I was just hoping somebody would produce a version of the Downfall meme for TFG’s response to President Biden’s selfless announcement, and by Murphy the Trickster God it is gonna be very hard to top this one!

That is funny.
Related: Â I watched the entire movie Downfall probably 10 or 15 years ago. Â Most of the main characters were seriously fucked up people.
WereBear
That was immensely satisfying. One of the best Downfalls ever.
WereBear
@J. Arthur Crank: Why do you think the WWII channel never ran out of material?
raven
US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has tendered her resignation amid scrutiny of security lapses related to the recent assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump, sources tell CNN.
Fair Economist
How long has this Downfall meme been going on now?
Leto
@Fair Economist: near 20 years. We had Air Force versions of it, and goddamned were they funny. Very context specific, but we laughed hard.
WereBear
@raven: I saw five minutes of her responding to questioning and figured this was how it would end. Maybe we will learn more now?
Renie
I love when people do this. BTW with so many comments over the last few days, I’ve not been able to keep up here but what happened to Baud? Definitely miss seeing his comments.
J. Arthur Crank
@Fair Economist: Â Well the film came out in 2004, so no longer than 20 years. Â Â I think there were a few Bush themed ones, but the parody captioned clips seemed to really pick up with Trump.
As I recall, that bunker scene was near the beginning of the movie. Â One might have thought it would be more towards the end, given that Hitler is seeing that defeat is near.
bbleh
@raven:Â @WereBear: it was inevitable. Â It was a damn assassination attempt that missed due only to luck, and the Secret Service’s MAIN function — certainly their only one on that occasion — is to make sure things like that don’t happen. Â Somebody had to fall on their sword, and she was pretty much the only one senior enough to do it.
And yes, there were and are many stories about the Felon turning his detail into a hand-picked Praetorian Guard of dubious actual quality, and of course he’d have a thousand of them around him every second if he could and I’m sure was constantly bleating for more more more, but it doesn’t change the calculus one bit. Â They screwed up bigly. Â Hopefully this puts an end to it.
JPL
@bbleh: Yup.  I only saw a small amt of the hearing yesterday, and it was awful.

comrade scotts agenda of rage
@Leto:
Most of the ones are very ‘inside baseball’, thus very context specific like you mention vis a vis the Air Force. But if you’re in-the-know on the subject, I’ve never seen one that wasn’t a home run.
Downfall is something everybody should watch once, very well done, very insightful and just as J Arthur Crank noted above, even tho it’s a dramatic portrayal, the portrayal of the Nazi inner circle is dead on. They were seriously fucked up people knowing that if they got caught, they’d die for what they’d done.

He was banned.
Either that, or he’s traveling.
danielx
I’ve read that Hitler was capable of frothing rage that would make Trump at his worst sound like a two year old having a tantrum.
WereBear
@Renie: He is shopping for a pantsuit. To show solidarity.
WereBear
@danielx: But you know what really scared me? The accounts of his boring monologues while everyone else struggled to stay awake.
So many parallels…
Marcelo
I want one that’s of the NYT and WaPo reporters realizing there won’t be a Thunderdome convention and that everyone is getting behind Kamala instead.

Leave it to CNN to post a top-line article: Harris off to a strong start: why that could be a problem for herâ. Â I wish that was parody, but itâs not.
Sean
I remember when these Downfall parodies were done for almost every significant event, political or not, in the mid aughts.
They don’t get spread with the same ferocity they did back in those days when we had less to consume ourselves with online. This was a nostalgia trip on top of the topical today humor.

You could say that about Churchill as well.

I have a background in mathematics, so my favorite Downfall parody has Hitler learning Topology. It’s spot on. Hitler Learns Topology
TBone
@Belafon: well, they’re the ones watching Perino. I only report the news, I don’t make it (much đ).

