Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

I really should read my own blog.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

So many bastards, so little time.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

It’s just possible—maybe, hear me out, please—that Donald Trump may, in fact, be an angry, bitter, aggrieved old man who’s been watching lots of cable and is pissed off that someone else is getting attention. I know that would be a shocking conclusion to reach https://t.co/HNrsQgR89t

— George Conway (@gtconway3d) July 25, 2024

Is our media… turning?

Rep. Crow to Fox: I'm a combat veteran. I know fear and fatigue when I see it. Trump is acting tired and afraid. Someone needs to wake him up. I know he has a hard time staying awake. He fell asleep repeatedly at his own convention and criminal trial. Someone needs to wake him up… pic.twitter.com/VgvvprrLCM

— Kamala HQ (@KamalaHQ) July 26, 2024

imagine how mad and confused trump is right now. he should be coasting to victory on the momentum of miraculously surviving a failed assassination but instead everyone’s talking about the unlikable little pervert he chained himself to lmao

— molly conger (@socialistdogmom) July 26, 2024

Also Trumpworld's ability to anticipate which GOPers' statements, actions, etc. might catch on in a damaging way is severely blunted by the fact that Trump has already been skating on saying/doing much worse shit for the past nine years.

— Peter Wolf (@peterawolf) July 26, 2024

another thing about jd (that i recall josh mentioning in his pod episode that discussed potential trump vp choices) is there's a meanness about him that fits in with the donald trump worldview

— Ilker Erbil (@ilkererbil) July 26, 2024

…but there's another contingent of voters who may not have strong feelings about Harris one way or the other *and* who don't think Trump is an existential threat…but who are JUST SICK OF HAVING HIS BIG, STUPID, MEAN, BULLYING VOICE & FACE EVERYWHERE FOR THE PAST DECADE.

— Charles Gaba ?? (@charles_gaba) July 26, 2024

Also worth noting:

A. Vance is probably the most pro-Putin stooge in the Senate

B. Trump announced his running mate four days after meeting with Viktor Orban https://t.co/COejuzklUA

Was reminded of an angle of attack that Harris will avoid. She didn’t seek out nomination – Biden asked her to take over. She’ll largely avoid the ‘too ambitious’ attack that women usually face, as Clinton did.

Biden has secretly been manipulated by one or another woman since he was inaugurated, in the right wing alternative reality.  Harris won’t avoid any attack.

    @Martin:

Also she wasn’t involved at all in the discussion of whether Biden should step down. I feared the allegations of her knifing Biden if he did, but she’s left no basis for it. Not that that’ll ever stop the Republicans and the FTFNYT, but it helps.

T had her CT scan today, so we will know in the next few days, what stage her Cancer is at, and what the likely treatment plan is. Tomorrow, she flies off to Edmonton to see her parents, her BFF’s Bun and Bob, and her bestie from High School, whom she hasn’t seen in decades.

I am staying home, plants need to be watered, and I have no love for her parents or them for me.

It has been my experience that even rescue, one of the most selfless hobbies a person can stumble into, has a Trumper segment.

These are very nice people as long as we talk about rescue subjects, but trying to apply the principles of rescue doesn’t hit at all.

They never think that if Project 2025 happens nobody is going to have extra money to feed their pets. A lot of people are going to have trouble feeding their children, but that is never their concern.

Rescue is something they do to feel good about themselves.

They have gated communities in their minds and this works for neighborliness about the same way gated communities in Florida work: they don’t. The kids don’t even play at each other’s houses, these communities are so paranoid and friendless.

If that’s the future, I dread everybody doing good things… only as long as it suits them.

They have been doing ALL the favorite sports metaphors.

    In a lot of people’s minds… we’re the Cubs.

But Kamala and her team will get the word out, embarrass the corporate media, and shame them into occasionally committing journalism.

Apparent flow to more independent media still in progress. A shift is happening.

And if we win because the opposition could not help making fools of themselves, okay. No one else is bringing that to public attention.

Every step the R’s took to make it a cult and not a US political party, they shed people into “Independent.” It’s not noticeable because they still vote R significantly, but I think it’s significant they won’t identify with it so closely.

In perception studies, the closer a witness is to the person they saw — in terms of age, race, class, gender, etc — the better they can recognize them in distinct ways.

