Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Republicans in disarray!

Petty moves from a petty man.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

He really is that stupid.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

This fight is for everything.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

The willow is too close to the house.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Apparently Ohio just removed 160,000 voters from the voter rolls.  I guess Ohio wants to be more like Georgia, but let’s not let them get away with it.  Or maybe they’re already worse than GA about voting, but they want to cement their slot.

It’s only 160,000 voters, who cares?

That’s about 2% of the registered voters in Ohio who just had their ability to vote taken away.

How many races have we seen in the past few years where the results are that close, or closer?

Also apparently, time is short sf you know anyone in Ohio, please reach out today and ask them to verify that they are still on the voting rolls.

Ohio Secretary of State’s Office where you can check to see whether you have been removed or not.

This is is purged people:     https://registrationreadiness.ohiosos.gov

This one is to confirm that you are still registered:  https://voterlookup.ohiosos.gov/voterlookup.aspx

Shouldn’t voter roll purges be done a year or so out rather than 3 months out?  What criteria do they use?

@cmorenc: One would think so, but when they do this, the goal is to remove the voters they don’t want, so logic has nothing to do with this.

If they have to purge for good reasons, then 3 notices should be sent to the people who will be removed, with an easy card to mail back to say they still want to vote, and a URL they use to do that electronically.

Unfortunately, that will never happen because, see point #1.

I just watched this and have never seen anything quite like it on the subject.

    Insurrectionists Among Us

The January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol was, for many, proof of our nation’s hopeless polarization and the danger of unchecked radicalization. But who were these people who stampeded through the halls of Congress, and what motivated them? How can we build understanding so that we can disrupt extremism before it takes hold?

@WaterGirl: yeah, i know my question was rhetorical about the short timing and no notice, but still they have to use criteria that are on their face neutral but in fact tend to disproportionately target suspected blue leaning voters.

@cmorenc: On the Sec of State site, it says that purged voters can “be restored” by following instructions on the site by July 22nd.

July 22nd?!?! That’s just two days away.
The media in Cincinnati has carried no stories about this voter purge, at least as far as I have seen.

I don’t have a Bluesky account, and thus can’t access the link to sign up to help notify purged voters. Does anyone have a non-social media based link that they could share?

Typically for these assholes, the linked SoS site is set up in a deliberately confusing way- your search turns up a result only if you’re on the list of registrations that are about to be deleted. You need to use a different page to confirm that you’re registered.

@WaterGirl: Of course, they didn’t specify a deadline hour on July 22nd, in order to make it even more confusing for voters. Typical underhanded Ohio Repub move.

On closer re-reading, I think the “by July 22nd” date is to avoid being completely purged – as in “”you’re on the list and we are going to purge your registration unless you can miraculously  navigate our intentionally confusing and glitchy site over the weekend,  while our office is closed and no help whatsoever can be obtained”. If voters on the list can’t MacGyver their way through the confusing text and glitchy site this weekend, then they will be officially purged at some unspecified point during or after July 22nd.

After that unspecified removal time during or after July 22nd, purged voters will have to go through the full process required to re-register to vote.

    Infuriating!!

Folks, I was just cc’d on an email and briefing memo (a multi-page plan) going around among Dem insiders from someone connected in that world. It’s an actual memo that lays out a primary they want to do at the DNC. It’s deeply unserious, ridiculous in fact. And they want to dump Biden and bypass Harris or at least put her into some sort of primary process where Oprah and Mr. Beast (yes, the youtuber) and other randos will host forums with the candidates.

The first list doesn’t have my dad listed. That is the about to be purged list?

The second list says he is “okay” at my address, which would be weird because he had been in a nursing home since 2017 and never lived at my house, although we did file a change of address for mail. He hasn’t voted since the change of address and we kept ignoring the postcards from Sec of State. Is that saying he is okay to vote?

That would be weird because he died in April and has a death certificate from this county. He had been a registered Republican, he mostly voted Democratic.

If he is still on the rolls that would be very very fishy.

It’s good you’re (and everyone else) is checking.

When I was in Chicago for college, many moons ago, we moved a few times.  The last time I voted, I saw a list with my name that still had 3 previous addresses on it.  I let them know, but I figured that it costs time and money to actually do the purging.

Plus, I figured that Chicago was still trying desperately to hold on to the “Second City” title (lost it to LA on April 7, 1984), so they weren’t going to do anything to any list that was related to population.  But that was just a guess on my part.

