Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

There is one struggling party in US right now, and it’s not the Democrats.

Spilling the end game before they can coat it in frankl luntz-approved dogwhistles.

Dead end MAGA boomers crying about Talyor Swift being a Dem is my kind of music. Turn it up.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Everyone is in a bubble, but some bubbles model reality far better than others!

Biden: Oh no. We’ve upset Big Pharma again.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

I’m more Christian than these people and I’m an atheist.

This fight is for everything.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Who wouldn’t be honored by Jose Andres!!! The man behind the Masters menu? He’s feeding a hungry world!!! ⁦@livgolf_league⁩ #livbroadcast https://t.co/Zl5D30PyYp

— kathleen sullivan (@kathleennewsie) April 6, 2024

I follow @CleanObserver for his political takes, and this was a lovely bonus. From Golf, “The man behind the Masters menu? He’s feeding a hungry world”:

… SOMETIME IN THE WINTER OF 2016, José Andrés’ phone rang.

It was Sergio Garcia.

As almost every story involving José starts, somebody needed help. Garcia had been an excellent professional golfer, achieving fabulous wealth and international fame, but on the eve of his 34th birthday, Garcia still had holes in his resume. With 20 pro victories but no major wins in 73 attempts, his legacy hung dangerously in the balance between historically good and quickly forgotten.

“He called me out of the blue,” José remembers, his eyes widening. “He had this … energy.”

The request was formally a job offer: Garcia needed an in-house chef for Masters week, and he could think of no one better suited to run his kitchen than the best chef he knew, José.

Trouble was, José was already booked solid. He was busy trying to feed the world. And feeding the world doesn’t necessarily allow for a week of flipping omelets at a rental home in northeast Georgia, as Andrés tried to explain…

Garcia was relentless, and soon it became clear that he really did need José…

… And you’ll have to click through to find out what that involved. C’mon, it’s a great read!

JOSÉ IS EVERYWHERE, which is perhaps why his phone never stops ringing.

On line one is the José you think you know — the celebrity chef. From up close, the machine is dizzying…

But it’s the José on line three that you really should meet. José, the savior. The guy who’s trying to feed the hungry and save the world. He’s not the guy I’m expecting on the morning we play golf, but it’s not his benevolence nor his confidence that surprises me.

It’s just that before I met José, I was pretty sure nobody could actually save the world.

Now I’m not…

José wasn’t sure what to expect when he founded the non-profit World Central Kitchen in 2010, but the last 15 years have proven it to be nothing less than his life’s purpose. His goal is refreshingly (and almost biblically) benevolent: To feed the hungry. And it doesn’t take long to realize this is by far the most revealing and foolish of his pursuits, as his buddy David Chow jokes plainly.

“Just think about how good you’d be at the important things in life, like golf,” David tells José. “…if you weren’t so busy trying to save the world.”…

I just hope commentor Raven sees this (if only so he’ll forgive me for some of my previous football coverage).

      @Raven: Speaking of:

You would think four major titles and 38 professional victories would be all the validation McIlroy needs, but here we are. Otherwise, McIlroy’s plan is to take it slow, and try to enjoy himself. “If I cast my mind back to 18-year-old Rory driving down Magnolia Lane for the first time, how did I feel, and I think you have to try to go back to just be grateful that you can be a part of this tournament, and that you get to compete in it every year.

“Thankfully, I’ve improved a bit since my first start here, and I feel like I’ve got all the tools to do well this week. But, again, I think one of the most important things is to enjoy it and smell the – I guess not the roses – the azaleas along the way.”

Good morning everyone. Final update on hubby – he’s almost back to how he was before this whole ordeal began. I’m convinced he was not ready to come home from the hospital the first time, even though all the numbers said he was OK. He will go places with me again without any problem or argument, and I got him to take a shower on Sunday, which is a major achievement! I’ve gotten some good ideas from the physical therapist and the nurse – the PT told me to get some ice cream and make shakes with those protein drinks. I got some low carb ice cream and tried it, and it worked great! We have an appointment with the social worker next week to talk about our options for home care. I feel like I have a good direction now. I also learned that you need to be insistent when the nurse ignores you. He told me “these are his new meds”, and I said “but he already takes those meds”. Turns out the doctor had reduced the dosages (and discontinued another med completely) but didn’t tell me that!!! I guess I was supposed to just figure it all out from the discharge papers. Now they might be taking him off the BP meds altogether, which is weird because he’s had high blood pressure as long as I can remember. In fact, he used to almost radiate heat.

I went to see the VA liaison – it’s a state-funded office where they help you fill out all the paperwork. Turns out that because he was a “boots on the ground” Vietnam vet he might be due some compensation if they decide he has a service connected condition or conditions. It’s part of the PACT Act, passed in 2022 (thanks Democrats and Joe Biden!). I think we got a letter about it a while ago, but I ignored it. Guess I shouldn’t have.  Raven, I don’t know if you’ve looked into this but you might be eligible too.

Although my beloved grandfather (childhood father figure after divorce) was an avid golfer who used to jokingly opine that we’re related to Curtis Strange (same last name), I cannot find within me any love for the game in no small part due to That Fucking Guy.  Gramps used to take me to Aronimink where he’d give me lessons on putting and golf in general, cherished memories but now overshadowed by that cheater who “wins” his own tourneys. I now live on the edge of a golf course and every time I’m outside it’s front and center.  Ugh. The little carts, the overdressed “upper crust” players, the blaring horn when storms approach, it’s all ruined my former pleasant associations.  Bah!  I say BAH

Thanks everyone, and yes it’s quite a relief to know that he’ll go to his doctor’s appointments now without any problem. Now I know that if he starts to get like that (combative and saying “leave me alone) there might be something wrong. ETA -I’ll feel even better after I get the cameras installed (I think that’s going to happen on Monday) and we finally have a plan going forward for him (and me).

