It’s 117 degrees in Phoenix today and supposed to be around that for the next few days. We are supposed to hit some record. It’s a dry heat and the 117 isn’t that bad for a few hours but it’s the lows in the morning which are in the 90s so you never get a break.
@Mai Naem mobile: No dry heat here. Northern Virginia was 98/”feels like” 111 today (or 108 depending on which service I looked at). I didn’t spend much time outdoors.

High 90’s in Oregon’s Cascade foothills to low 100’s in the Willamette Valley. Not record breaking high temps but likely to last for a week be a record breaking duration. Cooling to mid 60’s at night which helps a lot.
It’s not just newspapers; it’s every “official journalist”.
Two of my favorite local weatherfolx (The Noyes, up heah in Bwahstin) had been running the numbers, and started up their own online weather service. They noticed that the viewership was steadily decreasing, and there is, ahem, “pressure” at Channel 10/NECN to do something to increase viewership.
One of them left the TV station they both worked for, the other went to weekends only. Their site/app is a decent competitor to WeatherUnderground and the defunct DarkSky. And I check it multiple times a day; NECN, rare mornings; NBC10 — never.
If nobody is consuming what you’re producing, you should expect to go out of business.

@Kelly: Same here in southeastern WA. At least a week of 100 plus, starting tomorrow (today topped out at a measly 99,) with Tues and Wed hitting 111 and 110. 🥵
I’ve been getting my “local” news from Universal Hub. Mind you, Adam is an actual journalist who got laid off from one of the tech mags and set up the site decades ago. He’s certainly faster at reporting today’s shootings than anybody else. He also reports all of the fun “car drove onto the T Tracks” info that is vital for commuters.

Watching an absolutely stunning sunset here in SE Wisconsin (bsky link, sorry I guess it’s not viewable if not logged in?).
I won’t gloat, because I know it can whiplash and get hot and steamy as heck here, but, I have the sliding doors open and an approximately 70 degree very gentle breeze is wafting in. We did have a few brief rain showers today & yesterday (and an inch of rain fell overnight w/ thunder). The absolute glory days of summer, and I am very very grateful.
@FlyingToaster: Adam fills a niche nicely and I admire what he does. But it’s no replacement for a full-fledged news source.
And sometimes I think of UHub as the place I go to get my heart broken on a regular basis, because it’s always filled with news about my favorite places or the 110 year old corner market going out of business.

As I wrote to Josh Marshall (who has been strangely buying the media narrative on this), who elected the nepo baby NYT chief? The NYT has hated every Dem nominee for ages. This blog coined “Good News for John McCain” thanks to them in 2008, and they were no better in any other campaign.
Biden should say “I’ll do an interview with the NYT once they’re a worker-owned union shop, not before.”

Since Biden’s sit down interview isn’t the disaster Trump-adjacent journalists and pundits needed to keep the clickbait factory going they’re moving the goal posts to: “he should have done this earlier” and “this doesn’t prove a thing”
Or the Red Pickup slamming into the front of Jana Grill opposite Watertown Yard. WTAF?
I’m afraid that right now, we’re in for further balkanization of news sources; the corporate media is in a death spiral and the people who’ve been pushed out are having to go it alone.

I want to provide a new narrative:
Given the recent Heritage calls for lawsuits if Biden is not the candidate, and their recent threat that “their” revolution would “remain bloodless…” as long as they win, that they are directly threatening our current president with assassination. They can bluster and moan all they want, but they have made clear implied threats and believe they have the means to do it.
Let’s put Heritage and their minions on the defense for their remarks.
Well, since this an open thread, the team on at work, we Engineering Technicians were told we are irreplaceable and upper management is in the middle of Thunder-Dome Death Match over who manages us (going by the layoffs, there are easily dozen fired senior level VPs who have lost the battle and been drug out on their feet and fired, meanwhile, we lowly techs all got 20% raises, apparently the spoils from the fallen’s executive salaries)
I’ve been told by friends in management this means I will never be laid off, but never promoted. Since “promotion” means a management position, that’s fine for me. Still, it is a quite curious position to be in. And no, they can’t automate us out of existence, they spent thirty years attempting that before they gave up. See AI art as to why it didn’t work. However, it’s a side of capitalism I never expected see.

Newspaper readership by age
Newspaper readership by ideology
Newspaper revenu decline
they’re pandering to their customers.
