Biden Narrows Trump's Election Lead in Key States After Debate: Poll – Bloomberg https://t.co/P7zLPBZDn8
— Ben LaBolt (@BenLaBolt) July 6, 2024
Bloomberg certainly can’t be accused of Democratic partisanship here, but even grudging news is good… “Biden Narrows Gap With Trump in Swing States Despite Debate Loss”:
President Joe Biden registered his best showing yet in a Bloomberg News/Morning Consult tracking poll of battleground states, even as voters offered withering appraisals of his debate performance amid panic within his party.
Republican Donald Trump led Democrat Biden by only 2 percentage points, 47% to 45%, in the critical states needed to win the November election. That’s the smallest gap since the poll began last October. Biden now leads Trump in Michigan and Wisconsin. He’s within the poll’s statistical margin of error in Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina, and is farthest behind in the critical state of Pennsylvania…
The Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll is the first comprehensive survey of the states most likely to decide the outcome in the Electoral College since the debate on June 27. Its findings run counter to some recent national polls, which showed a worsening picture for Biden. The poll could turn out to be a statistical outlier.
While the results show a “modest boost” in concerns about Biden’s mental acuity, they’re “nothing to match the level of alarm expressed by prominent voices in the Democratic Party,” said Eli Yokley, US political analyst for Morning Consult. “This suggests the age matter was already baked into most voters’ minds: The only difference now is more Democrats are acknowledging it.”
The Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll also started four days after the debate — later than some national polls — giving voters more time to evaluate Biden’s performance.
The poll’s first responses came on the day the Supreme Court granted Trump immunity for criminal acts he may have committed as part of his “official responsibilities.” The issue of democracy now rivals immigration as the second-biggest concern among swing-state voters, and it’s one of few issues — including climate change, abortion and health care — where Biden enjoys a significant edge in voter trust…
Trump has his own hurdles to overcome. Some 62% of voters said he’s dangerous, an increase from 59% in February. That comes after a jury found him guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records, making him the first former US president to become a convicted felon. The survey is the first Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll since Trump’s conviction in late May.
“Biden’s debate performance may be more recent but Trump’s guilty verdict has not gone away,” said Matt Monday, senior manager at Morning Consult…

I cannot believe that Biden can be up in WI and MI and down in PA. That seems insane to me.
trnc
I would ask this statement to go steady and would consider proposing if we can get it up to about 75%.
ETA:
Yup. I wrote the day after the debate that Biden had a really rough 15 minutes, but appears much better now. Meanwhile, DT is still a convicted felon.
Mike E
@Eolirin: people are playing media from the debate and his interview and hearing him enumerate his accomplishments. This hatchet job by the press is backfiring spectacularly.
@trnc: 70% believe the fascist judicial coup cannot stand and therefore Mafia Don must be defeated
Splitting Image
I love how doggedly they pursue their petty “narrative”.
If the polls moved towards Biden in the week after the debate, then Biden won the debate, period. Results matter.
Trump behaved like an unhinged loon in the debate and the number of people who think he’s dangerous edged upward. This is as it should be. I’m glad they were able to spare a paragraph down near the bottom to discuss this.

That billboard is fantastic. Exactly the right mood: the Joe we all like.
I still think some Joe-Kamala memes would be a real mood-lifter.
Remember “IMMA POINT AT’EM“?! These were just great.

The olds will have Uncle Joe’s back this election. Boys and girls in their 70s were once the feistiest of the opponents of Nixon’s Imperial power grab. I think it will surprise the pundits when it turns out this isn’t their grandparents’ generation.

Thanks for a good news thread.
I got paid Friday – yay! Timing of credit card bill, mortgage, and childcare bills were all cutting my bank account a bit lower than I prefer.
I’m planning to stock up on postcards, stampz and probably some Biden campaign swag. (do they have an I DISSENT shirt yet?)
If anyone is interested in postcards, but is short on cash, please reach out to WaterGirl. I can have some stamps or postcards sent your way!
(I don’t think I’ve had anyone take me up on this before, but I still wanted to make the offer.)
Looking forward to more postcarding once I’m home tonight!
Eolirin
@Mike E: Sorry, I meant more that PA is, from that poll, going Trump while MI and WI are going Biden seems implausible. If we get to election night and Biden loses PA but wins WI I will be gobsmacked.
I could see him winning MI and losing both. But a WI win and a PA loss feels like some bizarro world thing.