@raven:Â â
Tbh, that whole agency needs to be scoured. The stories of corruption, incompetence, and enormous security lapses over the last few years are mind-boggling.
Not to mention how many of them are Trumpies. Which is not simply a matter of supporting a different Party than the President, but supporting someone who attempted – and is still plotting – to overturn the government.
Remember, very early in President Biden’s term, he switched out practically the entire Secret Service team assigned to him in favor of the agents who had been with him as Vice President.
Cleaning house altogether would be good.
lowtechcyclist
@cmorenc:
Yeah, the parody would finish up, “why that’s good news for John McCain.”
TBone
@Villago Delenda Est: đđ
TBone
@CaseyL: Major and Commander biting them was *chef’s kiss.
Sean
@Belafon: It isn’t about convincing Trumpers it’s about the wobbly voters who don’t want an old person, regardless of party. If “he’s too old” was their top issue, but they were undecided, those are now much more gettable voters.
People have weird singular issues in this country. If we can exploit any, we should. And clearly “old” was a driving narrative already. If we flip that against Trump effectively, where his team gets hounded with it (especially after the bizarre rallies we can expect), great.
Dorothy A. Winsor
@TBone: Cry harder, Dana.
CaseyL
@Rick Taylor:Â â
That was great fun. You don’t have to be a math student (which gods know I am not) to appreciate it.
A billion students through the ages suddenly feel heard.
Bill Arnold
@Belafon:
This is not about cultists. It is about peeling off hundreds of thousands of voters in swing states.
Voters who might get concerned that the GOP candidate is an elderly, pathologically narcissistic convicted white-collar felon, with clear signs of some sort of progressive dementia, and that his chameleon VP choice is an amoral Christian supremacist, who is probably devising/plotting a Trump-specific 25th amendment plan with Peter Thiel.
Andrew Abshier
@CaseyL: As I understand, a number of the agents in his VP detail had retired, but came out of retirement to serve Biden as President.
That still doesn’t totally explain why Major and Commander kept biting them.
CaseyL
@Andrew Abshier:
“Believe dogs.”
More seriously, German Shepherds take guarding their families very seriously. The WH – where strangers come and go all the time – is probably not a good place for them.
Central Planning
@danielx: Have you seen a two-year-old have a tantrum? I’m not so sure Hitler could have a worse one :)
Jinchi
I assume Kamala has reached out to ask if he’s interested in a job that’s opening up.
Geoduck
@Belafon: Why do people keep trotting that out like it’s some hot fresh take. As always, it’s not the damn Trumpites that we need to reach, it’s everybody else.
EDIT: I see it’s been covered already, but the point stands.
JaySinWA
@Sean: Right. To the extent that “double haters” are real, this is a way to engage them
ETA I’m not sure all the double haters are motivated strictly by they were both too old, but it knocks one leg out from under their stool.
Belafon
@Geoduck: The biggest reason for me is that I think the number of undecided people who are going to be affected by that are near zero, in part because I don’t think the media is going to run with it. Also, it goes back to my thing that it’s Democrats that get scared of stuff like that not Republicans.
Jinchi
Right wing media pushed the “Joe is old” narrative relentlessly, and it shouldn’t be a surprise that a lot of their viewers came to believe it was a serious problem. Trump was only insulated because he was “their” old guy.
Now he’s “the” old guy.
It’s kind of like the “mail-in ballots are fraud” nonsense that convinced so many R’s to stop doing it in 2020.

Not only have the ignorant hick religious bigots lost the abortion debate they are now losing it ever-more bigly.
âAround 6 in 10 Americans think their state should generally allow a person to obtain a legal abortion if they donât want to be pregnant for any reason, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Thatâs an increase from June 2021, a year before the Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to the procedure, when about half of Americans thought legal abortion should be possible under these circumstances.â â AP July 9, 2024

What’s with the references to the coconut tree? I feel like I didn’t get the memo…
Sean
@Jinchi:
Exactly. That’s my hope, anyway. WaPo started in with “Trump faces fresh scrutiny on his age and health.” A good start. Maybe the Trump camp will be the dog that caught the car. Can’t really count on the media to push like they did with Biden since Trump is their benefactor, but they clearly loved the “old” narrative and Trump is…pretty fucking old it turns out. We’re in uncharted territory, but that’s one argument we can fervently push.

@Jess: I didnât get the memo about the mattress.

@Jess: Two versions. One is comment 59. The other is Kamala Harris’ mother used to say “did you just fall out of a coconut tree? ” to scold her kids for being naive or otherwise not sensible.
Wapiti
@Jess: The context from an interview:
âMy mother used to â she would give us a hard time sometimes, and she would say to us, ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?’â Harris said with a laugh. âYou exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you,â she continued.
Jay
@Jess:
In one of her speeches, MVP Kamala Harris referenced a saying from her mother, “Did you just fall out of a coconut tree?”
It is a very common South Asian/Caribbean saying, when used kindly it means “can you not think?”, when used unkindly, it means “boy are you dumb!”. She was using to preface that tons of work in the past got progressive programs to where they are now, and tons of work in the future are required to get them to where we want them to be now.
The K-Hive, has adopted the coconut emogi as a symbol of where they “stan” on social media.
The coconut however, is problematic. It is a slur in many communities, used both inside and by outsiders. It means white on the inside, brown on the outside.

@CaseyL: Agreed.German shepherd puppies are very active, alert and serious about being dogs but they have too much energy and no judgment whatever until well past two years old. And any rescue dog is going to have issues. My nine year old staffie still goes upstairs to bed and sucks on her quilt to console herself if I scold her.

@Central Planning: I bet the two year old knows fewer German swear words than Hitler did.

As far as I am aware, none of the instances broke skin or required medical care.
German Shepherds are known for nipping, and it has to be trained out of them, which is hard to do when they are still young.
sab
@Jay: Agreed. I was given a German shepherd puppy who used to playfully shred 18oz (heavy duty) jeans while I was wearing them. Just funning. I used to cry in frustration. “I do not want this fucking maniac of a dog, however much she loves me.”
Two years later she was the best dog I ever had, and my stepsons admit they only put up with their new stepmom because they loved that dog and wanted her to be their dog (which she was.)
WereBear
Herding dogs herd. Cattle dogs are ankle nippers. My Malmute/Collie mix favored the strategic goosing.
