Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

People are complicated. Love is not.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

In after Baud. Damn.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

He really is that stupid.

House GOP leaders urge members: Stop making race comments about Harris https://t.co/p0Pw89m6uy

— POLITICO (@politico) July 23, 2024

Just look at Pastor Mike’s expression — he’s torn between terror and glee. Politico, “House GOP leaders urge members: Stop making race comments about Harris”:

House Republican leaders told lawmakers to focus on criticizing Vice President Kamala Harris’ record without reference to her race and gender, following caustic remarks from some Republicans attacking her on the basis of identity.

During a closed-door meeting Tuesday morning, chair of the House GOP campaign arm Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) and others issued the warning after a series of comments by their members that focused on Harris’ race as well as claims she is a “DEI” pick, according to two people in the room…

But several Republicans immediately took the criticism in a different direction. Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) said Monday that Harris was a “DEI vice president” and Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-Wis.) over the weekend questioned if Democrats are sticking by her “because of her ethnic background.” If nominated, Harris would be the first Black and South Asian woman to be a major party nominee.

The remarks about Harris’ race have privately infuriated some Republicans, who feel it shifts the spotlight back on the GOP instead of Democrats’ missteps.

One House Republican, granted anonymity to speak candidly, said Republicans who made comments about Harris being a DEI pick, which stands for diversity, equity and inclusion, needed to stop.

“We have everything going our way and you just can’t handle that?” this member added. “We’ll give you a cheat sheet if you don’t know what else to talk about.”…

And the right flank is facing additional pushback from their Republican colleagues beyond the race comments. Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) introduced a second impeachment resolution against Harris on Tuesday, according to a copy of the measure obtained by POLITICO, an effort some of his colleagues have already panned. His first attempt to impeach Harris last year stalled in the Judiciary Committee.

Republicans are also more openly admitting that their long-stalled endeavor to impeach Biden is likely dead. Miller said it’s time to move on.

“I think that we can redirect our resources elsewhere into something that will be more fruitful. If we had anything to level against him, it already would have been exposed and we would have impeached him. That obviously hasn’t happened,” he added.

House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.), who has led the Biden impeachment push, told POLITICO that while he is probing questions about Biden’s mental health — focusing on the White House physician and three White House staffers — that he has no plans to subpoena Harris or ask her to appear in front of his panel.

“No,” Comer said when asked whether there is a potential probe into Harris
…

If Jim Comer isn’t diving for the spotlight, there’s no safe spotlight for which to dive.

The New York times appears to believe they know how to win elections better than the people whose job it is to win elections. This fits journalists’ tendency to believe their own viewpoints above those of experts in every other field.

I read her book in 2020 and was recalling that she didn’t pass the bar on the first try, which apparently is not unusual in California.  But I’m sure it will come up at some point.  This is from a USA Today article I found via search.

“California has a notoriously difficult bar exam. In 1985, the Los Angeles Times wrote that its pass rate “has generally hovered around 50%.”

Harris graduated from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1989.

Even now, the pass rate on the California Bar Examination averages out to approximately 50%.

In February, just 40% of “first-timers” passed, per a report by the State Bar of California. In July 2019, around 60% of “first-timers” passed, per another report.”

Johnson: We’re not going to make racist statements about Kamala Harris.

House GOP:  HOLD OUR DIET MOUNTAIN DEWS!

When asked about @KamalaHarris candidacy, @HagemanforWY calls @VP a “DEI hire.” “Intellectually, just really kind of the bottom of the barrel…I think she was a DEI hire. And I think that that’s what we’re seeing, and I just don’t think that they have anybody else.”

Takes a bottom of the barrel House member to make that kind of statement.

My wife went down a serious rabbit-hole for young pop-star Chappell Roan last night and played me several of her songs when I got home from work.  OMG, I love her!!  Her music is pop for sure with a sound similar to Taylor Swift, but a bit more edgy, sexy/sex+, and an unabashedly LGBTQ version of Girl Power and youthful rage.

This song, My Kink Is Karma is just wow!!  Her videos and aesthetic/vibe are also super-cool.  I can see why she’s all the rage right now with young people (especially under the LGBTQ umbrella):

The elected GOP in 2008 mostly kept their racism underneath a (thin) veneer of plausible deniability, leaving the nasty overt stuff to right wing bloggers and the like. Today’s GOP makes the George W Bush and Tea Party era Republicans look sane and measured by comparison. And that’s both impressive and terrifying.

As a stepparent, this brought tears to my eyes:

The ex-wife of second gentleman Doug Emhoff on Wednesday defended Vice President Kamala Harris against sexist criticisms about her lack of biological children, calling them “baseless” and expressing her gratitude for the presumptive Democratic nominee.

“These are baseless attacks. For over 10 years, since Cole and Ella were teenagers, Kamala has been a co-parent with Doug and I,” Kerstin Emhoff said in a statement first provided to CNN. “She is loving, nurturing, fiercely protective, and always present. I love our blended family and am grateful to have her in it.”

@UncleEbeneezer: I was never a big Pumpkins fan, but their song called Eye from the Lost Highway soundtrack is sublime.

@KatKapCC: Totally.  In a different kind of “kooky” do you know Tank & The Bangas?  Lead singer Tank combines spoken-word poetry, rap, quirky-playful antics and a HELLUVA voice to lead an amazing band.  She’s another one, like Roan, who’s just a natural star because she’s so damn captivating on stage.  This medley of two songs is a really great example of her greatness, though be warned it’s 14 minutes long.

@Turgidson: DEI has become the rallying cry of inadequate inferior white people who desperately need an excuse for why any black person could possibly be smarter or happier or more successful than they are.

@Omnes Omnibus: I also had to take the Patent Bar exam in order to do the type of legal work I wanted to, and that was also a tough one. The Patent Bar is odd in that it requires science/engineering qualifications and you can actually take it without having a law degree (passing the exam without having the law degree/admission results in becoming a patent agent which lets you practice patent prosecution before the USPTO, but not law in general). I probably made a mistake in taking the Patent Bar exam while I was still in law school, which I think dropped my GPA for that semester.

@MattF: What’s happening now? No one knows, no one has any authority.

Serious answer? Between polarization, gerrymandering, and candidates’ theatrical pandering to wealthy donors, the GOP’s ability to rein in their officials is limited.

They can’t turn off all the money any more, and threatening with a moderate primary opponent isn’t going to work.

@Omnes Omnibus: We loved T&TB so much about four years ago, but they’ve really gone in a much more pop/radio-friendly direction since then that we lost interest.  The Balloons albums tunes were just really repetitive and didn’t have the amazing complexity of their first album and early material.  They went from a truly unique concoction of jam/funk/soul, and almost prog-rock to fairly straightforward pop.  Sad because they were absolutely incredible when we saw them with Big Freedia (a ridiculously fun show).  I think maybe the loss of one of their keyboard players (Merrell) may have gutted their songwriting team.

That “DEI hire” also won elections.  Statewide elections.  She was hired by the voters of the state, or as we say out here in woke California, elected to office.  No doubt the GOP thinks it was a conspiracy of millions.

Donald Trump will say he won California except for the cheating Democrats. So yes.

    DEI is the new woke.

New woke will be about as successful a rollout as new Coke.

@Kayla Rudbek: I worked with a guy who had practiced law before becoming a programmer. I think he went back to patent law after a while. Anyway, while he was in software, he wrote specifications like legal briefs, with dozens of footnotes.