In 2016, only a month out from election day, the release of the “Access Hollywood” tapes posed a seemingly lethal disruptive threat to the Trump campaign – with many GOP leaders openly, seriously contemplating whether Trump should drop out…for a couple of days, until they were bailed out by Russian meddlng via Julian Assange releasing a trove of emails stolen in a Russian hack of the DNC, selectively chosen for their controversially aggravating effect driving wedges with the Bernie wing of the democratic party in particular, effectively changing the subject (the media is responsible for a huge share of blame for that). And then they got a final gratuitous assist from Jim Comey a week out from election day freshly stirring up the butter emails! brouhaha.
Alas, the Russians don’t seem inclined to similarly help out Joe in the spirit of fair and equal dealing.

The Red Pen
People generally don’t know about “reverting to the mean.” This basically describes the polls moving back to where they were after whatever shock wears off. I think the debate can fade, but that just puts Biden back to being slightly behind Trump (per the polls).
On the topic of replacing Biden, it’s Biden’s call. If Biden wants to stay on the ticket, he stays — for better or worse. If Biden steps down, it’s going to be his decision and I would expect that people who support Biden would support Biden’s decision. It would be a risk, though. Too many people think “Candidate X” will be the silver bullet.
TaMara
@Mike E: I agree with this. I’m still shook by how awful the media has been (oh, how could I be so naive after butter emails) but there has been strong, loud pushback.
And as much as they try and find that one or two Dems who want him to step down – there are 10x, with much more power behind them – saying they are with him and he’s been and will continue to be a great President.

My grandfather did Vietnam, three tours. I’ve been feeling some way about pundits thinking that its okay to invalidate my vote and all the other votes for Biden in the Democratic primaries. My husband just showed me a post from @newsjennifer_schulze who appears to be a recovering journalist, on Threads (posted yesterday, July 5th). She decided to count the number of news stories the NYT has done on Biden’s debate performance between the end of the debate and 8 a.m. the morning of July 5th. According to her, there were 192 pieces: 142 news stories, 50 opinion pieces, and 13 non-debate news stories. In the same time period, Trump got 92 stories, most about the SCOTUS immunity ruling. None questioned his mental fitness.
Another journalist explained that once a story gets traction and eyeballs, all newsrooms will jump on it to take advantage of the traffic and money the topic generates. The only way to avoid this is to ignore the topic (stop clicking on links that feed the frenzy). I’ll admit that I have fallen short there on this story, but its something I’ll remember for the future. I’m no longer clicking on any NYT, WaPo, Atlantic, New Yorker, etc., news links that reference the debate performance and related fallout. I am still reading Balloon Juice, though I will sometimes walk away to clear my head.
Hope you’re all taking periodic mental health breaks because something tells me we’ll see a lot more of this type of journalism through November. As I told my husband, I’m voting for Biden no matter what because it’s about MAGA fascism versus democracy for me. The alternative is unthinkable – my family has fled one country already because of the repercussions from dictatorships. I don’t want to have to run away from another.

This is true. In between poking the Would I Lie troll downstairs into a spitting frenzy it occurred to me that Stench must be hating this so much. His own people think he’s a toxic disaster who can’t be trusted to actually campaign for President without turning off millions of voters, so he’s got to sit quietly in a safe room and rely on a bunch of hoity-toity urban elitists who wouldn’t eat two tables away from him in a restaurant to deal with Joe Biden for him?
That is not a state of affairs that is going to last. Especially not after it sinks in that the polling isn’t showing the Democratic drop-off they were promising him. He’s going to blow. They won’t be able to stop it.

I only wish the UK electorate had thoroughly rejected it. Sadly, the vote totals in a lot of former Tory seats show a roughly 50/50 split of the Righty vote between them and Farage’s Reform mob, allowing tons of newnewlabourinc suits to sneak in on narrow majorities. It’s what could have happened on a smaller scale in 2019 if Farage hadn’t stood down his Brexit Party in Tory held seats.
If the rump Tories and The Fascist Frogs get close enough for unity over the next five years, and Starmer’s mob keep moving Right, completing the split between newnewlabourinc and actual core Labour voters (they got hundreds of thousands fewer votes nationwide than Corbyn’s Labour did in 2019) I can see things going very badly indeed in 2029.

PA is a simple state. There’s Philly and its suburbs in the southeast and Pittsburgh and its surrounding towns in the west. These two areas account for a lot of the state’s population (too lazy to lookup the numbers).
Outside of a couple college towns and those cities, the rest of PA has been referred to as Pennsyltucky. Voters aren’t much different than voters in Kentucky or other Republican states.
The key for Democrats to win is to turnout Philly and Pittsburgh to have more votes for Democrats than the central part of the state has for Republicans.

