UAW endorses Harris, says rally planned with the VP in Detroit next week https://t.co/0DptjRyOUt via @michiganadvance
— Michigan Advance (@MichiganAdvance) July 31, 2024
Vice President Kamala Harris reeled in a major endorsement Wednesday as the UAW International Executive Board voted to endorse her presidential bid.
“Our job in this election is to defeat Donald Trump and elect Kamala Harris to build on her proven track record of delivering for the working class,” stated UAW President Shawn Fain. “We stand at a crossroads in this country. We can put a billionaire back in office who stands against everything our union stands for, or we can elect Kamala Harris who will stand shoulder to shoulder with us in our war on corporate greed.”
The UAW had previously given a strong endorsement to President Joe Biden, but until Wednesday had not said whether that endorsement would extend to Harris, who has already secured the pledge of enough delegates to next month’s Democratic National Convention to become the official nominee…
The union also announced that on Wednesday, Aug. 7, the day after Michigan’s primary election, Harris will campaign in Detroit to “rally with UAW members, Michigan voters, and thousands of working class people who are fighting for a better future.”…
In its release, the UAW noted Harris’ long record of supporting the labor movement including voting “against unfair trade deals that hurt the American worker like NAFTA and NAFTA 2.0, the USMCA.”
Harris had already lined up several key union endorsements prior to Wednesday’s UAW announcement, including the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the United Farm Workers (UFW).

Regardless of how accurate polling might be right now, polling does lag where the energy is by several days to a week. People need time to process their preferences, and polling takes some kind to conduct.
But the RV polls are all over the fucking map in the cross tabs. I don’t know if this will clean up as we get closer to the election, but there’s not a lot in there to be confident in.

That whole thing was a 30 minute dumpster fire and then he went on to Pennsylvania and apparently that was shit too.
Meanwhile, white right wingers are debating whether Kamala is really black. Laura Loomer found her birth certificate and clearly it said Jamaican not black – SMOKING GUN. Everyone is keying off of Trump’s messaging on that black journalist conference.

Somewhat OT. During the NABJ interview, when the reporter is looking away, Trump takes her water bottle and tightens the bottle cap. His assholery is entirely deliberate.

I swear I’m still a little mystified by this.
I’m sorta assuming that it was considered a MAGA-mitzvah — “see how noble I am, going even to talk to Those People” — and as such was kinda no-lose.
And I think he got flustered by that first question, and he fell back on victimization, which is a go-to for MAGAts, and it just kinda deteriorated from there (hello AD).
It could be I’m wrong, and they intended this kind of confrontation all along. But … to what end? Some kind of weird martyrdom schtick? “See how horrible these Black Women are to me?” But why bother? MAGA world already believes! And they were almost obsequiously polite, even calling him “Mr. President.”
Right now I’m about 3-1 on Major Fuckup…

@catclub: Hard to say without seeing the model. If it’s a simulation that would require winning a district in NE or ME, since that’s the only way to get 1 EV. So there’s 5 opportunities to get 1 EV, each of those 5 districts. And within the various polling statistical models periodically one of those pops up as a win.
The other would be a weighed simulation, where he could win an independent-friendly state like NH with 4EVs and with a 25% chance to win it the model would grant him 1EV (4 * 0.25). That seems more likely to me.
lowtechcyclist
@catclub:
I would assume either ME-2 or the district in Nebraska that includes Omaha. I can’t see him winning a single EV IRL. Perot couldn’t manage it in 1992, and he won 19% of the vote nationwide.

@Slightly_peeved: Well, LV is designed to work out how that electorate shifts by removing the likely non-voters. It’s basically a weighting of the RV model, so it can’t really correct for those things.
I’ve been a strong denier that these things are a result of non-response bias, but I’m wondering if response rates have gotten so bad that that is actually what we’re seeing. I don’t think the pollsters are so incompetent that they’re fucking up the analysis, so that kind of leaves the problem in the sampling.

