Valued commenter Quinerly sent along this gem from American bluesman Keb’ Mo’ (featuring Roseanne Cash). I think it makes a great soundtrack for efforts to elect Kamala Harris in 100 days.

Not only is it about goddamn time we had a woman president in the U.S., I can’t think of a sweeter circumstance under which to usher in that massive change than for VP Kamala Harris to whup Donald Trump’s hideous old orange ass.

We’ll never fully scrub the stain of Trump’s 2016 Electoral College victory out of our national history. The rise of his oppositional defiant disordered cult is an ongoing danger to American democracy.

But Trump himself won’t last forever, thank dog. He’s a convicted felon who is pushing 80 and under indictment for a slew of serious charges that he won’t be able to make go away unless voters are dumb enough to sleaze him into office again. We’re the underdogs right now, but I don’t think we’ll let him do it again.

    So, I’m sitting here watching the US beat Serbia at basketball (a sentence which only exists in this reality because you can append “in The Olympics” to it) and a couple of things stand out.

    1) These guys are specimens of… something. They all look like they can cross the length of the court in one lolloping step, they’ve got shoulders you could land Combat Air Patrols on, and when you see them standing or even sitting next to a normal human the contrast is almost cartoonish.

    2) Haven’t got a scooby what’s going on. Really. The ball goes in the buckets, other than that they might as well be playing cricket.

    3) I miss the days of complete coverage when you could pop on the BBC and choose between a dozen events and watch them all, getting caught up in the whole contest from the start and dropping your jaw at regular intervals at how…. Olympian… these people are. Just amazing, and the truncated coverage takes that away. I don’t care how the presenters think the competitors might ‘feel’ about something the presenters want to obsess over, I just want to watch these incredible people doing incredible things with seeming ease.

    4) Street Skateboarding is astonishing, even more so when 90% of the competitors appear to have been foetuses last week. Seriously, kid, does your Mum know you’re here?

    Heh yeah, basketball has morphed into a pretty weird sport that can be mastered by something like 0.003% of humanity.

    In the States we get one freely accessible broadcast/stream and every other thing is paywalled, including events you actually wish to watch. I somehow finagled Japan-Brazil women’s futbol for zero dollars today, with the commentary in Spanish. Gooooooooooooalllllll.

    I remember skateboarding from Tokyo and every competitor seemed to be from middle school. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, they can crash onto pavement, leap up and keep going pondering whether they’d scraped up their tennies. I’d be a pile of bone chips.

    OT: I was so disappointed when I learned that Chicken & Waffles used breaded, fried chicken and not a sauce or gravy. Ugh.

    Thanks for all the kind words. JoJo has been wanting to make the front page here since he adopted me in February, 2020 while I was traveling. He knew my previous traveling companion, Poco, had hit the big time on BJ some years back with some front page pictures and with the shortlived Baud/Poco ticket and campaign.😎

    He’s been jealous. Thanks Betty for including him in this Keb’ Mo’ post.

I wore out the vinyl of Fagen’s first solo album  (Night Fly) in law school. Love “The Goodbye Look.” That song still makes me smile 40 years later. Reasons.

    @Suzanne: I really think he should be. He’s hands down the best communicator in the party when it comes to defending Democratic positions. He’s also from the midwest, he’s really good at talking about infrastructure and manufacturing and labor and all of the things that everyone thinks we need to shore up with white men.

    And yeah, he’s gay, but he’s not leather daddy dancing in a pride parade gay. He’s work hard and defend his family gay. And that really resonates with all men with a family. Yeah, you’re not going to get the hard homophobes, but you never were. 70% of Americans approve of gay marriage, and for an awful lot of people it’s because of guys like Pete that they approve.

    Put another way – there’s a lot of folks who are kind of squishy on gay people. They’re okay with Neil Patrick Harris (one of my daughters other choices for VP mainly for the Harris/Harris meme) but not so much with the flamboyant look-at-me gay community. To them, Pete is a role model, and a lot of voters like to support role models. That’s one of the bigger objections they likely have to Trump – that he is a terrible role model. And it’s one of the bigger adjectives attached to Obama. They liked Obama because he was the right kind of black guy with a picture perfect family. And I don’t know if there was some element of ‘if we elect him, maybe those kind of black people will try and be more like this guy’ or not, but I did kind of get that kind of vibe off of some folks. Hell, I have a gay friend who gives off that kind of vibe about trans people, and I have not figured out how to have the ‘what the fuck, dude’ conversation with him.

    @Tony Jay: Baseball is big in South Korea and a couple of Latin American countries but that’s about it. Canada has a couple pro teams but I have no idea if anyone plays baseball there. So maybe 8 countries total take it seriously. I think Cricket is bigger globally and that’s only big in former British colonies and not even in all of them.

    Ultimate is fun to play and while it’s not a major spectator sport anywhere I think it’s played in a lot of place recreationally. The game is played on the honor system – they don’t even use referees. You’d think that kind of sportsmanship would appeal to the Olympic Committee but I can see how I’m totally naive saying that with a straight face

    @BeautifulPlumage: no egg!  The best dish I’ve ever had was at a local watering hole named The Scarlet D.  The former proprietor was quite a gent and used to have a roasted peanut factory in the tiny town where his pub is located, a twin business.  So of course the floor of the pub was ankle deep in peanut shells most days. We’d throw handfuls around, shouting about NUTS!

