Just spent last week driving through South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana to visit my daughter in Indianapolis. Except for being plugged in to the internet and following things on my own, you would never have known there is a presidential election right around the corner. My wife and I counted one giant Trump billboard and two bumper stickers the entire trip…no MAGA hats, no shirts, nada (and nothing at all of Biden anywhere). Really weird with the RNC going on and the only news we ever saw was Saturday/Sunday after the shooting. (Side note: construction everywhere – roads, apartments, business centers…I’ve never seen so much going on in every state we passed through)

Sure would be nice for the media to ask republicans why democrats shouldn’t be able to choose their own candidate at their nominating convention. I don’t mean that I want a brokered convention or for Biden to not be the nominee. I mean that it’s beyond ridiculous that republicans should have a say (through lawsuits) in which democrat should be on the ballot. Every democrat should be pointing out how pathetic this is.
It reminds me that in the republican lawsuits that attempted to turn over the election in 2020, none actually claimed fraud. Every one was essentially a complaint that changes in voting laws made it too easy for eligible voters to vote.
The Kropenhagen Interpretation
@cmorenc: It would do voters well to remember that the President isn’t the whole government.
Once accounting for the VP’s ability to step up at a moment’s notice, we have offices up and down the ballot that are making decisions closer to your daily life and which may produce extra enthusiasm to show up to vote.

It has occurred to me that Democratic leaders are just as vulnerable to MSM shenanigans as we are. And maybe, Schiff panicked first because of his personal experience being threatened and having to be evacuated.
In a way, this is why we have a loooooong political season, and I see no reason to shorten it as long as people come out of near-nowhere and manage to become President.
And perhaps this is especially true of actors who are sponsored in the role. Let’s say.

@The Kropenhagen Interpretation:
Another constructive approach would be to figure out: what assumptions by normies might have been broken last night that were lubricating their grumbling slide by a few but critical % toward Trump in swing states? I doubt that Trump-ward slide was a happy one, just an assumption that somehow Trump would be better-able to fix the inflationary squeeze in the economy. Keep in mind, this observation isn’t based on whether that assumption is correct (it isn’t) but rather the fact that it was stubbornly there. Until hopefully last night.

This is something that democrats failed to note for years, or noted in clumsy ways (“You didn’t build that”). I think Biden has been better about explicitly crediting the good things the govt does, but it’s going to take a long time to break through to people who have internalized Reagan’s “I’m from the gov’t” bullshit.
Enhanced Voting Techniques
Going by conversations with people , that was the normie impression before the debate.
“This dude is fucked up” was the reaction of the focus to Trump debate night.
We had good news that night, some people ignored the debate was Donald “Death by sharks and batteries” Trump and Joe “Whose for Ice cream” Biden and instead imagined it was Romney verses Biden.

The takeaway from last night’s disastrous speech was that Trump is incapable now of getting in front of a mic and sounding coherent and even ‘normies’ are going to be creeped out by the guy. It’s the same thing here. People talk about it, it gets attention, so he keeps going on and on and on about it.
Plus, he’s incapable of learning anything actually related to the real world, so once something gets stuck in his head nothing else can enter.

@WereBear:
I have no idea. But from my experience (as a sysadmin/engineer/network/security guy over the years) here is how it “should” work.
Your first area is development where you develop these things. Then it’s moved into a staging area which is a replication of your production area. This can be wiped, rolled back, whatever. Then you have all sorts of comprehensive testing. Once this is all validated and signed off on it gets moved into production where it hits everything.
Cutting corners on this leads to massive issues. Bricking iPhones via an iOS update is one thing. Being an IT security company and bringing down the worlds second largest (and for business the largest) cloud provider is one hell of a fuck up.
I have no idea what happened here but as the sysadmin running these sorts of servers/environments in the past for developers I’ve seen management rush things through for reasons over much protesting.
Ken
@JWR: It reminds me of another recent incident where a Certificate Authority [short version, a company that creates the credentials that let computers securely talk to one another] had issued some certificates incorrectly. Security standards require these to be revoked promptly, but the company said they wouldn’t, because doing so would shut down airports, hospitals, government agencies, railways, the electrical grid….

