… And misses, badly.
In January, I began hearing similar stories from Democratic officials, activists, and donors who came away from interactions with Joe Biden disturbed by what they had seen. For @NYMag, I wrote about the conspiracy of silence to protect the president: https://t.co/clKmksK9D8
— Olivia Nuzzi (@Olivianuzzi) July 4, 2024
I’m disappointed, but not really surprised. Nuzzi’s longform reporting shows a good eye for the devastating details — Giuliani’s frenetic attempts to revive his reputation, Mehmet Oz on the campaign trail, TFG as Norma Desmond haunting Mar-A-Lago. But she’s apparently got a weakness for bad companions (hell, she married Ryan Lizza), and her latest NYMag ‘report’ is the pixilated equivalent of a middle-school horror story told around a late-night campfire. And when the couple got home from the drive-in… there was a detached arm with a hook for a hand hanging off the window!!!
Not a single named sourced in this piece, written by an author who has had it out for Biden for a long time. https://t.co/wNiN9F1KiD
— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) July 4, 2024
For some reason, when I first read Nuzzi’s horror story, a memory surfaced of a John D. MacDonald pulp novel. A would-be power broker attempts, and fails, to extort the hero; his about-to-be-ex-mentor tells him that Hero would not stoop to coming after him for revenge, but ‘someday you’ll be standing in the way of something he’s after, and he won’t bother to ride *around* you.’ Must’ve been thirty years since I read that book, don’t know why it came to mind now.

@scav: I firmly attribute the proliferation of journalism schools as the reason for the decline in quality of journalism in the country. Used to be that journalism was mostly a blue collar profession and it showed in the reporting. Then, we all woke up one day to discover that to be a journalist, you had to have a journalism degree, and to be a top tier journalist, you had to have a degree from an Ivy League school. IOW, the journalistic establishment was supplanted by a bunch of cosseted rich kids who had enough money to get into Columbia but who weren’t smart enough or disciplined enough to get a real degree. When I was at Ole Miss, the number of credit hours needed to get a journalism degree was literally HALF the number of hours I needed for a Music Ed degree.

Chris
@Citizen Alan:
For a while there in the late 2000s and early 2010s, social media actually provided a valuable service, because it was actually possible in a way that it hadn’t been in a long time for normal people, sometimes even subject matter experts, to reach significant audiences without the entire experience being curated by an editor’s room with a preset narrative.
I very much believe this is one of the biggest differences between 2008 and 2012 versus 2024. In Obama’s two terms, it was actually possible for word to get out on social media that wouldn’t through mainstream media, and the Obama campaign utilized it with a fair degree of skill. In the last ten years, rich people have put a lot of money and effort into turning social media into a right-wing puke funnel, and/or enshittifying it with bots and trolls. So what used to be an occasional corrective on the mainstream media’s behavior now only reinforces it instead.

@Dorothy A. Winsor: I think George wanted Biden to say “I know people are worried so I’ll take a full neuropsych test on live TV and you can broadcast it.” I wonder if George realizes they only give that test if they think you’ve had a cognitive decline. TCFG has bragged about taking the initial screening for that twice, which means the doctor was concerned he had cognitive decline! Yet the press isn’t howling that he should take a neuropsych test.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
So, based on what I’m reading, Biden did fine during the interview despite George S being a dick with his questions?
BlueDWarrior
It is clear watching this interview that Joe Biden is absolutely right in the intonation that the ‘media’, such as they exist as a cohesive organization, is trying to force him to concede and drop out for no reason other than THEY have determined that he should concede and drop out.
The very fact this is coming as his baseline support among Democratic voters is what it has been all year despite a full week of pounding this table is why I agree with people who call this a ratfucking operation.
Yes Joe Biden is a old man, he was an old man when he was nominated in 2020, he was an old man when they held the line in the 2022 Midterms, and he is an old man now. The only way you were getting him out of that position is if you basically started immediately after inauguration and started convincing baseline democrats that he’s old and should not even commit to running in 2024. They largely didn’t and now is largely too late to shove him out the door now.
So why we are insisting on doing this dance, well I have my guesses but I really don’t know.

George looked like a fuckwit.
Biden seems to do best at rallies, so this wasn’t a “fire in the belly” type of interview, but he did not – I repeat, did not – have the same type of concerning performance he did during the debate.
He did fine.
If our media wasn’t a wholly owned subsidiary of Corprofash, Inc. they’d be embarrassed by their own performance.

This was George carrying water for his corprofascist shareholders/the pants wetting consultant class, desperately hoping for a “gotcha” moment from Biden that would irrevocably give them the “aha!! See!!” Moment.

The Democrats will do irreparable damage to the party this election and the foreseeable future if they allow that convicted felon, his political party and their courtier media to spook them into turning on Biden. @schrodingers_cat:
she looks the part because she’s one of many who dye their hair. She “wants” to be blond but still has those brunette roots
And everyone can do whatever with their hair, it’s not a judgement, just an observation.

@BlueDWarrior:
I’ve never noticed the raspy voices in all of the family that was older than me, even the ones nearly a century old. Not the men, not the women. And mine hasn’t changed in the last 50-60 years.
I’m not saying it doesn’t happen but just yesterday I had an almost hour discussion with a neighbor who is in her late 90s, and her voice isn’t raspy. I live in a seniors complex, one has to be over 55 to rent here, I’d say that at least one third of the occupants are retired, but likely closer to half. Very few raspy voices.

Well of George’s goal was out Biden’s sekret’ dementia asking the same question over and over again is a curious way to go about it.

Well, a mentality like that certainly explains how Flat Earthism became a thing.

Everything they touch turns to shit.
Another case of Trump is just the system, not the disease,

@Ruckus: You’re in California. :-)
Biden’s Health Summary from February 28 (6 page .pdf) mentions seasonal allergies and “gastroesophagael reflux, primarily having to clear his throat more often. This may also contribute to occasional cough and sinus congestion” that he’s being treated for.
My MIL had a terrible post-nasal drip that bothered her for many years.
Cheers,
Scott.

@Westyny: The lulzi nuptials? It has a certain ring to it.

@Spanky: Plus Joe gave two speeches yesterday, and another earlier today. Those, plus allergies, and my voice-box would be complaining, too!
Juju.
@Ruckus: He’s been talking a lot an has allergies. He may have stressed his vocal cords with all the speeches he has been giving lately. His voice is raspy. It happens and it’s not caused by dementia.
Juju.
@Another Scott: Thanks for posting the medical information on Biden. I’ve only seen summaries of the summary. Biden is in good shape for an 81 year old male. The summary is well written.

She used to write really snarky sarcastic things as I recall. Don’t remember any actual investigative reporting. A lot of people thought she was funny, but I think she got repetitive and people moved on.

Thirty plus years ago the Clintons fired George Stephanopoulos for doing his job badly, and he has never forgiven the Democratic Party for that.

@Another Scott: My takes on Olivia Nuzzi have always been that it is more important to her to appear brutally clever than to inform her readers, and I was always left wondering why some MSNBC host thought booking her was worthwhile. I never felt she had anyone but herself in mind. I could not find a reason to trust her. This latest performance surprises me not one jot.

@Quinerly: watched that live. Unpleasant. The press corpse is truly repugnant.