    This pub was in a very old building that was an Inn (new owner has since ruined it) for weary travelers.  It had an old school wood burning cook stove with the stovetop lids.  The proprietor had his old school waffle iron going with an old school waffle batter and a cauldron of turkey stew bubbling on the stove.  Waffles were made to order right in front of you.

    Scarlet D owner also made the best oyster stew to order on that stove (served separately of course).  Oh those good old days!

    One of the most quintessentially Japanese moments I’ve experienced was a trip to the fabled Koshien Stadium (47K seats) to see a sold-out regular season game between the Hanshin (Osaka) Tigers and the Yomiuri (Tokyo) Giants.  Fans segregated by team waving huge banners while drunkenly singing the team songs, young women carrying kegs on their backs supplying beer and takoyaki (breaded fried octopus balls), various team and local mascots running all over the field between innings.  The Tigers won, so no Colonel Sanders statues were thrown in the Dotonbori Canal (don’t ask).

I saw them in the Sacramento area on the 12th with Eric Gales, Samantha Fish and Warren Haynes.     @Baud: Not at all. If you want to wait until the electorate is ready for a gay candidate that expresses their sexuality in any way they like, we can do that. The black community understands this dynamic. They don’t like it, and I don’t blame them, but we were better off electing Obama than waiting until we could elect someone who didn’t code switch for the electorate. I think it’s bullshit that the electorate is more likely to vote for Harris than Jasmine Crockett simply due to how they speak and look, but I feel pretty safe in saying that’s a true statement.

    The question is whether we’re better able to change minds by getting who we can get into office now, or waiting. I can tell you that Scott Wiener loses a LOT of support with voters even here in liberal California because he’s a little too visibly gay. I think that’s bullshit, but that’s the electorate, man, and if you want to elect a gay candidate, he’s a heavier lift than someone like Pete. I’m up for the challenge, but I’d rather the consequence of losing not be someone like Trump.

    I’m not selling out our values. I’m not suggesting that Democrats don’t back the LGBTQ community in every respect, exactly as they wish to be. But we have had how many conversations about how a guy who happens to live in a PA zip-code is a better choice than a guy who lives in a NC zip-code because the electorate in PA will respond to that candidate better. This is fucking electoral politics, man. If this is compromising our values, then every single conversation we’ve ever had about a candidate ever was a compromise of our values. We’re neck deep in we need a midwest old white guy because that’s what the electorate respects, and all that bullshit.

    I’m sorry for pulling forward the stereotype, but we know that’s what a lot of people are afraid of. We know that’s what they envision. I’m not making a judgment on how people express their sexuality, but if we can’t recognize that other people DO and those people get to vote, then I don’t know how we get people elected and work to remedy that.

    Pete is my first choice because I think if we want to come through for and elevate the gay community, he’s not just our best bet to do that as soon as possible, I think he’s better than the other people we’ve been discussing to win in general – I think he’s a better candidate than Shapiro. But a lot of that is because I think when he speaks on values and talks about his family and relationship, and when people look at his family, they will just see a normal family, just like the Obamas fit the stereotype of a normal family.

    Maybe I’m all wrong on this. And if I am, I’m sorry.

    Women’s volleyball play starts tomorrow. Twelve teams are divided into three 4-team pools; the top two teams in each pool willadvance to knockout rounds, as will the top two 3rd place teams.

    Italy’s team is 1st in world rankings and Turkiye is 3rd. Both teams are in Group C, and their match next Sunday could be a preview of the final. Turkeys “Sultans of the Net” were ranked 1st much of last year so this will be a game to watch.

    @Martin: Yeah, this is fair and accurate. I hate that it is, but it is. Especially if we’re also talking about things like “Harris was simply next in line and can dodge accusations of being too ambitious that are usually lobbed at women.” It’s all about maximizing appeal and sidestepping potholes. Some truths about electability are more hurtful than others, sadly, but they all generally suck.

    I’ve been on this blog for a rather long time and this is one of the best posts I’ve seen – and heard.

    And that is high praise for everyone involved here because this blog is, in my mind, one of the premier places on this concept of wide ranging human communications and has been for a long time now. Some have opinions that get them banned but far, far more have opinions and views that have opened up minds and brought on growth because of it. It is of course not the only blog online, but it is one that has existed, grown, and become home on the web for many of us beings called human.

    And it is because of bits and pieces like this one.

    I don’t believe I’ve ever said this before but, John Cole, all the rest of the authors and commenters – thank you, thank you, thank you all.

    I am on the retired side of life, and damnit I’ve earned it. Over 60 yrs of working life, mostly making tools that made plastic products that many of you have seen in your lifetimes. I hope to see at least another 25 yrs, just to break the century mark, and to be around to see this country grow the hell up – for all of us.

    And in that vein GO KAMALA HARRIS!