Since the post-debate meltdown, I have been having a mild freakout. Not because of Biden — other than I was pissed that he blew a golden opportunity to put the “but he’s TOO OLD!” shit to rest — but because of the MSM-driven panic, which too-fucking-many Dems bought into, and then helped amplify the FTFTFNYT’s preferred “message.” I’ve been thinking about what a a second TCFFG Maladministration would do to the country and the world, and it scares the shit out of me. Add to that the powerlessness of being unable to get the MSM and “leading” Dems to SHUT THE FUCK UP and STOP pushing RWMF TALKING POINTS exacerbated my freakout. [For me, guachi’s and Cacti’s persistent “truthtelling”/doomposting can be annoying, but they’re not the problem, just a symptom thereof.] I’m an old, straight, white male, who is relatively financially secure, so my worries (for myself, that is) are relatively small. But there are people I know and love who would be in danger.
So seeing this post [thanks, AL!!] is helping move me away from the ledge. I’m still stressed about the whole “Dump Biden” movement, but I hope TCFFG’s performance last night helps move the needle back in a big way.

Guys, the reason why Trump keeps bringing up Lector is because people criticized him for bringing up Lector. He gets obsessive about things when that happens. @trnc: Right; almost any of the established commentators do not want Trump (trolls and new commentators are well a different story) they just believe that with Biden that Trump is almost inevitable and I don’t even know that they are wrong because the media has been in a frenzy and it appears that a lot of Democrats have fallen into that so it may be self-fulfilling prophecy at this point.
It’s not like we can run multiple scenarios and choose the best outcome; I’ll support Biden and if he does step down anyone who is the nominee because well the alternative is the current GOP and it’s malign clown of a Pontifex.
I will say that what tiny bit of trust I had for the Democratic donor class prior to this has been absolutely shattered. They really are only modestly better than the GOP donor class (still important) and I trust their judgment less than I would a rando off the street.
Part of their freakout almost certainly comes from the fact that the Democrats have been actually putting policy in place that is more than the most anodyne fiddling with the margins that the Donor Class is comfortable with.
And it’s particularly frustrating because we can not afford infighting at this time. A second Trump term might now be the actual end of Republic (you can reconstitute from that but it’s hard and by no means guaranteed to succeed) but it will at best be very bad. Which I’m sure is fueling the intensity of the current discourse.

Adam Schiff, who’s apparently heavy into crypto and should not have won against Katie Porter, is a name where it’s not a lie that he’s acting against Biden and the only sensible plan. As yet I have not seen other names of significance actually confirmed, but I’ve seen everyone up to Obama and probably Jill Biden linked to ‘allegedly’, ‘according to people familiar with his thinking’, and so on, because you’re meant to freak out. None of that requires even the knowledge of the people who are named.

The problem with the hand-wringing of the Dump Biden school has been reiterated too many times, but here is my (hopefully moderate yet strong) criticism:
I would argue the outstanding problem in today’s politics isn’t the policy end (which is important but often receives too much emphasis within the Democratic / liberal / left end of things), but what I would call the deep personal character problem within the Democratic Party.
Loyalty (very much including personal loyalty) is incredibly important. You don’t knife your allies in the back when they stumble. This tendency is a severe character problem, and shows that considerable parts of the Democratic / liberal / left continuum simply don’t have the character traits to be in solidarity with others (i.e. do not in some sense have even the most basic levels of political awareness they should have gained in high school.) It is unlikely that they will develop these traits in any reasonable amount of time, and that means that our coalition is fundamentally considerably more weak than it could be.
The Dump Biden school going to respond with some version of “we’re not a cult.” But, again, since the Dump Biden school had their own responsibilities to step up at the many earlier appropriate points along the way (if they thought they had a concrete better candidate than Biden) but did not. That was their responsibility as citizens if they thought this. They did not do so. (In fact, only one credible candidate ever stepped forward who could defeat Trump, Joe Biden.) Now their responsibility at this point in time is quite otherwise, and avoiding the realization of that fault will continue its damage upon their own characters. And that fault will continue to severely weaken the coalition.
The Dump Biden school needs more to be recognized or seen as right as individuals than to be politically effective, or even function within any sort of coalition. That’s why we had every sort of ridiculous pundit opening their mouth, when their “ideas” are (mostly) secondary or tertiary, if we wish to be polite. Their characters are full of vice and they cannot truly be in a political coalition – i.e. they are precisely the exact opposite of political people, because the essence of politics is building coalitions, not usually winning personal acclaim or personal attention for having your personal right opinion. That’s why they continue to post various things instead of doing what is necessary (doing, not posting, not writing, not tweeting, not gaining personal status for being memorable on social media or the traditional media.)
This is not a secondary problem, but indeed the primary one. If the Dump Biden school had such weak characters they could not stand firm when others needed them to, they are the weak members within the coalition and the problem within the coalition, and ultimately, we must weed them out if they cannot reform or refuse to reform themselves.
Now they are running around, praising themselves for “being right.” Again, this underlines their lack of political being – the political question is never “am I personally right” (you have one vote, you personally are almost always irrelevant as a single individual) but whether I can build an organization that embodies that. You can’t build an organization where people are always looking to take down others so they can be praised for “oh look at me, I was right!” That’s not a political role, and that’s the opposite of what we need those people to do.
If they were out there actually doing something to BUILD towards their favorite candidate, that would (or at least theoretically could) be extremely valuable. (I.E. Imagine someone saying: The Draft [XYZ] Committee has 512 field offices, and 350,000 volunteers! We’ve done A, B, C through P! Etc. That is real organization, and might even come in quite handy even if [XYZ] herself is not successful.) Instead…..they bug people on message boards or write piffle in some media, usually without having done a thing to even concretely select the [XYZ] and absolutely never have done anything whatever to build a collective Draft [XYZ] effort.

