Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Fani Willis claps back at Trump chihuahua, Jim Jordan.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

The jury literally has a bell they can ring to force Trump to show up on command. Greatest thing ever!

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

If West Virginia and San Francisco had a love child.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

It’s not hopeless, and we’re not helpless.

Everybody saw this coming.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

The current Supreme Court is a rogue court. Very dangerous.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Somebody needs to explain to DeSantis that nobody needs to do anything to make him look bad.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

2000 Mules, book and movie, removed from distribution. By convicted felon Dinesh D’Souza.

Which is two more sentences than it deserved in the first place.

@p.a.: It’s also an indicator of how much white collar crime wasn’t prosecuted because of Republican influence on funding and staffing.

And look what happened. We have companies that can’t make movies people want to watch, can’t make food people are supposed to eat, and can’t tell us anything that is actually going on.

Declare them redundant! We have better substitutes now.

      https://www.msn.com/en-us/music/news/a-glorious-choral-hymn-about-gritty-premieres-this-weekend/ar-BB1nNzyF

“The earnest hymn-like quality of the song contrasts ridiculously with phrases like “a ghastly empty-eyed Muppet with a Delco beard” and “Sleep with one eye open tonight, bird.”

      Dunphy’s tune begins:

      “At first, I was disgusted.

I was like, what the hell is this?

      Why did you do this?

      Why is this a thing?

It was like an hour after that

I fell in love with him.”

About the Brits and their passports being checked, Great Britain was never in the Schengen Area, so Brits had to have passports checked when entering France before Brexit. Although, before Brexit, there might have been a way to have a French agent in GB to do the checking before the paratroopers got on the aircraft.

@Ceci n est pas mon nym: oh I wish I could help with that!  I have many Antifa memes featuring Gritty!  Alas, since I cannot post those, text will have to do.  Do you fit the description?

Helen Gym, council member at large, introduced the resolution, which runs to two pages and would be impossible to justly sum up here. So your humble reporter will just leave below a fairly representative quotation from its opening lines — and encourage you to read the whole thing:

“WHEREAS, Gritty has been described as a 7-foot tall orange hellion, a fuzzy eldritch horror, a ghastly empty-eyed Muppet with a Delco beard, a cross of Snuffleupagus and Oscar the Grouch, a deranged orange lunatic, an acid trip of a mascot, a shaggy orange Wookiee-esque grotesquerie, a non-binary leftist icon, an orange menace, a raging id, and an antihero. He has been characterized as huggable but also potentially insurrectionary, ridiculous, horrifying, unsettling, and absurd; and …”

      It goes on.

After a round of scattered applause and laughter rippled the chamber, Jones was told that he could clarify his position. “I have nightmares,” he noted.

Teamwork makes the dream work!  💙😍

Less than six months after launching a probe in the U.S. Senate into “the outrageously high prices” that asthma patients and others across the country pay for inhalers, Sen. Bernie Sanders celebrated the official start of a new program by one of the largest makers in the industry on Saturday to cap out of pocket costs at $35.

      …

The committee’s work led by Sanders triggered agreement from other large makers, namely AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline, to initiate affordability programs as well.

“We look forward to AstraZeneca moving in the same direction—applying its $35 cap automatically at the pharmacy counter—in the next few weeks, and to GlaxoSmithKline following suit in the coming months,” Sanders said Saturday. “We are waiting on word from Teva, the fourth major inhaler manufacturer, as to how they will proceed.”

In April, President Joe Biden hosted a gathering at the White House where he credited Sanders and the HELP committee for spearheading the effort that led to the pharmaceutical companies caving under the public scrutiny.

Referring to Musk’s fortune, Denholm added: “This is obviously not about the money. We all know Elon is one of the wealthiest people on the planet, and he would remain so even if Tesla were to renege on the commitment we made in 2018.”

Then what is it about?  Oh yeah, a “record”.  As if “Biggest Corporate Asshole On The Planet” wasn’t enough.  Note I said “corporate asshole”, lord knows that’s a heavily competitive field.

This was a touching story I read yesterday. American tank gunner who was involved in one of the most famous tank battles of WW2, met his German counterpart and together they both sought out the family of a civilian who died in the crossfire.

Even more digging and dishing!  WOO HOO 😍

When Cannon was nominated, she made less than $70K a year & her burger joint manager husband not much more. Yet 3 months after her nomination, he suddenly bought a home for nearly $800K before she was even confirmed. How was he able to do that & why has it not been reported?

      MORE DETAILS:

Amusing how illogical MAGA logic is. Cannon was nominated in June 2020 Her confirmation hearing was in July 2020 Her husband purchased the home in Aug 2020 She was confirmed in Nov 2020 How can someone get a loan on speculative income unless they knew it was in the pocket?

Happy with digging, but a couple making over $140K should be able to get a loan for an $800K house.  I don’t want fake scandals to crowd out real ones.

@OzarkHillbilly: For reference, 56 billion is close to Tesla’s total profit for the last four calendar years (2020-2023). I’ve seen comments comparing this to a bust-out or a pump-and-dump, in the end-phase when the fraudster is pulling out as much as they can before the scheme collapses.

@Baud: according to mortgage loan calculators (ugh math!), such a loan would have been pretty unlikely without an infusion of cash from somewhere, which is the point of this dig.

@TBone: It is unlikely that she made less than $70K in 2020.  She was an AUSA in the Southern District of FL.  She would have been hired as a GS-11 in 2013.  Even without a promotion in grade (unlikely), she would have been making more than that by 2020.

@Ken: No way the shareholders and board should let him loot the company.  But big corporate finance of giant public companies is weird.

I remember way back when Porsche’s profits were greater than their sales.

      How?

Playing with the stock market.  Their valuation was nuts.  There was grandios talk about them taking over VW, etc., etc.

Of course, it all came crashing down a few months/years later and VW took them over instead.

Yeah, the shareholders and the board should call Melon’s bluff and tell him to hit the road when he loses.

(I ass-u-me he wants the big payday to dump into his X and XAI and Xetc fiascos to try to keep the spinning plates in the air…)

      Cheers,
      Scott.

Just to add to what @Omnes Omnibus said:

As an Attorney, she’d have gotten $69,989 as her base salary as a GS-11/1 and $72,229 as a GS-11/2 in 2013.

      It’s likely she’d have been hired as a GS-11/2 or even a GS-11/3.

And here’s a story with a similar regret of unintended consequences by the Army Air Corps not resolved till years later.

It still chaps my hide that McGovern’s loss to Nixon is what brought about superdelegates. What it should have resulted in was the introspection over if you can’t get a guy as solid of character and no stranger to the horrors of war as George M, then the problem is your party’s messaging. The people backed someone actually worth a damn.