Seniors see a group of young people and they see a group of old people. There’s not a lot of differentiation going on.

It’s possible that for people who go by feelings more than facts, having people easy to distinguish might actually make them pay attention.

The “difference” light in our brains is now lit and working. People are paying attention.

    July 27, 2024 at 5:52 am

@Chief Oshkosh: I think EU countries also lagged the US in their recoveries from the Great Recession. And our recovery then was fairly slow, slower than it would have been had Democrats been able to enact an adequate counter-cyclical spending program.

As for the Covid recession, Democrats deliberately implemented a program of “trickle-up” spending, first with the $1.9 trillion American Recovery Act. Then we added the Infrastructure, CHIPS and IRA bills.

Both the ARA and IRA were passed by the Senate with a 50+1 vote. Infrastructure and CHIPS passed with “bipartisan support;” they had to because they did not fall within the Reconciliation rule. Both bills received around 20 Republican votes in the House despite the Minority Leader’s opposition.

We got our counter-cyclical spending in early and that is how we avoided a recession this year. The last three bills could buoy the economy for the rest of the decade, especially the CHIPS and IRA bills.

Those two are not spending bills so much as investment incentive bills, and are projected to spur trillions of dollars in private investment. That is one reason I believe that if we can hold the White House and retake the House of Representatives this November, we’ll hold them through the next 10 years.

I should hope that there are a large number of older women out there sitting quietly, waiting; we remember the 50’s, we remember before Roe V Wade, we remember not being able to get credit, we remember and I/we don’t want our granddaughters, great granddaughters to fight the same fights we fought. Yes, we won but the GOP is bent on taking it all away; we don’t want women to call the police for abuse and be told not their problem because a man can do anything to wife.
I made one of those calls and was told until he killed her the police couldn’t do anything.
This is the world the GOP is working to bring back, a world of abuse if you weren’t white man; I am old enough and I remember what it was like, I lived in that world I don’t want anyone to live in that world and more than anything I would do anything to stop my granddaughter and great granddaughters from having to live in that world.

It’s hard to infer much from such limited personal experience, but there are a lot of crowds nearly everywhere we’ve been. We have also seen more “transitional” parts of towns, where businesses have closed, and housing is an issue in every city we’ve been to as well. Republican’ts select lickspittle VP’s worthless for succession purposes, the main reason the VP exists in the first place.  They cannot grok that the Democratic Party would have a fully capable presidential candidate BACKUP ready to go, because that’s the very GD purpose of having a VP.  Democrats do not elect lickspittle VP’s, and never have.  We had SOME Democrats that did not get this, but I had faith that Biden did.  I don’t know about you, but I sat up and noticed how he picked one of the meanest fighters of the bunch to be his VP.  SAY IT IS SO, JOE!

I think we’re underestimating the power of good memes. This whole couch-fucker thing is obviously not real, but the sense that Vance is just kind of icky and weird is accurate! And they get shared so fast, and for free! And they’re often really funny! The campaigns that use them well, even if they’re just picking up on unofficial stuff….. that’s a sign of having smart people working for you, I think.

They run on their feelings. And they never liked Vance. Who on earth thought they would? People who have no feelings, and don’t get the signal from their nervous system to smile, leave the area, and block the host’s number.

I saw one yesterday of Kamala dancing posted by the opposition.  In reality on planet Earth, it simply made her look cool 😎 and happy

Remember when the GOP tried to dunk on Beto O’Rourke for skateboarding, and instead everyone was like, “Um, he looks cool as hell, and fun, and hot”? They did something similar with AOC and an old video of her dancing in college. Like….. y’all. She’s beautiful and fun and the only reason y’all find that scandalous is because you’re repressed and awkward.

    From my Common Cause email:

… I have great news: President Biden has just taken a crucial step towards firing Trump administration holdover and Republican megadonor Louis DeJoy as Postmaster General. [1]

By nominating former Rep. Val Demings as the final member of the USPS Board of Governors (as well as another pending nominee) required to get rid of DeJoy, President Biden is showing he’s heard what you and thousands of others across the country have demanded – that he take bold action to save our Postal Service.

As you know, the current Postmaster General, Louis DeJoy, has a history of undermining vote-by-mail and the USPS at every turn. That’s why, since Biden took office, we’ve been urging him to fill vacancies on the Board of Governors needed to remove DeJoy – since the president can’t fire him on his own.

