This is an interesting glimpse into the way that the Post cultivates the youngest Supreme Court justice. Ann Marimow, the Post’s Supreme Court correspondent, has this gem in yesterday’s edition, which was pushed as an “Editor’s Choice” on their mobile version. The “Sotomayor not pictured” is chef’s kiss.
Of course, Ms. Marimow is not alone. The “liberal” Ruth Marcus was at it a few weeks ago with an opinion piece headlined “Amy Coney Barrett is no handmaid to the Supreme Court’s conservative majority” [ed note: vomit]. I realize that writers aren’t responsible for headlines but it’s consistent with the piece:
Barrett’s long-standing ties to a conservative Catholic group, People of Praise, raised warnings that she would be an eager handmaid to the conservative male majority; in reality, Barrett has been no submissive pushover.
Marcus starts by acknowledging that, well, yeah, ACB did vote with the majority to overturn Dobbs. And of course Marcus didn’t mention that People of Praise has been accused of covering up sexual (and other) abuse. Still, ACB is “no handmaid.” She gets a little feisty when she writes those opinions, but ultimately she calms down and votes with the rest of the conservatives who want to relegate women back to the stone age, or give Republican Presidents the rights of kings.
This is what Democrats are up against: a voluntary bullshit machine that is set up to maybe, someday, get a “scoop” from these horrible people, whose followers would happily burn the Post building to the ground on the orders of their god king.

Barrett isn’t the worst current Justice but she’s right there with them on their most heinous decisions.

Ruth Marcus is basically a mix of Broder and Richard Cohen. IOW, pretty worthless.

Ridiculous to say that ACB was not a handmaiden because she gets feisty – ultimately, if you vote for Dobbs you’ve pretty much voted with the male white majority.

I’ve been thinking this morning about the voluntary bullshit machine, and more broadly, about the elite agenda setters on the liberal + centrist beats. I’m talking here about news press like the politics desks at the big dailies, the fleet of pundits like Brian Buetler and Ezra Klein, and of course the execrable op-ed ‘liberal’ flying monkeys.
What I think we’re really seeing is, in part, their own desperation that their multi-decade influence operation is losing efficacy. The biggest place we see that is the absolutely full-court, non-stop effort to overturn the wishes of 14.3M Dem primary voters. And I think they’re livid that we in the base are not complying like we used to.
Pieces like this BJ post pulling back the curtain on how the ‘center’ manufactures fake centrism from an obvious right wing judge like Amy Conehead Barrett is part and parcel of the bullshit machine. I, like probably quite a few others, was well aware of how the rightwing bullshit machine works. Fox, WSJ etc have been all too obvious for years.
But part of the elite crackup in this country is reflected in how they really didn’t even want Biden the first time, but he — and with the help of Black, often southern, voters — got the nom and then, despite the bullshit machine’s massive handwringing/doomspelling, won.
That same set of influencers promised a red wave and massively overlooked the Dobbs effect in 2022, I think again trying to will into being a more hobbled Biden presidency. Maybe for the drama of a f*cked D.C. with a sham impeachment for lots of clicks, and probably because too many elite centrist and near-left journos and punters pay taxes and align with GOP policy there, but the fix was attempted. And failed!
Here we are again. But take heart from the stinging loss to elite prognostication that was France’s election. LFG!

Journalism stopped being about “comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable” a long time ago, and at best, is now a self-satisfying exercise in peacockery (IE “Look at all this access to famous, important, powerful people I have!) to, at worst, the corprofascist shareholders of said media outlets commanding their underlings to write only the most decorus pieces of pablum designed to completely obscure “the truth” in subservience of “this will surely help our bottom line”.
We need a whole new set of journalists, and journalistic standards.

On the main topic: Barrett is trying to walk the line that it seems CJ Roberts held but recently abandoned, with near-meaningless stunts like concurring in part on the immunity decision.
That case is absolute horseshit. Wether it was in some functions 5-1-3 or 6-3 matters not. Yes, her going full no (which she could have done in a separate opinion to maintain ‘distance’) wouldn’t have stopped Trump’s insane possible power grab. But in terms of the political and even precedent-setting effect, a 5-4 decision with a “D+R” dissent would have had some larger impact.
She opted to go along to get along. To hell with her. And shame on Ruth Marcus. I guess I know now not to expect better, but I had.

The Right is all in to bash Harris. The misogynists among Dems won’t say they have a problem with her, but clearly do. I think the energy on our side needs to be about making people comfortable with the Biden / Harris team. They need reassurance that he’s perfectly capable, but if there is a problem, she’s got this. Over and over. He is slower. He is more frail. For people disturbed by this, just saying Biden is fine isn’t going to convince them. They need to understand that Biden/Harris are a team. Eolirin
@E: There are, but they’re tricky. Public funding works really well as long as the government can credibly demonstrate that it’s remaining independent, but it will get siezed by bad actors getting elected, and perhaps more importantly getting to that point of credibility will extremely be hard in the current environment; even if, say it was just pure no strings attached cash grants to existing organizations, anyone taking that money would be attacked incessantly by right wing media sources.
Crowdfunding is effective on a smaller scale but has issues scaling up.
The biggest problems are cultural though; it is difficult to get people who don’t actually care that much to pay attention when there’s a dozen ways for them to spend their time that are more fun. Age of video games, social media and Netflix. Constant always on avenues for entertainment.
Without a strong cultural impetus to be well informed the only thing that’s going to make enough money to be self sustaining long term is the gossip rag and even that loses out to social media engagement in the end.
Like maybe there’s room in the market for one org like the NYT to exist while everything else fails. It’d be nice if it wasn’t a horribly corrupted organization, but…
