I was just hoping somebody would produce a version of the Downfall meme for TFG’s response to President Biden’s selfless announcement, and by Murphy the Trickster God it is gonna be very hard to top this one!

    That is funny.

Related:  I watched the entire movie Downfall probably 10 or 15 years ago.  Most of the main characters were seriously fucked up people.

@Fair Economist:   Well the film came out in 2004, so no longer than 20 years.    I think there were a few Bush themed ones, but the parody captioned clips seemed to really pick up with Trump.

As I recall, that bunker scene was near the beginning of the movie.  One might have thought it would be more towards the end, given that Hitler is seeing that defeat is near.

@raven: @WereBear: it was inevitable.  It was a damn assassination attempt that missed due only to luck, and the Secret Service’s MAIN function — certainly their only one on that occasion — is to make sure things like that don’t happen.  Somebody had to fall on their sword, and she was pretty much the only one senior enough to do it.

And yes, there were and are many stories about the Felon turning his detail into a hand-picked Praetorian Guard of dubious actual quality, and of course he’d have a thousand of them around him every second if he could and I’m sure was constantly bleating for more more more, but it doesn’t change the calculus one bit.  They screwed up bigly.  Hopefully this puts an end to it.

Most of the ones are very ‘inside baseball’, thus very context specific like you mention vis a vis the Air Force.  But if you’re in-the-know on the subject, I’ve never seen one that wasn’t a home run.

Downfall is something everybody should watch once, very well done, very insightful and just as J Arthur Crank noted above, even tho it’s a dramatic portrayal, the portrayal of the Nazi inner circle is dead on.  They were seriously fucked up people knowing that if they got caught, they’d die for what they’d done.

Tbh, that whole agency needs to be scoured. The stories of corruption, incompetence, and enormous security lapses over the last few years are mind-boggling.

Not to mention how many of them are Trumpies. Which is not simply a matter of supporting a different Party than the President, but supporting someone who attempted – and is still plotting – to overturn the government.

Remember, very early in President Biden’s term, he switched out practically the entire Secret Service team assigned to him in favor of the agents who had been with him as Vice President.

@Belafon: It isn’t about convincing Trumpers it’s about the wobbly voters who don’t want an old person, regardless of party. If “he’s too old” was their top issue, but they were undecided, those are now much more gettable voters.

People have weird singular issues in this country. If we can exploit any, we should. And clearly “old” was a driving narrative already. If we flip that against Trump effectively, where his team gets hounded with it (especially after the bizarre rallies we can expect), great.

Not only have the ignorant hick religious bigots lost the abortion debate they are now losing it ever-more bigly.

“Around 6 in 10 Americans think their state should generally allow a person to obtain a legal abortion if they don’t want to be pregnant for any reason, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. That’s an increase from June 2021, a year before the Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to the procedure, when about half of Americans thought legal abortion should be possible under these circumstances.”  — AP July 9, 2024

    @Jess:

In one of her speeches, MVP Kamala Harris referenced a saying from her mother, “Did you just fall out of a coconut tree?”

It is a very common South Asian/Caribbean saying, when used kindly it means “can you not think?”, when used unkindly, it means “boy are you dumb!”. She was using to preface that tons of work in the past got progressive programs to where they are now, and tons of work in the future are required to get them to where we want them to be now.

The K-Hive, has adopted the coconut emogi as a symbol of where they “stan” on social media.

The coconut however, is problematic. It is a slur in many communities, used both inside and by outsiders. It means white on the inside, brown on the outside.
