Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

I really should read my own blog.

We still have time to mess this up!

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

The Debate Horseshit

Mindlessly reprinting a Trump Turd (“Truth”) as if it meant something is the latest offense against journalism from the Times.  In fairness, a bunch of other media outlets fell for it, too. Anyway, here’s the KamalaHQ response:

I Agree to Accept $100 From Every Citizen of the US

As usual, really good.  Then this:

I Agree to Accept $100 From Every Citizen of the US 1

The Harris campaign is the first one that I’ve seen that knows how to really use social media.

I know a candidate’s social media team/game is only going to account for so much of “do they earn enough votes to win”, but the KamalaHQ team’s game seems like a solid A, or even A+ with that meme, so.

To the extent our entire societal discourse has been distilled down to meme-level understandings of everything, they seem to be firing on all cylinders right now.

Makes me feel, what’s the word again?

    Hopeful?

I understand that the NYT has changed their headline after withering criticism. Not sure who does their headlines, but maybe that person needs to be replaced with someone who actually reads the story they are writing the headline for.

Dems, and Harris in particular, need to get better at hitting him on his cowardice.

After his meltdown at the NABJ session, Harris criticized him for “disrespect” and “divisiveness.”
I think that’s the wrong tack. He and his worshippers thrive on being disrespectful to their opponents. Tell them that Trump is divisive and they only love him more.

Instead, she should hit him for being a sensitive snowflake who couldn’t handle the pressure. Point out that he melted down when he was faced with direct questioning. Call him what he is: a weakling and a coward.

I guarantee his followers will be more affected by that than by calling him “disrespectful”.

The Post has a story about how the Trump campaign is outsourcing basically all of their GOTV operations to third party grifts, I mean organizations. I just want to highlight one small part:

Bowyer instructed the organizers not to come on too strong by showing up with MAGA hats and fliers. Instead, they should research their marks and start reaching out through Facebook groups, community events, or neighborly gestures such as recommending plumbers or harp teachers. They could even arrange seemingly chance encounters on coffee runs or dog walks.

“Some of these things sound like stalking,” one staffer whispered.

“Professional stalkers,” his colleague joked back.

As one slide from the training implored: “BE NORMAL. BE NORMAL. BE NORMAL.”

Yeah, I think that ship has sailed.

I heard the passage about disrespect and division that night on the radio, and I thought it was very strong. I noticed that Harris did not refer to Trump by name but rather as. “A person who would….A person who wants to….” The reporter commented on this too. Without acknowledging that they have influence over what “people are saying”.

@hrprogressive: It’s a bit cringe. The meme is pretty stale. ‘Blankie’ is really cringe. And it doesn’t hit. What does a blankie have to do with Trump? If you’re going to take the effort, hit him where it hurts.

This was sort of my concern here. You can’t force something to be viral. You can’t force memes. It needs to be authentic and spontaneous. The campaign can’t be making memes, they need to elevate ones created organically by supporters. Not only will that get better memes, but it also shows that the campaign is following the interests of the community – it shows the campaign is paying attention and listening. It’ll also require the campaign to be edgy – good memes aren’t safe.

But campaigns are too invested in control to do this. My hope was that the young people in the campaign could get this point across, but perhaps not.

@Sister Golden Bear: And it can end up being a trap for people who support trans folks, too, because the response to a wrong claim of someone being trans sometimes blends into “OMG what a horrible thing to say about someone!!!” rather than a more nuanced takedown of gender essentialism and trans panic. Like…it’s important for us cis folks to be sure we’re not coming across as though calling someone trans is itself the insult. I don’t know, I’m not explaining it well. I guess…remember when some lady at a McCain event said Obama was “an Arab” and McCain told her “No he isn’t, he’s a decent family man” as though that could not coincide with “Arab”. And I’m sure that wasn’t what McCain actually meant, but that’s how it came across.

I think I’ll stop my rambling now because I’m not making much sense, probably.

The Post did change the headline several times.  They also actually decided to fact check Trump’s claims, both of whether there was an actual agreement, and whether his reasons for abandoning the ABC debate were accurate/consistent with his prior acceptance.  They had trouble figuring out what was the most important part of the story, that Trump had lied, or that the lie was crafted to coveri up his chickening out of the ABC debate.

“Have to”, my royal Italian arse. It’s intentional.

Those papers know full well that only a minuscule fraction of their viewers read beyond the headlines. The evil brilliance of the Far Wrong is to place their tools in a position to slant the headlines however they want them, even (especially!) to the point of completely contradicting the underlying story.

I’ve been pointing this out at the top of my electronic lungs since Dubya’s first term, much good has it done me…though it sounds like light is finally starting to dawn over progressive Marble Heads…

I’m thinking I’ll agree to play first base for the A’s.  Not a lot of running involved, and I’m tall enough to stretch for a throw that’s off-line.  No way I’ll hit a major league pitch, except by accident.  But the way they keep trading away their best players, there could be an opportunity there.  And I’ll be a lock for the record books the first time I step onto the field.

As soon as I figure out my salary demands, I’ll accept.

@Sure Lurkalot: No, not even that. It’s too late for them.

The NYT already lost too many subscribers, like so many smaller newspapers before them, that they cannot continue. There is no threshold to force them to reevaluate because that threshold is long past, and that is what drove them into the arms of the Russian oligarchs that run Donald Trump.

You cannot make the NYT turn around by taking away more subscribers, you’re only driving them deeper into the arms of the Kremlin. There’s no turning back. Villago delenda est.

They work for Trump. That can’t change unless Trump’s real bosses, are also delenda. Which we can work on, too. But Trump doing badly cannot change this because it isn’t sales or clicks the NYT needs. They need victory over American democracy. Good fuckin’ luck with that.

Also, like rikyrah likes to say…

    JUDGES JUDGES JUDGES

Very likely some of the high muckity mucks at the Times have committed crimes of some sort. How do you think the Kremlin blackmails them so well? Justice can clean up some of the mess.