@bbleh: By the way: DO NOT let anyone tell you that it’s possible for them to throw a two-way election to a contingent election in the House (which would be biased toward the Republicans because of the voting method used) by disqualifying electors so that “no one gets to 270.”
It’s not true. The Electoral Count Reform Act of 2022 made super-duper-explicit what a plain reading of the 12th Amendment should have already convinced everyone: if you disqualify electors, you’re reducing the total number of electors of which somebody has to get a majority. They could theoretically throw it to an outright majority for Trump by disqualifying enough Harris electors, but it’s not a matter of making sure “no one gets to 270.” The contingent election only happens if there’s a 3-or-more-way split.
Sister Golden Bear
Regarding the NABJ appearance, regardless or whether it was calculated and/or a tantrum, Trump is now spinning it as a dominance move: Trump: I “Crushed It” With “Rude” Black Journalists.

My greater worry is not clarity but chaos, leading to loud legal shenanigans (a la Bush v Gore), leading ultimately to either a SC decision to just hand the election to the Felon or — so judiciously, so wisely, so Constitutionally — to say “well, we don’t know, but the Constitution (PBIN) says the House should decide, so …”
They — very much including Roberts et al — are ALL IN for the Felon now. We HAVE to win in a blowout, and that means GOTV!!

American Federation of government Employees next. Federal workers swear an oath to constitution and work for you. Trump wants to fill it with flunkies. They tried the first time but met resistance. This election is a fight for our existence. Trump will destroy our unions. We are not here to surrender. We are here to rise. Secure our freedom and rebuke Donald trumps dumb vision of America!

@Matt McIrvin: But if a bunch of Repub electors refuse to certify a win by Harris…what happens then? There are at least 70 known 2020 election deniers sprinkled around the election boards in swing states that are going to refuse to certify if they don’t like the results in their areas.

No need, Vivek, we know all about Project 2025

I wonder if there’s a story for Dems and Harris to tell — a metaphor — about American music and diversity. The American music scene has been one of the most dynamic for a couple centuries is because of the diversity of the country. And she’s talking about how our differences are a source of our strength — music is a perfect example of that. The family tree of musical genres crosses every racial and cultural line — especially in 2024. It’s not like the 1980s or 1990s where there were well defined genre boundaries. Everyone remixes everyone else now. Country uses sounds from R&B and metal, punk bands do split albums with rappers, stuff is all over the place.
Avalune
Racial Justice rep in AFL. Start with your ones in the house. Tell them how you feel about some of the weird stuff coming out of peoples mouths. Check it where you live. We have bled to profusely to turn back. It’s not hard for me – I don’t need to be a rocket scientist. We gotta greese up yall. Buy those sneakers. It’s an honor to walk step by step with those of us willing to make it go. Don’t let us get a fool in the White House. (She was good – channeling some good trouble energy).

I suspect MVP Harris was in Texas to attend the funeral of Barbara Jackson Lee. Whilst she was there she did another appearance. Happens on the campaign trail at times, especially when you can write off AF2 to official duties. Just a thought. It’s alright with me! Go MVP!!!

@HumboldtBlue: Well I’m sure with all the flop sweating, Vance would be thirsty before the debate and it would be an act of brotherly love for Gritty to give him a glass of water.
sdhays
@sconosciuto: He can’t even bring himself to lie that Vance is “ready on day one”. A guy who lies like he breathes, yet he can’t even suggest the man he chose to be his Vice President is ready to be President.
You know he has asked his team about dumping Vance. I wonder if this time he didn’t have a favorite, someone like Christ Christy, so he doesn’t feel strongly about who he would swap in.
Geminid
@Dorothy A. Winsor: “Weird” is itself a weird word. It breaks the rule: “i before e except after c.” I wonder if this could be because “weird” is an Anglo-Saxon word.

Off topic: Deadpool & Wolverine may be the first MCU film with an LGBTQ+ main character. (Fox made the other two Deadpool films outside of the MCU).
I loved the film when I saw it on Sunday, but I didn’t realize this until yesterday.

@sdhays:
That’s my take as well. Vance made it clear that he would do anything TCFFG wanted – including trying to invalidate the electoral college votes. That’s why he was picked. (Scott was as much of a sycophant as Vance, but I don’t think anyone thought he would actually pick him.)
Donnie doesn’t care if Vance is unpopular. He wants him sitting in the big chair in the Senate, doing his bidding. He wants a puppet who does what he’s told. That’s what matters to him as VP.
Cheers,
Scott.

Trump is repulsive. His MAGA meatheads never call him on it. They wear diapers outside their pants to show their fealty for god’s sake. The cult won’t tell him and now he’s pissed because Kamela is telling the world.

@BR: Absolutely. And it goes well beyond our borders. If you listen to rap/hip-hop there’s lots of references to Japanese anime and obviously J-Pop/K-Pop etc., are all heavily influenced by rap/hip-hop/R&B. In jazz, artists like Kamasi Washington and Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah bring a ton of African and Caribbean influences into their music, as well as New Orleans “bounce” music and hip-hop. I have no doubt that part of why we see so much of this cross-pollination musically is due to our diversity. Living in Los Angeles and working in the predominantly Asian-American area of SGV I see White, Latinx, and Black kids with anime and K-Pop tee shirts. And Asian-American kids with rap, hip-hop and rock ones. I’m sure the diversity of the area plays a big role in that (though I think it’s also pretty widespread, even in non-diverse areas).
Here is Megan Thee Stallion’s Otaku Hot Girl BTS video from Japan. This is the kind of cross-cultural appreciation that we never had when I was a kid (1980’s). It’s a different world and it’s great.

@Jay: NICE.
I did learn a longer rhyme that covers some of those, but just a few, “except after C, or sounding like A as in ‘neighbor’ and ‘weigh'”
But yours is a masterpiece! Ever read Seuss’ “The Tough Coughs as he Ploughs Through the Dough”? It’s fun, too. Yours is even better than that title!

Really pleased to see Latter-day Saints For Harris. The Mormons have experience being “the wrong kind of Christian”. Christian nationalism should strike a very raw nerve, now that it’s out in the open.
Definitely be amusing to see Utah go blue. (Even if only, initially, at the Presidential level.)

I don’t know the origin of those words, but I see that “weird” comes from the Old English “wyrd.” This meant “fate,” but I think the old English may have had some weird ideas about fate.

@George:
This is true. SFB knows that he is unable to apologize because to him that shows weakness. He never makes mistakes, just ask him. Now just because he’s like a very large calf in a store, who wanders around looking for his herd and hitting and knocking every shelf and it’s contents on the floor, and randomly dropping piles out his exhaust port, doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be president, at least in his mind. He knows he’s not normal, but he also doesn’t know what normal is. It is a conundrum of his 65-80% non human perceptions, actions and thought. I may be low in my given range. OK I likely am.

thanks everyone for explaining the bee. I didn’t know it was a symbol for the LDS, and Utah. I don’t think I’d even caught on to K hive, either.
the word receive bothers me a lot. My brain became a sieve/ seive (well, shit) since I learned Spanish and took a year off from English. All the carefully memorized spellings went away when I forgot English.

@bbleh: Agree on it being unplanned, but I think that’s also of a piece again with how he rolls. Cornered!? Time for “All the greatest hits”!
Someone else also pointed out that running is how Trump stays out of jail. I would agree, but at this point I think there are other priorities consuming Trump’s bandwidth. Like losing an election because he can’t be arsed to pay attention to his advisors. Avoiding psychic injury is top of the list.

@Avalune: We have CWA here, and due to DeSantis’ anti-labor shenanigans, they are absolutely a mess right now and may lose their certification in Palm Beach County. No idea what happens next for our workforce. Right To Work FTW!