I never, ever considered trying to vote 3-4 times, because why?  3-4 votes almost never makes a difference, and it would take hours, and plus it’s like ILLEGAL.  In-person voter fraud is a trumped up [heh] problem.

We all know that the GQP is trying to stack the deck in their favor because they know they cannot win fair elections.  We have to keep doing the work so that they don’t succeed.

    VOANews.com:

    SANAA, YEMEN —

The Israeli army said Saturday it has struck several Houthi targets in western Yemen following a fatal drone attack by the rebel group in Tel Aviv the previous day. The Israeli strikes appeared to be the first on Yemeni soil since the Israel-Hamas war began in October.

Several “military targets” were hit in the western port city of Hodeidah, a Houthi stronghold, the Israeli army said, adding that its attack was “in response to the hundreds of attacks carried out against the state of Israel in recent months.”

Houthi spokesperson Mohammed Abdulsalam wrote on social media platform X that Yemen was subjected to a “blatant Israeli aggression” that targeted fuel storage facilities and the province’s power station. He said the attacks aim “to increase the suffering of the people and to pressure Yemen to stop supporting Gaza.”

Abdulsalam said the attacks will only make the people of Yemen and its armed forces more determined to support Gaza. Mohamed Ali al-Houthi of the Supreme Political Council in Yemen wrote on X that “there will be impactful strikes.”

A media outlet controlled by Houthi rebels in Yemen, Al-Masirah TV, said the strikes on storage facilities for oil and diesel at the port and on the local electricity company caused deaths and injuries, and several people suffered severe burns. It said there was a large fire at the port and power cuts were widespread.

Health officials in Yemen said the strikes killed people and injured others but did not elaborate.

The drone attack by Houthi rebels killed one person in the center of Tel Aviv and wounded at least 10 others near the United States Embassy early Friday.

    […]

I wonder if the timing of the drone attack and the response has anything to do with Bibi’s speech to Congress on July 24. Like the Houthis expecting a big response and Bibi demanding unconditional support from the US yet again.

    This stuff is complicated.

We really, really don’t want to turn US foreign policy over to the monsters again.

@trollhattan: The Houthis have been firing missiles and drones at Israel since October 17, but the IDF and US Navy ships in the Red Sea shoot most of them down. The drone that hit Tel Aviv is one of the few to get through, and the first to kill someone. So I think Israel’s attack on Hodeida was retaliation, not the opening of another front.

US forces try to suppress Houthi forces preparing attacks on shipping but that’s like playing whack-a-mole. We mainly try to shoot down drones and rockets heading for civilian shipping, our own ships and the smaller number aimed at Israel.

The idea is to “manage” the threat because we expect the Houthis to end these attacks when the war in Gaza ends. The US might take stronger action if they don’t, but we’re trying not to tear Yemen up too much because their destructive 10-year civil war finally came to a halt last year and we want to keep it that way.

@Kristine: Made me look some more…

    Wikipedia – Diamon Anvil Cell:

    […]

The NBS group was in a unique position where almost endless supplies of diamonds were available to them. Customs officials occasionally confiscated diamonds from people attempting to smuggle them into the country. Disposing of such valuable confiscated materials could be problematic given rules and regulations. One solution was simply to make such materials available to people at other government agencies if they could make a convincing case for their use. This became an unrivaled resource as other teams at the University of Chicago, Harvard University, and General Electric entered the high pressure field.

During the following decades DACs have been successively refined, the most important innovations being the use of gaskets and the ruby pressure calibration. The DAC evolved to be the most powerful lab device for generating static high pressure.[15] The range of static pressure attainable today extends to 640 GPa, much higher than the estimated pressures at the Earth’s center (~360 GPa).[16]

    […]

In 2002, scientists at the Carnegie Institution of Washington examined the pressure limits of life processes. Suspensions of bacteria, specifically Escherichia coli and Shewanella oneidensis, were placed in the DAC, and the pressure was raised to 1.6 GPa, which is more than 16,000 times Earth’s surface pressure (985 hPa). After 30 hours, only about 1% of the bacteria survived. The experimenters then added a dye to the solution. If the cells survived the squeezing and were capable of carrying out life processes, specifically breaking down formate, the dye would turn clear. 1.6 GPa is such great pressure that during the experiment the DAC turned the solution into ice-IV, a room-temperature ice. When the bacteria broke down the formate in the ice, liquid pockets would form because of the chemical reaction. The bacteria were also able to cling to the surface of the DAC with their tails.[24]