Entirely due to the spiteful decision taken by Starmer’s purge happy cultists to ban the very popular Faiza Shaheen from standing as the Labour candidate just weeks before the election. Fetterman’s strategy was to go to all the rural counties and peel off a few voters here and there. It worked, held the margin down in the red counties so that Philly and Pittsburgh could run up the score. (BTW, this is why I say our electoral problems are on our right side, not our left side.)
Once you are out of the cities, it is, like, kind of terrifying. Someone in Greensburg who has property within eyeshot of the train tracks took a trailer and painted FUCK BIDEN on the side of it. This drama resembles, or at least echoes, Afghanistan Withdrawal, the world-shattering crisis we managed to forget in time for the release of Taylor Swift’s next album. The media seems to have a Joe Biden is Weak narrative burned into their brains; in fact, it’s probably one of the few sustaining patterns there. In some sense you can understand it, the facts if this election are obvious to anyone with two brain cells, so reporting it as just a repetition of the same boring play that has happened in the last several elections, i.e., the Republican is generally a fraud pretending to be Daddy, the Dems are the Moms who want you to at least pretend to be civilized and then dutifully clean up after you call when Dad comes home drunk and vomits all over the living room floor. Trump is a sexual predator, fraudster and narcissistic maniac who achieved nothing in four years and probably killed several thousand people by his rank idiocy during the Covid epidemic. Joe is a boring old politician who heads an experienced team that knows how to run the government. In other words, he’s not fun.
Like the Afghanistan nonsense, the media types think this is really the big thing that will make the election fun and, most tellingly, make them seem important. That is all this is ever about. George Stephanopolous thinks his stupid repetition will get Joe to finally admit he’s done and make George a fucking hero. It’s all about measuring himself against the big man. What a pathetic little fucking twerp. As many have said, there was a shit load he could have asked, like the threat of shit like Project 2025 and the Supreme Court becoming a star chamber. No, he just had to keep asking the same stupid questions.
Like Afghanistan, it looks like most of the public doesn’t give two shits about this. People who are voting Dem would vote for Joe’s animated corpse. We already know the MAGAts will vote for fucking Satan because they’re fully ensconced in a death cult. Partisanship pretty much locks everything in place so that the election comes down to a few thousand votes in a few states, and that is pretty much just a matter of some negligible differences in turnout of the respective bases. Maybe Joe’s debate performance could reduce turnout, but the threat of Trump probably dwarfs that. So very likely this doesn’t matter at all.

@wil: Ah buck it. I’m bored so I’m going there.
I don’t recall anyone denying there were names (although a lot of articles are relying on “anonymous sources” which is sus especially on something this important) but a lot of are saying those names, and you, are wrong. Now there are polls that say that Biden in fact gained some ground especially where it mattered. So now that we have an idea that Biden is in fact not losing at this point, what is your justification for replacing him?

@Yutsano:
Last night someone kept asking me to ‘prove’ or ‘show evidence’ that there were real people wanting Biden to step down, apparently because they were just too lazy to go read the headlines about Democrats meeting to talk about exactly that.
A lot of articles on this topic ARE going to rely on ‘anonymous sources’ but that does not mean they are wrong. It does not make them automatically suspicious. There is a lot of behind the scenes maneuvering going on and anonymous sources is just a reality.
That’s great that we’ve seen one or two polls showing Biden is not collapsing as badly as it looks. Let’s hope they are real, but I don’t put much stock in a few polls.
Of course, saying there are a few good polls that only show Biden losing by a little bit also has to acknowledge that Biden is behind and has been behind all this time and nothing much seems to be changing that.
My ‘justification’ is wanting the case against Trump to be prosecuted forcefully and not be in a situation where we have a weak and feeble candidate who cannot call Trump out and cannot seem to aggressively make the case for Trump’s unfitness, but rather seems to play defense and hope for the best. And that’s all before the total disaster of the debate and the wavering, weak interview yesterday with a friendly interviewer.
You want to circle the wagons, and that’s fine, but people who think we’d be better off with Kamala are coming from a place of honesty as well.