@WereBear: I don’t believe that Schiff panics and I don’t believe this is about the media barrage. I think Democratic candidates are under massive pressure from major donors to come out against Biden, and that pressure is intensified for Schiff since most of those donors are in his state.
burritoboy
Shalimar,
Again, pay close attention to organization. Is Schiff building anything or is he just conveying whatever the donors are saying? This is a severe political test for him – his real first at the very major level that he clearly very much desires to be at. I believe that if he is merely conveying what the donors are thinking / pressuring without taking his own personal political responsibility in that equation seriously, he is simply not fit to be able to handle the very serious nature of being a Senator from California. There will ALWAYS be tremendous donor pressure if you are a Senator from California, HOW you USE that is critical. Passively accepting it is not permissible.

@schrodingers_cat: Wonkette has been fine. Their commenters dismiss the trolls with ease and get on with the business of ranking TCFG. Robin’s spent the last week at the convention pointing out the cray-cray. They aren’t getting pulled into the loop because their front pagers just don’t post anything about it. They are focused and know who the enemy is. They plenty of ammo to work with and are happy and even gleeful.

@burritoboy: Nice. That’s a great analysis. One would imagine if you were building a rival organization, that would involve public work, and heading a faction that was able to GOTV and handle campaign business, ideally in 50 states. I’m not hearing a lot of talk about the great alternate campaign network that’s holding out for a change in plan. Or ANY alternate campaign network. Hell, the Republicans don’t even HAVE a campaign network, they just have Charlie Kirk now.
SomeRandomGuy
You raise a point. And I’d like to expound on that point.
I’d like to send a big fuck you to every single one of those cowardly, pathetic wastes of breath.
No, really. I’ve been told how fucking sacred human fucking life is, and that *I* don’t get to die, just because I’m in unending, excruciating pain that makes my life entirely pointless. You know how much work that takes, day in and day out, through each and every moment when life chews the fuck out of you again, for being a weirdo who can’t even talk half the time?
*YOU* cowardly fuckers go all pants pissing because OMG you’re going to have some fucking ANXIETY for a couple-three months? You know what happens *AFTER* Biden wins? YOU pathetic pusillanimous pissants get to LIVE A NORMAL FUCKING LIFE.
THREE FUCKING MONTHS OF ANXIETY! And you’re all “oh, no, I can’t do that, not for Joe Biden, no, kick his ass to the curb, kick him in the nuts, staple a kick-me sign to him, because OMG HE HAS OLD MAN COOTIES!!! That means we have to something SO STUPID that NO ONE HAS EVER THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD IDEA BEFORE EVER EVER EVER!
How could someone really be this painfully stupid? To take a Republican attack line, and just run with it? Because they’re oh, so SCAAAAAWED. GROW THE FUCK UP. LIFE IS SOMETIMES SCARY.

@SomeRandomGuy:
The irony being that Biden leaving won’t stop the anxiety as all kinds of new reasons to be anxious will appear.

@me: You’re sure not wrong. I am glad to see, from the tweets above, we were once again reminded who shlushesh hish wordsh in the middle of speaking, so the actual person with the family history of dementia, who is acting more and more like he has dementia, and who is actually showing signs of a problem affecting his neurology, gets a bit of focus on him.
Oh, yeah, and I understand that Republicans are trying to blame Democrats that the Shoe Lift God Emperor wouldn’t let himself be moved until after it was proven he’s pathetic about his height, and yes, wears shoe lifts.
I mean, how stupid can you be, to have secrets from your body guards? If you have shoe lifts, your body guards know you have shoe lifts, so they can say “it’s all taken care of now MOVE!” while members of the investigation team confiscate any guilty-looking falsies left behind.

@artem1s: Thanks I will check it out. I haven’t been there in a long time.