On another note, did anyone here send me a friend request on FB? I have one from someone who is a real person, but I don’t recognize the name. It’s not one of those fake requests from someone who has no friends.

Shaddup, haters! Golf is fun as long as you don’t take your game too seriously. What other “sport” allows you to ride around in a cart drinking beer half the day? Also, golf courses are great for birdwatching. Yes, the peanut butter-faced clown plays golf, but he’s the one who sucks, not golf! That fucker has ruined too many other innocuous things (red ballcaps, for example). He doesn’t get to ruin golf too.

We’ve lived on a pleasant golf course for 15 years now after bugging out of chaotic NoVA to escape that rat race. Never had the slightest urge to play the game. Wife enjoyed it until it aggravated her arthritis. I remember one of our firsts visits to the country club and encountering a gaggle of middle-aged Republican women who were complaining, “Why does there have to be a Miss Black America contest?” I wondered if that was something that kept them awake at night.

@Omnes Omnibus: I have a nephew-in-law who was run over by a golf cart at a company event. It was a freak accident, someone lost control of the cart and it careened down the hill right into him. He’s been dealing with it for almost two years; he has a surgery scheduled in August. It hurt his leg and foot.

Tall tales but no dessert: the storyteller of Karachi and his ice-cream cart library

Pedalling down a narrow alleyway in Karachi’s crowded Lyari Town, Saira Bano slows as she passes a group of children sitting on the ground, listening to a man reading aloud from a book. The eight-year-old gets off her bike, slips off her sandals, and sits on the mat at the back.

She has already heard the story from Mohammad Noman, who is entertaining more than a dozen children with the tale of Noori, an insecure yellow parrot. “I don’t mind listening to it again,” says Saira. “He’s so funny.”

Noman, 23, is spending two weeks in Lyari pedalling an old ice-cream cart through its lanes, stopping to read his stories and leaving behind books for the children to borrow.

Golf is one of the sports where I don’t understand the spectators. You stand by the seventh hole all day, watching a couple dozen people take their putts at 20-minute intervals. Meanwhile the people watching on TV are seeing all the action, such as it is.

Olympic bobsledding spectators take the gold in that category, though. Every fifteen minutes a sled blurs past you in less than two seconds, and you’re cold.

I believe this will get you another timeout, to be served consecutively.  But I will check with John on that.

If the timeout is just for last night, you’ll be unable to comment for less than a week.  If John decides this second one just now to Omnes also violates the policy, that one will get you a one-month timeout.

If they are consecutive, that will be a 5-week timeout.

I haven’t been good on golf since I was learning to fly in the 1980s.   Doing touch-and-goes.  There was a golf course just past the end of the runway.  Coming in to land, and suddenly there’s a golf ball in front of me.  Came thru the prop unscathed.  Punched a hole in the windshield.  It was on course for my right eye, but I managed to jerk aside, so it only took off my headphones.  Somehow managed to land smoothly.

I still have the golf ball (it’s a range ball) on a little holder on my desk.

Weaselberg sentenced: five months.  Should have been five years IMO.

In agreeing to a five-month sentence, prosecutors cited Weisselberg’s age and willingness to admit wrongdoing. In New York, perjury is a felony punishable by up to seven years in prison. Prosecutors promised not to prosecute Weisselberg for other crimes he might have committed in connection with his Trump Organization employment.

He didn’t go into the reserves immediately – he tried to get in a couple of years after he was RIF’d. He was pretty bitter about it too. He wanted to be in the reserves long enough to qualify for the retirement. If he had gone into the reserves straight from the Army it would have been fine regardless of whether he had high blood pressure or not.

Golf is kind of amazing. It’s one of those sports where you can stink at it and still have a lot of fun if you have the right mindset. You can have a terrible round and then on one of the last holes hit a perfect drive that goes exactly where you wanted it to, feels great when you hit it, makes a great sound and all you want to do is come back the next day. (Isn’t this what heroin is supposed to be like? always chasing the perfect high?)

I refuse to let TFG ruin it. even if I hardly ever play any longer.

      @OzarkHillbilly:

In high school my brother and his best friend had a nocturnal ball salvage operation that was quite lucrative. They sold them to golfers in bags of six and sorted them so that no one bag got all gems or all clunkers. Helped with the “sight unseen” and “no returns” policies.

@Betty Cracker: I always tell people it doesn’t matter that much if you’re bad as long as you don’t play slow. what makes people crazy is when someone spends a week lining up every shot, taking 9 practice swings, re-thinking their club selection, checking the wind again, and then duffs it 20 yards. and then does that again and again. You’re not in a tournament; just step up and hit!

I gotta make time to play a round or three this year.

Talk of golf prompted a ticker check and it looks like Trump’s bogus stock is down another nearly 9% today.  So far.

It would appear that my thoughts and prayers haven’t yet borne fruit because it still has at least some value, on paper.

@Betty Cracker: Generally, I get kind of bored by about the 8th hole.  When I was a student in Athens we used to go to nearby golf course that, while kind of flat and featureless, was arranged in a hub and spoke manner such that every other tee was near the clubhouse, thus allowing you to replenish your beer at regular intervals.  If that wasn’t frequent enough, they had young women driving around in carts equipped with coolers to meet your refreshment needs.

@Paul in KY: I’m sure. And the different pancake houses I want to breakfast at before my miniature golf rounds are all the same too.

Still my dream, though. I sometimes think I have a boring life.

      Miniature golf, sure.

      Regular golf, oh hell no.
