Soon after we cast off one morning we came across this single elephant. He slowly made his way deeper into the Zambezi River. Last we saw him he was swimming and completely submerged except for his trunk. I don’t know if he stopped at one of the islands or made it all the way across to Zimbabwe.

Hippos are herbivores but very territorial. This one kept an eye on us.

It let us know when we got too close. Our guide says they will attack boats. They are the animal that causes the most human fatalities in Africa.

In contrast to the scary looking creatures, this is a female Waterbuck (a type of antelope). They have a white marking on the rear that looks like they sat down on a recently painted toilet seat.

We passed a herd of Cape Buffalo on the bank above the river in Zimbabwe. When they were not grazing a few would take turns going down the bank to drink.

A mother and calf that waited until it was less crowded to visit the river.

A Baobab tree on the river bank as the light was fading. Note the bird in the top of the tree – probably a vulture or fish eagle.

The sunsets in Southern Africa are unlike any I have seen in the world.

Great photos! And that last one, wow.

The two Cape Buffaloes have different horns. Is that an indicator of male vs female buffalo?

These are spectacular! Somehow I missed part 1 of 2; heading off immediately to find it.
ETA: And I’m so glad I did! Wonderful trip, wonderful pix. Thank you for sharing your memories with us.

Nice pictures! That first Cape Buffalo picture has a very “Far Side” look.

What a wonderful trip you had! Love these photos, especially the yawning (or roaring) riverhorse and the baobab with the bird on a top branch. And that sunset! Thanks!

@Paul in Jacksonville: Not sure. It may be an indication of the relative ages of the two.

I love seeing large birds perched at the very top of a tree. And that sunset is gorgeous.

Ah, brings back good memories – I did a trip like that over 25 years ago. It ran out of Zimbabwe because Mugabe hadn’t fucked it all up yet.

@stinger: Hippos have teeth and aren’t afraid to use them. That open mouth is a threat display.
