Picking JD Vance as the VP pick is, in my mind, of a piece of the rest of the lazy, overconfident campaign that Trump is running. He has few public appearances, and the Vance nomination shows that he has zero interest in outreach to blacks, hispanics or women — Vance is a bigot and an misogynist just like Trump. Once we start talking about the shit that comes out of his mouth, and the bullshit in his book, this fake hillbilly will not be popular with anyone. This is a ticket for fascists and incels, and we need to make that point clearly.
I’m resigned to another week more of the Biden replacement shitshow. After that, either Biden or Harris will be nominated and we’ll be done with it. At this point, it just needs to be done, and we need Democrats who are ready to talk issues. I also think that interest in the assassination attempt will be short-lived because we sure forget school shootings pretty quickly, don’t we.
Also, some Democrats just need to quit with the quitting. Josh Marshall [paywalled]:
But here’s the thing. The folks talking to the Capitol Hill sheets didn’t say, we’re dropping the swap Biden idea. They apparently said, well, we’re giving up on presidential race altogether. That is just the kind of toxic loserdom that makes me see red every time. Can’t stand it. I’m agnostic on the replace Biden thing. If the big party players want to do it then do it. And if not then Biden’s the candidate. I go back and forth on which option I think has the better shot at success. What I’m hearing now is that these ringleaders are just going to take a pass on the whole race or have their contribution be giving demoralizing quotes to Politico if they can’t get their way. The truth is we don’t have any time for whining. If members of Congress want to replace Biden on the ticket, they can. They need to get together and do it. If not, then drop the idea and move on. But again there is just no damn time for whining.
I’m actually seeing people write articles comparing those raised fist images to the iconic flag raising on Iwo Jima or various paintings from the Revolutionary War or Christian iconography. A column ran today on The New York Times op-ed page in which the author explained that Saturday’s events convinced him that Trump was what Hegel described as a “man of destiny” on the model of Napoleon, a figure “whose own particular aims involve those large issues which are the will of the World Spirit.”
JESUS CHRIST.
If you can’t take in this nonsense and say, nope, I’m going to head straight to Milwaukee and make the case against this dangerous degenerate, than you just need to resign or get out of the way and make room for someone who can. No complaining, no whining. Act.
Trump/Vance is a beatable ticket. Biden can beat it. Harris can beat it. But only if we can talk about their positions and plans instead of the last 3 weeks of crap.
(Edited to add: Apparently JD is in the 6-ish foot range, according to some commenters and current google wisdom. Apparently, 5’7″ was listed as his height in the first hit you’d get from google a while ago, which gave rise to this tweet.)

I think Trump made a mistake with JD Vance. JD Vance is an attack dog, but I don’t think he can actually be controlled. I think he’s going to cause Trump to be pissed off. Pence was a good choice, because he just keeps his mouth shut most of the time. This guy though, he’s not going to shut up and will likely stumble and piss people off. If Trump has a problem (or gets killed by JD) then shits gonna get wild fast.
Chris
I have said multiple times that I will support whoever the fuck is on the ticket. I think Biden stepping down would probably make things worse, not better, but if that’s the way it goes, whether it’s Harris or somebody else, I will write all the letters for them that I did for the 2020 and 2022 candidates, and crawl over broken glass to vote for them in November. Because helping the Democrats beat Trump is, in fact, literally the most important thing in the world this year.
My concern about Biden’s detractors is that it’s becoming pretty clear that a lot of them are in full-blown “I care more about being right on the Internet than I do about winning an election, and if we end up not dropping Biden, I have no intention of likewise dropping the matter and doing whatever I can to support the ticket. I’m just going to go sit on the bench and alternate between wailing that we’re all doomed and sniping at the campaign for every misstep.”
I’m not saying that for anybody here on this blog, but it sure as hell seems like the course of action that the people leaking to the media, and various ostensibly liberal public figures, have settled on.

Trump needs to pick up all the voters he’s gonna lose from Dobbs (women) from some other group to win. Picking Vance really won’t help. It will only turn away more Women and PoC. Repeating an observation I made a while back: The GQP strategy, such as it is, is to get the Dems to concede victory before the first vote is cast.
I totally reject that and I am sick to death of this stupid ‘controversy’. Biden has many times over demonstrated his competence since his bad 20 minutes at the debate, so if you cannot see it at this point, you don’t want to see it and that’s your dementia, not his. Biden is not dropping out and Dems who are either too chickenshit to go on the record or are actually the imaginary friends of the “reporters” reporting on their surrender first strategy can fuck off into the sun.
We have work to do. The quicker we unite and start doing it the better off we’ll be.