@japa21: Sorry, but saying Trump “lied 27 or 28 times, anyway more than 20 times during the debate” is not ‘forcefully calling Trump out’
The man is a convicted felon, a rapist, has been convicted of fraud, owes half a billion in judgments against him, most of his lieutenants from the 2020 election are in prison, have been pardoned or are up on felony charges themselves, Trump is running stay out of prison, etc. etc. etc.
Those things should have been called out loudly multiple times during the debate and during EVERY public appearance.
Instead Biden mentioned ONCE during the debate that Trump is a convicted felon, in an “oh by the way did you know” aside, and seems content to say that Trump is a liar and nothing harsher than that.
That is not prosecuting the case forcefully.

@Splitting Image: I read that article, and I see what’s going on. These fuckers are ashamed that Biden looks like an old man, they can’t bear the thought of trying to stuff every one of Trump’s flaws in everyone’s faces, while Republicans are saying Biden is *OLD*.
What are they ashamed of, though? The old man cooties? They’ve had *four years* to adjust. The stutter? Again, *FOUR YEARS* to adjust. No, they’ve been getting mocked all along about how Biden is old, old, old, and now, they see that the bullies will start being overbearing, and crowing victory.
You know why I’m disgusted? Because they’re afraid of impotent bullies. The words, the stories, the questions, oh, poor, poor, snowflakes. Now they have to do absolutely nothing because a *narrative* has been *confirmed*, rather than punching back effectively. “On the record? Trump was stupid forever, but now he’s clearly delusional. In the face of a delusional candidate, the smart, sharp, experienced, hand is the one you want on the tiller. Maybe Trump’s convictions mean more than Biden’s single debate stumble.”
Assuming you say dumbass shit like “hand on the tiller,” it’s the right form for the message. “Trump is worse, and Biden stumbled once.”

And these SOBs sit back and laugh.
Most of the BJ’ers I’ve experienced here, even those with strong opinions, are willing to acknowledge their positions may not be correct. Trolls, however, do not.
I am no expert on dealing with trolls, other than providing them with recipes (something I learned a long time ago as a lurker here). But, IMHO, trolls, like assholes, have to be confronted directly lest the trust factor of the platform becomes lost.

@SomeRandomGuy: The media isn’t going to do the job Dems should be doing. Most of the media has been oriented to favor Republicans for decades now.
It’s in the language….the “heartland” vs the “coastal elites”…Republicans are ‘rock-ribbed’ or ‘staunch’…etc.
But Democrats have not been punching back effectively or even much at all. The moment Trump became a convicted felon every Democrat should have been on every TV and radio show, every podcast, YouTube show, whatever, repeating “Trump is a CONVICTED FELON AND CANNOT BE PRESIDENT” which is what Republicans would have done if the situation were reversed.
But Democrats just can’t get their act together to do stuff like that, and neither can Biden.
The media sucks, but don’t blame the media when Democrats aren’t doing what they should be doing either.

@ArchTeryx: Since you’re talking wave elections, I’m really hoping and expecting it will happen in the U.S.. I have my moments, where I imagine that there are enough Republicans who just don’t care about the rule of law to fall in line behind the orange monstrosity.
People need to remember, there’s no reason to think Republicans will win, and plenty of reasons to think they’ll lose. I mean, TFG’s crimes are not just scandalous – he flat out leaked top secret information about our nuclear subs. This isn’t about subverting the rule of law to smear Biden – it’s actually, you know, an *important* crime.
SomeRandomGuy
Just because two propositions are presented doesn’t mean they’re equally valid.
“Should Biden step aside, when there’s no real reason to think he should? Yes, but I could be wrong.” is appropriate
“Should Biden continue his campaign, when there’s no real reason to think he should step aside?” merits a mere “yes,” because to entertain the idea that he should step aside assumes facts not in evidence. People are whining about a single debate performance, and don’t even have a single fact on their side.
You want to prove he should step aside, then do so. But you’re not entitled to pretend your position is stronger than it is, that you’re entitled to another person’s doubt. *YOU* are the one who is saying “in this situation, we should throw out all conventional wisdom, because.”
And I’ll call you right the flip out, saying “BECAUSE WHY?” and you graciously say that you could be wrong, but, dude, until “because why?” was stated, you never had a *chance* to be right.
The entire journalistic corps has gone Republican – what matters is feelings, *not* evidence. No evidence needed to say we should shitcan Biden, just feelings.
Well, that’s the worst part about Trump. People support him, because of feelings, regardless of the evidence. When Republicans are the problem, saying we should be more touchy-feely-Republican is just nonsense..
wil
@SomeRandomGuy:
No, that is inserting your belief into the premise.
People who believe Biden should step aside do not think there is “no real reason to think he should”
In fact they very much think there is a real reason he should.
That’s the honest way to put it.
wil
@SomeRandomGuy:
