Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Not all heroes wear capes.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

Bark louder, little dog.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

Let there be snark.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Open Thread: Yes, Repro Rights Are Human Rights

Speaking of Wisconsin, here’s a thread from the Chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party:

Tune out the noise. Focus on the stakes. If you want the freedom to make your own decisions about abortion, birth control, IUDs, or IVF in 2025, then you care what happens in Wisconsin in the next 127 days. 🧵

— Ben Wikler (@benwikler) June 30, 2024

It’s a comprehensive plan to end American freedom and democracy. Controlling women’s private medical decisions is one key piece of that.https://t.co/PyOr4f8USm

— Ben Wikler (@benwikler) June 30, 2024

This is likely just the start of their assault. We just saw Republican senators block a Democratic bill protecting access to contraception, and another protecting access to IVF. Many far-right groups are explicit that their goal is to end access to both.

— Ben Wikler (@benwikler) June 30, 2024

The Wisconsin legislature passed a law in 1849 that said “the willful killing of an unborn quick child” constituted felony manslaughter. That archaic language, from before the invention of modern medicine, put Wisconsin doctors at risk of prosecution.https://t.co/bpxWQS6101

— Ben Wikler (@benwikler) June 30, 2024

It took 15 months, but thanks to the efforts of WI AG Josh Kaul, in July 2023, a Dane County judge ruled that the pre-Civil War law does not prohibit abortions—allowing services to resume in September. A win for reproductive health rights in WI… for now. https://t.co/XnaxeYC222

— Ben Wikler (@benwikler) June 30, 2024

In 2016, Trump won Wisconsin by just 0.77% of the vote. We are a purple state, so razor-thin margins under 1% have decided who gets our 10 electoral votes in 4 of the last 6 elections.https://t.co/zjIs8TmkwS

— Ben Wikler (@benwikler) June 30, 2024

If Trump wins, he’ll intensify his assault on reproductive rights. He said women should face “punishment” for having abortions, supports letting states prosecute doctors and monitor women, and is “looking at” policies to restrict birth control. Believe him.

— Ben Wikler (@benwikler) June 30, 2024

In 2022—mere months after Dobbs—states like California, Vermont, and Michigan voted to protect abortion rights. But—surprise!—deep-red states like Kansas, Kentucky, and Montana voted to keep abortion legal, too.https://t.co/GBiLnho4SD

— Ben Wikler (@benwikler) June 30, 2024

Which brings us to right now.

Some Democrats are pulling out their hair, gnashing their teeth, wringing their hands.

Others are organizing.

Which kind do you want to be?

I was channel surfing sometime in 2016 when I came upon an interviewer asking Fat Bastard about abortion. It was clearly a subject he didn’t give a shit about until told it was of vital importance to the religious far-right. So he blurted out something about how the sluts “needed to be punished” and tried to move on.

Hang it around his neck and bury the asshole at the ballot box in November.

Remember that this election is all about Hair Furor’s massive threat to US democracy.

One manifestation of that is his carrying the standard for the American Taliban vis a vis abortion rights.  Everybody here knows that.

The Extreme Court handed us, unfortunately, a martyr for the cause, Roe v Wade, so we should use it like a martyr.  We should be putting some representation of that on every sign, banner, billboard, etc., and wave it around like we were Medieval French and the English just burned Joan of Arc at the stake.

    And GOTV.  Always GOTV.

The Leahy Law was bypassed by making the arms shipments to Israel grouped into a unit whose dollar amount was under that which would have had it apply. Was that because there was concern that such scrutiny might determine these munitions and war materials were used in violation of human rights? I recall an Arab-American being questioned about her “uncommitted” vote in the Michigan Democratic primary who stated that she did not feel she could put her own reproductive rights ahead of the lives of Palestinians in Gaza.

I remember when I first learned that Frederick Douglass declined to include women’s suffrage in his push for black suffrage and saw what a difficult decision that was for him worried that it might scuttle the change he sought to bring about.

Most the presidential races in my lifetime (1st national race vote was for Jimmy Carter) have been declared as too important to be a purist. Now is not the time. Maybe later. This seems to have brought us to a point where concerns about Shrubya seem quaint in comparison, though they still involve war crimes.

For better or worse (crazy to even put it in those terms), some people feel that being asked to turn a blind eye to complicity in genocide as a bridge too far. At least AIPAC will have the plausible deniability that it wasn’t Biden’s Israel stance whether one thought it was too little or too much that returned Trump to power.

Totally unrelated. I was going through today’s threads that are dead. I am pretty sure those sites that sell Forever Stamps at a discount are scams. I did a quick Google, plus I know someone who was taken by one of those sites awhile ago and posted on FB about them being counterfeit. She had bought from a site advertised on line

    Edited to add https://www.reddit.com/r/philately/comments/tzzw9b/is_selling_discounted_forever_stamps_a_scam/

@LanceThruster: Every refusal to vote for Biden is a vote for letting Israel “finish the job” as Trump has promised.  Every non-voter will be complicit in MORE weapons to Israel, and end to ANY hope of a US-supported Cease Fire and the spilling of MORE Palestinian blood.

OT, but we made it through June without any major fascist terror incidents at Pride events. I had feared that the crazies would be out considering all of the BS that MAGA have been spewing about trans people and all LBGTQ+ folks. I think this means that a lot of the would-be assholes are pinned down – in jail, being intercepted, worried about the FBI, etc. Anyway, just my positive thought for he day..

    @BeautifulPlumage:

We had some minor incidents leading up to our 50th Pride Parade starting when the head of the CO GOP said some whackadoodle anti-gay shit and the crazies responded by stealing flags and stuff.

This occurred in our ‘hood right up until the Parade but it was all minor.

It’s a far, far cry from back in 1979-80 when the Gay Rights group at CU-Boulder had an office on the ground floor of the student union with a window that was right along where most students walked.  They were constantly getting their windows smashed and of course nobody was ever charged.

Instead the following year, the school moved their office into the basement.  Saved money replacing the window 6 times a semester.

    Progress.  Progress.

It’s been clear to me for awhile that on election night we’re all going to be watching WI. If the election night map looks anything like 2020 WI will be a must win state for TCFG to take the EC. If Biden takes MN, PA, MI and WI, it’s game over – GA, AZ and NV would then become landslide territory. If by some miracle NC flips blue that also would mean game over for the convicted felon.
It’s all going to come down to GOTV in urban precincts in Milwaukee. Please let that orange asshole spend every weekend from now until the election pissing off the good people of Milwaukee.

Don’t worry. The sites which sell postcard stamps for a discount are selling old (as in, glue on the back) stamps with printed values on them, in pairs to make up a current postcard rate.

So for instance, in 2 weeks when rates go up to 56 cents for postcards, you might get a batch of 32 + 34 cent stamp pairs, for a few pennies’ discount off 56 cents.

It’s the big-discount offers that are a “tell” for scam sites. Thank you for warning us about those!

We need to work extra hard, but also start getting a lock on all the other state legislatures after we win the presidency. We will keep the presidency away from the GOP.

The forces that want to make this fascist only have a limited time – lot of people drunk on Fox News. But the newer generations are not on cable so hopefully we’ll start seeing grift numbers go down.