I’ve seen some rumors on various sites that Pelosi is quietly spearheading the dump Biden efforts. I hope that isn’t true because after fighting tooth and nail to keep Feinstein around when she was obviously on death’s door, including invoking misogyny and ageism as motives, that’s a very bad look for Nancy.
w_seattle
From watching the arguments among Dems the last couple weeks, I think some of it is attributable to hardwired reflexive responses to a traumatic event (i.e. the debate-triggered fear of losing the election). So we see fight-or-flight responses with some spectrum in between. Hopefully the party gets past these responses to more constructive activities.

the polling is what it is… after essentially three weeks of national freakout over a bad debate performance and the non-stop shivving of the President, the media got what they wanted. Justification for the narrative to begin with.
Based on everything that we’ve seen, Trump is not gaining new voters and the plan all along was to peel away Biden voters. To make people lose faith in the institutions. They’ve used the media to help this goal effectively because the chattering classes are doing everything but focusing on the differences between the party platforms.
I have faith that people will come home, the message is a good one and our opponents are Bond villain henchmen.

And to echo one theme in the OP, the Ohio law requiring an early nomination is why we’re getting the full court press now from the MSM trying to get him to drop out. If it hadn’t been the debate, it would have been some other gaffe they would have seized on to begin beating their beloved dementia drum.
Irony will be off the charts if the Ohio Republicans’ attempt to keep Biden off the ticket ends up biting Trump/Vance in the ass. If they had made an exception for the Dem ticket instead of trying to get back at other states not wanting to allow an insurrectionist on the ballot, the MSM would have had another month to try to undermine Biden’s support.

In all seriousness, I think Vance is a reach-out to the younger libertarian-manosphere-incel corner of the electorate. One aspect of Vance’s candidacy is that he’s relatively untested. He couldn’t have been that strong in his primary because he won with only 33% of the vote, and that was with Trump’s endorsement.
Vance seems to give a glib interview, but now he’s playing in the big leagues where the spotlight is brighter and the pressure higher. Vance might be a natural, but Republicans may not be that lucky and he could be a clunker. I guess we’ll know before too long.

Voters overwhelmingly say and have been saying that Biden is too old and should withdraw. Biden wasn’t listening to voters. At all. It’s why the elites finally stepped on.
Yesterday’s Morning Consult poll had 55% of Black voters, 64% of Hispanic voters, and 65% of 18-34 voters saying Biden should withdraw.
A NYT poll yesterday showed 62% of Democrats are dissatisfied with the nominee.
Are all of these people elites?
If Biden had truly listened to the American people he never would have run. His biggest liability is he is old and voters know he isn’t getting any younger because they know how time works.

Here in Cincinnati, there are a lot of people of Appalachian descent. That’s also true of Middletown (where Vance is from), which is about 40 miles north of us, and other places along I-75, the north-south interstate.
In the mid 1900s, people left the hills and hollers looking for jobs and found them in Ohio’s factories. They also went to Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and I forget where else. It was a huge internal migration, on par with the migration of Black folks leaving the South for better lives in the North.
The thing about being Black and moving to say, New York, is that you are still Black. If you are Appalachian and moved to Toledo and your kids go to college, they can give up their Appalachian identity. They might say, “Oh, my grandparents from Harland County” but that’s as far as they go.
Not that much different from me saying my grandparents came from Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Austria. I don’t identify with any of those places and why would I?
Not everyone assimilates out, obviously not Vance, who found his heritage a means to make a buck. But it’s hard to see any Appalachian in him, culturally. Whatever the collary of “Oreo” is, he is.

I learned this bit of information from this very blog. In order for Trump to get back to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, he has to:
• Hold NC
• Flip GA and AZ
• Flip one of WI, MI, or PA
Trump plans to accomplish this by:
• Gutting the RNC
• Relying on low-propensity voters who didn’t vote in 2020 or 2022
• Picking JD Vance as his running mate
Biden’s campaign needs only to:
• Hold WI, MI, and PA.
He plans to do this by running a campaign in those three states.
Maybe I’m the outlier right now, but I think that the November surprise is going to be that not only has Biden easily won reelection, but the Dems have retaken the House, and — against the odds — held the Senate.