Skeptics debated whether breaking down formate is enough to consider the bacteria living. Art Yayanos, an oceanographer at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography in La Jolla, California, believes an organism should only be considered living if it can reproduce. Subsequent results from independent research groups[25] have shown the validity of the 2002 work. This is a significant step that reiterates the need for a new approach to the old problem of studying environmental extremes through experiments. There is practically no debate whether microbial life can survive pressures up to 600 MPa, which has been shown over the last decade or so to be valid through a number of scattered publications.[26]

Similar tests were performed with a low-pressure (0.1–600 MPa) diamond anvil cell, which has better imaging quality and signal collection. The studied microbes, Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker’s yeast), continued to grow at pressures of 15–50 MPa, and died at 200 MPa.[27]

    […]

    (Emphasis added.)

The Challenger Deep apparently has a measured pressure of 123 MPa. Life could keep going even at that depth…

    Amazing stuff.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

Today’s update (whatever the hell day it is): Most of the ceilings towards the back of the house are being removed Monday. The U-boxes came today and we are filling them. I got a room at the Hampton Inn just a mile away during one of the busiest weekends of the year! Insurance is paying for that and hopefully we’ll be in a rental unit by Monday with the pets. The garage has some pretty bad structural damage so I’m not sure where we are there. It’s possible that the entire roof front and back needs to be replaced. We have plenty of boxes thanks to some very fine friends! We are doing alright. Part of me wants to head out and help around town, but I’m quickly brought down to earth. There’s plenty to do. It’s just one foot in front of another. No need to send money as I would probably squander it on running shoes and beer. you!!!

I live in a small house with a husband and a pitbull and five cats.

We have an upstairs bedroom that used to be my office. Sort of a storage room. Nobody goes into it. Cats, being cats, are of course. extremely curious.

That is it. All my secrets.

@sab: Personally I find the smell of a stale room that has been locked.for a long time to be quite interesting. It’s probably all trapped subtle shit you wouldn’t notice unless it had time to aggregate; paper, wood, adhesive, and germs. But there’s a scent.

Mostly I have too many clothes. Between marriage and Covid I have plumped up a lot ( i.e. got fat.) Clothes I used to love do not fit. Plus my mom’s stuff. I hate to let go. So there they sit and rot. House-moving we all have to let go of stuff. My stepdaughter-in-law accepts buttons. Old clothes not her size, not so much.

Perspective. Ohio is slightly bigger than Scotland and twice Scottish population. We aren’t big but we aren’t small. But we do vote as if every last one of us is stupid.

So the Republican solution to the Secret Services’ fuck up is to…. you guessed it… defund the Secret Service.

You can practically hear them screeching, “DEFUND! DEFUND!” like Daleks.

If this is OK in this thread, I would like to point out that Trump appeared at a rally in Michigan with no bandage of any kind on his right ear. It looks perfectly fine and intact.

@Eyeroller: A friend watched the rally; a long litany of lies, way over an hour’s worth. By the hour mark people’s eyes were starting to glaze.

It was his standard stump speech for the most part but two things caught my friend’s eye: Trump tried very hard to distance himself from Project 202, like his camp knows the Project is a liability. And Trump said we are very close to World War 3 but he could prevent it.

Secret Service flagged after Musk shared a video of TCFG killing Biden.

Trump-endorsing billionaire Elon Musk, the richest man in the world and the owner of the social media company once known as Twitter, received criticism on his own platform on Saturday after sharing a video showing an animated Donald Trump killing Joe Biden.

Musk over the weekend took to his own platform, now called X, to share what he deemed to be the “best AI video to date.”

The video shows Trump, as “Neo” from The Matrix, stopping bullets in mid-air and then fighting an “agent” AI-generated to look like Joe Biden. Trump then kicks Biden to the ground before jumping inside the president’s body until he explodes. Trump-Neo is left standing and flexing afterward.

Multimedia journalist David Leavitt flagged the development, saying, “Elon Musk shares ai video of Donald Trump murdering Joe Biden in a plagiarized Matrix scene.”

In a separate post, Leavitt tagged the U.S. Secret Service and asked, “Why are you showing videos of Donald Trump murdering Joe Biden?”

He’s been asked by several to remove the video; I’m sure he’ll oblige… 🙄

@Jackie: If he weren’t a billionaire that would have landed him in jail. Plus as an immigrant that would have sent him back to South Africa. We have had Ohio immigrants deported for much less.

ETA Why is Elon Musk still allowed to live here? He just threatened our president.
