Good morning, everyone!
I’m all in for Kamala Harris. When we do our budget for August, my wife and I are going to allot some money for donations to the campaign and Higher Heights. I’m also volunteering for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next month, the first time I’ve volunteered for anything like it. It should be interesting, to say the least.

Dear Gabriel Sterling,
That’s not the flex you think it is.

@Karen S.:
Good for you. It’ll be fun. There’s a ton of national Democratic politicians at the convention so you’ll have that odd experience of seeing someone in person who you have only seen on television over and over and over. They’re all in one place :)

Yet another reason to hate the FTFTFNYT: In an instance of something I expect would prompt SubaruDianne to shake her head: one of the “headlines” on the FTFTFNYT website starts out with “Racked by Pain, … ” It’s a story about a RWMF/MAGAt and the “miracle cure” he found.
[NB: In case it wasn’t obvious: I was highlighting that the phrase should be “Wracked by Pain …”]
Kay
I’m just not sympathetic to the claims that people are misunderstanding Donald Trump, given that JD Vance and Donald Trump say every single day that Democrats support post birth abortion with no pushback, at all, from media. JD Vance has been saying for a week that Harris opposes the expansion of the child tax credit. This is a lie. No one has called him on it. The incessant lying is finally boomeranging on them? Boo fucking hoo.
Eyeroller
I’m not trying to be a killjoy but how is it nobody remembers that there were pretty big golf-cart parades for Biden in 2020 in The Villages and it didn’t mean a damned thing for The Villages as a whole, much less Florida. That was mostly in October of 2020, however, so at least this is getting going earlier.
I’m actually a bit more optimistic about Texas than about Florida this cycle. Texas is always the big fish that just barely got away.
With regard to the latest atrocity, I am so tired of all the Trump Whisperers trying to “explain” what he “really means” or didn’t mean. Why not take him literally for a change?
Eyeroller
@SFAW: I no longer have a subscription so what was the miracle cure? A cloth Trump touched?

Voto Latino has a bad reputation among organizers. Supposedly the CEO is toxic and they have a ton of turnover and they’re not effective. I would be interested if they could verify that voter reg number that is all over Twitter. They’re really not known for registering voters. No one really knows what they do other than appear on MSNBC.

Rikriyah put up this fundraiser for a friend who is having health issues sometime during the week. I asked if she could put it back up on the weekend, and I don’t know if she did so I am putting it up. This type of fundraiser drives me crazy because the dollar amount is fairly low, but it is not quite met. Can anyone help out here?
Someone also suggested this song for everyone to listen to while you are participating in your organizing activities, and it meets the moment.

Yup, the women who experienced decades of Hillary attacks and have sat through *years* of people nodding along to “of course America wont elect a woman” in spite of her literally getting millions more votes that TFG, we are ready for Kamala.
Tony Jay
Ah, now, I was thinking just this morning while brushing my teeth (many times, extended family get together in Town, Australians, beer, bleaugh) that the very excitement and positivity around the Harris Campaign is going to have the Heritage Media fuming, and they’ll be up there in their corner offices brainstorming over what Narrative will best undermine Democratic chances and aid Stench and the Party of Hench.
One of the nasty ideas I came up with was pushing the idea that voting Kamala = Taking revenge on America for rejecting Hillary Clinton. They haven’t had 20+ years to shitty up Kamala, so the next best thing in their eyes would be to report on her through. Clinton 2.0 lens. After all, if Kamala isn’t out to redo 2016, doesn’t that mean she’s rejecting Hillary’s legacy? Wedges and smears and just asking questions, etc.
They’re also almost certainly working on a Narrative about Democratic overconfidence and how they’re taking the whole thing for granted. They’ll want to move the lens away from how Stench fucked up with Vance when he really needed a VP who could project a false facade of normality to the norms, especially now that his age and general physical unfitness for office is going to become a loud contrast thing, and J. D. Vance is the back-up plan? He’ll no! So spinning it around to claim that Harris and Co are taking the votes of Americans as their rightful due and being arrogant, that’ll be their line going forward.
Plus, of course, lots of ink spilled on the idea that Democrat Elites forced Kamala down the throats of a Party that desperately needed to hash things out at the Convention and she’s UNVETTED. Remember how only the Heritage Media had the right to decide if Biden had the right stuff to deserve another 4 years? Expect that dialled up to 11. Kamala Harris is a mystery to most Americans, it’s the duty and responsibility of the likes of the FTFNYT to tear down the curtains and show America who she really is, etc.
It’ll get ugly, because ugly is all they got.
JML
The “Kamala is their revenge” bit feels a bit off to me. It suggests that liberal boomer women intended this, and I’m not feeling that. Do I think they find Kamala inspiring and want to work for her? You betcha.
Here’s the other bit: I think there are also boomer women who feel like they let Hillary down and didn’t do enough for her. Because it was Hillary, who struggled with “likability”, was treated horribly by the press, didn’t have the same level of devotion, and got beat and blamed. (anecdotally, I’ve heard and seen this)
I hope women totally dominate the vote.

I am (somewhat) sympathetic to Vance for the truncated quote that is being used to indicate that he didn’t defend his wife from racists. I think it’s clear in the longer quote that he did defend his wife. I just don’t think we have to invent quotes. He’s a charmless lump who lies constantly. Nothing to do with his wife.

starting to see dark money anti-Kamala ads here in the desert southwest during Olympics viewing.
The tack here in 30 seconds scary imagery is that Biden placed Harris in charge of the border and her response has been “disasterous”.
so, going after low information voters with fear factor.. Looks like the same MO, with ads likely updated to substitute Harris for Biden (i.e. the time was already bought, just a swap out on the name of the target). The plan must be to sell fear again (in those places where those issues “work”) on the issue of their choosing, placing the blame on a failed policy that they refused to fix. Don’t expect much in the way of context from these ads, but I do wonder if a response ad showing that the DJT scuttled bipartisan immigration reform might work in that the GOP really doesn’t care about the border, they just want an issue to use.

Find out the hotel where your state delegation is staying (each state stays together) All your state pols will be there, holding court in the lobby. You can just go and mingle like you’re staying there.
My husband and I got into an elevator at the Ohio delegation hotel and there was an expensively dressed woman on there. My husband said “hi, are you a delegate?” and she said rather sternly “no, I’m a donor“. We rode the rest of the way in silence. You just have to sort of roll with it. That video from the Villages is wild. I had heard that FL might be in play this November. I was highly dubious, but now less so.
I don’t think we should do an McGrath/McConnell and go all overboard when there are a lot of competitive races coast-to-coast to fight. But this year feels like one where long-stuck places like Florida could get some Democratic mojo back. It’s a state party that, from what I understand, has been a mess for years.
I hope the little I’ve heard about Nikki Fried is true, that she’s doing good work!

North Carolina is the other perpetual heartbreaker where in Presidential elections, we are always 1 to 2% away from turning the state blue. A big factor in that is that the influx of red-leaning retirees from northern states to e.g. coastal Brunswick County so far almost exactly counter-balances the influx of blue-leaning younger voters in tech industries in more urban areas. And like elsewhere, the small towns away from more urban areas are full of the same sort of redneck yahoos who turned out for Jesse Helms 30 years ago and Donald Trump today – they live in a closed epistological Fox-addled loop and reinforce each other on Facebook. I grew up in one of these small eastern NC towns, and have known ’em close-up all my life., though I’ve long since moved to the Raleigh-Durham area (blue).

There is an entire group that has been defending Kamala Harris for 5 years now.
The thing is they have been heartened by all the youth that have caught on to the disinformation about Kamala and have stepped up.

@Kay: One dignificant demographic shift in the electorate between 2012 and 2020 was that Hispanic vote-share increased from 10% in 2012 to 13% in 2020: an increase of 30% in 8 years.
According to Wikipedia’s article, Hispanic women accounted for 8% of 2020 voters while Hispanic men accounted for 5%.
Looking at the numbers for the 1976 election between Carter and Ford: back then Hispanic voters accounted for only 2% of the electorate.

I saw my first anti-KH ad last night. It was — how many ways can we say “Liberal” and “San Francisco” in 30 seconds. They even threw in a bonus pic of KH and Nancy Smash together. I am loving that Harris & Dems are running as the party of freedom.
When you see that people under 30 have to show ID to enter a public library in Idaho, one begins to realize just how terribly pinched, controlled and pushed around everyone would be under Republican rule.
Of course on the huge issues, like abortion, birth control, gender care, and the right to vote, the GOP is anti-freedom. But they reach down into such minute levels of intrusion. I don’t have a strong feel one way or the other on Walz as Veep, but he’s damn right when he says “Mind your own business.” Get outta mine, thank you!

@RaflW: I’ve heard FL and TX might be in play. Or maybe just the Senate seats.
I have no idea, but I’m on board with making MAGA think about redirecting some money from Trump’s pocket to either of those states.
MattF
Whatever Marc Thiessen is claiming (no link) is usually a big clue about the line R party operatives are pushing. Latest is, at first, all over the place, but then goes straight for ‘Harris is a dangerous left-wing radical’.
JML
It’s going to be interesting over the next few weeks to get a good look at what the electoral math looks like post the DNC. Be very exciting if Harris can expand the map, and I’m hopeful that she can. Previously, the GOP was looking at scenarios of winning either PA, 2 of MI, WI, or AZ, or MI & NV…which is a little nervous for Dems.
But that’s reliant on GA and NC being in the bag for the GOP. Are they?
FL & TX seem like moonshots still (though if TX flips it could be like CA and be gone for generations and FL is risky to make assumptions about) and sadly SC is still fairly far away.
But if GA goes for Harris, things get a lot easier for freedom.
Belafon
I think we all have to watch the “I don’t remember X being like this.” There was a lot of excitement with Hillary. Biden was attacking Trump before the debate. In both cases, though, the media found their story to turn things against the candidates. I think people are conflating their feelings of when they had to get defensive with that time.
SFAW

@dmsilev:
Most especially trying to deflect and dilute Trump’s “after 2024 you won’t have to vote again” as having been taken unfairly out of some originally innocent context than the sinister interpretion being given the literal words. Trump could have easily and simply expressed himself clearly if he had only meant that he’d deliver everything evangelicals wanted in lastingly durable fashion by 2028. Given his prior speeches and behavior, it’s far more credible that he instead said exactly what he was intending, nothing less, nothing more.
SFAW
@SatanicPanic:
Apparently, Idaho passed a law mandating there be an “adults only” section in libraries, where books (etc.) containing “sexual content which might be harmful to children” must be located. One library was so small that creating a separate “safe space” was impossible, so they chose to make it “adults only” for the entire library.
Pretty fucked up, all in all.

This thread is really making me relive the visceral anger at the success of the 24/7/365/20 campaign against Hillary Clinton, made even more intense by the recency of similar 24/7/365/4 attacks on Joe Biden* and his family.
Hoping that feeling is so widely shared that it provides an almost unbreakable imperviousness to the coming attacks on Kamala Harris. Surely living through the Clinton and Biden experiences has made the public less credulous about Harris horrors suddenly discovered by the diligent and good faith actors the public knows Trumpers to be. Well, at least slightly less credulous. Well, at least no more credulous.
*Absolutely not attempting to relitigate the Democrats’ actions at the end of that campaign, when its success seemed to have been assured per bad polling numbers. Merely lamenting the fact that he has been slimed nonstop since the Afghan withdrawal and his remaining son’s gun violation and drug addiction turned from the plead-out anyone else would have experienced into The Crimes of the Century within the nation’s most notorious Crime Family.

The most charitable interpretation of his comments is that he left out a few word, meaning that he intended to saying “if you vote for me this year, you won’t have to worry about voting for ME in four years, because I’ll be termed out.”
But that’s a big leap, especially considering how often he’s talked about being a dictator, putting his enemies in prison (or killing them), etc.

As a Democrat, a female and a boomer, I think we have often been misunderstood. Or maybe it’s just the Democratic women in my own sphere. We don’t resent young women rising up and gaining personal and political power that we never had, we actually love it and support it fully. We paved the way in our careers and in working most of our lives to improve the rights of women and to fight back against misogyny and discrimination.
We do joyfully support Kamala Harris. Because for many of us, we did that. We helped paved the way.

@Kay: ITA. He said what he said, and I think he’s said things like that before. Make him explain it. It’s gross how the press lets him lie constantly and doesn’t call him out on the grossest ones, like the “they want to execute babies” lie. Not to mention, he’s insisted since about 2017 that he was owed a third term because the Dems have been so mean to him during his first one, or something to that effect.
If he wins in November, he will still be President come February 2029, one way or another, unless he’s dead by then.

Im not cleaning it up for him. Again, that is the job of the NYTimes and they’re well compensated with both salary and book deals.
Normal people don’t have to volunteer to drag their piece of shit candidate over the finish line. It’s not my fault he can’t impart a simple idea coherently. It sounds like he’s saying elections are over – I listened to the extended blather – it never becomes clearer. Let him explain it – I’m not.

@Anyway: wanted to reply to your advertising comment from above, because we’re in the same region, to say that I’ve seen the same ads and I just laugh. I think they started last night? We have YouTubeTv, so I don’t exactly have a way to block them, but man is that some 80s flop sweat advertising. I also saw a few more ads against Casey, and a woman rep (I can’t remember who), but basically they’re attacking them along the same lines: hordes of immigrants are just flooding the country, illegals are getting benefits that tax payers are footing, and specific to Casey, they’re attacking him on inflation.
Again, it smells of desperation and flop sweat to me.

@lowtechcyclist: I have a pretty good guess why Trump would have left out the “because I’ll be termed out” part. It’s because he’s never referenced leaving office and has never thought about leaving office voluntarily. As for what he’s actually verbalized on the topic, it has always – 100% – been about exceeding the time period the Constitution permits, on one narcissistic ground or another.
FFS. Now we’re being asked to say he actually means something he has never meant, ever.

@Scout211: Right? I mean I am Gen-x and have no children, but one of the joys of the past ten twenty years has been seeing this generation of women absolutely flourishing in the public sphere: artists, athletes, directors, politicians, activists.
The women born post Title IX and RvW passage sure, but even more so their daughters. As much as anything I think thats the heart of what the RW is terrified of: we won, we are seeing the incredible results in every facet of society and culture, and it is beautiful.
What Have The Romans Ever Done for Us?
@Kay: He didn’t misspeak and he meant what he said. He tried to overturn the last election. People committed to democracy don’t do that. Since then not accepting the results of any election he loses, and making himself a dictator, either outright saying it or hinting at it, have been constant themes in his speeches. He’s been saying this less bluntly for years. He meant every word no additional context needed.

And they wonder why religion is being rejected in such numbers.

I saw the BLM themed Harris ad they’re running in MN. It will probably be effective with white people.
But this is not our first rodeo. We went thru this with Obama when media and Republicans promoted birtherism and did that insane weeks-long blatantly racist attack on the AA minister. We just have to get around them. Not hide from it or pretend it isn’t happening – work around it.

@cmorenc: you’re so right.
Everyone thinks that the northern retirees and northern mobile workers are turning North Carolina more blue. In fact, those are the very reactionaries who moved to the south because they think it’s OK to be a racist here.
It was New Jersey and Ohio and Midwest Republicans who moved to North Carolina and tried to re-segregate the most successful, diverse school district in the nation. It was locals who turned them back. It was Northern Republican pig people who have led many of the most reactionary legislative successes in the newly republican legislature.
Also, I want to point out that native North Carolinians 30 years ago were much more decent in manner and less likely to be racist than nativeNorth Carolinians today. I am still trying to figure out the reasons why. It has partly to do with the creeping confederatization of the whole country in the last generation or so, I think.

@SFAW: Trump may have expressed several ideas in his muddled-up way. One is that a lot of his supporters were infrequent or voters or did not vote at all until he came along; people with little civic engagement outside his campaigns. He wants to string them along one last time.
This does not exclude other intentions.
Starfish
@Leto: It is more twisted than that though.
Right now, keeping people’s chronic conditions (like their diabetes, asthma, and so on) in check so they can work is beyond the concern of the medical system as it exists, so they are putting corporate profit above “Hey, these folks could engage in the Puritan work ethic if they could afford their meds.”
The pharmacy benefits managers and other entities that have no business existing in the medical sphere at all have been allowed to thrive. Lina Khan is coming for all sorts of anti-consumer stuff, and companies are trying to get her fired.

This is why I am highly skeptical of polls, How can a man who went in one week from just some senator from Ohio to one of the biggest joke’s in American political history not show a significant shift in their numbers. This really feels like the pollsters are just going through the motions and simply turning the same poll in again, and again. After all, who is going verify their numbers?

It took the MSM a LONG time to get around to calling the Felon’s lies out as actual LIES (or “untruths” or whatever). They whitewashed and tap-danced as long as they could.
And now they’re doing the same about his explicit plans and sentiments to undermine and destroy American democracy. They’re even publishing “explainers” by their own writers of what he “meant to say.”
But at least they’re reporting on it now, instead of ignoring it entirely, which is very much a step in the right direction.

Unpopular opinion: I’m really frustrated with the literal interpretation crowd re: won’t have to vote again.
It’s totally unnecessary. You don’t have to drive an anti-democracy fascism narrative that hard, because the other resulting narratives are also really, really good for us.
If someone said “it’s just trump claiming he’ll fix everything in four years,” an incredibly charitable interpretation, I think its really easy to be engaging and ask “do you believe that?”
There is easy profit there. There is easy value there. There is easy conversation there.
I would only want to shove the maximal fascism narrative towards people who already believe that, or are very close to it.
Just keeping the quote in the news without driving towards a conclusion is really good, it’ll be the gift that keeps on giving. You can engage with it from all sorts of different directions for profit.

2. What Rupar and Acyn do has value. It is important to have some idea of the endless media failures and rightwing echo chambers.

@hueyplong: Maybe I’m naive, or overly optimistic, but I want us to think about ways that we can just ignore the news industries efforts to frame things.
It’s patently obvious that, as a conglomerate of businesses, they no longer have journalistic interest in bettering our county (or even accurately reporting on both threats and improvements) in mind.
So, how do we stop echoing their framing by endlessly responding to it and trying to ‘correct’ it?
Media peeps are clearly totally disinterested in responding to reader/viewer demands that they change. Accelerating their irrelevance seems like the remaining option.
That’s why, above, I said about Rupar that maybe we not spend so much time with guys like him. Not write him off, he does good work. But where are we going, rather than what the media misrepresents about where we are headed.
