While Trump and Roberts and Alito were lighting the Reichstag on fire, I spent the day blissfully ignorant riding on the tractor.
It was perfect weather- blue sky, 75 degrees, no humidity, and a nice breeze. Got two major fields cut. We line them on Wednesday then on Friday will do a 2.5″ cut. Whole lot of work for some kids to kick a ball, but at least they’re not… well, not what? Not like they can do any more fucking damage than the adults are right now.
I just love the time on the tractor. No one bothers me, no one fucks with me, I’m not checking and responding to emails, I have no decisions to make, and I feel about as free and unburdened as I can possibly be. Couple jugs of water and the noise cancelling earphones, and it’s 6-7 hours of complete peace. Listened to a bunch of classic rock today. Foreigner, Boston, Styx, that kind of stuff- stuff that was real big in the Ohio Valley in the early 80’s
When I am on the mower, with my headphones on, singing along to Rush or Peter Frampton at ear bleeding volumes, I feel like I am soaring as close as possible to peak whiteness. It takes me back 40 years. Just missing a lukewarm case of Mickey’s big mouths, a pack of camel lights, and a couple of loaded joints that will blow up at some point while you are smoking them because you invariably missed a couple seeds since it’s really hard to roll a joint on an 8-track in the front seat of a Dodge Colt while doing 65 on WV roads marked at 35 mph.
How the fuck are any of us still alive?
I’ve already unleashed most of my venom about the scotus decision on twitter. I just don’t have the patience for motherfuckers right now. Shit is all hands on deck. Again, I am a straight white dude in my 50’s who was baptized christian as a childd, and I will be fine in the upcoming Christian caliphate/Fourth Reich/Magadom. And I can not control how other people vote, but if Jewish Americans, Muslim Americans, and the youths want to not support Biden to teach him a lesson, there simply isn’t much I can do. Good luck drinking fracking water, breathing chemicals, and eating poison, and if you are lucky enough to make it, you better have saved some money because they are coming for social security, medicare, and medicaid. They are coming for it all. OSHA is dead, unions are gonna get it next, gay marriage, interracial marriage- it’s all on the fucking table.
I mentioned this on twitter and was immediately accused of “punching down.” Motherfucker, I am not punching anyone. I’m trying to get you to stop punching yourself in the dick and supporting the guy who didn’t fucking use Palestinian as a slur in the debate.
I just can’t with people. Politics is a god damned team sport.
I’m gonna load up a video game and destroy some whit.

Kids these days: Just try to tell them what it was like in the early ’70’s, when you had to be able to drive with your knee, pass a joint with one hand, and hold a beer in the other, all while trying to tune in some jams on the FM. My kids never had to do that, and wouldn’t even try.

I’m not a Christian, but I’m pretty fucking white and male. Not sure I’m going to be fine if the Supremes and the Rs and the Orange fans win. Not sure I want to be.
My parents lived through WWII in occupied Europe, each with their own coping strategies as fit their different backgrounds (Mom poorish; Dad son of a doctor who ran a hospital and likely could protect him some early in the war.) They raised me to worry about this.
So it seem like I owe it to them to take some risks to speak out, to protest and perhaps to get in trouble in a time when the court seems to say there are few limits to what the orange asshole can do if he is elected again.
I’m old. I will be dead before climate change takes the majority of the world it the Republicans get what they want. The regulatory decisions of the court, today and last week are in some ways even scarier than whether this particular asshole fails to get his legal comeuppance. I won’t be there for it, but maybe I’m actually more worried about that. It will take time to come back from whatever brink we are on and climate isn’t going to wait.
I’m going to stay away from most media for a bit. Calm down. Try to stay sane and then work on it one way or another this Summer and Fall.

