If you like seeing baby goats cavorting, you must must MUST check out Sunflower Farm Creamery.]
They’re a goat farm – dairy, not meat. They have a whole herd of baby goats every year, most of whom go to new homes. And they have a policy that people who adopt their baby goats have to take at least two, so no goat gets lonely.
They became Internet Famous back during lockdown when they posted videos of dozens of baby goats running out of the barn in the morning, and videos of baby goats in pajamas.
It’s wholesome, loving, gentle, and a real tonic in these parlous times.

My oldest son kept Boer goats for many years. At one point he brought me twin babies whose mother had died. We had to bottle feed them and take care of them until they were big enough to rejoin the herd. I have kept many different animals during my life, but I have to say the baby goats are among the cuddliest and cutest of all.

@Trollhattan: Most of the reason why we didn’t suffer the same fate as 2020 is because the reservoirs are full. In 2020, we’d lost a fuckton of hydro generation that even the (very impressive quantity of) batteries haven’t fully covered, but this year we have the benefit of both.
The state needs to add so much battery capacity and generation to cover EV load, though. We spent decades getting by on conservation and limiting electricity use, but now that the state is looking to replace gas appliances with electric and EVs, there’s no ducking having to build out generation/storage. Costs for PG&E customers is going to be astronomical. We should have let them fail rather than let them gouge ratepayers to cover their lawsuits.

My ex brother-in-law and his wife do a lot of animal rescue. One of their animals is a disabled goat who has to be kept in the house overnight (I’ve forgotten the reason, but he isn’t/wasn’t safe in the barn overnight). @WaterGirl: I would be surprised if they moved real quick, but I do remember some interesting points Harry Littman brought up. Harry’s been great when on his own, but has a nasty tendency to have podcasts where MSM types repeat their narratives to minor polite pushback from Harry.
When Trump was convicted of multiple felonies, Harry was very interesting about that. He says that Trump likely has no idea what he’s in for, in that he must meet with his probation officer and comply with the requirements of the court or be imprisoned. This other court may well be able to require things of him as well.
The problem there is that he and the RNC have clearly gone all in on criming and insurrection, so it becomes one of those things we’ve seen all along: people seem to behave like it’s the court’s job, or Garland’s job, to run in and shoot the miscreant in the leg, and that’s not how any of that works.
Instead it’s more about Trump digging deeper and deeper holes for himself, and further incriminating himself, while the millstones of the law grind deep.
I don’t think conspiracy by Supreme Court Justices to immunize him from crime is really a way to lastingly do an end run around The Law, or to just flip it off like a switch. I think these people are counting on being able to suddenly establish an insane, horrifying theocratic dictatorship in which all the tyrants mistrust and fight each other, and use THAT to get around the law, and then they expect it to actually STICK. It’s underpants gnome revolution.
That’s my thoughts on seeing the case stripped from Cannon. Bear in mind also that this one is the very case in which I think it might seriously reveal that Trump’s been working for Putin the whole time, and is wildly traitorous, stealing shit for his master like some evil golden retriever. (if there could be such a thing: nah, catastrophic metaphor fail).
And it has not been killed. Double jeopardy did not attach, and I’m given to understand Cannon’s circuit wanted very badly for her to step down due to her obvious, debilitating, humiliating bias that had already seen her reversed.
If it IS possible for the court to act rapidly, we’ll probably see that. I think it’ll move with deliberate speed and care.

A bad series of thunderstorms that went through Monday evening knocked out power for several hours. Then power went down off and on all night, for periods anywhere from momentary to an hour. It really put the battery backup to our solar system to the test. There was one power blip where the battery just did not come on. Fortunately power was only out for about 10 minutes that time. But that was the only failure. Every other time, our emergency panel, with refrigerators, freezer, computers/internet, TVs, kitchen/bedroom/bathroom circuits were all on. No AC, alas, but we did have ceiling fans.

Washington state is facing a shortage of hydro power by 2030 (don’t quote me, re. date) Because of cheap rates there are lots of Dara centers moving in. There’s lots of potential for solar PV but winter days are very short. Fortunately for eastern WA, where the data centers are being built, winters are cold which means less need for expensive cooling. Batteries or power storage that lasts six months would be ideal.

According to the reports I’ve seen it was a glancing blow to the inside tip of his ear. Bleeds a lot there and it may have taken some skin from the inside of the ear so there will be bleeding. He did get shot at not a too distant range, it could have been a lot more serious wound and will likely bleed for a bit of time. And of course bleeding time is also based upon the patient’s health at the time of the incident and the patient’s particular bleed rate, BP and how much actual damage was done. Without seeing the wound and knowing the patient’s history and health none of us know all that much more than we see in the press, other than some areas of the human body bleed a lot more than others. I’ve been stabbed in the forearm with a fork, over 1/2 inch deep and I didn’t bleed at all noticeably or internally and I had/have zero scar and the pain was mostly anger at the person with the fork. But no vessels were breached, no muscle or nerves hit. I also worked for many decades in machine shops, where cuts/wounds were regular occurrences. If you can cut metal, you can cut humans. Never had a major wound, can’t recall seeing one but they do happen. Also worked part time as a hobby 30 yrs in motorcycle racing and full time for a decade. I’ve seen a lot of blood leaking out of bodies and what and how the wounds were caused.

@kindness: Virginia does not register by party so all our primaries are totally open. You just pick the ballot for the primary you want to vote in.
I think Republicans and Democrats stick to their own primaries by and large. Independents* can influence either party’s primary result, and can be tie-breakers when the regular party members are split.
I don’t think that has created practical problems for Democrats here. We tend to unify around consensus candidates, and don’t put much energy into intra-party fights. We’re like, what does Tim Kaine think?
* The Wason Center regularly polls Virginia registered voters and among other questions they ask people to self-identify as to party affiliation. The results are fairly stable over time, with Democrats around 35% and Independents around 32%.
Republicans come in around 30 or 31%. This is a comeback from the February, 2021 poll showing them down to 26%. That poll was taken 5 weeks after the January 6th attack right across the Potomac.
Foungkin’ Youngkin helped the comeback, I think. His win was a big morale booster for Republicans here.
Fun Wason Center fact: Rachel Bitecofer had a big role in their poll design when she was on the Christopher Newport University faculty. She left CNU in the Spring of 2020.

Just speaking from personal experience, I don’t buy the idea he or anyone will be at 100% in a week. I know many people in their 30s and 40s who were flat on their back from COVID (even with Paxlovid in many cases) for a month or more. Some were back to 50% after a week, but it still took a month to really recover, and many ended up with long COVID.

I worked in motorsports for as I say above 40 yrs, 30 part time while I worked and full time for the other 10 yrs. I’ve seen pretty much all kinds of wounds, blood, guts and the insides of hospitals. And memorial services. We often would visit participants in the hospital to see how they were doing and how the injuries were caused to see if we could lessen the human damage. I also owned a machine shop or worked in one for quite a few decades where injuries were common, mostly minor but not always. Minor being clean, disinfect, bandage, major in either being an ambulance ride and hospital stay or a memorial service. Fortunately that last step was rarer than one might think. But not never, especially in the motorsports side.

Finally, it is not lost on the many Black voters with whom I’ve spoken directly that we would have NOTHING, not a right to vote, or to own property, or to get an education, or to sit at the same counter with other races for a meal—not one civil right whatsoever—if those who fought before us and FOR us had walked away from the fight because they didn’t like our odds, if they had resigned themselves to defeat because we were outnumbered, if they refused to put full weight and energy behind a candidate because they were flawed or weren’t aligned on every issue or would have to be carried across the finish line. WE, who only breathe a modicum of free air today because of the grit and determination and resilience and never-give-up overcoming spirit of our ancestors, are made in THAT mold. As our @VP often says—it has ALWAYS been a fight. The time is now to take the stance of those who are on the right side of history and know it. Those who want to leave the earth better for our children—in country where they are both safe and free.

Maybe he gets through this without a problem, but it’s not a given.

I say Biden steps down temporarily under terms of 25th amendment, like Poppy Bush did.
If he’s healthy, he reclaims the job after the two weeks or so a complete recovery might take. Then he hits the campaign trail rested and with maximum goodwill from a public happy he has recovered. Unlike Dump, most folks like Biden personally.
Harris gets to be acting president for that time, boosting her profile with the American public. And all the dump Biden movement gets stuck on hold.
Sure the dump Biden movement may get louder at first (old guy with Covid Cooties!) but it just might also f—k up the pre-scripted narrative because our dimwitted mass media is just not fast on its feet.

@rikyrah:
10000000% this.
I was not drafted, I enlisted. Did I really want to? I’d have to say no, not really.
But. The cards that we are dealt are often not the cards we want.
But. The cards we have are what we have to play.
People of color often get, even still, the shitty end of the stick. It is better today than when I was born, which really was not much different for hundreds of years prior to that. We hired a man to be president who was part black. We hired a VP who is black. Now both of them have other bits of background but then so do many of us. Reportedly my grandfather was a mafia enforcer in Sicily who was asked to leave because he was too good at his job. Now he died of a heart attack well before I was born so there is zero possibility to check the truth to this but it, like everything else that has already happened, is at least possible history.
OTOH, history is NOT the future. We can make it better, we have to make it better. We have made it better. My sister was gay and one of her partners was a black woman. She was a very good friend of mine as well and I knew her long after she and my sister split up. She died of Sickle Cell. Because I believe that the doctor that supposedly treated her did jack and shit for her. The white doctor. Now I’m not sure she could have been saved and I’ve studied medicine a fair bit, but still – he did jack and shit.
My entire point is that we are ALL humans. We are not all good, decent humans. But the only thing we can do is make this a better place. And that is by doing what the founders of this country wanted. Do Better, Be Better, Be An Actual Human Being, because everyone who is an actual human deserves to be treated the same, like a human, like you want to be treated, no matter skin color, no matter the genitalia, no matter the genitalia you like, no matter the century.
It has gotten better in my lifetime, it still has a ways to go. Let’s not support assholes like shitforbrains who want to set time backwards centuries. We’ve come too far to fall or run backwards.
End of rant.