Thanks to your action, the President finally has put forward the nominees who can get rid of DeJoy.

We took on this fight knowing it was an uphill battle – with DeJoy hoping to steal away our right to vote by mail without us noticing. But now, our collective action and persistence have finally paid off.

Not only have we forced DeJoy to postpone his attacks on vote-by-mail until after the 2024 election [2] – but now, if the Senate confirms Demings to the USPS Board of Governors, he could be out of a job entirely!

With this step forward, we have the momentum to guarantee that our USPS will be safe from DeJoy’s schemes for good. And I’ll be in touch soon with updates about the confirmation process – because we’ll need your help to urge the Senate to take swift action to save our Postal Service.

In 2016, Barack Obama was very careful not to endorse a primary candidate before the Democratic convention, or at least before the nominee was a completely foregone conclusion. He was following modern tradition for a second-term incumbent President. But I remember it leading to a perception that he was cool on Hillary Clinton as a candidate and maybe even preferred someone else (VP Biden was not running).

    @Suzanne:

My mom has been enjoying the memes and said “people are having fun again”.  She had a very successful career and I think aside from being wicked smart, she made work fun.  Her laugh is even bigger and more outrageous than Kamala’s.  My oldest is really pleased about Kamala and said that she comes across as a joyful warrior.  It’s good energy and obviously has fired up Democrats.  My middle son said that in 2016 the country took a sharp reality shift into a very dark place and that Kamala signals a turn back into a better reality.  His wife has loved the Kamala memes for years because they are so fun and sometimes silly.  They actually watched her rally speech and fell in love.  Also, the population is changing.  My DIL is half Korean.  When they married they incorporated traditions from all sides into the ceremony.  Their friends are diverse, they had men and women their bridal party – if you thought all the women were in the bride’s party you would have been wrong.  And this is how the millenial and zoomers are.  The worse the attacks on Kamala are, the more creative and mocking the response will be.

I laughed my ass off when I saw the Ikea “notfurfucken” couch with chaise.  Instructions not included!  Vance is toast.  They cannot match the creativity and fun of the youngs.

I was checking out the Times of Israel and saw this headline:

Poll gives Kamala Harris slight lead over Trump in head-to-head race.

US VP’s 44% national support to GOP nominee’s 42% is within margin of error, but she opens up.a bigger gap over him in a three-way race.

The TOI is citing a Reuters/Ipso poll.

Besides reports on the fighting in Gaza and up north with Hezbollah, there were articles about the Israeli Olympic team. Israeli female judokas qualified in all seven weight categories, something that only Japan and Italy also managed.

There was also a story on Thursday’s White House meeting between Israeli hostage families, President Biden and the Israeli PM:

The families read aloud a prayer urging Israeli leaders to “accept responsible proposals” for a ceasefire at the end of their meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu and US President Biden at the White House on Thursday, participants told the Times of Israel.

    The prayer reads:

“May it be Your will, Lord our G-d and G-d of our forefathers, that you send your Light and Truth to the Prime Minister, ministers and advisors of the government of the State of Israel, and guide them with good counsel.

Enlighten their eyes to accept responsible proposals placed before them in order to bring about the release of our loved that are hostages. Father, our King, help us to bring our captives from darkness to light, so that we may be crowned with the crown of victory and life, and let us say: Amen.”

@Geminid: It had been too painful to look at polls up to now, but I’m belatedly doing it. All it’s really possible to say right now is that it’s close–it’s suddenly become close. That may be all we can ever really say.

Unsurprisingly, the polls with the biggest Republican house leans are really flooding the zone. The most prolific one is, a bit ironically, HarrisX (I remember them from 2016 and 2020).

@Martin: you are thinking fairly and logically. Forget that. It might take a few weeks though. The attacks against Hillary and other women for too much ambition have almost never made sense or been fair. And they haven’t been received in peoples guts fairly either.

Also the longer they go on, the more low information voters and young not yet voters assume they are true.

I found out that liberals who were too young to watch the start of the Hillary attacks but grew up with them everywhere “knew that she was corrupt” without examining the facts, but where much more aware of the background of smears that started and happened to newer politicians after they got older. They could be very aware of how rumors worked and the need to know sources reputations and biases, but completely miss that it had been going on all along.
