Can I pre-freakout shit my pants, so I can avoid the rush?
Baud
@brantl:
I hope he starts talking about sharks.
SpaceUnit
When is this address scheduled to start?
hrprogressive
While I have stated multiple times I think the freakout over the debate has been overblown and calls for him to step aside are bad, if Biden doesn’t express some serious shit, and state that he will take steps in the coming days under this ruling to safeguard democracy…
Then I think a freakout would be well warranted.
This is a historical, awful moment.
He cannot just get up here and spout platitudes about voting and the rule of law.
As far as SCOTUS is concerned, those days are more or less dead, until further notice.
TaMara
@hrprogressive: Or, hear me out, he can make a measured and thoughtful response while they work out a solid way forward.
Knee-jerk gets us nowhere and a good leader knows that.
brantl
@hrprogressive: Lighten up, Francis.
hrprogressive
@TaMara:
A good leader needs to let their citizens know they will protect their “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”.
If a leader can’t elucidate such conviction, I’d question that leader’s fitness for the moment.
hrprogressive
@brantl:
The fate of the republic is literally at stake here, so no, I will not.
Baud
@hrprogressive:
You should just start questioning Biden’s fitness then. He’s never going to satisfy you.
Chris Johnson
He could come out, put on shades, and say ‘funny thing, I woke up this morning the President. But through no fault of my own, now I’m apparently King Brandon!”
hrprogressive
@Baud:
👍
Chris Johnson
Here he is, right on time
Starting right off with the ‘no kings’
Another Scott
https://www.whitehouse.gov/live/
He pretty much started on time!
Cheers,
Scott.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@hrprogressive:
What do you expect him to do? Nothing can be done legislatively at the moment. Do you want to hear him call for a new Voting Rights Act or something of the like if voters give Dems a trifecta? To pack the Court?
Chief Oshkosh
“My fellow Americans, I’m pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.”
I mean, why not go with a classic?
Baud
@Another Scott:
It’s a new Biden! Damage control!
hrprogressive
“Not even the supreme court”.
Fuck em. Round em up. They can’t stop you.
UncleEbeneezer
@brantl: Save your energy. We’re gonna need your help moving the goalposts on what Biden needs to do to earn our support.
Spoiler: it will be right over there, just beyond whatever he does.
cain
@Baud: He’s doing great!
cain
Actually, Biden can decide.. he has the power.
Chris Johnson
No lie told. I agree with everything Joe’s saying. He’s also taking it seriously, not playful in any way
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@hrprogressive:
Except Republican governors with their National Guard forces
hrprogressive
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka):
“Legislatively”?
I want him to use his newfound unlimited presidential power to fucking stop the Fascists that have infiltrated our government.
Omnes Omnibus
I think this a good speech. YMMV.
hrprogressive
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka):
He’s Commander in Chief of the best military in the world.
Chris Johnson
I believe Joe when he says that he’ll behave honorably. He dissents too.
He’s done. No quarter for hecklers (who even was there and what the fuck did they expect?). Now, I will return to my before-bed exercises and I’m gonna get some sleep. If y’all set the blog on fire, toast me a marshmallow. I’m quite happy with this Joe Biden, even if he’s King Biden (dissenting).
Not King Brandon… but this shit is serious, I agree with his basic seriousness here.
cain
and a final ‘fuck you’ to the press.
hrprogressive
“I won’t do anything with these new powers, but Donald Trump will. Go vote”
Yeah. Y’all better start prepping for shit to get bad.
David 🌈 ☘The Establishment☘🌈 Koch
did he wearing a tan suit?
UncleEbeneezer
@Chris Johnson: Bonus points if he sings one of the King George numbers from Hamilton.
UncleEbeneezer
Was Biden TOO STRONG, ALERT AN COHERENT?!!!
Baud
@UncleEbeneezer:
Haha.
Almost Retired
@Omnes Omnibus: My mileage doesn’t vary at all. I thought it was a very good speech too.
And now I have to turn off the TV because fucking Lawrence O’Donnell is already complaining that Biden should have pointed out that he didn’t pardon Hunter even though he could have.
TeezySkeezy
@brantl: Unnecessary.
Baud
@Almost Retired:
That’s dumb. Everyone knows he always could have done that. That had nothing to do with the supreme Court decision.
Betsy
Thanks so much for the link. I knew I would find it useful to come here.
TaMara
Hi y’all. Just a reminder please don’t feed the troll and that pie is very, very good.
Jeffro
THANK YOU – AGREE 110%
“This is un-American, completely undermines the rule of law and our democracy, and I will. not. have it. Donald Trump should have been dragged out of the White House in chains in the early hours of January 7th, 2021 and thrown into a dungeon for his crimes against our country…and so…now…although it’s a little late, it’s entirely deserved…with the ‘absolute immunity’ that the Supreme Court has just granted the executive branch…I hereby order the arrest and imprisonment of…
…do you get it yet, Chief Justice Roberts? Do you get it? Of course you don’t. But the American people will, and you’ll hear from them in November.
In the meantime, my Administration will continue to completely disregard each and every instance of this Court’s disastrous, dangerous, and destructive over-reach.”
Chris Johnson
I liked him echoing Sotomayor. He dissents too. I like that. That’s the guy I voted for.
He wants to be Washington II. Plagued with unwanted power and kingship, wise enough to go ‘fuck no’ and lay that crown the fuck DOWN.
Works for me. Let’s keep him. He could end up the greatest President ever if we can pull this off (I think we absolutely can, he’s giving the right kind of support)
Mike E
@hrprogressive: I read what you wrote as “Y’all better start prepping to shit the bed.”
Quinerly
@David 🌈 ☘The Establishment☘🌈 Koch:
Should have worn a vintage 10 year old one. I think we must have an open convention and force Gavin Newsome wear a tan suit. The world will be righted. Clearly, Biden needs to be replaced.
Almost Retired
@Baud: Exactly. Bad pundit! Bad!
Mousebumples
Let’s go, Dems!
If anyone has nervous energy tonight, Postcards to Voters has addresses for Stephanie Vanos in FL – running for school board.
TeezySkeezy
@hrprogressive: Don’t you like being tone policed in such an insultingly snide tone? Give em irony points at least.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@TeezySkeezy:
What hrprogressive was talking about would literally trigger a civil war
Mike E
@TeezySkeezy: I guess you’re the official tone cop, good for you!
Omnes Omnibus
@TeezySkeezy: Blow it out your ass. Is that better?
TaMara
@TeezySkeezy: How does go fuck yourself work for you?
Redshift
Mmm, pie!
MagdaInBlack
@Omnes Omnibus: Perfect.
TaMara
@Almost Retired: I’m seriously on a “no news” fast since the debate last week and other than ragging on Tim Miller and stopping by here to see how everyone is handling it, it’s been a great break.
I’m not demoralized and am ready to continue to fight.
I highly recommend to everyone: tune out the noise for at least a few days.
TaMara
And with that, PIE IS GOOD, and unfortunately as it’s July 1, I have to get back to work.
Omnes Omnibus
I will doing pretty much that from Wednesday until Sunday.
H.E.Wolf
If school board elections aren’t everyone’s jam, I think you can also write GOTV postcards to encourage FL Democrats to sign up for Vote By Mail, which has a higher likelihood of actual ballot submission than in-person voting. (If I’m mistaken – then yay, school board campaign! It’s a win-win.)
FL has an abortion rights issue on the November ballot, that needs 60% “YES” to win. The more people who are signed up to vote, the nearer that 60% gets.
[email protected]
This is something that the men in the crowd can help with. Show up and do some work in support of uterine-Americans! It’ll be much appreciated.
Another Scott
Good speech – perfect for the moment and well delivered.
I just sent another $100 to joebiden.com
Forward!!
Cheers,
Scott.
TeezySkeezy
@Omnes Omnibus: I’m actually very honestly not sure what makes you think Ive said something so horrible I deserve this treatment, but it is unjustified.
Ive expressed some despair before, which is how I work through despair, and a wish for dems to do things differently, but you are honestly just being an asshole for no reason.
H.E.Wolf
I just realized we need some postcard-writing music. Summertime means swimming!