We are witnessing, in real time, one of the biggest failures of curiosity in the history of journalism.
Katy Tur, squatting in the same building as trump at the RNC, is practicing her best tone of respectful reverence and fangirling as she looks at the mattress-sized gauze on the side of trump’s head, and it doesn’t occur to her to inquire what he was treated for.
Did he get stitches? If so, how many? Why is the bandage so insanely huge? The photographs didn’t appear to show any discernible wound whatsoever.
No, these jackasses are reserving their most harsh interrogations for President Biden, demanding to know if he watched the entire debate from 14 fucking days ago, and who is he listening to, and for the 100th time, is he sure he doesn’t want to drop out.
In fact, President Biden has politely attempted to steer the press’ focus back to doing their jobs, asking Lester Holt why nobody’s asking trump about the 28 lies he told during that debate.
It’s outrageous. If you’re going to subject one candidate to a body cavity-exam level of scrutiny, subject BOTH candidates to it.
Come on, you can’t adequately or honestly “both sides” anything if you’re only scrutinizing one side.
Nobody has even asked trump about the discrepancy of denying his involvement with Project 2025 and the fact that he knows many of its planners, and it mentions his name hundreds of times. FAILURE OF CURIOSITY.
Where are the questions about his weird fixation on Hannibal Lecter, or sharks, or any of the other batshit things he gets away with saying at all times?
How about asking him why he admitted to a discussion with Putin BEFORE the Ukraine invasion, or why he said Putin would release hostages to him, and not President Biden?
What about asking him why he was tooling around with the authoritarian leader of Hungary?
It does seem like, even prior to the shooting this weekend, the press has wrapped trump in a protective gauze as ridiculously oversized as his ear mattress.
He’s not even the sitting President, but many members of the press have granted him immunity from asking him any fucking questions.
They’re even allowing non-doctors to accuse President Biden of having dementia, while saying that trump DOES NOT — and not an iota of pushback.
Once again, it’s a disgraceful display of burying Biden under an avalanche of insipid inquiries and bullshit while extending utmost deference to a would-be dictator who plans to lock many of them up if he wins.
And they are shamelessly helping him.

I pointed out that he’s gotten more good stuff done than any other president in my adult lifetime, if you include a role in the ACA. I then walked them through the infrastructure bill and his resuscitation of the Dept. of Labor, but after that, my jet-lagged brain started shutting down. Might’ve had something to do with the 2nd martini kicking in, too.
In any event, could someone direct me to a handy list of the super things Dark Brandon and President Biden+Veep Harris have gotten done?
Thanks.

I didn’t care. Just wanted trump gone.
Four years later, things are different.
I wasn’t expecting that President Biden would be the most legislatively successful President in my lifetime.
I wasn’t expecting him to help expand NATO.
I wasn’t expecting him to lower insulin & inhalers.
I wasn’t expecting him to create & recover 15m jobs.
I wasn’t expecting him to bring manufacturing back.
I wasn’t expecting him to forgive student debt.
But he did ALL those things, and more.
He surpassed my expectations by a lot.
And he has more planned for 2025-2028.
He’s not a master orator,
He doesn’t move so smoothly
But neither did FDR from his wheelchair.
Meanwhile, trump is STILL a threat. He wants to be a dictator.

It may have been better for Nancy to have retired entirely from Congress if she can’t do that anymore. She has stresses over her husband’s condition. Possibly over her own aging as well. I don’t care about her lipstick tone, whatever it was was fine. I worry about the bra strap.

@$8 blue check mistermix: I haven’t been heavily in statistics in a long time, and never did think the “statistics” in polling was very good mathematically. The “margin of error” that is quoted ad nausium is, if I read it right, the sampling error. Sampling error is the probability that the sample you are examining does not represent the population you are sampling from. Your methodology could still be as ludicrous as calling Readers Digest subscribers on landline phones and have a 2 or 3 % “margin of error”.

@pacem appellant: Thank you!
I get a kick out of Felonious D being delusional enough to believe he can win Minnesota, please proceed to waste your money. I completely believe that we will stay nice and blue here and Senator Amy K will cruise to reelection.