@Ohio Mom: There is something so self-indulgent about this. In 2004 I pretty well knew that Bush was going to win, and he was certainly going to win in the state where I lived. So I traveled to where my mother lived and spent a lot of time canvassing neighborhoods. Kerry won that state (Pennsylvania) and even though I was bummed at the national result I was happy that I had helped make a positive difference.
In 2006, I was pretty sure George Allen was going to win but I still made phone calls and canvassed for James Webb, and by God, he ended up winning by the slimmest of margins.
My dad’s gestalt was, basically, that his life was the embodiment of an Escher drawing and there was no way out. I had to manually teach myself optimism not because I thought that everything would turn out okay, but because it is a necessary predicate for doing anything.

I recommend the 3-part PBS doc about disco for a good distraction. I came of age in that era (Class of ‘77, woot!) and I learned a lot. Plus, I appreciate the music more now. Not quite a Travelall, but my dad used to drive 80 mph on twisty New England roads in his ’60 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider. Top down, mom in the passenger seat (with a scarf over her hair, of course), kid sister sitting in her lap, and I’d sit on the transmission tunnel behind the stick shift. Then one night us kids went on an errand with dad, I was in the passenger seat (which had a seat belt at mom’s insistence) and sister was in my position. Sudden stop, dad’s arm went out, but not quite quick enough to keep sister from whacking her head on the dashboard. A few stitches and she was fine (you can still see the scar 64 years later). Dad, however, was not fine when he got home, the Alfa Romeo disappeared a week later and was replaced by a crappy new Chevy Nova with four seats, all equipped with the optional seat belts.

@artem1s: has it right. They will start with the most helpless marginalized groups. But work their way “up”; eventually, because there’s nobody else left, they will be rounding up and/or killing each other for not being fanatic enough or about the right obscure ideological details. Be too late for the rest of us, however.
Half a century ago, as an Air Force officer, I was required to qualify annually with my sidearm. I did. And haven’t fired a gun since. Nor ever felt the urge to own one. Still, I know which end the bullet comes out of. And I’m guessing it’s like riding a bicycle — it comes back to you pretty quick. Because, reluctantly, I’ve had to start considering the need for self defense. (Just not against the same Those People.)

@MagdaInBlack:
We called this a spodie. Usually done in a bucket but we did once do one in a large (new) garbage can. It takes a lot of cheap booze and fruit & juices to fill one of those things up! Let it soak for a day and it’s time to party with a LOT of people!

@eclare: the ref/s are just incompetent, and I can only hope they can level it. This is just ridiculous.

@eclare: “he did ‘the move’ on you? That’s my move! I invented that move!”
Jerry Stiller was the best.

@geg6: FWIW, Deborah Harry and one of the other members of Blondie loved disco. “Heart of Glass” was their disco tribute and they deliberately had it in their set list because they knew it would piss off the “too cool for disco” folks in the audience.

Did you see today that Ralphie is blaming Hillary for the Imperial Court’s decision today? That’s right, her.
Fucking croak already, Ralphie.

Gotta shoehorn in J & D Edwards for the grins.

@Sister Golden Bear: I believe today’s your birthday?
Happy Bannon’s in prison Birthday! 😁
Sister Golden Bear
@wjca: There’s definitely groups — like the disabled — who will be targeted first, but the war on trans people shows how the “working their way up” works. We got copies of internal discussions where the haters explicitly talked about targeting us trans people because we have the least political power, and then once they’d turned the public against us, they go back on the offensive against queer people.
Sister Golden Bear
@Jackie: Tomorrow actually, but Bannon having the DTs in prison was a great pre-birthday gift.

@Jackie
Ooh, it is? Have a happy, Sister Golden Bear!

@Sister Golden Bear: ♥️👍🏻😁

@Sister Golden Bear: The main thing holding them off from trans people is simply that you are so thin on the ground. Finding you, and rounding you up, will take work — and sloth is more their vibe. Easier to go after the homeless — visible, and tend to be found in groups (especially at night).
Not that it will slow them down long. But figure you get targeted third or fourth, rather than first. Praying it doesn’t come to that.
EDT And Happy Birthday!

@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): Thanks so much again for your input and concern though, it makes me, an ostensibly straight BIPOC, feel all the more better about the torrents of political battles ahead!