Good short speech. May be good for him to get out there with a speech like this every couple of days, setting the tone and agenda for the election.
TeezySkeezy
@TaMara: Why did I deserve that? Seriously. Is there some post you can point to that justifies “go fuck yourself?” Because if there is I will apologize to you. Otherwise, what the fuck? Seriously, wtf?
Betty Cracker
I thought it was a strong speech. He made it personal to Trump. Good! He also read the corrupt SCOTUS majority for absolute filth. Hopefully Alito choked on his dinner.
Baud
TBone
@Jeffro: I like your speech very much. Not sure uninformed voters would though. I wish he’d been a tad angrier but I see the need for calm, measured approach.
That doesn’t mean he’s not plotting his next move, though. It’s smart NOT to announce that 😎
zhena gogolia
@Baud: Good.
zhena gogolia
I love the reporter who shouts, “Why are you so confident you should be the president?”
They don’t give a FLYING FUCK about the decision. Not a flying fuck.
TeezySkeezy
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): I was talking about the general desire for Biden to come out strong in his speech he expressed before the other stuff. But Joe DID come out strong and it was good.
New Deal democrat
Good speech. Glad he explicitly said that the Court has made the President a King, above the law.
Last night I wrote that the issue of Biden’s debate performance would fade quickly, because this morning “the Court is going to rock your world.” And, giving points for form, they did not disappoint on that limited score.
Nukular Biskits
Nailed. It.
Geminid
@Baud: Biologists have surveyed sharks and found that 2 out of 3 said that if they were out hiking they would rather encounter a bear than Donald Trump.
On the question of whether they’d rather eat Trump or be electrocuted by a boat battery, 12% chose electrocution, 17% chose eating Trump and 71% asked, “What if I could puke him.up afterwards?”
TBone
@Baud: good 👍
Nukular Biskits
@TaMara:
How ’bout some blueberry bread puddin’ instead?

From Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (xit available on his official webpage):
An Amendment reversing today’s immunity decision is a good salvo.
Yes, I’m aware it would require a Constitutional Convention to ratify (before anyone tries to explain that to me).
satby
@hrprogressive: so a dictator, but on our side. How progressive.
SiubhanDuinne
It’s been 45 minutes since POTUS’s brief remarks on today’s SC immunity decision, and so far neither the FTFNYT nor the FTFWaPo has said a word about it.
Hmmmm. Can’t help wondering how long it took them the other night to call for him to step aside.
Another Scott
Meanwhile, yet more history to keep in mind…
Cheers,
Scott.
Omnes Omnibus
@satby: That’s why Biden’s approach and his reference to Washington was so spot on.
jowriter
@zhena gogolia: They are a repulsive bunch. Utterly disrespectful in a very serious moment.
Omnes Omnibus
@SiubhanDuinne: To be fair, he was bad for 20 minutes that night and only nailed it for five tonight.
delphinium
@Geminid: LOL!
David 🌈 ☘The Establishment☘🌈 Koch
This is like Dobbs, none of the republicans are running to the senate floor to celebrate the decision
satby
@Omnes Omnibus: Exactly, I agree. Want originalism? I gotcher originalism right here!
David 🌈 ☘The Establishment☘🌈 Koch
@zhena gogolia:
I don’t remember them ever shouting questions to Dump or Dubya when they made a statement
Mousebumples
@H.E.Wolf: yay, Postcards! Vote by mail is fine but I usually like having something a little more immediate, like an upcoming special election. To each their own to GOTV!
MagdaInBlack
@David 🌈 ☘The Establishment☘🌈 Koch: If they had behaved that way with Bush 2, they would not have been allowed to play on the tire swing at the “ranch.”
SiubhanDuinne
@Omnes Omnibus:
Wait, this feels like math.
I WAS TOLD THERE WOULD BE NO MATH!!!❗️‼️
Nukular Biskits
@David 🌈 ☘The Establishment☘🌈 Koch:
Agreed. I haven’t heard a peep out of any of my Republican elected officials. Strange.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)

@Nukular Biskits:
Maybe too soon to say, but perhaps they’re realizing the bodily danger they and their families could be in if Trump has complete immunity in office
Omnes Omnibus
@SiubhanDuinne: I’ll give you math.
8% of Biden is 400% better than 100% of Trump.
Spanky
@SiubhanDuinne: Now 8:48 EDT, and still no sign that the WaPo is aware of it
Eta They’ve now appended a couple of paragraphs to an existing article. Twelve paragraphs in.
Omnes Omnibus
@Spanky: Probably a sign that it was a pretty effective speech.
Torrey
@Nukular Biskits:
If you’re going to engage in that kind of talk, I’m gonna to need you to invite me over. I’ll bring the coffee. Peets.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@Spanky:
@SiubhanDuinne:
Given what’s at stake, I think that’s really disgusting. If I was a reporter, I’d be ashamed to work at either of those papers and I’d quit if I could
comrade scotts agenda of rage
@UncleEbeneezer:
“He needs to do X-Y-Z. Oh, you mean he’s already doing that? Well NOT THAT WAY!!!!!!!”
p.a.
Isn’t the corollary of today’s coronation of the office of President that the Republican Party is now all-in on preventing any Democrat from winning the Presidency by any means necessary?
I know they’re most of the way there already, but now they won’t even bother with legalist fig-leaves. Violence. Assassination?
westyny
@Spanky: Nothing in The Guardian, either.
TBone
@p.a.: yep.

however it’s the top story on BBC News

I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s New Your Times editorial calling for Alito, Thomas, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, Barrett, and Roberts to resign.
SiubhanDuinne
@Spanky:
FTFNYT finally runs a story on Biden’s speech tonight. Nothing wrong with the headline:
The subhed, OTOH, just oozes venom and faux astonishment:
zhena gogolia
@SiubhanDuinne: Oh, that’s mighty big of them.
sdhays
@SiubhanDuinne: I hope he never talks to them again, including over his entire second term.
TaMara
@TeezySkeezy: Gee, I thought you were against tone policing? Hmmm….
Might want to review your comment and the objections (
threefour in a row) and then examine why you received those responses.delphinium
@SiubhanDuinne: So, in other words, still not over their butt hurt yet that Biden won’t talk to them.
Jeffro
@TBone: thanks!
Here’s hoping the campaign sees it as a through-line to rally a demoralized base and left-leaning independents. This is just nuts.
Bill Arnold
@SiubhanDuinne:
Re the NYTimes/”Biden Warns That Supreme Court’s Immunity Ruling Will Embolden Trump”, curiously, the pro-Trump replies dominate the nytimes tweek linking it.
One common right-wing-nutcase theme is that Biden is already abusing the office like a king.
wenchacha
@Baud: Hey, that’s my Congress critter! Good on him.
