between the fags and the wokes, and took until well into the overtime to pick! 21st century for the win!
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@Rusty:
What exactly are they saying?
Jay
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka):
Nope, ETrade and the like, and the shift to day trading. When the markets were running up, many daytraders were making on paper more money sitting at home, (or at work, but not their job), than they did in their jobs. All well and good while the markets were going up, up, up.
wjca
Well, since such an appointment must be approved by both houses of Congress, by the time it might be possible (i.e. the Democrats holding the Senate and taking the House) the age question would be moot.
dirge
Sort of, but not really. 401k dates to the late 70’s. Passive index investing has existed for a long time, but didn’t really take off until post-dot-com-bust. The capital gains cut indirectly pushed everybody’s 401k up, by pulling money into the market. Unclear how it affects the viability of passive funds, but it probably helps.
It’s a ding against doubling down on the existing public policy of replacing traditional defined benefit pensions with defined contribution schemes, and incentivizing everyone to send their money to Wall Street. A ding against using tax policy to tilt the playing field towards capital and against labor.
It’s not meant to be a ding against any individual who rationally evaluates those incentives and chooses to take advantage of them. In the current environment, 401ks and passive funds are good choices; they’re better choices than they’d be if we had better policies.
ETA: Also, what @Jay said.

How the 49ers losing Super Bowl LVIII to end their season sounded on 49ers radio
hotshoe
@laura:
Thanks for the link to the Oakland Museum — reminds me that it would be worth a special trip. I live a hundred miles away. When I used to live closer, I went all the time and I never got tired of it. The admission price is pretty steep nowadays, but there are lots of days/programs when it’s free or reduced price for folks who have to worry about the cost — and the photos make it clear that it’s more fabulous than ever.
As a general rule, I wouldn’t bother with whatever Special Exhibition is in the Great Hall. Use time for the entire floors of natural science, history, and permanent art collection.
Note: plan for a five-block walk from the museum to Oakland Chinatown (which has evolved into something of a cultural center for many Asian groups in the East Bay).
Last time I was in Oakland Chinatown was literally the day before Alameda County went into Covid lockdown, so I don’t know what all has changed since then. But I know there are so many different good things to eat, it would take a lifetime to try them all.

I thought San Francisco would win since they’ve had a stellar season but I’m good with the Chiefs winning since it pisses off MAGAts. I laughed out loud whenever the camera showed Taylor celebrating.
I know it’s early but I am looking forward to her endorsing President Biden. Heads will explode. 😂 😂 😂

Pfft. Within minutes of the winning touchdown political editors were having a Teams meeting to decide whether they should push stories in a “Biden insiders hope Tra-Tay SB victory distracts from ‘geriatric memory’ scandal” direction or go full loop-de-loon with “Would a 21st century President have remembered to shield Taylor from the conspiracy theorists? Our panel decides.”
All hail the Holy Narrative.

@Patricia Kayden: I see you’ve adopted my old schtick of putting in an empty block quote box. (Old mistake that hasn’t happened lately.)

@lamh36: Congratulations on the apartment.
Oakland is a better choice for you than San Francisco because San Francisco is really cold for anyone from a warm climate. Other than the occassional heat wave, the summer temperatures are rarely out of the seventies. And every evening when you get off work the cold damp fog is rolling in from the ocean.
